Modelling marine vessels engaged in wildlife-viewing behaviour using Automatic Identification Systems (AIS)

Nesdoly, Andrea 20 August 2021 (has links)
Observation of marine animals in their environment – whale-watching – has grown greatly in recent years, bringing risk to the animals. Of particular concern are harmful impacts on marine mammals, some of which are endangered. As a result, regulations have been developed for their protection, but these conservation measures require enforcement across a broad geographic region, which is difficult due to limited monitoring resources. A ship-borne information transmission system called AIS – Automatic Identification System – can provide information-rich marine vessel movement data that can be used to passively monitor vessels engaged in viewing wildlife, aiding regulatory bodies with compliance enforcement. Few studies explore the use of AIS data to determine when vessels are engaged in wildlife-viewing, and as such little guidance exists on how to implement classification models appropriately. The objective of this thesis is to use AIS data to evaluate the accuracy and utility of existing classification models to detect vessels engaged in observing wildlife, and determine whether information about species being observed can be extracted. Using a control set of observed cetacean encounter data, three classification models were statistically assessed. From this, a hidden Markov model was chosen for detailed analysis in the vicinity surrounding Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. The resulting analysis concluded that a hidden Markov unsupervised classification approach was feasible for detecting vessel behaviours and differentiating species type. These findings suggest AIS can aid managers and the commercial whale-watching industry in making informed decisions regarding conservation regulations and their compliance. / Graduate / 2022-08-12

The development of a generic model for choosing a suitable traceability system for use in a manufacturing environment

Riley, Gareth 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Industrial Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / Traceability systems are capable of both tracking and tracing parts. They offer many benefits to an organisation from assisting with recall applications to monitoring the everyday workings of a production line or supply chain. There are numerous methods able to act as traceability systems but only a few can be regarded as automatic and unique identifiers. Automatic traceability of individual entities is the future. It is already widely used by a number of leading companies throughout different business sectors and wide mass adoption is imminent. At present, they are slightly more expensive than the simpler technologies but once mass produced, the cost will come down. To completely understand how traceability systems are implemented, practical experience is required. When starting a traceability project, there are a lot of different options. The different systems offer their own set of advantages and some don’t work in certain environments. It was for this reason that The Decision Making Model was developed to assist users through the difficult initial stages of traceability implementation (i.e. choosing the system most suitable to a particular environment). This model was programmed in Excel and supplies the user with a number of questions regarding the environment the system would work in as well as the user’s requirements. The answers to these questions help the user work through the different types of traceability options to eliminate unsuitable choices. The result is an easy to use program designed with the ability to be upgraded as the technologies evolve.

Detecting Political Framing Shifts and the Adversarial Phrases within\\ Rival Factions and Ranking Temporal Snapshot Contents in Social Media

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Social Computing is an area of computer science concerned with dynamics of communities and cultures, created through computer-mediated social interaction. Various social media platforms, such as social network services and microblogging, enable users to come together and create social movements expressing their opinions on diverse sets of issues, events, complaints, grievances, and goals. Methods for monitoring and summarizing these types of sociopolitical trends, its leaders and followers, messages, and dynamics are needed. In this dissertation, a framework comprising of community and content-based computational methods is presented to provide insights for multilingual and noisy political social media content. First, a model is developed to predict the emergence of viral hashtag breakouts, using network features. Next, another model is developed to detect and compare individual and organizational accounts, by using a set of domain and language-independent features. The third model exposes contentious issues, driving reactionary dynamics between opposing camps. The fourth model develops community detection and visualization methods to reveal underlying dynamics and key messages that drive dynamics. The final model presents a use case methodology for detecting and monitoring foreign influence, wherein a state actor and news media under its control attempt to shift public opinion by framing information to support multiple adversarial narratives that facilitate their goals. In each case, a discussion of novel aspects and contributions of the models is presented, as well as quantitative and qualitative evaluations. An analysis of multiple conflict situations will be conducted, covering areas in the UK, Bangladesh, Libya and the Ukraine where adversarial framing lead to polarization, declines in social cohesion, social unrest, and even civil wars (e.g., Libya and the Ukraine). / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Computer Science 2018

