Vivências de adolescentes anoréxicas /Ramos, Fabiana Neme Nogueira. January 2009 (has links)
With the incidence growing since half of the 20th century, anorexia is related to the modern occidental esthetics patterns, which gives more importance to skinny bodies and worships the body, being more common in teenagers and young women. The most found symptoms are eating restrictions, weight loss, gastrointestinal problems, amenorrhea, and others. A very present fact in the anorexic teens is the disturbed perception of themselves and their bodies, although there are few researches that reveal how these girls live and give meanings to their experiences. The main objective of this present work is to comprehend the anorexic girl's lives in a phenomenological way, trying to study the subjective phenomenon to contribute to understand what happens with those girls and find better therapy possibilities to help those patients. For the results, it was used semi structured interviews, audio recorded, with 9 adolescents of the female gender, between the ages of 16 and 22years old, which had diagnosed with the bulimic and the restrictive nervous anorexia disorder. The questions were based in how they saw their bodies, the family relationship (with the parents and siblings); the auto perception and the care with their bodies. The answers were analyzed with the living life as they related to the thematic category meanings given by the same girls to their experiences, according the studies objective. The main results found reveal a life of anxiety and anguish facing a body seen as fat, which doesn't show the reality. Those lives resulted in many wishing a skin and idealized body. The eating habits are seen an unpleasant, generating guilt, scare and pain, because of the simple thought of gaining weight. Health means being skinny, even if the have to starve... Phenomenological approaches to understanding pro-anorexiaTelford, Elina Hailey January 2012 (has links)
Background/aim: Pro-anorexia is a relatively new internet phenomenon. Few papers have been published on the topic; however, these have largely focused on the content of the sites and the effects of viewing them. The studies presented in the thesis were designed to inform our understanding of both the lifeworld and lived experiences of pro-anorexia, with a view to informing both academic and clinical understanding of the phenomenon. Design: Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was employed to explore the lived experience and descriptive phenomenology (DP) was utilised to investigate the lifeworld of the pro-anorexic user. Methods: Eight females were recruited to interviews, which were later transcribed and analysed with IPA. Two pro-anorexic blogs were identified one of which was written by a female and the other a male; these were analysed using DP. Results: The IPA study identified sub-ordinate themes: 'trajectory', 'boosting of the self and 'thinspiration', each with their own independent subordinate themes. The blog studies produced differing themes; however, the studies collectively demonstrated similarities which contributed to the understanding of why people may use these and subsequently disengage from the websites across the stages of eating disorder illness. Conclusion: Pro-anorexia clearly has a significant meaning and is very consuming for its users who present with eating disorder symptoms across the spectrum of illness. Clinicians should adopt a clinical stance (Geller, Williams and Srikameswaran, 2001) which fosters curiosity and acceptance, whilst suspending judgment when working with clients with eating disorders, specifically those who use pro-ana. In doing this it is anticipated that shame associated with use will be reduced and in being heard, users will be less likely to resort to pro-anorexic materials. It has been found that where services fail to work with the clients current stage of change (Prochaska and DiClemente, 1983) then pro-anorexic use is likely to re-occur. The findings of the studies included in this thesis also demonstrate a need for contributors to both popular and academic media alike, to engage in wider consultation to establish the most useful way in which to present pro-anorexia in the public and academic domain and hence, provide warnings on the topic, rather than signpost those who are vulnerable to eating disorder symptomology.

The increased rate of anorexia has prompted the health sciences and public services to make it one their great concerns. Multiple research works have been conducted to better understand anorexia and improve the intervention techniques. In the same way, the public services began to treat it with greater priority, in some cases, to the extent of creating specialized outpatient facilities. This research has the purpose of analyzing the significance of anorexia, mainly produced by scientific literature on the subject and expressed in some narrations of patients with this diagnostic. Therefore, we made a survey of the concept and historical study of anorexia, beginning with Freud and psychoanalysts who directly address the subject, also considering the psychiatric description of this issue. Subsequently, we searched current authors on the problem, not only from the strict view of Psychoanalysis but also those who analyze anorexia as a symptom of our time. Simultaneously, we executed a field work through interviews with anorexics treated in a Program of Eating Disorders connected to a Faculty of Medicine. Lastly, we divided the material into topics, which made possible a close approach this problematic issue, from the theoretical point of view as well as these empirical experiments. We observed that the point of view of the researched authors is different, especially regarding the treatment of anorexia. It is a complex subject, which has multiple aspects that cannot be summarized... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Kvinnors upplevelser av anorexia nervosa : En litteraturstudieSöderberg, Marcus, Brännström, Emil January 2016 (has links)

