Ancoragem em rocha : avaliação da adesão entre nata de cimento e rochas sedimentares em ensaios de laboratório / Anchoring in rock: evaluation of bond strength between cement grout and sedimentary rocks by laboratory tests

Azevedo, Maurício Birkan January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation evaluates the determination of the adhesion parameter between cement grout and rock. This parameter is of great importance on design of two systems frequently executed that use the technique of anchoring: rock anchors and bolts. Pull out field tests are commonly carried out to evaluate this bond strength, however, they are normally only economically feasible during the construction stage. The Composite Cylinder Bond Test (CCBT) methodology allows the adhesion determination in a simpler and cheaper way, by laboratory tests using mixed samples of rock and cement grout. Therefore, the CCBT is an interesting alternative to project definition of adhesion values. In this context, three different sedimentary lithologies from Caçapava do Sul/RS, Southern Brazil, were studied. The lithologies – called here as conglomerate, fine sandstone and medium sandstone – belong to Varzinha Formation. The characterization of these lithologies were made by thin sections and characterization laboratory tests The textural classification of the conglomerate was sandy conglomerate, the fine sandstone was classified as muddy sandstone, and the medium sandstone was classified as sandstone. In the view of their composition, the fine sandstone was classified as arkose, while the medium sandstone was classified as lithic arkose. Ninety CCBT tests, besides unconfined compression tests on rock and cement grout specimens were carried out. The average adhesion values obtained from laboratory tests were 2,52 MPa for the conglomerate, 1,84 MPa for the fine sandstone and 1,43 MPa for the medium sandstone. An evaluation of confidence intervals of adhesion was also carried out, according to t-student distribution. It was concluded that the adhesion strength was influenced not only by the unconfined compressive strength of the rocks, but also by their water absorption and porosity. Larger values of these two properties increased the adhesion between the two materials. The values obtained from laboratory tests are compatible with literature field data in similar rocks.

TENSION STRENGTH OF EMBED PLATES WITH WELDED DEFORMED BARS AS GOVERNED BY CONCRETE BREAKOUT

Ata Ur Rehman (9183341) 15 January 2021 (has links)
<p>Embedded plates are used to support the external attachments such as heavy piping, brackets, sprinkler systems, or other equipment in nuclear power plants. The plates are welded with deformed reinforcing bars or deformed wires and anchored to reinforced concrete walls. The ACI code (ACI 318-19/ACI 349-13) provides design equations to calculate the anchor strength in concrete under tension load. These empirical equations are based on experiments conducted on headed studs, hooked bars, headed bolts, and adhesive anchors. With the lack of experimental data and code provisions on straight deformed reinforcing bars or deformed wires used as anchors, it is believed that anchoring bars with the embedment length as per code prescribed development length will provide sufficient strength to transfer tensile forces to the concrete, ignoring other failure modes such as concrete breakout. </p> <p>In this study, eight large scale group anchor tests were performed to evaluate their concrete breakout strength as per ACI 349-13. The test specimens were made with deformed reinforcing bar anchors (DRAs) and deformed wire anchors (DWAs). The tests included the effect of different bar types, bar sizes, and anchor spacings on the breakout capacities of such connections. The mean average back-calculated effective <i>k </i>value is 33.25 for DRAs and 36.26 for DWAs. The experimental study confirms that the axial tension capacity of embedded plates anchored to concrete using deformed reinforcing bars or deformed wires can be limited by concrete breakout strength.</p>

Exploring the relationship between self-esteem and career anchors in the financial services industry

Ndzobole, Fikiswa Cynthia 11 1900 (has links)
This research focused on the relationship between self-esteem and career anchors in the context of career development. The objectives of the study were twofold. The first was to establish the relationship between individuals’ self-esteem (as measured by the Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory) and career anchors (as measured by the Career Orientations Inventory); and the second was to determine if self-esteem significantly predict career anchors. An online survey was administered to a non-probability, convenience sample (n = 77) of full-time individuals, employed adults at managerial and general staff levels, in the South African financial services industry. The sample consisted of predominantly married (58.4%), white (44.2%), females (57.1%) between the ages 35 and 44 years (32.5%). The Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory for Adults (CFSEI 2-AD) and Career Orientations Inventory (COI) were used to gather data. Correlational analysis showed an association between the variables of CFSEI 2-AD and COI. A multiple regression analysis supported that self-esteem predict career anchors. Recommendations were suggested for use by human resource professionals to inform the career development of employees in the South African financial service industry. / Human Resource Management / M. Load capacity of anchorage to concrete at nuclear facilities : Numerical studies of headed studs and expansion anchors

