However, the literature lacks descriptions of procedures performed in a group of people affected with this disease. Objective: To study the effects of a speech therapy, based on theater games, in the expressiveness of people with PD. Method: to meet this objective were developed three studies. In Study 1 was made theoretical research on vocal and speech found in people with PD and presented considerations on possibilities of using theater games as speech therapy approach for people with PD; in Study 2 was structured a working proposal using theater games as a facilitating mechanism for the rehabilitation of speech expressiveness in people with PD and in Study 3 were observed the effects of speech therapy with theater games in the oral expressiveness subjects with PD, according to the opinion of audiologists future. Conclusion: speech therapy with experience in theater games, developed with four subjects with PD, showed improvement in oral expression of a subject with respect to the category "understandable" when we analyzed the testimony directed the photography show. Considering the "understandable" descriptors, "melodious" and "attractive" for the issue of CAPE-V phrases, improvement was observed in another participant. No entanto a literatura carece de descrições sobre procedimentos realizados em grupo de pessoas acometidas com essa doença. Objetivo: estudar as repercussões de uma intervenção fonoaudiológica, apoiada em jogos teatrais, na expressividade de pessoas com DP. Método: para responder a esse objetivo foram desenvolvidos três estudos. No Estudo 1 foi feito levantamento teórico sobre alterações vocais e de fala encontradas em pessoas com DP e apresentou considerações sobre possibilidades do uso de jogos teatrais como abordagem terapêutica fonoaudiológica para pessoas com DP; no Estudo 2 foi estruturada uma proposta de trabalho utilizando jogos teatrais como mecanismo facilitador para a reabilitação da expressividade de fala em pessoas com DP e no Estudo 3 foram observados os efeitos de intervenção fonoaudiológica com jogos teatrais na expressividade oral sujeitos com DP, de acordo com a opinião de futuros fonoaudiólogos. Conclusão: a intervenção fonoaudiológica com vivência em jogos teatrais, desenvolvida com quatro sujeitos com DP, evidenciou melhora na expressividade oral de um sujeito, com relação à categoria “compreensível”, quando foi analisado o depoimento direcionado pela apresentação de fotografia. Considerando os descritores “compreensível”, “melodiosa” e “atrativa” durante a emissão de frases do CAPE-V, foi observada melhora em outro participante. Previous issue date: 2016-11-04 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The childhood cancer corresponds to a diverse group of diseases whose common element uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal cells, and can occur anywhere in the body. Leukemias are the most common malignancies in childhood. The child is affected in its entirety by the reality of treatment and this is an important moment in its development. the benefits that promotes art therapy are known in the manifestation of psychological activity promoting access to internal content, increasing the well being of the individual and allowing application in diagnostic and therapeutic intervention approach. The aim of this study was that the effects of art therapy on the expression of emotional experiences of children in the treatment of leukemia. The effects studied were the feelings experienced by children with leukemia. We conducted a field survey and the results were treated qualitatively. Participants were four children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, between 5 and 8 years of age, of both sexes, attended an outpatient specialties of a provincial city of São Paulo. The instruments used were: Questionnaire socio-demographic and clinical history script. five sessions of art therapy directed with each child were held. The preparation of the sessions was to develop a technique of psychological research by art therapy, which can be associated with other techniques used in the clinical context and the imagistic content of the productions was analyzed in the light of Jungian psychology. One of the aspects discussed in this research is that expressive activities favored the expression of emotions and feelings of children about their disease process and also other aspects involving their emotional development. In this sense, there was contact between aspects of the conscious and the unconscious. The use of art through the proposed modalities: drawing, collage, painting and modeling made it possible to observe the establishment of emotional bond between her and her work. Some images were recurrent, as referring to polarities, such as life and death, death and rebirth, rain and sun, night and day. These images seem to appear as compensation ahead the imbalance arising from the process of becoming ill, as the regulatory function of the psyche. The making art and think about the production seem to have provided connection to channel the emotions of the participating children. It was noticed also that the sessions possibly helped children to develop their disease process. With regard to images and recurring colors, raise imagine that these are the manifestation of personal content and groups of children. Note that the open space where it ensured the manifestation of content through art was paramount to the imagistic content could be manifested. / O câncer na infância corresponde a um grupo de diversas doenças que tem como elemento comum a proliferação descontrolada de células anormais e podem ocorrer em qualquer parte do organismo. As leucemias são as neoplasias mais comuns na infância. A criança é afetada em sua totalidade pela realidade do tratamento e isso ocorre num momento importante de seu desenvolvimento. São conhecidos os benefícios que a arteterapia promove na manifestação da atividade psicológica como facilitadora de acesso aos conteúdos internos, ampliando o bem-estar do individuo e permitindo a aplicação numa abordagem de intervenção diagnóstica e terapêutica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar quais os efeitos da arteterapia na expressão das vivências emocionais de crianças em tratamento de leucemia. Os efeitos estudados foram os sentimentos vivenciados pelas crianças com leucemia. Realizou-se uma pesquisa de campo e os resultados foram tratados qualitativamente. Participaram da pesquisa quatro crianças diagnosticadas com leucemia linfoide aguda, entre 5 e 8 anos de idade, de ambos os sexos, atendidas num ambulatório de especialidades de uma cidade interiorana de São Paulo. Os instrumentos utilizados foram: Questionário sócio demográfico e Roteiro de anamnese. Foram realizadas cinco sessões dirigidas de arteterapia com cada criança. A elaboração das sessões consistiu no desenvolvimento de uma técnica de investigação psicológica pela arteterapia, que pode ser associada a outras técnicas utilizadas no contexto clínico e o conteúdo imagético das produções foi analisado à luz da psicologia junguiana. Um dos aspectos discutidos nesta pesquisa é que as atividades expressivas favoreceram a expressão de emoções e sentimentos das crianças a respeito do seu processo de adoecimento e ainda de outros aspectos que envolveram seu desenvolvimento emocional. Nesse sentido, observou-se o contato entre aspectos do consciente e do inconsciente. O uso da arte através das modalidades propostas: desenho, colagem, modelagem e pintura fez com que fosse possível observar o estabelecimento de vínculo afetivo entre ela e a sua obra. Algumas imagens foram recorrentes, como as que remetem às polaridades, tais como vida e morte, morte e renascimento, chuva e sol, noite e dia. Essas imagens parecem surgir como compensação diante do desequilibrio advindo do processo de adoecer, como função reguladora da psique. O fazer arte e o pensar sobre a produção parecem ter proporcionado conexão com canais das emoções das crianças participantes. Percebeu-se, ainda, que as sessões possivelmente auxiliaram as crianças a elaborar seu processo de adoecimento. Com relação às imagens e cores recorrentes, suscitam imaginar que se tratam da manifestação de conteúdos pessoais e coletivos das crianças. Vale destacar que o espaço aberto onde se assegurou a manifestação de conteúdos mediante a arte foi primordial para que o conteúdo imagético pudesse ser manifestado

