Alcohol and youth workWright, Linda January 1998 (has links)
This thesis is an analysis of a curriculum development process used to train youth workers to raise and respond to alcohol issues. Within an interpretivist framework, a seven-stage model of curriculum planning was developed. Stage 1 involved examination of the literature on youth work and alcohol and youth work training, an empirical needs assessment study (via a national survey and in-depth consultation in one youth service) and examination of the results in relation to the literature on young people and alcohol. Stage 2 used the stage 1 data to define the rationale, which in turn informed stages 3-5, formulation of aims and learning outcomes, learning activities and teaching resources. Stage 6, delivery, involved pilot courses in in- service and initial-training contexts. Illuminative evaluation was used to assess the training process (Stage 7) and its impact on youth worker practice. The staged model was found to be a practical curriculum development framework, particularly combined with an action-research approach. The study confirmed the importance of thorough training needs assessment, including the needs of service users. Youth workers were found to typically adopt a reactive approach to alcohol issues, which focused on individual young drinkers rather than structural determinants of alcohol-related harm. The pilot courses were successful in stimulating planned alcohol education initiatives. Features of training that enabled youth workers to tackle alcohol issues included: a clear rationale based on youth work principles, harm-reduction goals, understanding the place and meaning of alcohol in young people's lives, a practice focus and managerial support. The study discusses the implications of the findings for youth work training and informal education practice and suggests a strategy for fixture development of the alcohol training materials.

Ungdomsinriktad alkohol- och drogprevention : förutsättningar, evidens och legitimitetvon Greiff, Ninive January 2008 (has links)