Eriksson, Daniel, Gasch, Tobias January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to study the load bearing capacity of anchor plates, used for anchorage to concrete located at nuclear facilities. Two different type of anchor plates were examined, which together constitute the majority of the anchor plates used at Forsmark nuclear facility in Sweden. The first is a cast-in-place anchor plate with headed studs and the second is a post-installed anchor plate which uses sleevetype expansion anchors. Hence, anchors with both a mechanical or a frictional interlock to the concrete were examined. The main analysis tool was the finite element method, through the use of the two commercially available software packages ABAQUS and ADINA and their non-linear material models for concrete and steel. As a first step, the numerical methods were verified against experimental results from the literature. However, these only concern single anchors. The results from the verifications were then used to build the finite element models of the anchor plates. These were then subjected to different load combinations with the purpose to find the ultimate load capacity. Failure loads from the finite element analyses were then compared to the corresponding loads calculated according to the new European technical specification SIS-CEN/TS 1992-4 (2009). Most of the failure loads from the numerical analyses were higher than the loads obtained from the technical specification, although in some cases the numerical results were lower than the technical specification value. However, many conservative assumptions regarding the finite element models were made, hence there might still be an overcapacity present. All analyses that underestimate the failure load were limited to large and slender anchor plates, which exhibit an extensive bending of the steel plate. The bending of the steel plate induce shear forces on the anchors, which leads to a lower tensile capacity. In design codes, which assume rigid steel plates, this phenomenon is neglected. The failure loads from all different load combinations analysed were then used to develop failure envelopes as a demonstration of a useful technique, which can be utilised in the design process of complex load cases.

[pt] AS ÂNCORAS DE CARREIRA DOS TRABALHADORES DA GIG ECONOMY / [en] THE CAREER ANCHORS OF GIG ECONOMY WORKERS

MATHEUS DE MOURA CORTES COUTINHO 12 June 2023 (has links)
[en] In recent decades, changes in the work environment have led to the establishment of new career models that are no longer based on organizations, but on the worker themselves. Organizations and employees have become less dependent on and committed to each other. One of the alternative work arrangements that have emerged and grown in this scenario is the Gig Economy, characterized by work relationships mediated by platforms, temporary and contract-based. The recent rise, impact on the labor market, new characteristics, experiences, and work skills of the Gig Economy highlight the importance of understanding the professional orientations of these workers. Based on the understanding that these shifts in the work context are poised to intensify in the near future, the objective of this research was to determine the key career anchors of professionals in the Gig Economy. To accomplish this, Schein s inventory (1996) was administered to 211 Gig workers in the categories of ride-sharing, delivery services, tour guides, and writer/designers, to identify their work motivations, skills, and values. The two predominant career anchors identified were Lifestyle and Technical/Functional Competence while the least predominant anchor was General Managerial Competence.

Direktörer i diadem : En studie kring hur genusroller och stereotyper påverkarkarriärvägar och ledarskap inom företagsvärlden

