Tomo - Materializing the implications of data gathering in a domestic setting

Højholdt, Nina Cecilie January 2017 (has links)
This project investigates the implications surrounding increased data collection in a domestic setting. Applying a research through design approach, the project uses sketching and prototyping as a way to materialize and explore the field. Topics such as privacy and Big Data are explored, and the complex relationship between people and data gathering is investigated. This relationship is embodied in the final prototype, an interactive creature named Tomo, which feeds on the data people produce in their homes. The design of Tomo seeks to communicate these issues applying theory on information visualization, facilitating attachment between humans and computational artefacts and expression of emotion in robotics.

Maskot som kommunikativ strategi : En semiotisk analys av antropomorfa karaktärer på flingpaket / Mascot as a communicative strategy : A semiotic analysis of anthropomorphic characters on cereal packaging

Persson, Olivia January 2022 (has links)
This essay compares five breakfast cereal packages to study how they visually communicate to the audience through anthropomorphic mascots. The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge of how the use of anthropomorphic mascots can help a brand communicate. To study this, a semiotic analysis has been used on five different cereal packages, Kellogg´s Frosties, Kellogg´s Coco Pops, Nesquik, Froot Loops and Kalaspuffar. The analysis was later compared with different research papers to confirm and discuss the results that anthropomorphic mascots are a good way to communicate to create a relationship with children and adults. Anthropomorphic mascots resemble characters in childhood stories that children are already familiar with. Cereal packaging also use nostalgia to communicate to adults/parents through well used mascots and familiar design.

More than a Chatbot: The Rise of the Parasocial Relationships : A qualitative exploratory case of the impact of anthropomorphic AI on users- case of Replika

Kherraz, Anass, Zhao, Xuefei January 2024 (has links)
This study investigates the complex relationship between anthropomorphism in AI and its impact on human-AI interactions, particularly within the new concept of parasocial relationships. Through a user study analyzing interactions with the Replika chatbot, we identified key anthropomorphic design components that influence emotional bonding and user engagement. Findings indicate that human-like characteristics can enhance user satisfaction and involvement, yet excessive anthropomorphism may lead to frustration and disappointment, similar yet different from the uncanny valley concept. The paper suggests that anthropomorphism in AI design should be properly balanced so that the user has a positive experience and trust in the technology. The following paper, then, is based on thematic analysis related to user comments and brings out the fine-grained dynamics of human-AI relationships, suggesting the way forward for the future development of AI whereby emotional intelligence is integrated into the development of AI alongside the societal considerations.

Antropomorfinio prekės ženklo įvaizdžio įtaka vartotojo suvokiamai vertei / The influence of anthropomorphic brands image to customer perceived value

Urbanskaitė, Šarūnė 23 January 2014 (has links)
In today’s world, there are abundance of brands, and in order to survive – you must stand out. Bonafé.pdf: 45335654 bytes, checksum: 06155aeb1d47a0fcc2da53fa702abadf (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-04-19 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The lexical item “market” when lifted to the condition of a human being does not comprise a recent phenomenon. In the 18th century, Adam Smith, one of the classic authors of modern economic theory had already provided the market with an “invisible hand”. Currently, given the characteristics of Neoliberalism with the shrinking of the public space and the dissemination of the private space, the market has been playing a big role and the economy has been turned into a fetish taken as the hope of salvation for all problems; thus, the politics, as a republican and democratic activity is drained. Facing such disruption, the objective of this dissertation is to apprehend the anthropomorphism of the market phenomenon (assignation of typically human actions, attitudes or feelings to the market) through the concept of discursive formula, considered as a particular category of discursive position, according to Alice Krieg-Planque. To do so, some data were collected from the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo related to an extremely emblematic period of time from the social historical point of view, marked by an intense public opinion debate: the impeachment process against Dilma Rousseff. It was assumed as a hypothesis that the anthropomorphism of the market – labeled so in this assignment - characterizes a discursive phenomenon. Based on the theoretical-methodological approach developed by Alice Krieg-Planque, lexical-syntactic structures that displayed signs of an anthropomorphized market through/in the discourse were analyzed, which resulted in a combination of theory and corpus that has led to an expansion of the discussions about the historical and social aspects, the background that enabled the outset and the occurrence of this discursive phenomenon. Over and above its possible label as a formula, the functioning of the study object as a social referent as well as the recognition of a certain discursive position were observed / O item lexical “mercado” alçado à condição de ser humano não constitui um fenômeno recente.

