Acquisition of Italian as a second language: the situation of adoption from Lithuania / Italų kaip antrosios kalbos įsisavinimas: įvaikinimo iš Lietuvos situacijaRamonaitė, Jogilė Teresa 25 June 2013 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the linguistic development of Lithuanian children adopted to Italy focusing on the expression of action (and state) as one of the most important communicative tasks; to define the stages of acquisition of Italian as a second language, the speed with which the stages occur and the factors that influence it; to investigate the position of Lithuanian in the linguistic repertoire of the adopted children. In order to achieve these goals a sociolinguistic survey of adoptive parents has been conducted, adopted children have been observed for a year after the adoption, spontaneous speech data were collected of one selected child, the data then has been transcribed and annotated for analysis with the program CHILDES, a detailed analysis of the expression of action / state has been conducted.
Summarizing the results of the research, the dissertation confirms that the adopted children rapidly acquire the new language (L2), they reach a very high level of linguistic quality, comparable to that of the native speakers, even though their acquisition is completely (or mostly) natural and not formal. The expression of action / state starts by using pragmatic principles and gradually passing to the grammatical ones whereas the grammar is acquired in a typical evolving sequence. Even the second language acquisition of the older adopted children has some similarities with the children’s mother tongue acquisition (L1). Age is not the major factor that...

LA "NASCITA" DELLA FAMIGLIA ADOTTIVA: SVILUPPO PSICOSOCIALE DEI BAMBINI E BENESSERE GENITORIALE. UNO STUDIO LONGITUDINALECANZI, ELENA CAMILLA ROSA 12 March 2015 (has links)
The research project was promoted by the Athenaeum Center for Family Studies and Research with the cooperation of the public adoption agency “Il Cerchio” Centro Adozioni ASL Milano 1, and it was aimed at developing and applying a research protocol for the agency’s first year post-adoption practice. In the first study of the thesis the research protocol was presented, in terms of finalities, aims, method, and practical implications for the intervention with adoptive families through a single-case study. The second study documented the situation at children’s arrival into the new family and it was aimed at investigating children’s wellbeing, taking into account their pre-adoptive experiences, and parents’ wellbeing, especially focusing the attention on parental stress. The next two studies presented the longitudinal data about families’ changes during the first year post-adoption. Children’s recovery in the area of social, emotional, and cognitive development, and parents’ wellbeing were evaluated. In particular the last study discussed the specific way adoptive mothers and fathers cope with the transition to parenthood, comparing with biological families’ experiences, especially on marital relationship and social support, two dimensions still not largely explored in the field of national and international research.

The adoption context of older children faces confrontation between past and present. It is made of stories that intersect and merge into the new gathering. Thereby, we highlight the
importance of considering such dynamics and the resulting effects from old bonds on the new adoptive filiation construction. From this perspective, we have done a meta-analysis study of the dissertation The Process of Becoming a Father, a Mother, and Children in the Adoption of Older Children. Based on accounts collected along the judicial dismissal period and in the adjustment period follow up, we were able to reconstruct part of the childrens and the
adoptive families stories and, then, conduct a clinical analysis from a psychoanalytical bias. The present study has demonstrated that the old parental imagos and the marks from the previous story never cease to re-inscribe themselves. It has also been shown that distressing situations from the prospective adopted childrens past trigger defenses and interfere in the new affective bonds. This study has pointed out the need to consider the prospective adopted childs previous life and also the importance of the adjustment period, since the new filiation construction has its start during this time.

This study was based on the attendance, by this reasearcher as a judiciary analist, in four adoptions cases of children between four and ten years old, prosecuted at the Recifes Secound Childhood and Adolescece Court, along the year of 2013. On these cases, we
verified the adoptees difficulty to filiate with the adoptive mothers, wich caused great suffering, while they affectively approached the adoptive fatherss without any apparent setbacks. For that reason, to contribute to the development of the work whith older than four
year old childrens adoption (here refered as older child adoption), preparing the adoptees and assisting the adoptive parents on the filiation process, we sought to identify these filiations particularities. Furthermore, we analyzed how the maternity and paternity was
experienced on the adaptation period and, more, and the relation of the couple regarding the will to adopt related to the childs interaction with the adoptive figures. Thereunto, we conducted a psychoanalytic approachs reaseach, analysing adaptation periods attendance
reports. As results, regarding the adoptive children, we verified that the precariousness on experiencing the parental imagos mourning affects the emotional reinvestment upon the new maternal figures. As for the adoptive families, we noticed that the difficulties experiencing
the biological childs mourning interferes on the adoptive filiation. Especially, for the adoptive mothers, it required mourn being a mother as being the sons primary love object, since, because of the childs development, he will demand a different relationship pattern
than the one experienced with a baby. Upon the findings, we hope to contribute to the development of new knowledge to base te adoptive families preparation, essential to the adoptions success.

This study proposes an attempt to a psychoanalytical reading of some parts of the two novels L’Oiseau des origines (Gallo, 1974) and Le Testament français (Makine, 1995), hoping to unveil some hidden issues. The novels recount the lives of two young men, Thomas and Aliocha, and their respective search for identity. The framework of family secrets offers an appreciation of the role played by the family background on the formation of their charactersThe first hypothesis is that the two young men’s identity search is marked by exaggeration or even fabrication since they grew up in family environments where others hid their true origins from them. That hypothesis was not confirmed. The second hypothesis is that they, influenced by the existence of family secrets, have developed a secretive and concealed character with problems to distinguish real life from dreams. That hypothesis was partly confirmed. The study proved that they have developed a secretive character with a predilection to create further secrets. However, only Thomas was found to have problems to distinguish real life from dreams.

New heroines of the diaspora : reading gender identity in South Asian diasporic fictionBanerjee, Lopa 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis looks at literature
by two South Asian, diasporic writers, Jhumpa Lahiri and Monica
Ali, as a space where creative,
cross-cultural and independent
identities for diasporic women might be created.
The central claim of the thesis
is that diasporic migration
affects South Asian women in
particular ways.
The most positive outcome is that
these women adopt new trans-border
identities but that these remain
shaped by class, culture and
gender. Hence a working class
milieu such as the one depicted
by Monica Ali, leads to an
immigrant, ghetto-ised,
community-based identity,
located solely in the land of
adoption, with return or travel to
the homeland no longer possible.
However, the milieu imagined in
Jhumpa Lahiri’s text, a middle-class, suburban environment, creates a solitary, transnational
identity, lived between countries,
where travel between the land of
birth and the land of adoption
remains accessible. / English / M.A. (English)
