Purchasing practice in SMEs : Practical impressions about the purchasing activities of small and medium sized enterprises in the manufacturing industry

Kulik, Stephanie January 2010 (has links)
<p>Small and medium sized companies are important to the European economy and considered as the true backbone of the European economy, being primarily responsi-ble for wealth and economic growth. Further, the purchasing function of small and medium sized companies had become more and more important to firms within the creating of competitive advantages. Additional, former research emphasizes the need of companies to engage in closer relationships in order to survive in nowadays business environments.</p><p>These three issues, - SMEs, its purchasing performance and the relationships the small and medium sized firms are engaged with are interrelated and therefore the essences of the thesis. The thesis is limited to the manufacturing industry due to the potential wide area of small and medium sized companies.</p><p>The purpose of the thesis is to examine the purchasing practices of small and me-dium sized enterprises with a focus on strategic considerations and supplier relation-ships.</p><p>The research project is developed with four single case studies. Participating companies were two small sized manufacturing companies and two medium sized manufac-turing companies, defined according to the definition of the European Commission.</p><p>The study is built on a critical review of former literature and research findings within the purchasing area and the area of small and medium sized companies. The find-ings from literature review (frame of references) and the findings from the empirical study were connected in order to fulfill the purpose of the thesis as well as the developed research questions.</p><p>In the analysis, the characteristics of SMEs purchasing process were outlined. Evi-dence for strategic consideration were found and the characteristics of the companies relationships where established.</p><p>Small and medium sized enterprises have developed its purchasing performance po-sitively in the comparison to former research findings. By using business technology systems, strategic planning and deliberations and finally through building close and long-term relationships, manufacturing SMEs found a suitable ways to perform its purchasing activities successful and found its place in sophisticated supply chains.</p>

How a purchasing process can be automated and its effects on the supplier relationship

Strandberg, Diana, Larsson, Thorbjörn January 2006 (has links)
How to develop the buyer-supplier relationship management : An investigation of the Swedish furniture industry

Hermansson, Adam, Lindelöf, Axel January 2015 (has links)
During the last decades, the competition changed from taking place between individual companies to take place between supply chains. As a natural consequence, the importance of buyer-supplier relationships (BSRs) increased since both actors need to work together (Dyer &amp; Singh, 1998; Kannan &amp; Choon Tan, 2006). During a seminar provided by the Swedish trade and employers’ association Trä- och Möbelföretagen (TMF), companies within the Swedish furniture industry revealed the BSR management to be deficient from time to time, where price focus has increased from the producer side. Whereas the suppliers stressed the disinterest to compete on price, the authors formulated the purpose of this thesis as: To investigate how the furniture industry can further develop the management of BSRs for the benefit of both producers and suppliers within the industry segment. To fulfill the purpose, the authors have conducted an observation, interviews and distributed a survey to both producers and suppliers of the studied industry segment, design- and office furniture. The aim was to holistically understand how the BSRs are currently managed, and from the current state provide improvement suggestions. The analysis of the collected data highlights that the problems perceived by the companies are not as wide-ranging as first indicated, but there are rather small-scale changes that need to be done in order to improve the BSR management. The suggested improvements that need to be considered were drafted from earlier theories and merged into a single BSR framework. However, a BSR development model, suggesting that the furniture industry could beneficially manage the BSRs more strategically, also accompanies the BSR framework. The authors conclude that in order for companies to manage BSRs more strategically, the main focus needs to shift from price towards flexibility, long-term commitment and co-development. Only by shifting focus from transactional BSRs towards collaborative BSRs, the authors argue the furniture industry can realize the domestic BSRs’ full potential.

Why Are You Really Winning and Losing Deals: A Customer Perspective on Determinants of Sales Failure

Friend, Scott B 13 May 2010 (has links)
Understanding the determinants of sales success and sales failure has organization wide implications, ranging from an improved salesforce to improved corporate performance. However, a paucity of research on sales failure has resulted in an under-conceptualized field largely built on assumptions. This research proposes to overcome salesforce failure attribution biases by collecting data from the industrial buyer’s perspective. Thirty five post-mortem interviews with procurement decision makers from buying organizations were collected following a failed sales proposal. The context of these failed sales proposals was for multi-year industrial service key account contracts (>$5 Million). The result of this naturalistic inquiry is a model which outlines the determinant attributes of sales failure: price, adaptability and relationship-potential. An experimental design was conducted following this exploratory research in order to test the derived drivers of sales failure and success, as well as provide a trade-off analysis of the three emergent sales proposal themes. Results indicate that a lack of adaptability has the strongest impact on the sales failure outcome variable, as well as buyer characteristics have a potentially moderating impact on the relative trade-off weights between price/adaptability and price/relationship-potential.