Framing Nature : A discussion on the ethics of animal confinement in animal parks

Thörnqvist, Hampus January 2019 (has links)
The confinement of animals is today a widespread, widely accepted practice, regardless of the intention behind it. The confinement of animals for entertainment purposes, however, poses ethical questions that transgress the body of the animal itself and onto the boundaries of the human. What happens when a captured animal behaves differently from what we expect of it? Different from what we’ve trained it to? SeaWorld and Kolmården are two parks that both display animals in different ways. Both advertise themselves as offering unique experiences; close up encounters with animals that would most likely not happen in the wild. Both parks have also been subject to predatory animals behaving in unexpected ways. Furthermore, the artificial relationships established between humans and nonhumans in captivity have in the cases of SeaWorld and Kolmården proven to create a dangerous environment for both humans and animals. The ethical dilemmas that arises in correlations with the deadly-outcome incidents that have occurred in the parks, takes the form of questions regarding if confining animals such as wolves and orcas are ethically defensible in the first place

Influence comportementale online : études dans le paradigme de la soumission sans pression / Behavioral influence online : studies in the compliance without pressure paradigm

Barbier, Laura 29 June 2018 (has links)
The aim of compliance without pressure techniques is to get people to spontaneously adopt a behavior. Since the 1960s, they have shown their efficiency. The popularization of computer-mediated communications (CMC) raises the question of whether the influence processes remain effective and on what conditions. Among the existing CMCs, we wish to use the study field provided by the Massively Multiplayer Online Game because the interindividual interactions are numerous and it is necessary to create an avatar to access them. In agreement with some research, we think that the avatar appearance is a variable that significantly influences the individual’s behavior. Our objectives are to replicate the effects of compliance techniques and to specify the criteria to be considered in order to achieve the target behavior. A series of four studies, testing techniques of compliance without pressure (foot-in-the-door, foot-in-the-face, door-in-the-face, but you are free to…) are put in place. Results cannot be explained to the full extend by the common theories used in real life studies, however, they present new theoretical and methodological perspectives in terms of behavior changes induction in CMC.

Through bibliographic research, we found expressive and unique portrayal of animals in the work of referred writers, dialoguing in several moments. It?s our interest, thereby, to investigate in which way the animal provided with human features is represented in the narratives, as well as in which way the authors approach the relationship among animals, men and the world surrounding them, which, in the case of the referred material, is situated, physically and emblematically, mainly, in a rural setting. Our reading privileges the implications of the man-animal relationship in written works of the referred authors, implications that are based, mostly, in alternative knowledge, recognitions and dichotomies. The selected corpus are the books ?Bichos?, by Torga, and ?Ave, Palavra?, ?Sagarana?, and ?Estas est?rias? by Guimar?es Rosa. It is noteworthy, as well, that we took as reading operators the notion of anthropomorphism and the resource of comparative analysis.

Just now I meet a crocodile, who was driving around in a car" : Toddlers competences in the subject of biology

Almgren Damberg, Ingrid January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to show young children's competences in the subject of biology. I hope that my work will lead to that the subject of biology is used more often in the preschool context. In my work I have had an intra-active theory as a base. I have searched for what children are interested in on the subject of biology. Here, I can conclude that animals and plants are major interests for the children. Furthermore, I wanted to explore the ways in which children's knowledge became visible. For the most part, small children (along with educators) use animism and anthropomorphism, however, this is often interwoven with facts. I also wanted to know whether there were factors that contributed to children's learning in biology. It became clear that factors such as outdoor stay and live animals and plants contributed to a fact-based learning in biology. In contrast, factors such as indoor stay and toys were important factors for an animistic and anthropomorphic learning in biology. Educators also have a crucial role in children's learning in biology. Through an intra-active approach, I note that both the factual events of biology and animism and anthropomorphism contribute to the child's creation of knowledge in biology.