Group art therapy for people with Parkinson's : a qualitative studySchofield, Sally January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores the effects of art-making in group art therapy sessions for people affected by Parkinson's Disease. It examines their experience of self through active engagement with art materials. It also draws on the experience of family caregivers and of professionals providing other therapeutic support for these patients. The research methodology is based on feminist, post-structuralist epistemological thought, situating the research as a political, reality-altering endeavour shaped by, and interpreted through, the researcher's particular ideological lens. The thesis emphasises the importance of developing a critical overview of the research context and considering how dominant discourses have shaped both the individual patient's experience of Parkinson's and the service approach to ways of improving their quality of life. A medical model is viewed as determining a narrow understanding and experience of the condition. Broadening the focus of the work to attend to how Parkinson's is culturally and socially embedded provides new understandings of its effects on patients and their wider needs. The research design has a strong participatory component drawing on the support of a consultancy group of six people affected by Parkinson's and three family caregivers, all seen as experts through their personal experience of the condition. The researcher defines her position as researcher-near using her background as artist, art therapist and her experience of working with people affected by Parkinson's at the research site. The research design is inspired by group art therapy practice, and takes research as praxis for theory building. Social science qualitative interviewing was used with four focus groups, and in ten semi-structured individual interviews which involved participant selected examples of their group therapy artwork. Nine audio-recordings of group art therapy sessions were collected. The researcher used art-making throughout the research process to create visual researcher diaries, and 'response' art as a way of exploring the material gathered for analysis. Besides providing an opportunity to consider the role of visual expression to complement verbal, this English language thesis uses data collected in Spanish and Catalan. Translation across languages (spoken, written and visual) and cultures became a method through which to consider interpretation, explore nuances and question assumptions. The dilemmas faced in translation enhanced researcher reflexivity and facilitated exploration of the space between art and language. This thesis offers an understanding of the potential contribution of group art therapy within six themes: 'Self-construction and discovery'; 'Material action'; 'Aesthetic group movement'; 'New perspectives'; 'Artwork as legacy'; and 'Physical transformation of issues'. These themes support the view that group art therapy acted as a catalyst for well-being and better functioning for participants, and that it can be modelled as a continuous process of embodied enquiry for those affected by Parkinson's. The triangular therapeutic relationship is explored and the terms 'creator' - 'artwork' - 'audience' are proposed to recognise the flexibility in the art-maker's position between creator and audience of their artwork. That artwork is conceptualised as an active meaning generator in the group art therapeutic encounter and the artistic intersubjective matrix is explored in relation to therapeutic factors specific to group art therapy. Implications for working with other related chronic, life changing conditions are elaborated.

