Escrita subversiva : a pixação paulistana e o campo da arte

Zimovski, Adauany Pieve January 2017 (has links)
This work presents the possibility of opening a debate that highlights the unfolding matters concerning the interaction between the pixação and the field of art. The research seeks to understand how the pixação – through it’s usage of this field structure – can lead to reflections on artistic practices that occur from a variable perspective, perhaps momentary, or even in that interstice zone. This interaction was approached considering three moments: the first one focuses on the 2008 attacks that targeted the Centro Universitário Belas Artes, the Choque Cultural Gallery and the 28th São Paulo Biennial; the second one focuses on the participation of the pixadores Rafael Augustaitiz e Cripta Djan in two biennials (29th São Paulo Biennial and 7th Berlin Biennial); the third one is a reflection reinserted in the urban cultural context of post-2008 pixação. As analytical and reflexive tools, concepts like the aesthetics of the imminence developed by Néstor García Canclini were considered, as well as many notions that are inserted in a discussion about the complex cultural aspects of Latin America. Concepts related to symbolic production within the so-called urban cultures were adopted to deepen the reflection on the social use of urban space, the discursive practices of art as well as the poetic-political discourse of pixação.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the interaction of artists with disabilities in the subfield of social inclusion through art, as well as within the art field itself. The groups that were studied included the Associação dos Pintores com a Boca e com os Pés, Artes Táteis, Grupo de dança sobre rodas Corpo em Movimento, Associação de Balé e Artes para Cegos Fernanda Bianchini, Companhia de Arte Intrusa, Companhia Mix Menestréis, Ceguinhas de Campina Grande and Surdodum. To discuss the functioning of these groups, we considered how people with disability have been viewed in the Western world and in Brazil. We also discussed the conceptions of the participants with disabilities of the groups being studied as persons with disabilities and as artists, as we looked at the various groups' productions. Considering the groups' relations with the media and with the State, we discussed issues of cultural capital and the relations of the participants with disability and the group leaders to Family and School within the artistic-cultural milieu, so as to understand the natures of symbolic division of these social positions. / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes

Stig Johanssons konstkritik 1962/63 samt 1972 : Uppdrag och position / The Art Criticism of Stig Johansson 1962-63 and 1972 : Practice and Position

Nordell, Hanna January 2013 (has links)
This study aims to highlight the art critic Stig Johansson's position during two historical moments: 1962-63 and 1972. The theoretical and methodological framework is mainly derived from Pierre Bourdieu’s understanding of the art field and the art critic's role and mission within that specific field. Art criticism is an important text source for expanded knowledge of how the discussion of contemporary art has been conducted. In the first chapter of the thesis, I describe some of the investments that preceded Johansson’s role as art critic. These efforts are to be regarded as field-specific as they were preparing Johansson with the kind of social capital that won recognition in the art field. In the second part of the essay, I distinguish between the art critical genre and mission. Instead of limiting the study to art reviews, which is usually associated with the genre of art criticism, the thesis also include material such as debate articles and notices. The study of these different text types contribute to an increased understanding of how art criticism practice actually worked, and what was to be included in such practices during these historical periods. The third chapter is based on an empirical study and focus on three selected themes: the new, the political and the art critic role. The fourth part consists of a text analysis based on Malcolm Gee’s strategies for persuasion in art criticism. A presentation and discussion of the art critical material, and hence the position Johansson takes, contributes to an increased understanding of the negotiations that characterized the art field during the periods in question. The thesis contributes to a nuanced perspective on the production of meaning through problematizing positions and values in the Swedish art field during two important historical moments.

Building careers, managing capitals

Flynn, Emma January 2015 (has links)
I sought to find out whether this was a tension between artistic and commercial in the career of visual artists, and if so, how this tension was managed. In attempting to uncover information which could address the research question I undertook in-depth career history interviews with artists which covered their time at art school through to their current practice. The career history method was deliberately chosen in order to address the research question at a tangent as both the literature, and my own personal experience of the field of contemporary visual art, had suggested that the topic of artistic and commercial was a sensitive one. By framing the interviews around the experiences the artists had through the time period of their training and career, I was able to approach the research questions indirectly from the perspective of the artists. Through analysis of the interview transcripts the framework of Bourdieu's capitals arose as one that would capably explain the activities which the artists were undertaken and I used this as a framing device for the empirical chapters in the thesis. In exploring ideas of cultural, social and economic capitals in relation to how artists describe the activities they undertake during their career it became apparent that the broad structures of cultural capital needed further refinement in their application to the careers of visual artists. In the thesis I chose to elaborate further on the concept of artistic capital which has, until now, been unexplored by scholars. I have developed an understanding of artistic capital as a subcategory of cultural capital with particular application to the field of contemporary visual art – with the potential for wider application beyond the thesis. The three capitals of artistic, social and economic proved a capable structure for understanding whether there was a tension between artistic and commercial and how artists managed this. Through this research I have found that artists come to believe, during their early career and training through art school, that there is a tension between artistic and commercial as this is perpetuated by institutions and art world participants through their exclusion or dismissal of commercial aspects of the visual art field. Through their careers they come to realise that this tension is less prevalent than they thought and that they are able to manage these two aspects of artistic and commercial more effectively. However, artists continue to be faced with instances where this tension is imposed upon them by other art world players who perpetuate the belief that there is an inherent, unresolvable tension between artistic and commercial. These individuals attempt to shield artists from this perceived tension later in their careers when artists are already adept at managing the competing priorities of artistic and commercial without the two creating tension.
