A High-quality Digital Library Supporting Computing Education: The Ensemble ApproachChen, Yinlin 28 August 2017 (has links)
Educational Digital Libraries (DLs) are complex information systems which are designed to support individuals' information needs and information seeking behavior. To have a broad impact on the communities in education and to serve for a long period, DLs need to structure and organize the resources in a way that facilitates the dissemination and the reuse of resources. Such a digital library should meet defined quality dimensions in the 5S (Societies, Scenarios, Spaces, Structures, Streams) framework - including completeness, consistency, efficiency, extensibility, and reliability - to ensure that a good quality DL is built.
In this research, we addressed both external and internal quality aspects of DLs. For internal qualities, we focused on completeness and consistency of the collection, catalog, and repository. We developed an application pipeline to acquire user-generated computing-related resources from YouTube and SlideShare for an educational DL. We applied machine learning techniques to transfer what we learned from the ACM Digital Library dataset. We built classifiers to catalog resources according to the ACM Computing Classification System from the two new domains that were evaluated using Amazon Mechanical Turk. For external qualities, we focused on efficiency, scalability, and reliability in DL services. We proposed cloud-based designs and applications to ensure and improve these qualities in DL services using cloud computing. The experimental results show that our proposed methods are promising for enhancing and enriching an educational digital library.

[pt] ESTUDO DA FLAMBAGEM LATERAL ESTÁTICA E DINÂMICA DE VIGAS ALTAS COM USO DE ELEMENTOS FINITOS DE PLACAS / [en] STATIC AND DYNAMIC BUCKLING OF DEEP BEAMS WITH PLATE FINITE ELEMENTSFELIPE DA SILVA BRANDAO 14 December 2020 (has links)
[en] The main objective of this paper is to present results on the lateral buckling of beams using finite elements based on Kirchhoff and Mindlin-Reissner Plate theories, merged with membrane elements in order to include the analysis of shells. A MATLAB code was developed to calculate static and dynamic critical loads, buckling modes, frequencies, and vibration modes of thin and thick plates subjected to conservative and non-conservative (also called follower or circulatory) loads. Mass and stiffness matrices are employed to determine natural frequencies. In the case of conservative loads, static critical loads are calculated by adding a so-called geometric matrix. However, in case of displacement-dependent applied forces, it is necessary to implement a matrix that will correct the loads, designated as load matrix. In the case of conservative forces, the load matrix is symmetric, and in the case of non-conservative forces, it is non-symmetric. In the latter case, the critical load usually will correspond to dynamic behavior designated as flutter. Different boundary conditions and loads are considered and several cases of lateral buckling are investigated. Theoretical values when found in the literature are compared with values determined by Finite Element Method (FEM). The lateral instability of slender beams is very important in practice, because in some situations it may occur prior to ultimate plastic limit state in bending. Therefore, lateral buckling is mentioned in a wide variety of national and international rules, and some comparisons with the results of the computer code developed herein are presented.

Bernard, Anne 20 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)

These databases are often characterized by a number of variables much larger than the number of individuals. The goal of this dissertation was to develop appropriate statistical methods to analyse high-dimensional data, and to select the most biologically relevant variables. In the first part, I present the state of the art that describes unsupervised and supervised variables selection methods for two or more blocks of variables. In the second part, I present two new unsupervised "sparse" methods: Group Sparse Principal Component Analysis (GSPCA) and Sparse Multiple Correspondence Analysis (Sparse MCA). Considered as regression problems with a group LASSO penalization, these methods lead to select blocks of quantitative and qualitative variables, respectively. The third part is devoted to interactions between SNPs. A method employed to identify these interactions is presented: the logic regression. Finally, the last part presents an application of these methods on a real SNPs dataset to study the possible influence of genetic polymorphism on facial skin aging in adult women. The methods developed gave relevant results that confirmed the biologist's expectations and that offered new research perspectives.