No. of bitstreams: 1 CamilaRC.pdf: 3632183 bytes, checksum: 9261ead3efb5036a43a01c80ef0da51a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-11-25 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / Spatial-temporal dynamics of zooplankton in the Caravelas river estuary (Bahia, Brazil). The survey was conducted in order to describe the zooplankton community of the estuary Caravelas (Bahia, Brazil), to quantify and relate the patterns of horizontal and vertical transport with the type of tide (neap and spring) and tidal phase (flood and ebb). Zooplankton samples were collected with the aid of a suction pump (300L), filtered in plankton nets (300μm) and fixed in saline formalin 4%. Samples were collected at a fixed point (A1), near the mouth of the estuary, with samples taken at neap tides and spring tides during the dry and rainy seasons. Samples were collected for 13 hours, at intervals of 1 hour in 3 depths: surface, middle and bottom. Simultaneous collection of biological, we measured the current velocity, temperature and salinity of the water through CTD. In the laboratory, samples were selected for analysis in estereomicroscope, with 25 groups identified, with Copepoda getting the highest number of species. The 168 samples obtained from temporal samples were subsampled and processed on equipment ZooScan, with the aid of software ZooProcess at the end were generated 458.997 vingnettes. 8 taxa were identified automatically, with 16 classified as a semi-automatic. The group Copepoda, despite the limited taxonomic refinement ZooScan, obtained 2 genera and 1 species identified automatically. Among the seasons dry and wet groups Brachyura (zoea), Chaetognatha, and the Calanoid copepods (others), Temora spp., Oithona spp. and Euterpina acutifrons were those who had higher frequency of occurrence, appearing in more than 70% of the samples. Copepoda group showed the largest percentage of relative abundance in both seasons. There was no seasonal variation of total zooplankton, with an average density of 7826?4219 org.m-3 in the dry season, and 7959?3675 org.m-3 in the rainy season, neither between the types and phases of the tides, but seasonal differences were significant recorded for the main zooplankton groups. Vertical stratification was seen for the major zooplankton groups (Brachyura, Chaetognatha, Calanoida (other), Oithona spp, Temora spp. e Euterpina acutifrons). The scale of this stratification varied with the type (square or tide) and tidal phase (flood or ebb). The instantaneous transport was more influenced by current velocity, with higher values observed in spring tides to the total zooplankton, however, there was a variation of this pattern depending on the zooplankton group. According to the data import and export of total zooplankton, the outflow of organisms of the estuary was higher than the input. The results suggest that the estuary of Caravelas may influence the dynamics of organic matter to the adjacent coast, with possible consequences in National Marine Park of Abrolhos / Din?mica espacial e temporal do zoopl?ncton no estu?rio do rio Caravelas (Bahia, Brasil). O grupo Copepoda, apesar do refinamento taxon?mico limitado do ZooScan, obteve 2 g?neros e 1 esp?cie identificada de maneira autom?tica.

AIS i havets och tankens strömmar : En etnografisk studie av nautikers användning av transpondersystemet AIS / AIS in The Currents of Sea and Thought : An ethnographic study of mariners'use of the Automatic Identification System

Blomberg, Olle January 2004 (has links)
An ethnographic study loosely informed by the theoretical framework of distributed cognition was carried out in order to describe how mariners have adopted the Automatic Identification System (AIS) in their work practice, or"made the technology their own". AIS is a transponder-based identification and communication system that allows ships to automatically identify and track each other. In addition to facilitating the identification and tracking of ships, objectives behind the introduction of AIS are to"simplify informational exchange", and"provide additional information to assist situation awareness". Participant observation and interviews were made at four different ships, as well as at two shore stations. A focus group was also held at a maritime conference. The study gave some interesting results. For example, a Problem of Public Information Loss was identified. It is tentatively suggested that this problem has been overlooked partly because of a widespread but impoverished model of communication which does not account for the role of side-participants in a conversation. It is concluded that more research needs to be done on maritime work and the use of new bridge technology.

IPC產業供應商之海外發展與挑戰 -以個案公司進入日本市場為例 / IPC supplier’s foreign entry and challenge - A study of a case company

Chang, Hsiao Ching Unknown Date (has links)
This study aims to explore the case story of a U.S. based company in automatic identification industry, which has a manufacture plant and sales team in Taiwan. The study is done by a case study method, to analyze the case company’s foreign market entry strategy, and how the decision is made to choose Japan as the target market as well as which entry strategy is performed. Porter’s Five Force Model is used in the analysis to determine the case company’s competitive power in Japan market. In addition, by setting up distribution system, the costs including cost of utility, information research, moral hazard, and asset specify to the end customer in dealing with case company has been influenced dynamically. And based on the result and observation of the study, then suggestions will be provided to the case company as conclusion. Findings of the study are that the decision on how to enter Japan market is made by considering the overall all risks and transaction costs among several entry modes. Then the distribution system is implemented, and a good market position along with the market trend helped the case company find customers with right scale in niche market, and it is evident that the distribution system did lower down the 4 kind of costs to the end customer in general, and the overall market revenue increased in Japan as return. In conclusion, three suggestions are made to the case company: 1. Involve with distributor and increase the interfaces with the end customers to strengthen the case company and distributor’s credibility and also the confidence of end customer. 2. Tighten the cooperation with distributor by increasing distributor’s cost of specify to ensure the continuous partnership. 3. To keep the option of direct managing Japanese account in the near future in case of the distribution partnership cannot be continued.

Implementation av binary messages i AIS och användargränssnitt för egendefinierade meddelanden / Implementation of binary messages in AIS and user interface for user-defined messages

Makkonen, Jimmy, Segelström, Matthias January 2016 (has links)

Mezinárodní porovnání logistiky knihoven / International comparison of library logistics

Zubíková, Michaela January 2012 (has links)
This master thesis deals with the untraditional application domain of logistics in libraries which is demonstrated with the help of concrete examples of libraries from the Czech Republic, Finland and Australia. The main goal of the thesis is to compare the library logistics of the City Library of Hradec Králové, the Municipal Library of Prague and the Turku City Library with the focus on the equipment and logistics technologies used, especially storage technologies and technologies for automatic identification. The most sophisticated technologies used in libraries are demonstrated using the example of the Australian Macquarie University Library and the project Eye over Prague. A classification of libraries according to their size in terms of the number of library items and the number of loans is created in the thesis and the appropriate library logistics solutions are then assigned to the particular classification groups.
