APPEARANCES ARE DECEIVING: LONG-DISTANCE SUBJECT ANAPHORS AND PHASAL BINDING DOMAINS

Almalki, Fahad A 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
An unusual behavior of anaphors is to occur in embedded subject positions and bebound across a finite clause boundary by a matrix subject. This thesis, however, demonstrates that such constructions exist in Malki Arabic, besides other languages. First, this thesis shows that the clause size of the embedded clause in which subject anaphors are allowed is CP and not always a TP. Second, in light of current reductionist approaches to binding domains of the classical binding theory to phase theory, a cross-clausal binding relation bears issues to those approaches, as a long-distance antecedence relation crosses a phase boundary. Taking long-distance bound subject anaphors as the main empirical focus in this thesis, I show that the cross-clausal binding relation in Malki Arabic is not bona fide evidence against reducing binding domains to phases. Following Wurmbrand (2019) and Lohninger et al. (2022), I propose that constructions with long-distance bound subject anaphors theoretically resemble cross-clausal A-dependencies, like hyperraising and long-distance agreement, for undergoing movement to a position in the edge of the embedded clause and showing similar properties. Third, I show that reducing binding domains to whole phases is plausible, but taking spell-out domains as binding domains is untenable. Finally, the proposal suggested in this thesis also sheds lights on the possibility of the anaphor agreement effect as an interface condition, in addition to highlighting an account for the accusative-marked embedded subject in Modern Standard Arabic.

The plural in anaphoric chains referring to individuals

Argenti, Anne-Marie 15 December 2017 (has links)
The cohesion of a text is based on a set of syntactic and pragmatico-semantic links between discourse units, including anaphoric referring terms. These terms ensure referential and thematic continuity in successive sentences, but are not sufficient to ensure the coherence of the chains. They involve inferences that enable the cognitive system to find the relationship of coherence expressed by the chain. In simple cases, the cognitive system resolves a pronominal anaphor by allocating to it a contextually relevant antecedent, selected from the salient elements that are active in memory. When the co-reference concerns plural arguments, the cognitive operations are more complex. In this case, it is necessary to take into account include not only the salience of the referents but also the type of relationship they have within the predicate of their host sentence. A collective hosting predicate will tend to remove distinctions between referents and will facilitate plural co-reference, unlike distributive predicates that facilitate singular coreference. Lexically reciprocal predicates, meanwhile, establish links of symmetry between entities that, are predicted to require specific cognitive processing. The links established between collective, distributive and symmetrical predicates are studied from a theoretical viewpoint. The influence of these links on the resolution of pronominal anaphora whose antecedent forms part of a plurality, or whose antecedents are dispersed in a comitative construction, is examined experimentally (psycholinguistic tests of production and comprehension). The theoretical study points to fundamental differences between reciprocal predicates and symmetrical predicates on the one hand, and between collective predicates and symmetrical predicates on the other. The experimental results support the theoretical study and lead to the proposal of an argumental pattern for symmetrical verbs.

A shallow processing approach to anaphor resolution

Carter, David Maclean January 1986 (has links)
The thesis describes an investigation of the feasibility of resolving anaphors in natural language texts by means of a "shallow processing" approach which exploits knowledge of syntax, semantics and local focussing as heavily as possible; it does not rely on the presence of large amounts of world or domain knowledge, which are notoriously hard to process accurately. The ideas reported are implemented in a program called SPAR (Shallow Processing Anaphor Resolver), which resolves anaphoric and other linguistic ambiguities in simple English stories and generates sentence-by-sentence paraphrases that show what interpretations have been selected. Input to SPAR takes the form of semantic structures for single sentences constructed by Boguraev's English analyser. These structures are integrated into a network-style text representation as processing proceeds. To achieve anaphor resolution, SPAR combines and develops several existing techniques, most notably Sidner's theory of local focussing and Wilks' "preference semantics" theory of semantics and common sense inference. Consideration of the need to resolve several anaphors in the same sentence results in Sidner's framework being modified and extended to allow focus-based processing to interact more flexibly with processing based on other types of knowledge. Wilks' treatment of common sense inference is extended to incorporate a wider range of types of inference without jeopardizing its uniformity and simplicity. Further, his primitive-based formalism for word sense meanings is developed in the interests of economy, accuracy and ease of use. Although SPAR is geared mainly towards resolving anaphors, the design of the system allows many non-anaphoric (lexical and structural) ambiguities that cannot be resolved during sentence analysis to be resolved as a by-product of anaphor resolution.