The aim of this thesis is to elucidate different aspects of Swedish adolescents’ use of alcohol and drugs and how society deals with problems related to their use. The subject has been analyzed in four studies. The first study was based on focus-group interviews with adolescents and aimed at elucidating the meaning of alcohol and intoxication for adolescents. The participants’ discussions contained two levels - one superficial (an ideal presentation of themselves) and one deep (which mediated cultural ideas of how to think and act). This is interpreted as a way to express the maturity process they are going through, at the same time as it symbolizes difficulties to unite external norms and values with their own need for devotion. The second study was based on project applications, evaluations and economy accounts for preventive work from 150 projects conducted by non-profit organizations. The results show that type of organizations and the methods used were based on tradition rather than on efficiency. These results are discussed in relation to growing demands for evidence based practice in the field of prevention. The third and the fourth study are based on the ADAD-interview (Adolescent Drug Abuse Diagnosis). In the third study, comparisons of different judgements concerning the extent of drug abuse among adolescents in institutional care, were made and results show large differences between the different judgements, concerning both occurrence and extent of abuse. In the fourth study, the significance of ADAD was discussed in relation to matching drug abusing adolescents to treatment institutions. The results show that only a limited number of institutions specializes on drug abusing adolescents and that a majority of the adolescents institutionalized for drug problems never visit an institution specialized on drug abuse treatment.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Professionals' Attitudes Toward Dually Diagnosed Clients in a Community-Based Treatment CenterBullock, Joseph Edward 22 April 2002 (has links)
Mental health and substance abuse treatment systems have a history of incompatible philosophies and conflicts that have been associated with poor treatment outcomes for persons dually diagnosed. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there are differences in attitudes between mental health and substance abuse professionals toward the dually diagnosed client and whether or not academic discipline, levels of training and experience, occupation, and amount of contact affect the attitudes of these professional groups. A non-experimental survey research design was used for this study, and data were collected by means of a revised Opinions About Mental Illness (OMI) survey instrument and supplemental demographic questionnaire.
The modified OMI instrument was piloted by a panel of subject matter experts experienced in the treatment of persons who are dually diagnosed in which they rated each item for favorableness to concepts of dual diagnosis. The modified OMI survey and a demographic questionnaire were administered to a sample consisting of mental health and substance abuse professionals employed at a local community mental health center. A total of 86 respondents representing 95% of the sample population completed the modified OMI survey and demographic questionnaire.
Data were analyzed using descriptive, independent sample t-test, and multiple analysis of variance (MANOVA) statistics. Results revealed no statistically significant differences in attitude between mental health and substance abuse professionals toward dually diagnosed clients. Analysis of the independent variables academic discipline, level of training and experience, occupation, and amount of contact demonstrated no significant interaction effects between mental health and substance abuse professionals. Despite the absence of statistically significant differences in attitude between the mental health and substance abuse professionals, the similarities may be significant in terms of the psychological value for building positive relationships. The atmosphere of agency culture and the significance of co-location of mental health and substance abuse professionals were also potentially important factors in the outcome of the present study. / Ed. A inclusão social de usuários dos CAPS AD de um município paulista / Social inclusion of drug users at a Service of Psychosocial Attention and Care to alcohol and drug addiction (CAPS AD) in a city in the State of São Paulo - BrazilMarchetti, Silvana Proença 22 January 2016 (has links)
A pesquisa revelou ainda a influência dos modelos de assistência para usuário de álcool e drogas no posicionamento político-ideológico dos profissionais e, consequentemente, em suas perspectivas e ações para inclusão social, sendo ainda uma tema que deve ser mais amplamente discutido nas equipes, para que o cuidado em saúde mental para estes usuários seja mais qualificado / This is a descriptive, exploratory work aiming at investigating the social inclusion of drug users undergoing treatment, from the perspective of the professional sat the Independence and Revival Service of Psychosocial Attention and Care to alcohol and drug users (CAPS AD) in the city of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. This work is based on the assumption that professionals\' view about the models of \"Attention and Care to alcohol and drugs\" influence their actions towards social inclusion of users. Seventeen professionals, who work at CAPS AD for at least three months, participated voluntarily in this study. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and participative observation, recorded on field diaries. The analysis was carried out with Thematic Analysis, within the theory and methodology of content analysis. We based our discussion on the concepts of Social Reinsertion in by mental health policies about alcohol and drugs, as well as concepts of psychosocial rehabilitation by Saraceno, among other authors. Still, among the concepts adopted for the analysis and interpretation of the data, we used the concept-process, by Sawaia, about the \"dialectic of exclusion/ inclusion\" which, as a form of analysis categorization, is based on the concept of ethical-political suffering, applied here to alcohol and drug users, however. Therefore, the analysis was unfolded into three categories: the professional\'s view about the social inclusion of alcohol and drug users; the Attention and Care to social inclusion; and the limits and potentiality to social inclusion of alcohol and drug users. The analysis shows that there are variations among professionals\' perceptions about social inclusion. Also, that the use of a single perception is not enough to comprehend effective actions of social inclusion. As for professionals\' procedures regarding social inclusion, it became clear that staff does not acknowledge the theme, showing difficulty to identify their own actions as of social inclusion procedures. The analysis also shows limits and potentiality of social inclusion of alcohol and drug users, pointed out by the professionals in three levels: firstly, factors depending on the professionals; secondly, aspects depending on the institution CAPS AD; thirdly, aspects which are beyond the realm the institution CAPS AD. This study also reveals the political-ideological influence of assistance models on the professionals at the Attention and Care of alcohol and drug users. Consequently, it exposes professionals\' perspectives and procedures towards social inclusion. That is still a theme to be widely discussed within the teams, so that mental health care for these users improves its quality

Framställningen av mödrars och fäders alkohol- och narkotikaanvändning i svensk nyhetspress : En kritisk diskursanalys av Dagens Nyheter och Aftonbladet / The depiction of mothers' and fathers' alcohol and drug use in Swedish news press : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Dagens Nyheter and AftonbladetHugo, Sofia, Fransson, Helena January 2016 (has links)
Parents’ use of alcohol and drugs is a subject which is discussed in various fields of research and social domains by different actors and professions. The aim of this study is to identify and analyse discourses which appear in Swedish news press (Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet), and which similarities and differences that can be discovered regarding motherhood and fatherhood in relation to alcohol and drug use. A Critical Discourse Analysis has been carried out based on Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional analytical model. The result shows that it is not possible to identify any distinct discourses in the material. Instead three wider discussions where identified: moral discussions about parenthood, discussions on the medical effects of alcohol and drug use, and reflexive and norm critical discussions about current gender roles. The study shows that news press discusses the fact that women’s/mothers’ use of alcohol and drugs tends to be described as more unacceptable and stigmatising in comparison to men’s/father’s use. The number of news articles discussing men’s/father’s use of alcohol and drugs, as well as parents’ drug use, are limited. The study also shows that there are signs of a more gender neutral outlook on parenthood in relation to alcohol and drug use.