Coping-The Art of DepressionGlah, Catherine 01 January 2019 (has links)
This thesis combines personal experiences of depression with experimentation of media, and consists of four projects including a set of five postcards, a graduation robe, and a tapestry collection. The final project, and central focus, is a series of 100 digital images that was created to distract the artist from harmful mental breakdowns. The series is aptly named Coping and has become a study on expressions of the mind.
The exploration of the subconscious through art has roots in psychology and influences from several art movements. Psychologist Sigmund Freud recognized the power of the unconscious mind, and his psycho-analytical discoveries influenced artists in both the Surrealist Automatic and Abstract Expression movements (Turner, pgs. 373-374). Artists such as Andre Masson, Joan Miro, and Jackson Pollock experimented with subconscious thoughts, images and techniques. Additionally, contemporary artists such as Yayoi Kusama reference psychological states of being in their work by using specific denotative elements such as pattern, shape and color.
Even though Coping was not initially created with conscious intention, the work proves that art can be both an insight into the subconscious and a powerful coping mechanism.

INFORMAL ART THERAPY GROUP AMONG MINORITY SENIORS IN INDEPENDENT LIVING COMMUNITIESRodriguez, Jennifer 01 June 2018 (has links)
The elderly population have developed some resistance toward accepting community-based social services. Such resistance could be detrimental to the well-being of low-income seniors by hindering their chance of accessing services intended for them in the first place. Art therapy is seen as a promising intervention against client resistance. This study evaluated the effectiveness of art therapy on reducing resistance to services among low-income seniors living in independent living communities. Through a pre-experimental design, this study analyzed administrative data for a sample of 37 participants from a social service agency in Southern California. Results from two non-parametric tests (WilcoxonSigned-Rank and Mann-Whitney-U) revealed that art therapy is very effective in reducing resistance among seniors. Implications for gerontology and social services providers were discussed.

A Quantitative Assessment of Empathy After an Art Prime with Counseling StudentsColetta, Annette Lisa 01 January 2019 (has links)
Empathy skills are necessary to form therapeutic relationships. Previous research showed that participating in the arts engaged similar neuropathways as those needed to produce empathy. The theoretical framework for this study was art therapy relational neuroscience. The purpose of this pretest, posttest quantitative research study, using the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire, was to examine if a single art session could effectively prime for empathy. Using nonprobability, convenience sampling method, 74 graduate counseling students completed online surveys. Four findings are of note: (a) a t-test showed a significant difference between mean values of pre-post test scores, (b) an independent groups t-test indicated no difference in empathy gain scores as related to gender, (c) a Pearson's correlation indicated that age and art experience were positively correlated to empathy gain scores, (d) a multiple regression indicated that none of the variables examined moderated each other or empathy. Age, and art experience, independently, were found to be positively correlated with empathy scores. The results suggest that the self-conducted art session could enhance empathy. This research is an important contribution to the existing literature and enhances social change by studying a previously underrepresented population and investigating the possible effectiveness of a single art session prime for empathy. Using art to enhance empathy in graduate counseling students may aid with securing graduation, licensure, and therapeutic alliances with future clients.