Tageszeitabhängige Leistungsschwankungen in der Verarbeitung anaphorischer Bezüge

Jessen, Anna 06 August 2014 (has links)
Everyone has an inner clock, which is not always synchronized with daytime and nighttime. The individual differences of the inner clock are genetically determined and can vary by up to 8 hours: “extreme larks wake up when extreme owls go to sleep” (Roenneberg, 2003). Many aspects of human life are influenced by circadian rhythms, e.g. physical performance, sleep/wake patterns, cell and organ functions and cognitive performance. Language processing, being a higher order cognitive function, is therefore also assumed to change over the course of the day. To date there are not many studies examining language performance and its diurnal variations. The goal of this thesis, then, is to study such variations in language processing with psycholinguistic methods, looking at the phenomenon of anaphoric reference processing. Many important linguistic theories address the question of how an anaphoric reference is processed (Centering Theory, Optimality Theory in the Centering Theory, Accessibility Theory). Most of these theories have an assumption of underlying economy in common: if the referent is easily accessible, the anaphor should be of a simple type, e.g. a personal pronoun. Demonstrative pronouns, such as the German d-pronouns (der, die, das), noun phrases and names are more complex anaphors which bear more information than a simple pronoun and should therefore refer to a less easily accessible antecedent. With three experiments this difference in anaphor type is examined for its diurnal changes: one behavioral field study in which shift workers were regularly tested during their shifts; and two ERP-experiments conducted at two different times of day. The ERP experiments demonstrate the diurnal changes in brain activity during anaphoric processing.

The discursive coherence in the written productions of the learners secondary schools in the Republic of Congo : anaphores and connectives

Nkoula-Moulongo, Solange 30 June 2016 (has links)
This doctoral thesis deals with an examination of the expression of discusivecoherence from the uses of anaphors and connectives by secondary and high school chidren in Congo. How do these linguistic tools exhibit textual cohesion? To make sense of the way in which certain cohesive markers organize the discursve cohernce, a contextualized and dynamic answer is provid in three parts. In forst party, the presentation of theories, context and methodogy is made. At this level the argument centres on three chapters. The first chapter focuses on the data from type of instruction that the pupils have receved. The third chapter presents our research methodology. Several operations are identified at this level. The second party concentrates on the "anaphoric appraoches". In chapter four, an examination of pronominal anaphors is carried out. In the fifth chapter, lexical anaphors are studied. In the light of Jean Michel Adam's (2008), Georges Kleiber's theories (1994), the uses of faithful, unfaithful, hyperononic, resomption and associatives by the learners. We devote two shapters here to takle the premiment pnenomina. Chapter six deals with enumerationand conclusion markers. In chapter seven, the argument centers on the justication and opposition connectives. These two types of connective are widely used in the congolese learners' papers.

More specifically, it is discussed the importance of taking the linguistic analysis as a standard practice in Portuguese teaching Among the various linguistic aspects to be approached in the classroom, this study considers the factors that contribute to the writing of the text, focusing on the reference process. The proposed research turns therefore to the bond that is established in the texts and the possibility of creating and recreating the facts and to (re) construct meaning through the reference process, which explains how the producer of the text shows the surrounding world, filtered by symbolic (cf. KOCH, ELIAS, 2006). Because of the nature of this work, it was necessary to narrow even more the object of study. Thus, among the elements that enable the (re) construction of discursive (MONDADA, DUBOIS, 2003), we decided to investigate the anaphors, especially the associative anaphor, focusing on the relations of meronymy, metonymy as well as the synonyms. It starts from the assumption that the linguistic approach can contribute to the formation of readers and writer of authentic texts in the classroom, since it occupies an important function in the text and it is responsible to print out the directions to reveal intentions, values and positions that the writer of the text wants to express. To see how this linguistic strategy contributes to the meaning (s) was selected as a corpus of analysis the short story O defunto, by Eça de Queiros. It was considered this genre because it is worked repeatedly in reading classes and represents the language in daily uses. Besides showing socially constructed situations, the short story offers to students the opportunity to experience different cultures and expand the boundaries of their world and encyclopedic knowledge. From this selection, we attempted to assess how the selected associative anaphor show judgments established by the author and guide the interpretation of the text. Supporting this analysis the authors involved in the study of the reference among them Koch (2005a, 2005b, 2008a, 2008b), Koch and Elias (2006), Cavalcante (2005a, 2005b), Cavalcante, Rodrigues and Ciulla ( 2003), Marcuschi (2005, 2007a), Mondada and Dubois (2003) and Apothéloz-Béguelin and Reichler (1995). Also utilized the works dealing with the question of genre (Bakhtin, 1992; MARCUSCHI, 2005, 2007b; DIONÍSIO, AX and Bezerra, 2007), the short story (JOLLA, 1976; BORDINI and AGUIAR, 1993), and specifically tale Lusitanian (MOSES, 1974, 1994).

