What is the professional identity of careers advisers in higher education? : challenges and opportunities for careers service leaders and managers

Thambar, Nalayini Pushpam January 2016 (has links)
This aim of this study is to understand the professional identity of careers advisers in UK universities, at a time of unprecedented interest in employability across the sector following an increase in undergraduate tuition fees in England. The research question is “What is the professional identity of careers advisers in higher education in the ‘new’ employability climate? Opportunities and challenges for careers service leaders and managers.” Here, professional identity is defined as ‘the experience and self-understanding of those fulfilling a particular occupational role’. The study is qualitative, using the methodological approach of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The areas of literature that have been reviewed relate to the nature and development of the professions and the development of individual and collective professional identity. The history of the careers adviser role within the UK education system also provides context. Data was collected in summer 2012 through interviews with 21 careers advisers from 14 universities across England, Wales and Scotland using a stratified sample based on league table data. This study makes a contribution to knowledge by suggesting a professional identity for careers advisers which is Undefined, Parochial, Unrecognised and Unconfident yet Dedicated, and by making recommendations for leaders and managers, and careers advisers themselves, to consider in their approaches to staff development, (self-) advocacy and connection with broader institutional priorities. Such approaches do not conflict with a primary purpose of ‘helping students’ and can serve to strengthen the impact and influence of careers advisers as experts who address the increasingly critical employability agenda.

University Club Advising: Learning and Connecting Through Formal Practices

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: This mixed methods action research study closely examines what Club Advisors need in order to be successful in their role, develops an intervention that supports Club Advisors in skill-building along with Club Advisor’s self-motivation and the development of self-efficacy in their role. The purpose of this study was to understand what skills and motivations Club Advisors had and after an intervention occurred, observing whether their self-efficacy around club advising increased. While there has been growth in the area of student affairs and focus on student involvement outside of the classroom, there is currently limited research in the field of university Club Advising as the resources exist informally. The formal literature which does exist does not agree on what skills are needed to be a Club Advisor and does not bridge the gap between theory and practice. The lack of formal research on Club Advising impacts the student experience through Club Advisors not receiving the resources they need. Ensuring the Club Advisors who do volunteer their time are set-up to develop their students successfully requires additional research. This research study used surveys, interviews, memos, and workshop interventions to understand where Club Advisors were developmentally and how to develop them further. Club Advisors in the study wanted to use the resources and connect with others, but before this study did not know how or where to connect. Future cycles of research beyond this study would expand upon the findings and create a foundation for Club Advisor development. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 2020

Essays On Mutual Fund Governance And The Advisory Fee Contracts

Erzurum, Yaman 01 January 2006 (has links)
This dissertation consists of three studies related to corporate governance of equity mutual funds in a framework of relations between the three closely interrelated actors of mutual fund industry. The mutual fund advisers, the shareholders and the mutual fund board being the advocate of shareholders rights. The first study analyzes the advisory fee, using a survivorship bias free data set of 176 equity funds managed by 125 different advisers. The price of professional portfolio management provided by the mutual fund adviser depends not only on the fund characteristics but also on the fund objective, the adviser's portfolio related and management based decisions, and the portfolio performance. I find that the advisers may reduce their own costs through the use of derivatives or manipulate the actual fee contract by engaging in soft dollar agreements. Advisers actively manage the advisory fee contracts responding to the outcome of their management decisions. The advisory fee increases after voluntary fee reimbursement or if the adviser is not fully reimbursed for certain services. Risk taking behavior is the main motivation behind the structure of advisory contracts. Also, I show that non-surviving funds have higher advisory fees, suggesting competitive fee pricing may be necessary for survival. The second study focuses on the relation between general board characteristics, independent director characteristics and the advisory fee which is solely an outcome of the negotiations between the fund board and the adviser, thus a good proxy for the governance skills of the board. I also examine the impact of SEC's regulation change of 2000. Mutual fund scandals that took place after the regulation change of 2000 suggested that besides the fraction of independent seats, the individual characteristics of the members that occupy board seats are crucial for mutual fund board governance. I find that boards benchmark objective average fee but not necessarily for the best interest of shareholders. Shareholders are likely to benefit from the expertise of members with higher tenure and finance backgrounds. Although increase in board independence is likely to contribute to board governance, the effect of 2000 regulation change of board independence on its arguably target group is limited. Nominating committee improves the board governance. Although the results do not suggest that an independent chairman directly improves board governance, I find modest evidence that the impact of an independent chairman is likely to depend on the expertise of the member that would occupy the chairman seat. Third study analyzes a specific tool, soft dollar arrangements using a survivorship bias free data set of 432 equity funds managed by 129 different advisers. Soft dollar arrangements affect all three actors of mutual fund industry. They are widely used by the advisers, have to be monitored closely by the fund board and eventually affect the overall wealth of shareholders. Fund advisers determine the broker base, scope of brokerage services and whether to self produce or outsource brokerage services through soft dollar arrangements. In return, shareholders expect to benefit from better fund performance and reduction in advisory fee. I find that transaction execution not necessarily motivated by additional brokerage services is likely to be responsible for high turnover. Construction of brokerage base by the adviser is not arbitrary. Advisers ex ante construct the broker base in order to minimize the brokerage commissions and considering ex post soft dollar arrangements. Transaction execution related services lead to less brokerage commissions and soft dollar use while both increase if research is a consideration for broker participation. More concentrated broker base leads to lower brokerage fee and higher soft dollar use. Results indicate that advisers enforce competition within brokerage industry for lower cost of transaction execution. Shareholders benefit from increasing soft dollar use through performance improvement and reduction in advisory fee. Yet, the cost of soft dollar arrangements seems to exceed their benefit to shareholders. If the results indicate competition within brokerage industry for lower cost of transaction execution, the undisclosed premium paid for the additional services are likely to be responsible for this adverse effect.

