Andraspråkselever och det matematiska språket

Holmqvist, Andreas January 2019 (has links)
The study included transcripts from seven students with Swedish as a second language in grade 3, with the purpose being focusing on how they experience language during mathematic lessons and how second language learners´ learning could be understood from a sociocultural perspective. Each student was individually interviewed. My method for interviewing the students was using a semi-structured way of interviewing, meaning that I had predefined questions with room for asking follow up-questions during the interviews. The students were asked questions about their background, and they also got to answer mathematical questions including mathematical terms and words. They were asked questions about what they found difficult and easy within the mathematical questions. The second language learners had in general low difficulty with the understanding of the mathematical language in the mathematical questions. The results show that the students have appropriated knowledge by scaffolding and the zone of proximal development, which is part of the sociocultural perspective of learning. A conclusion is that the students didn’t show any signs of having trouble understanding words within mathematics that usually causes confusion among second language learners. When it comes to further developing their language skills a support of pictures can be used to describe difficult words, further can physical material also be used while learning second language learners´ new mathematical terms and words. The physical material can also act in combination with pictures to easier explain new mathematical terms and words.

Qualitative Case Study on Cell Phone Appropriation for Language Learning Purposes in a Dominican Context

Martiz, Gisela 01 August 2015 (has links)
This research study investigated how a Dominican English language teacher and her students appropriated cell phone features for educational purposes inside and outside the classroom. The dissertation used a qualitative approach that focused on the teacher, and four students selected from a class of 23. Data collection took place for 8 weeks in an English language center located at a public university in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2014. I collected data through interviews, conversations, classroom observations, and questionnaires. Data were analyzed to identify emerging themes that described how the teacher and students used their cell phones for different educational activities related to English language learning. Findings identified four major themes on how the teacher used different cell phone features for educational purposes: cell phone as connectivity tool, content delivery tool, research and reference tool, and assessment facilitation tool. Findings from the four student subcases indicated that they appropriated features in their cell phones in different ways, including: iPod as a cell phone (student 1), assessment and feedback facilitation tool (student 2), peer- and self-assessment facilitation tool and e-reader (student 3), and multimedia delivery and social interactivity tool (student 4). Themes across subcases and from the classroom in general indicated that participants used features that allowed them to use their cell phones as tools for data gathering and note taking, reference and research, collaboration, and repository. Findings from this dissertation shed light on how a teacher and students can make use of their own mobile technologies to support English language learning in a Dominican classroom with uneven access to technology.

Black Influencers: Interrogating the Racialization and Commodification of Digital Labor

Stevens, Wesley Elizabeth, 0000-0003-0492-5468 January 2022 (has links)
This dissertation examines how Black influencers navigate the highly competitive commercial terrain of influencing. Situated within literature about the commodification of the Black feminine body, neoliberal discourses about individualized digital labor, and the racialization of discourses about Black labor and success, I argue that celebrity status flattens and makes palatable political projects easily consumed by digital audiences. In particular, brands and digital media companies appropriate woke culture at the expense of Black communities, influencers, and people by propping up economic solutions to racial strife and diversifying their public facing images. By offering individualized, market-based solutions, brands and media outlets obscure the systemic forces that plague Black influencers who are precariously positioned within a mode of digital labor that lacks a supportive infrastructure and exacerbates their vulnerabilities. Contextualized by the George Floyd protests of 2020, I further argue that Black influencers do not internalize neoliberal logics or pursue aspirational labor in the same way as their white counterparts due to the material vulnerabilities and systemic pressures explicitly shaping Black women’s experiences on visually oriented platforms such as Instagram and YouTube. Rather, Black influencers challenge traditional definitions of influencing, traversing the line between ‘conventional’ and political work by actively addressing the way systemic issues permeate the sphere of digital labor. Although Black influencers adopt a hustle and grind mentality indicative of neoliberal governmentality, they also work to reclaim their bodies, voices, and individuality against a space fraught with the politics of representation. / Media & Communication

Wrestling with Father Shakespeare: Contemporary Revisions of King Lear and The Tempest.

Presley, Erin Melinda Denise 01 May 2004 (has links) (PDF)
In Shakespeare’s The Tempest and King Lear, the relationship between the father and his children affects the progression and outcome of events. Goneril and Regan oppose Lear after Cordelia’s untimely rebellion and disownment. In The Tempest, Caliban desires to overthrow Prospero for freedom. Similarly, the appropriative offspring also exhibit rebellious “children” challenging authority. In Jane Smiley’s revision of King Lear and Aimé Césaire’s rewriting of The Tempest, defiance renders the children fatherless. In Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Ariel initially disregards her father but ultimately accepts his rule. In Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day, the text itself becomes an orphan as the matriarchy flourishes. Although there appear to be few similarities between these works, the familial dynamic follows a similar formula: the children disobey, but only those who eventually accept the principles of the patriarchy are able to maintain a relationship with their parents; the children who reject the authority become orphans.