The Sentence as a cognitive object. The Neural underpinnings of syntactic complexity in Chinese and French / La phrase en tant qu'objet cognitif.

Fabre, Murielle 07 December 2017 (has links)
Combining fine-grained linguistic analyses — from both typological and formal approaches to syntax — with neuro-imaging techniques (fMRI and ERP), this pluri-disciplinary research aims at investigating experimentally the issue of the hierarchical nature and complexity of the linguistic representation of sentence structure and its processing strategies across languages, specifically focusing on the case of Chinese Topic-Comment articulations and on French Interrogative constructions. The question of how the brain achieves sentence structure representation, building and understanding is often seen as one of the most important and unsolved issues of the neural organization of language. Leveraging on cross-linguistic invariance and variability in sentence hierarchical structure organization and building, we found in Chinese and French two exceptional testing grounds to isolate different syntactic complexity dimensions of the sentence-unit encoding. While the on-line auditory comprehension of sentence hierarchical structure in case of minimal intonational cues is investigated thanks to ERP recordings of Topic-Comment articulations in Chinese, two fMRI studies isolate two different syntactic complexity dimensions, respectively reflecting the sentence’s hierarchy and syntactic transformations. The first study, on French interrogative, seeks to isolate the neural correlates of different syntactic movement types. The second study, on Chinese sentence-discourse interface and Topics types, enables us to distinguish word-order surface complexity factors from syntactic movement transformations.

Comparative study of anaphors between Xitsonga and English

Masina, Millicent January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Translation and Linguistics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The aim of this study was to compare anaphors between Xitsonga and English. This study was to find out if there are any similarities and differences of anaphors between Xitsonga and English. The researcher also wanted to find the functions of anaphors in Xitsonga and English, the types of anaphors, as well as surface structures and deep structures of anaphors in Xitsonga and English. The researcher looked at the syntax of Xitsonga and English focusing on anaphors. The similarities and differences were discovered, the types of anaphors in Xitsonga and English, the functions of anaphors in Xitsonga and English, as well as the surface structure and the deep structure of anaphors in Xitsonga and English were compared. The interpretation and meaning of anaphors are the same but varies in syntax constructions. The findings of the study are that there are two types of anaphors in Xitsonga and in English, which are reflexives and reciprocals. In Xitsonga, prefixes of verbs form reflexivity, for example ‘tirhandza’ (loves herself). The prefix ti- from the verb tirhandza forms reflexivity. On the other hand, reciprocals are formed by suffixes, for example; ‘rhandzana’ (love each other). The suffix -ana from the verb rhandzana form reciprocity. This means anaphors in Xitsonga are formed by verbs. English uses pronouns like ‘himself’, ‘herself’ and ‘themselves’ to identify their anaphors. The study suggests that scholars must do further research on anaphors between Xitsonga and English. Academics, linguists among others, must be interviewed as they may have better interpretation of anaphors between Xitsonga and English.

Andújar Moreno, Gemma 19 December 2002 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to study the anaphoric occurrences of the French anaphors TEL and VOILÀ in a corpus made up of journalistic texts and their translations into Spanish. Our approach is semantic as well as pragmatic. According to the results, the target texts show a tendency to reproduce the anaphoric virtualities of the original text by using appropriate translational solutions of the target language. However, a sencondary translation tendency can also be detected: translating the anaphoric operation by using more explicit linguistic devices. These results confirm the idea that a translational behaviour should be regarded as a gradual notion, which is never a fully steady conduct.