The focus of this thesis is to investigate the use of art therapy in the treatment of an individual diagnosed with schizophrenia.
In this qualitative narrative single case study, eleven art therapy sessions are described using non-directive spontaneous art making with a 37-year-old man residing in a psychosocial rehabilitation program.
The research study describes this client�s delusional world, and explores the struggle of making sense of his traumatic experiences in early childhood.
The themes that emerge in this exploratory study are many and grief and bereavement are the focus as the client uncovers the connections between the past and the present.
The process of the art therapy sessions and the progression in the imagery from chaos to serenity is described as the client moves from darkness into light, and as we witness his exploration of space in the images of the whirlwind that reappear throughout the sessions.

<p>In this dissertation, a qualitative research project has been conducted focusing on two theatres for persons with intellectual disabilities. The aim of the dissertation was to analyze the ideological tension between artistic practises and the institutional setting in which they are arranged. The aim of the thesis was answered through the following questions:</p><p>What happens when a new and innovative logic is introduced on a well established organisational field?</p><p>How do Rebellerna and Ållateatern translate and manage the institutional setting under which they are working?</p><p>How do Rebellerna and Ållateatern relate to the surrounding environment?</p><p>The analysis is based on a qualitative research project conducted over a period of two years on Ållateatern and six mounts on Rebellerna. Theoretically, the analysis has been inspired by disability theory and neo-institutional theory. In the dissertation I argue that Rebellerna and Ållateatern, in their formal structure, reflect two different logics, which have influenced their relationship with the institutional environment as well as with the actors working at the theatres. These logics have been interpreted as a consequence of the need for human service organizations to obtain legitimacy from the institutional environment. However, on an individual level the tension between an artistic logic and a therapeutic logic has had a social meaning for the actors working at Rebellerna and Ållateatern. It has generated a selfunderstanding which besides the role of a client to the welfare state also includes the role of an actor. These experiences have generated a stronger belief in their own capabilities and a sense of pride. It has also challenged established social meanings on intellectual disabilities. However, one conclusion in the thesis is that both Ållateatern and Rebellerna have had an impact in influence the organisational field of daily activities. Another conclusion is that the tension between therapy and art on an individual level represents an important building block to generate a formation of identity and sub-cultural belonging.</p>

ABSTRACT Based on my experience and research, I believe more educational resources are needed for teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I have combined interviews of participants --two certified and currently practicing art teachers working in the public school setting, two adaptive art specialists, and two art therapists-- with relevant information from my Review of Literature to compile an initial set of practices and adaptive techniques specifically for art teachers to use in constructing a successful learning environment in the art classroom for students with ASD. According to my review of literature, three factors necessary for creating a successful learning environment for students with ASD are preparation, collaboration, and instruction. To examine these factors, I focused my interviews on these topics. Results were aligned with the initial research as those interviewed described a need for more complete and applicable training, more opportunities for collaboration, and information about possible strategies to use with students with ASD in the art classroom. A Journey towards Healing through ArtSgrignoli, Melanie J 11 August 2011 (has links)
This qualitative study sought to answer: How may I, as an artist, use art for my own transformation and healing? I am an artist and teacher living with chronic pain and fatigue and wanted to find healing through art and inspire others to do the same. During the three month study, I made artwork, reflected in my journal, and practiced guided imagery. The journal was used to reflect on my health, the creative process, and to record ideas generated through guided imagery. Findings showed that short term relief was provided during the act of creation, but no long-term relief was achieved. The primary conclusion was that I was able to use art for healing and transformation, but only after experimentation and reflection. By adapting the creative process to accommodate for my illness, I was able to include art making as part of a healthy life.
