Training the student actor in the production process : a look at areas in which a director within a training institution can facilitate the learning process in a student actor

Thesis (MDram)--Stellenbosch University, 1997. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A thesis in which the author examines ways in which the director within an acting training institution may use the full-scale theatre production as a means of intense training for the students involved. The author contends that much of the theory and practical work taught within a classroom situation cannot be fully comprehended and/or brought to fruition if it is not tested and experienced within as realistic (pertaining to professional theatre) as possible a scenario, in the form of the student production. For the purposes of this thesis, the typical practical production process is used as a model and different areas in which the director may act as a teacher or catalyst to self-discovery are discussed largely in the order in which they might occur in practice. The author concludes that to provide intensive training through the production process would be a very time-consuming and costly endeavour, although very rewarding if it were at all possible. In addition to this, it would require a highly qualified director-trainer, with an holistic understanding of the 'theatrical art, who is prepared to invest a great amount of time and effort in such a production. Research for this thesis included reading material, practical directing and acting projects, and teaching practical acting in the capacity of a part-time lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch Drama Department. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Tesis waarin die outeur maniere ondersoek waardeur 'n regisseur binne 'n akteurs-opleidingsinstansie die volskaalse teaterproduksie kan gebruik as 'n metode vir intense opleiding vir die betrokke studente. Die outeur meen dat 'n groot gedeelte van die teorie en praktiese opleiding wat in die klaskamer weergegee word, nie ten voile verstaan of benut word, tensy die student dit beproef en beleef in so 'n realisties (wat professionele teater betref) moontlike scenario, in die vorm van 'n studenteproduksie. Vir die doeleindes van hierdie tesis word 'n tipiese produksieproses as model gebruik, en verskeie areas waarin die regisseur as onderwyser of katalisator tot selfontdekking kan optree, word grotendeels bespreek in die volgorde waarin dit in die praktyk mag voorkom. Die gevolgtrekking is dat intensiewe opleiding in die produksieproses 'n uiters tydsame en duur oefening sou wees, dog baie lonend indien prakties uitvoerbaar. Daarby sou dit 'n hoogs gekwalifiseerde regisseur-opleier verg, met 'n holistiese kennis van die teaterkuns, wat bereid is om baie tyd en moeite op s6 'n produksie te bestee. Entende-se \"o ator\" como um \"corpo que age em cena\". Por meio da elaboração da noção de \"corpo\" e \"voz\", em relação com o ambiente sociocultural, a técnica do ator é concebida como uma \"técnica corporal de transmissão\". Essa concepção ilumina a investigação e a comparação entre o pensamento de Linklater e Grotowski, inclusive as ideias-chave como a \"voz natural\", a \"organicidade\" e a \"via negativa\". The Resurrection Of Everyman

In March of 2005 I was a cast member in Mad Cow Theatre's production of the Morality drama Everyman. This classic tale on the condition of human dying is regarding as one of the greatest dramas of the Medieval period and is one of the first plays in the English language to be put into print. This thesis is an actor's journey into the history of Medieval theatre, the challenges of producing Everyman for a contemporary audience, and the techniques of acting implemented in the creation of allegorical characters. Medieval drama, like Everyman, is still relevant in today's world because it addresses universal themes of friendship, material wealth, and reverence towards death. It is the story of the human being, the power of beliefs, and the fear of death. This thesis reflects a group of artists' desire to give an audience the gift of insight into their common selves.

Developing New Works For The Stage: An Actor's Perspective

U.S. Theatre is often noted for its commitment to new play development. Since Eugene O’Neill, America has fostered a tradition of celebrating emerging playwrights and their bold, edgy new works through countless development programs such as festivals, new play readings, grant programs, workshops, and world premieres. Although in recent years new-play development has seen a steady decline in funding (Levitow 2), it remains a cornerstone of American identity and an essential medium for pushing boundaries in theatre, both culturally and artistically. New-play development is indispensable for keeping theatre relevant in our everchanging culture. For my thesis, I explore the process of developing a new play from an actor’s perspective. The role of the director, dramaturg and producer of a new play is often discussed; however the importance of the actor throughout the development process is sometimes overlooked. There are many configurations of artistic teams assembled to develop a new play; therefore, I do not suggest there is one type of team that is best or one type of role for the actor to play within the team. My aim was to collaborate with the playwright, director and fellow actors to discover what is required of an actor in all phases of new play development. I applied the principles learned to my own work in the World Premiere of The Exit Interview by William Missouri Downs at the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre in Partnership with The University of Central Florida. As I navigated my way through the artistic process of developing a new work, I discovered some ‘best practices’, which I employed throughout the rehearsal and performance iii process to further my own skills. I will discuss the development process I experienced, as objectively as possible, outlining the key best practices for an actor working in a collaborative team to develop a new play.

