The influence of the angelology of 1 Enoch on Judaism in the Second Temple period / Influence of the angelology of First Enoch on Judaism in the Second Temple Period

Dingman, Terry William 31 March 2002 (has links)
Angelology emerged under the domination of Jewish groups. Reconstructing a brief history for Jewish groups of the second Temple Period is necessary to ascertain which Jewish group may be aligned with the angelology of 1 Enoch. Moreover, angelology developed within this natural historical context. An exploration of the tradition of angelogy includes angelic origins, their functions in the Hebrew Bible and the Septuagint, possible mythical associations, and speculation about why angels surfaced within Israelite religion. Examining the background, structure and contents of 1 Enoch will ensconce the Enochic writings, within the Second Temple Period. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / D.Litt. et Phil.

Marcelo Leonardo Ximenes 28 March 2017 (has links)
This project has the purpose of analyzing the relationship which exists between specific biblical texts and the Watchers tradition in Enochic Judaism. The Enochic tradition was born from reflections about the problem of evil, and attribute its origin to the rebellion of angelic beings against God. These angels corrupted themselves by teaching forbidden secrets to men, and by both taking women as their wives and having sexual relations with them. From these unnatural relations were born hybrid beings, the Nephilim, who in turn polluted the earth. By means of both the spirits of the Nephilim dead and fallen angels, we encounter the development of a theology of demonology. In order to reach the purpose of this project, we will reflect on the biblical arguments for the problem of evil, then we will investigate the enochic tradition, and, finally, we will specifically analyze the relation between some biblical texts and the Watchers tradition. By means of this analysis, we will be able to perceive that there is in fact a literary relationship between these biblical texts and the Watchers tradition, originating from Enochic Judaism.

Investidor anjo: uma análise dos critérios de decisão de investimento em startups / Business angel: an analysis of the decision making criteria for investment in startups

Fabio Gimenez Machado 06 October 2015 (has links)
Startups, characterized by the proposal to offer an innovative product or service with a high degree of uncertainty of success, usually have the need for foreign capital financing to help them reach their growth. Given the uncertainties surrounding a startup company, seldom are there funds available from banks or financial companies. In order to meet this gap in startups financing, one can find business angels, who are individual investors characterized by investing their own capital in startups. What they ask in return is a percentage in the company\'s management. The profile of these business angels has been studied in several countries, especially in the understanding of the criteria that these investors use to reach the investment decision. However, little is known about the criteria used by brazilian angel investors as far as this decision to invest in startups is concerned. Thus, the current study aims at analyzing the criteria that determine the brazilian business angels\' decision to invest in startups. In order to meet the objectives of this research, the methodology was structured in exploratory and descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was performed through interviews with business angels and experts, where there was an analysis of the importance given by these respondents to the seventeen investment decision criteria most frequently cited by business angels in the international literature, as well as the criteria rated as the most important ones. It was observed that brazilian business angels are similar to those from other countries as they acknowledge importance to the majority of surveyed criteria. The most important criteria cited were \"realistic profitability\", \"interest and benefits of the product\", \"innovation and product quality\" and \"ROI/valuation\". It was possible to identify similarities between brazilian business angels and angels from other countries concerning the importance of decision criteria identified in the literature. The research spotted limitations concerning the access to brazilian business angels, on the national literature and information on the profile of business angels in Brazil. It was observed that the business angel is still little studied by brazilian researchers, what makes it unable to identify a lot of research on this topic. This research contributes for being a step towards the understanding of a still little explored context, the process of investment decision by the angel investors in startups as well as to identify the investment decision criteria considered important by Brazilian angel investors.

An analytical study of "The masque of angels"

Psaute, Linda 01 January 1978 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to show how the music of “The Masque of Angels” articulates and supports the drama. The various musical techniques which make the complete composition will be examined to show how the composer draws them into one statement and proves himself the dramatist. The effect of the music on the text and that of the text on the musical construction is investigated to gain a clearer concept of the composer’s intent and the opera’s value to the twentieth century listener.

Angels Associated with Israel in the Dead Sea Scrolls / A Study of Angelology and Community Identity at Qumran

Walsh, Matthew January 2016 (has links)
A well-known characteristic of the Qumran sectarian texts is the boast that community membership included fellowship with the angels, but scholars disagree as to the precise meaning of these claims. In order to gain a better understanding of angelic fellowship at Qumran, this study utilizes the fact that an important facet of Early Jewish angelology was the concept that certain angels were closely associated with Israel. Specifically, these angels can be placed in one of two categories: guardians (i.e., warriors who strove against Israel’s enemies, celestial or otherwise) and priests (i.e., the celebrants of the heavenly temple). A crucial component of the presentation of both angelic guardians and angelic priests was that they were envisioned within apocalyptic worldviews that assumed that realities on earth mirrored those of heaven, with the latter serving as the ideal, archetypal, or “more real” world. After discussing the conceptual backgrounds of angels associated with Israel in the Ancient Near Eastern texts and in the pre-exilic, exilic, and early post-exilic texts of the Hebrew Bible, this study sets out to compare how angelic guardians and angelic priests are presented in both the sectarian texts and the late Second Temple Period compositions of a non-sectarian provenance found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. While the non-sectarian compositions clearly posit a connection, correspondence, or parallel relationship between the angels and the Jewish people, an interesting facet of these works is that they imply definitions of Israel that are either quite generous or more stringent but paradoxically tempered by universalistic sentiments. Conversely, the witness of the sectarian compositions is that the Yahad viewed itself alone as the true Israel of God, with these texts evincing the belief that the angels associated with Israel had a unique connection to the sectarians, who had effectively usurped for themselves the privileges that were formerly those of the entire nation. Moreover, the texts which speak of angelic fellowship – both during the eschatological war and in the present time – suggest that sect members upheld the lofty self-estimation that they were either equal to the angels in some sense or had even attained a rank and glory higher than the angels. Given that the sectarians were convinced that their reconstitution of Israel’s covenant was the nation as it ought to be, there arguably would have been no better way for the Yahad to promote itself as such than to boast that the sect members were equal to – and even outranked – the guardians and priests of heavenly, archetypal Israel. Thus, while there has been scholarly disagreement as to the exact meaning of the sectarian angelic fellowship claims, this thesis demonstrates that at least part of the meaning is to be found in the contribution these claims make to the identity of the sect as the true Israel of God. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
