Angela Cristina Sarvat de Figueiredo 30 October 2008 (has links)
This dissertation, insert on the research segment of Politics and Culture, talks about Eça de Queirozs critical vision about the Catholic Church, the popular catholicism and the Church-State relations in Portugal on the XIX century.

Santos, Carlos Henrique Neres dos January 2019 (has links)
Abstract: This research aims to comprehend the function that caricatures fulfilled inside the strategy of combat against clericalism by the paulista newspaper A Lanterna – folha anticlerical e de combate, during its second phase, from 1909 to 1916. This work is oriented by the theoretical approach linked to the history of reading, in which the history of the press is comprehended as a field of interest where the ambits of production, diffusion and reception of the printed material crisscross, in Robert Darnton’s thinking, and the senses that ideas and imaginary diffused by him take, as well as its sociocultural articulations. The methodological approach will consist in collecting and compiling images; organizing and sorting them according to previously established criteria, preferably suggested by the source; and lastly, make the analysis and publishing of the results. The faith and the fury : popular anticlerical violence and iconoclasm in Spain, 1931-1936

Thomas, Maria January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is an exploration of the motives, mentalities and collective identities which lay behind acts of popular anticlerical violence and iconoclasm during the pre-war Spanish Second Republic (1931-1936) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The five year period following the proclamation of the democratic Second Republic in April 1931 was marked by physical assaults upon the property and public ritual of the Spanish Catholic Church. These grassroots attacks were generally carried out by rural and urban anticlerical workers who were frustrated by the Republic's practical inability to tackle the Church's vast power. On 17-18 July 1936, a rightwing military rebellion divided Spain geographically, provoking the radical fragmentation of power in territory which remained under Republican authority. The coup marked the beginning of a conflict which developed into a full-scale civil war. Anticlerical protagonists, with the reconfigured structure of political opportunities working in their favour, participated in an unprecedented wave of iconoclasm and violence against the clergy. During the first six months of the conflict, innumerable religious buildings were destroyed and almost 7,000 religious personnel were killed. This thesis challenges standard interpretations which link these acts to irrationality, criminality and primitiveness. It focuses directly upon the agents of anticlerical violence, exploring the connections between the anticlerical outpouring of July 1936 and those forms of anticlericalism that were already emerging before the coup. It argues that Spanish popular anticlericalism was a phenomenon which was undergoing a radical process of reconfiguration during the first three decades of the twentieth century. During a period of rapid social, cultural and political change, anticlerical acts took on new, explicitly political meanings, becoming both a catalyst and a symptom of social change. After 17-18 July 1936, anticlerical violence became an implicitly constructive force for many of its protagonists: an instrument with which to build a new society.

PARTIPRIESTS and FRÈREQUISTES? Parti Pris, the Front de libération du Québec, and the Catholicity of Québécois Anticlericalism, 1963-1970

Ciufo, Carly 27 September 2012 (has links)
On March 7 1963, some bombs exploded at a few military barracks in Québec. These blasts announced the start of a campaign mounted by the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ). The founders of Parti Pris responded in intellectual solidarity with the FLQ’s motives by publishing their first issue in October. By 1968, Parti Pris ceased publication. After the October Crisis in 1970, the FLQ was widely discredited. Although many Partipristes and Felquistes dispersed into more generalized circles of local activism and party politics, they defined, informed, and mobilized a new generation of Québécois towards national liberation between 1963 and 1970. During their time of influence, Partipristes and Felquistes consistently pointed to a Catholic morality in Québec that revered passivity as a root cause and symptom of their colonial oppression. Some historians have suggested they were aberrant apostles of rupture with Québec’s history and traditions. This sort of reading finds some basis in declamations of the radicals themselves. But this thesis argues that both Parti Pris and the FLQ were developments of, and not definitive breaks with, Québec’s Catholic tradition. By analyzing the writings of Partipristes Paul Chamberland, André Major, and Pierre Maheu alongside those of Felquistes Pierre Vallières and Francis Simard, it claims that no historical appreciation of their lives and generation can sidestep the Catholicism that shaped them as individuals and the social milieu to which they responded. / Thesis (Master, History) -- Queen's University, 2012-09-27 02:23:23.413

Joaquim Catunda e a recepÃÃo do debate evolutivo na segunda metade do sÃculo XIX / Joaquim Catunda and the reception of evolutionary debate in the second half of the nineteenth century

NÃvia Marques Monteiro 29 August 2014 (has links)
This present paper attempts to analyze the scientific conceptions of Joaquim Catunda (1834 - 1907) with the aim of understanding the reception of evolutionary ideas and racialist in the second half of the nineteenth century, like Darwinism and other evolutionary theories. Intellectual and political, Catunda was born in CearÃ, author of Estudos de HistÃria do Cearà (1886), one of the founders of the Historical Institute of Cearà and Senator. Throughout the second half of the nineteenth century, the evolutionary debate addressed issues such as the origin of man and the debates between science and religion. By analyzing the writings of Catunda, specifically Estudos de HistÃria do CearÃ, we identified a clear evidence of the interest of Catunda by studies of these issues, including the antiquity of American man, the chances of peopling of America, supported by evolutionary assumptions and other theories sought to explain the emergence and development of man. In this sense, the focus of our discussion are the theoretical matrices of Catunda, analyzed through their intellectual production of historiographical nature, in order to problematize the appropriation of these ideas by the author and understand how evolutionary ideas allied to the historiographical discourse were interpreted while studied its political and intellectual trajectory.