Att se in i framtiden : En studie om hur konceptet insiktsförsäljning påverkar ett B2B-företags försäljningsprocess

Marković, Daniel, Andersson, Oskar January 2014 (has links)
Background: The result of our interactive information society is that sales business has shifted from a tactical to a strategical focus, thus companies have had to adapt to this change. The evolution of sales shows that companies have gone from one static model to another, which is discarded by the new concept ‘insight selling’ claiming that it through insights is possible to be forceful in the, these days, rough sales climate. Purpose: The purpose of the report is to form an understanding of how insight sales affect a sales process. Research question: How does insight selling affect the B2B sales process? Methodology: Process mapping through interviews in combination with organizational documents. Findings: Insight selling affects the sales process by a clearer research mindset and a change in communication in relation to the customer.

The buying behaviour of farmers in the Eastern Free State when purchasing wire products / du Plessis O.

Du Plessis, Ockert Johannes January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to assist wire companies to identify buying behaviour amongst consumers of their products. For the purpose of this study the product will be wire products and the specific target market will be farmers in the Eastern Free State. The primary objective of the study is to identify factors that play a role in the buying behaviour of farmers in the Eastern Free State when purchasing wire products. By knowing exactly the buying criteria of wire products amongst farmers and seasonable cycles of purchasing will form the basis of strategic marketing planning. This study was conducted in two phases. Phase one consisted of a literature review and phase two of an empirical research. The empirical research consisted of a quantitative research design; more specifically, descriptive research that employed cross–sectional analysis of the quantitative data collected from a sample by means of a structured questionnaire. The results show that 76% of the respondents are older than 41 years of age. The population for this study is, therefore, a more matured one. Regarding their buying behaviour, the purchase frequency shows that the majority purchase wire products on a monthly basis and 40% on an annual basis. Most of them (78%) purchase their wire products from the co–operative. Wire products are an integral part of farming activities and in general the respondents are very positive about the industry. Most important considerations identified are that the wire industry should keep in touch with its market, never be out of orders, keep up the fast service that is currently provided, and that reputable products should be kept in stock. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

社會網路、買賣、與中介 / The Buyer-Seller-Intermediary Network

許修懷 Unknown Date (has links)
In buyer-seller network, on empirical premise, each buyer and seller must have a relationship, that is "link," to exchange a good. Each buyer should choose whether to link or not and choose how many links he or she should have. In this paper, we introduce an intermediary in the buyer-seller network. Buyers can construct links by themselves, or they can exchange through an intermediary. On the other hand, the intermediary also charges an entrance fee for its service. We then discuss the intermediaries' behavior and define the allocation rule. We find the intermediary allocation rule achieves maximal profit for the intermediary but this rule cannot reach the maximal total surplus. We also characterize the relationship between link cost, buyers' valuation, the optimal number of links, and the payoff of the buyer and intermediary.

Airline passengers' online search and purchase behaviors

Lee, Misuk 06 July 2009 (has links)
This paper studies airline customers' online search and purchase behaviors. Two fundamental aspects of online behavior are examined: (1) the link between search behavior and buying behavior and (2) the evolution of inter-temporal search and purchase decisions of strategic buyers. In the first study, we examine online customers' dynamic conversion behaviors using clickstream data. A new model based on Markov chains that incorporates discrete choices and decision-timing is proposed to capture key search effects on consumer decisions as well as dynamics of browsing behavior both within and across visits. Empirical results show that within-site search activities lead to strong consumer engagement and thus increase purchase and revisit propensities. Fit comparison between first and second order Markov chains allows us to conclude that consumer decisions are primarily influenced by the current search. Furthermore, we observe that consumers dynamically adjust their browsing behavior both within and across visits. The second study investigates the evolution of inter-temporal search and purchase decisions of strategic buyers. Risk neutral buyers follow simple behavioral rules based on future and current prices and options available. We show that the trade-off between waiting and purchasing will become less and less favorable to waiting. Price elasticity should therefore drop as departure date approaches. With stationary price distributions, search and purchase efforts increase with proximity to the deadline. We extend the base model to allow for price evolution and demand uncertainty. We find that increases in mean price and price dispersion may attenuate increasing propensities for search and purchase. We demonstrate our models through a logit estimation on a unique data set from a major online travel agency.
