Ungdomsromanens liv : En komparativ undersökning av tilltal i fyra samtida ungdomsromanerEriksson, Evelina January 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyse the narrative address of four contemporary novels for young adults: Grim (2021) by Sara Bergmark Elfgren, Fula tjejer (2020) by Johanna Lindbäck, Lisa Bjärbo och Sara Ohlsson, Bergtagen (2020) by Camilla Sten, and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (2019) by Holly Jackson. The method and main theory are based on Barbara Wall’s The Narrator’s Voice: The Dilemma of Children’s Fiction from 1991 and her use of narratological concepts of narrative perspective to determine if a book is written for children. The analysis shows how the four novels use unique and different approaches to address their implied young readers. The implied author can sometimes be shown through the narrator’s voice, depending on which narrative perspective the novels have. In the end, however, it is difficult to try to define the genre of young adult fiction in the same way that Wall defines the genre of children’s fiction. I argue that one would need to consider the unique conditions of young adult literature and its readers to try to define the genre even clearer.

The Ties that Bind : Breaking the Bonds of Victimization in the Novels of Barbara Pym, Fay Weldon and Margaret AtwoodRathburn, Fran M. (Frances Margaret), 1948- 12 1900 (has links)
In this study of several novels each by Barbara Pym, Fay Weldon, and Margaret Atwood, I focus on two areas: the ways in which female protagonists break out of their victimization by individuals, by institutions, and by cultural tradition, and the ways in which each author uses a structural pattern in her novels to propel her characters to solve their dilemmas to the best of their abilities and according to each woman's personality and strengths.

An Analysis of Richard M. Weaver's Philosophy and Methodology as Applied to Two of Barbara Jordan's SpeechesHouse, Robert G., fl. 1979- 08 1900 (has links)
This rhetorical thesis analyzes Richard M. Weaver's theories of rhetoric and his methodology for ranking argument types according to their perceived ethicality. Two keynote speeches by former U. S. Representative Barbara Jordan have been subjected to the Weaverian analysis. Ms. Jordan's argument types are characteristic of what Weaver considered ethical oratory. Weaver's axiological judgments and his dogmatic ranking of the hierarchy have generated some criticism from rhetorical scholars. Although this criticism is justified, Weaver's philosophy and methodology provide insight to a given's orator's philosophical perspective. The Weaverian analysis contributes to the understanding of not only the superficial aspects of an address, but also the underlying and sometimes hidden motivations of an orator.

Design: modos de [des]uso. Aproximações contemporâneas entre arte e design / Design: ways to [mis] use. Contemporary relationships between art and designMarilia Solfa 09 February 2017 (has links)
This thesis proposes a study on the renewed interest of contemporary art in rescuing and re-shaping the modern discussion regarding the relationship between art and design. This approach differs from the previous modernist proposal, as it responds to the singular cultural, social and economic context in which it is developed. Therefore, our aim is to characterize and understand both this new context and the main issues concerning this rapprochement between art and design by analysing the production of four important artists in the contemporary scene: Vito Acconci (1940), Barbara Bloom (1951) Andrea Zittel (1965) and Ana Maria Tavares (1958). This research addresses the tactics of artistic intervention within the design discourse field which, in the society governed by advanced capitalism, constitutes one of the main systems of production and consumption of images, signs, objects, environments and individual and collective identities. By going through a process of expansion and diffusion, spreading and infiltrating into various spheres of everyday life, the field of design becomes a starting point for the production of artists who, through disruptive action tactics, seek opportunities, even if temporary, to intervene in a world increasingly designed and planned to the very last detail

Organic phosphorus in marine sediments : chemical structure, diagenetic alteration, and mechanisms of preservationLaarkamp, Kirsten Lynn January 2000 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Joint Program in Oceanography (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), 2000. / Vita. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 266-286). / Phosphorus, an essential nutrient, is removed from the oceans only through burial with marine sediments. Organic phosphorus (Prog) constitutes an important fraction (ca. 25%) of total-P in marine sediments. However, given the inherent lability of primary Prog biochemicals, it is a puzzle that any Porg is preserved in marine sediments. The goal of this thesis was to address this apparent paradox by linking bulk and molecular-level Porg information. A newly-developed sequential extraction method, which isolates sedimentary Pol reservoirs based on solubility, was used in concert with Prog nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-NMR) to quantify Prog functional group concentrations. The coupled extraction/ 31P-NMR method was applied to three sediment cores from the Santa Barbara Basin, and the first-ever high-resolution depth profiles of molecular-level Porg distribution during diagenesis were generated. These depth profiles were used to consider regulation of Prog distribution by biomass abundance, chemical structure, and physical protection mechanisms. Biomass cannot account for more than a few percent of sedimentary Prog. No evidence for direct structural control on remineralization of Porg was found. Instead, sorptive protection appears to be an important mechanism for Prog preservation, and structure may act as a secondary control due to preferential sorption of specific Porg compound classes. / by Kirsten Lynn Laarkamp. / Ph.D.

Wayfinding with ambiguous instructions in unfamiliar environmentsJohansson, Christian, Sundberg, Emma January 2018 (has links)
The present study aims to predict which individual factors may influence strategy-choices in wayfinding situations, specifically when participants are faced with ambiguous instructions in unfamiliar environments. Individual differences were measured with self-report forms of the Big Five personality traits and the Santa Barbara sense of direction scale (SBSOD). The study was conducted in a web-based survey format with a n=104 (65 female, and 39 male). A regression analysis concluded that the trait conscientiousness was the only factor that had predictive value in determining choice of strategy. SBSOD had some predictive values towards strategy-choice, but needs further investigation before any general conclusion can be drawn. Future studies should focus on a more goal-oriented task with more realistic stimulus.

My Faith in the Constitution is Whole: Barbara Jordan Signifies on ScripturesOwens, Robin L 01 January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation is a critical investigation of the engagements of scriptures in the life and speeches of U.S. Congresswoman Barbara C. Jordan (1936–1996). I engage in a research methodology that utilizes critical historical, auto/biographical, literary, and rhetorical analyses. My research agenda is to explain how scriptures work and are used by Barbara Jordan to illustrate an example of a larger phenomenon of scripturalizing and scripturalization outside of the context of institutional religion. In order to give a fuller context to Barbara Jordan’s rhetorical strategies, as an African American woman, I first consider the lives, speeches and use of scriptures of formidable 19th century African American women orators and political activists, Maria W. Stewart and Anna Julia Cooper, who serve as functional equivalents or precursors to Barbara Jordan. In this study, I found that Barbara Jordan makes American scripture, i.e. the Constitution, function in her speeches as a central component in a discursive rhetorical strategy of indirection, which I refer to as signifying on scriptures. She uses the Constitution, along with her personal history as an African American woman, to pretend mere sociopolitical conviction about social injustice. However, at the same time, she is strategic and intends to promote advocacy for racial justice and gender equality. Jordan uses the Constitution to signify on scriptures in a similar manner to how Maria W. Stewart and Anna Julia Cooper use Christian scriptures, i.e. the Bible, in their speeches to negotiate social and political power.