Tales from the edge : sufferers' perspectives of the role of psychotherapy in recovery from anorexia nervosaRamage, Michelle January 2013 (has links)
As a psychotherapist working in the field of eating disorders, I have a long-standing interest in accessing the subjective expertise of a wider group of sufferers, including what it is like and what it means to suffer from anorexia, the factors that help to support recovery and the role psychotherapy plays in contributing towards the recovery process. This study provides a timely addition to the literature on the nature and role of psychotherapy as a treatment for anorexia. Studies that explore the sufferer’s understanding and experience of developing anorexia are extremely limited and a gap exists in examining the role of psychotherapy from the recipient’s position and the ways in which psychotherapy supports an individual's recovery process. However, as this thesis demonstrates, people who have suffered and recovered from anorexia hold valuable information on the factors that support recovery and their expertise as recipients of psychotherapy has much to teach clinicians and researchers in the field of eating disorders. The theoretical foundation of this study conceptualises experience in relation to its narration. I recruited twelve participants drawn from across Scotland who provided narrative data during a focus group and a semi structured individual interview. Participants provided experiential accounts on developing anorexia, on recovery and the role of psychotherapy in their recovery process. A phenomenological approach to data analysis was deployed using Smith et al’s (2009) Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as a methodological guide. Drawing upon an IPA methodology I identified a number of central themes. Within accounts of developing anorexia, themes relating to interpersonal attachment, trauma and/or identity played a central role in the illness beliefs and experiences of participants. Within accounts of recovery, participants offered two main framings. The first defined recovery as an achievable completion point, signally the end of illness. The second defined recovery as an on-going process concerned more with the management of anorexia than the elimination of it. Factors that support recovery included those that are integral to the individual participant as well as those that are made available by their environment. In accounts of the role of psychotherapy, a number of common factors across participants’ experiences of psychotherapy were identified spanning support, learning and action factors. In addition, the quality of the therapeutic relationship with the psychotherapist played a crucial role in supporting the recovery process. I argue that participant beliefs about and experiences of recovery directly relate to their understandings and perceptions about what precipitated anorexia. Recovery took place when changes could be made in relation to these significant themes and psychotherapy was most effective when it addressed these issues as part of the psychotherapy process. The findings from this study point to the importance of working with the subjective understandings and beliefs sufferers have about their illness experience as a key objective within psychotherapy practice. They also underline the significance of a strong therapeutic relationship as a key component of the recovery process.

Are overvalued ideas about weight and shape overvalued ideas in the diagnosis of early onset anorexia nervosa?Frampton, Ian January 1996 (has links)
Objective: The Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) is a reliable and valid semi-structured interview, which measures the specific psychopathology of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. This study aims to investigate the psychometric properties of the child adaptation of version 12.0D of the EDE (ChEDE 12.0). Method: The ChEDE 12.0 was administered to 15 children with anorexia nervosa (AN), 15 children with other clinical eating disturbances and two groups of 15 age-matched controls. The groups were compared using a two sample matched groups design. Results: Alpha coefficients for each of the ChEDE 12.0 subscales indicated a high degree of internal consistency, and inter-rater reliability was found to be high (r=0.91 to r=1.00). The subscale scores of the AN group were significantly higher than those of the other groups, whilst the other eating disturbance group did not differ from its control group. Discussion: The ChEDE 12.0 differentiates children with AN from children with other forms of clinical eating disturbance and control children. The hypothesis that children with early onset anorexia nervosa would not evidence significant weight and shape concern is refuted
