Lessons after Barbauld : the conversational primer in late-eighteenth-century BritainLim, Jessica Wen Hui January 2019 (has links)
This thesis explores how Anna Letitia Barbauld's book Lessons for Children Aged Two to Three Years (1778) facilitated the development of the conversational primer. This genre, which has not yet been theorised, may be identified by the way the texts present themselves as verisimilar and replicable sets of conversations, and depict parent-teachers and child-pupils as companions. This genre challenges the idea that there is a dichotomy between 'adult' and 'child' readers, a concept that inflects many contemporary approaches to children's literature studies. Through a close reading of Lessons for Children and subsequent conversational primers, this thesis suggests that Barbauld's Rational Dissenting value of discursive diversity influenced British middle-class children's culture, enabling the voices of verisimilar children to proliferate children's books on a previously unknown scale. The Introduction establishes ways in which concepts of child-parent relationships were used as paradigms for understanding modes of government in eighteenth-century Britain. Chapter One examines how children's books prior to Lessons for Children addressed different types of implied child readers with the aim of producing members of an ideal society. Chapter Two explores how Barbauld created a space in which parents could participate in the children's literature market through her introduction of the parent-author as a literary trope, her portrayals of verisimilar mother-child interactions in accessible, domestic spaces. Chapter Three charts how Lessons for Children became the prototype from which subsequent conversational primers drew their literary identity. The fourth chapter contextualises Lessons for Children as an expression of Barbauld's Rational Dissent, and posits that the rise of the conversational primer is indicative of the influence of Rational Dissenting values upon British middle-class children's culture. Chapter Five contrasts the afterlife of the conversational primer with children's books that generated readers' imaginative identification with characters. This comparison suggests that conversational primers encapsulated middle-class Georgian ideals regarding familial learning; an historical specificity that is, in part, responsible for the genre's popular demise. This thesis studies the lifecycle of the conversational primer in the British children's literature market. It examines the porousness between paratextual materials and texts, and shows how an individual author stimulated generic development by popularising specific literary tropes. By theorising the genre of the conversational primer, this study provides a new and productive discourse concerning adult-child interactions in children's literature.

Previous issue date: 2017-03-16 / Sem bolsa / Esta dissertação pretende, por meio de um estudo do romance Em Trânsito e do conto O Passeio das Meninas Mortas, da escritora alemã Anna Seghers, investigar o totalitarismo e as suas consequências, mais especificamente, o exílio. Hospitalidade, hostilidade, a percepção do estrangeiro como intruso e o seu isolamento em si próprio são temas relevantes no contexto de exílio. O espaço biográfico também é explorado nas narrativas de Seghers, uma vez que elementos autobiográficos são característicos da literatura da autora, a qual serve como testemunho e como arquivo de um período importante do século XX. Anna Seghers insere fatos de sua vida e até o seu nome em seus textos. Quando um nome é assinado alguém pode ser responsabilizado. A autora assina o nome e assim ela resiste. A literatura de Anna Seghers serve a um propósito maior do que somente o de contar as suas experiências individuais. Ela serve para fortalecer a consciência moral de toda a sociedade. / This dissertation intends, throught a study of the novel Transit and the short story The Excursion of the Dead Girls, by the german writer Anna Seghers, to investigate totalitarianism and its consequences, more especifically, the exile. Hospitality, hostility, the perception of the foreigner as an intruder and his isolation in himself are relevant themes in the context of exile. The biographical space is also explored in Seghers’ narratives, since the autobiographical elements are characteristic in the author’s literature, which serves as testimony and as archive of an important period of the 20th century. Anna Seghers inserts facts of her life and even her name in her texts. When a name is signed someone may be held accountable. The author signs her name and this way she resists. Anna Seghers’ literature serves a greater purpose than just the telling of her individual experience. It serves to strenghten moral conscience of the entire society.

Anna Maria Lenngren (née Malmstedt, 1754-1817) was an eminent poet in Sweden during the 18th century and she is still known as one of Stockholms Posten’s sharpest satirists. The early stage of her career as a translator, when she was recognised as “mamsell Malmstedt”, had a great impact on her following work, which has been largely neglected. This master’s thesis analyses her largest translations: Lucile (1776), Zemire och Azor (1778), Arsène (1779), and Dido til Eneas (1778), in comparison with their originals. Throughout the work with comparing the translations to their originals, it became clear that two expressions, often used to describe the female main characters in the texts, are frequently added and/or emphasized in mamsell Malmstedt’s translations: virtue (dygd) and folly (dårskap). Through these expressions, Malmstedt changes the stories and themes of the original texts, and through her use of virtue and folly in her translations, we get access to a background, to a world of ideas, that can give us a greater understanding of her own poems and of her thoughts about being a writing woman in Sweden during the 18th century. To develop a better understanding of this world of ideas, this thesis takes its starting-point in the history of virtue, and uses a feminist literary theory by Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, which explains how and why women’s roles in literature, as either angels or monsters, have had a great impact on female writers throughout history. Gilbert and Gubar’s theories are of great interest for this thesis since the female main characters in Anna Maria Malmstedt’s translations, defined by either virtue or folly, could be seen as ancestors of the angelic and monstrous characters that Gilbert and Gubar are discussing.