What is the ART of ADHD SoMe Acting : and how is it artistically relevant for everyone to know?

During my master program in acting 2021-23 at Stockholm University of the Arts I coined the term deneurotypicalize and a definition of art as ART to guide my now and future work of trying to deneurotypicalize acting technique and understand what the ART of the SoMe Actor might be and do and and if there is or should be a difference between a neurotypical and neurodiverse way of applying oneself and communicate with said audience on said platform(s)? This all resulted in over 150 pages of written words, and a great deal more written documentation; a performance lecture on the 2nd of May 2023 with a Q&amp;A, several short films and Social Media interactions, 3 Surveys about ADHD-acting and art, 3 events on Scenkonstbiennalen (2022); and this master thesis and a research catalogue page with a more general documentation, too. ADHD, ART, Social Media and acting is more connected than I first realised, maybe because ADHD-actors have an affinity for ARTing which can be, and not be, an asset during ARTistic-processes. Lots of further research is needed, and in larger quantities. The ADHD relation to the arts might seem obvious because the out of the box thinking, hyperfocus, hyperfixation and only being able to follow your strongest passions and interests but it can also be because the rest of the society isn’t built for ARTing or ADHD-people which makes the field of arts so alluring. And maybe more often than we’d like to admit: also a very all consuming — especially if all the ARTistic-processes are based upon neurotypical standards — energy draining (and worst case scenario a death) trap. / Under mitt masterprogram i skådespeleri 2021-23 vid Stockholms konsthögskola myntade jag termen deneurotypicalize (avneurotypikalisera) och en definition av konst som ART för att vägleda mitt nu- och framtida arbete med att försöka avneurotypikalisera skådespeleritekniken och förstå vad the ART of/ADHD Socialamedie-skådespelarkonsten är och kan vara och göra och och om det finns någon skillnad eller borde vara skillnad mellan ett neurotypiskt och neurodiverst sätt att applicera sig och kommunicera med nämnda publik på nämnda plattform(ar)? Allt detta resulterade i över 150 sidor med skrivna ord och mycket mer skriftlig dokumentation; en performanceföreläsning den 2 maj 2023 med en Q&amp;A, flera kortfilmer och sociala medier interaktioner, 3 undersökningar om ADHD-skådespeleri och konst, 3 evenemang på Scenkonstbiennalen (2022); och denna masteruppsats och en forskningskatalogsida med mer allmän dokumentation. ADHD, ART, sociala medier och skådespeleri hänger mer ihop än jag först insåg, kanske för att ADHD-skådespelare har en fördel när det kommer till att kontsta (ARTing) som kan vara, och inte vara, en tillgång under KONSTnärliga processer (ARTistic-processes). Det behövs mycket mer forskning, och i större mängder. ADHD-relationen till konsten kan tyckas uppenbar på grund av out of the box-tänkande, hyperfokus, hyperfixering och bara kunna följa dina starkaste passioner och intressen, men det kan också bero på att resten av samhället inte är byggt för att konsta (ARTing) eller ADHD-människor som gör konstområdet så lockande. Och kanske oftare än vi skulle vilja erkänna också: en väldigt allförbrukande - speciellt om alla konstnärliga processer är baserade på neurotypiska standarder - energitömmande (och värsta scenariot en dödsfalls-) fälla. / <p>Since this is an artistic work there was an IRL examination of my performance lecture on the second of May 2023 and also an examination of this master thesis of 127 pages on the 26th of May 2023 that both were passed by Ulrika Malmgren.