Specialpedagogen som kvalificerad samtalspartner och rådgivare : En intervjustudie om hur specialpedagoger tolkar och beskriver sitt uppdrag och sin roll / Specialist educator as a qualified dialogue partner and adviser : An interview study on how special educators interpret and describe their assignment and role

Gustafsson, Johanna, Kjellvåg, AnnCharlotte January 2020 (has links)
The background to the study is based on the meaning of the special educator's assignment and role as a qualified dialogue partner and adviser. Since its meaning is not specified in any policy document, it can lead to different expectations and perceptions. The aim of the study is to find out how special educators interpret and describe qualified dialogue partners and advisers in practice as well as what conditions to be qualified dialogue partners and advisers are needed. The method qualitative interviews with question guides based on open questions for special educators active in preschool and elementary school F-6 were used to find out how the special educators define and perceive their assignment and their role as a qualified dialogue partner and adviser. The result shows that special educators distinguish specific features of being a qualified dialogue partner, which means quality and competence, while advisers mean quick solutions and quick fix. The result further shows that special educators see all conversations as positive as a counsel can be developed into a qualified conversation. They believe that attitudes, approach, trust and relationship-building are the basis for change work where special educators' communication skills are a tool in conversation. The result also shows that if special educators' assignments and roles are to be established in practice as a qualified dialogue partner and adviser, mandate, trust, time and organization are needed.

Can professional advisers stay professional?

Dicksson, Nellie, Lennman, Anna January 2023 (has links)
Background: The year 2022 was eventful and marked by a significant stock market decline. Private investors faced increased pressure to remain calm and not fall into the trap of psychological biases that are particularly destructive during periods like this one. This has contributed to why individuals choose to seek guidance from professional advisers. But the question is whether professional advisers could avoid these psychological biases during this period? A professional adviser should, based on their education, have the ability to minimize the risk of psychological biases that investments can lead to. Their work includes mandatory knowledge updates from the license issuer, Swedsec. The knowledge update 2021 included knowledge of behavioral finance, but the question is whether this knowledge has changed the work of a professional adviser? Because if even professional advisers cannot avoid psychological pitfalls, what is the point of taking guidance? Purpose: The purpose of the study is to map professional advisers' knowledge of behavioral finance and how overconfidence, herd behavior and the disposition effect can be observed in their advisory process during the 2022 stock market decline. Furthermore, the study aims to analyze and create an understanding of how the work of professional advisers has changed since the knowledge update 2021. Method: To fulfill the purpose of the study, a qualitative method has been used and nine semi-structured interviews with Swedsec-licensed professional advisers have been held. Furthermore, an abductive approach has been adopted to have the opportunity to test the interaction between previous theories and the reality but also to be able to find new theories and patterns based on real observations. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that the knowledge of behavioral finance among professional advisers is inadequate but not necessarily wrong. The psychological biases have, more or less, been observed in the advisory process during 2022 where the most prominent bias was the disposition effect. Despite the lack of knowledge, professional advisers have developed unconscious strategies that can mitigate, but not eliminate, the risk of falling into the trap of psychological biases. Finally, none of the advisers have changed their work after Swedsec's 2021 knowledge update to prevent irrational behavior.