Evolving Mediums: Over the Garden Wall and the Divine Comedy

Doughty, Karissa 01 May 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Dante Alighieri’s transcendental work the Divine Comedy is masterfully appropriated in this cartoon mini-series titled Over the Garden Wall in order to explore the issue of suicidal ideation and depression while contradicting Dante. Through different textual and conceptual appropriations, the show invokes the imagery of the Divine Comedy while creating an ending that is the complete opposite of its source text, turning Dante on his head and becoming an anti-Divine Comedy. The different characters of the epic poem are reimagined for these purposes, and the result is a work of art that makes the personal into the universal.

[pt] DE ESPAÇO A LUGAR: UM ESTUDO SOBRE A DIMENSÃO HUMANA E A COESÃO SOCIOESPACIAL DE MADUREIRA / [en] FROM SPACE TO PLACE: A STUDY ON THE HUMAN DIMENSION AND SOCIO-SPATIAL COHESION OF MADUREIRA

KAROLINE AZEREDO DE SOUZA 20 September 2021 (has links)
[en] This research aims to contribute to the investigation of patterns of space appropriation. Aimed at the dynamics between users and the built environment, due to its importance in the process of urban activation and re-signification of spaces. In this work, I expose the discussion on the relationship between memory, appropriation and construction of place, having as a case study the lows of Prefeito Negrão de Lima and Silas de Oliveira viaducts, both in the neighborhood of Madureira. Fruits of the incompatibility between the process of elaboration of mobility projects in the city of Rio de Janeiro and the local dynamics, acting as a fragmenting agent of the space, because at the same time that it has the function of connecting different points in the city, it generates throughout its I walk through countless residual spaces that result in a disintegration of the urban fabric. The objective of this research is to investigate to what extent these appropriate spaces, their physical elements and the activities carried out contribute to the consolidation of space as a representation of a social group, in the articulation and cohesion between the different areas of the surroundings. Issues related to informal activities present in these spaces and the understanding of how such dynamics take place will also be worked on, in order to understand the process of converting a space into Place. The relevance of the research lies in the urban analysis that understands urban space from a more human component and scale and the consequent appropriation of spaces as a strategy during the process of urban activation. In addition, the research aims to elaborate analysis categories based on the case study and use them in Parque Madureira, with the intention of helping in the general understanding of the area, in order to motivate the subversion of other spaces in the city.

Streets | Facades | Rooftops : Motifs of Duality in Lahore and Stockholm / Gator | Fasader | Taktop

Khilji, Shayan Firoz, Chughtai, Zehra Ahsan January 2020 (has links)
Old Lahore holds an ephemeral magic in its experiences, lying in the center of not only the city, but also a key component to all religious, spiritual and everyday activities, which expand beyond the horizontal planes. The vibrance of the old city threads itself into the dense urban fabric through its traditional jharokas (balconies) and intricately woven rooftops, these tendrils extend out to the modernized environment from which its identity is unique and unparalleled. There is continuity in its landscape, where individuals capture the spirit of the city through their resilience and solidarity, in refuge for equal rights to the city. Fabricating people driven urban initiatives, creating assimilation and social harmony in their collaborative bottom up effort for a vibrant public realm. Through the use of drawing, film and design interventions as a tool for understanding and communicating the experience of an environment through conscious place-making is a layer in the learning possibilities found in Lahore, something that Stockholm can learn from. The spread of the city of Stockholm, from the affluent old town, to the radial modernist expanse of its urban fabric mimics that of Lahore. Yet, the traits of Stockholm’s historical lineage and cultural integration illustrate the dichotomy within the cities self-proclaimed slogan. It emphasizes on being a leader in inclusivity with fair and equal opportunities for all, though the fragmented archipelago has still to considerably develop further to achieve a cohesive state. The spatial duality within Stockholm is vast, illustrating the need for the integration of society in the heart of the city, on an individual scale to a place led future through groups, which is crucial for a functional city. Currently the city operates oblivious to the majority of its diverse sects that inhabit it, the invisible in their streets, it cannot be labeled as one city. By increasing the social interplay in the ruptured city, and allowing every individual identity to manifest and help shape the city they live in, Giving further reason for Stockholm taking pride in placing a high value to quality and equality in life. The true urban form of a city is seen through the mobility of its users from all constructs of society as they move through its streets, facades and rooftops in their daily life; thus providing the life, energy and culture to any metropolis. In Essence, Capturing the resilience of the city that is Lahore, and injecting its essence into the modernized pastoral landscape of the Scandinavian capital.