Brommels, Vilma, Bäcklund, Josephine January 2024 (has links)
Title: Directors in Diadems - A Study on How Gender Roles and Stereotypes Affect Career Paths and Leadership in the Corporate World Level: Student thesis, Final Assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Authors: Vilma Brommels and Josephine Bäcklund Supervisor: Monika Wallmon Date: 2023 - January Aim: The aim of this study is to explore perceptions and expectations placed on men and women in leading positions within the corporate world, with a particular focus on how these perceptions and expectations are rooted in and influenced by gender roles according to Social role theory and Edgar Schein's career anchor theory. Method: Mixed method approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative techniques, with an emphasis on the qualitative part. A mixed-method approach has been employed, and the empirical data have been collected through both surveys and interviews with tenindividuals holding leadership positions. Results and conclusions: The study emphasizes that women, to a greater extent than men, feel the need to assert themselves and fight harder in the workplace. This confirms how social expectations and stereotypes create an environment where women feel compelled to overperform to achieve the same level of recognition as men. The study highlights how homosociality (the tendency to choose individuals similar to oneself) plays a significant role in the recruitment process. This phenomenon contributes to men being more often chosen for leadership positions, reinforcing gender differences in leadership. The study addresses that women generally need to demand higher salaries and not shy away from negotiations. Gender pay gaps are unmotivated and unfair since womenare offered a lower salary for the same work. It was found that women tend to gravitate towards the career anchor "sense of service," while men lean towards "lifestyle". This may reflect and reinforce traditional gender-specific expectations that influence career choices and development The study provides an in-depth analysis of how gender roles and stereotypes affect careerpaths and leadership within the corporate world, with special focus on gender-related expectations, wage disparities, recruitment biases, and the impact of career anchors. These insights are critical for understanding and challenging the prevailing norms that contribute to gender differences in leadership and professional development. Contribution of the thesis: Provides a theoretical contribution by combining Edgar Schein´s career anchor theory with Social role theory, offering a deeper understanding of the interplay between gender roles and motivations in career development. Practically, the study contributes insights for leadership and personnel development, by demonstrating how organizations can create more inclusive work environments that consider the impact of gender roles on career choices, which in turn can lead to increased job satisfaction and productivity. Suggestions for future research: Recommends exploring the differences and similarities in career choices between managers and employees through a more extensive selection. Such a study could provide deeper insight into how career anchors affect gender distribution in leadership positions. The existing research design, which combines career anchor theory with Social role theory, is robust and well-suited for continued testing in larger studies. Also suggests exploring the interaction between the principles of care ethics and leadership as well as career development. A continued study could include a theoretical basis around "Ethics of Care," which emphasizes relational and situationally adapted approaches. Particular focus should be placed on how ethics of care can impact career advancement and gender dynamics within various professional contexts, which would enrich understanding and contribute to the development of more inclusive work environments.

Toudji, Ikram 08 1900 (has links)
Recessive variants in the PIGB gene, encoding an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis pathway of GPI anchors, were recently described in children with an inherited GPI anchor defect and epileptic encephalopathy (EE), a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by early-onset epilepsy with cognitive impairment. GPI anchors are critical for the membrane attachment of at least 150 human proteins, some of which are important for proper neuronal function. Preliminary data from the Rossignol group show that the embryonic deletion of Pigb in GABAergic interneurons (INs) emanating from the medial ganglionic eminence (MGE) causes spontaneous seizures and cognitive deficits in mice, suggesting a critical role of PIGB in the establishment of cortical inhibition. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to epilepsy remain unknown. Given the central role of guidance molecules, some of which are GPI-anchored proteins, during neuronal migration, we postulate that loss of GPI anchors following the conditional deletion of Pigb in MGE-derived INs disrupts chemotactic guidance and IN migration dynamics, leading to cortical disinhibition and epilepsy post-natally. Time-lapse live imaging of MGE explants revealed that the targeted deletion of Pigb impairs the tangential migration as well as the morphological development of MGE-derived INs, resulting in reduced IN densities in the postnatal cortex. We showed that the kinetic deficits are partly due to a loss of EphA4-ephrinA2 motogenic signaling in PigbcKO INs. In summary, our work helps clarify the physiopathology underlying PIGB associated-EE and deepens our understanding of the roles of GPI-anchor-related pathways in neurodevelopment and more specifically, in the migration of cortical INs.

Petco Park: Evaluating Economic Health of the Dining Establishment Industry in the Vicinity of a Downtown Major League Baseball Stadium

Shukaylo, Georgy 02 April 2021 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis analyzes the economic health of the dining establishments in Downtown San Diego, CA, specifically in the vicinity of Petco Park. Opened in 2004, Petco Park is home to the San Diego Padres, a Major League Baseball franchise. In addition, it serves as a venue for outdoor concerts and shows. The venue is used for most of the year due to an expanded Major League Baseball schedule, especially compared to other professional sports. Much of the transformation of San Diego’s Downtown can be attributed to the late 1990’s East Village Revitalization Plan, which included municipal anchors like the San Diego Central Library, the San Diego Convention Center, and Petco Park. By looking at the restaurant industry as of 2019, this thesis strives to provide a better understanding of how an urban entertainment anchor provides grounds for mutually beneficial conditions to small businesses. Additionally, this thesis integrates the concept of economic health into the larger field of knowledge around urban professional sports stadia. Further, this thesis aims to burgeon a framework for taxonomic research of professional sports stadia.
