Effects of maturity and seed size on seed vigor and plant growth in snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Herat, Lakshman Gamini 14 October 2005 (has links)
Stage of maturity at harvest and relative seed size can affect seed vigor. Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to determine the effect of seed maturity on seed vigor, storability, and subsequent plant growth of four cultivars of snap bean (Topcrop, Provider Black, Provider White, and Cherokee Wax). Seeds harvested between physiological maturity (PM) and harvest maturity (HM) showed the highest seed vigor and storability. At PM, seed moisture content was about 55%. A drop in seed fresh weight and a pod color change from green to yellow appear to signal the stage of PM. Delaying harvest past HM reduced seed vigor. The three cultivars with colored seed coats showed higher seed vigor than Provider White. Climatic and weathering effects on maturity, vigor, and yield of Topcrop and Cherokee Wax seed were evaluated at three locations (L-I, L-2, and L-3) in Sri Lanka having different agro-climatic conditions. Seeds that developed and matured under cooler conditions (L-l) produced higher yields and had larger size, better color, and higher vigor. Seeds developed and matured faster under warmer conditions (L-3); however, seed vigor and yields were lower and seed vigor dropped prior to HM. Cherokee Wax was the most tolerant to field weathering. Seeds of Topcrop and Cherokee Wax were separated by weight into three seed sizes (small, medium, and large) and evaluated for crop performance in two plantings (12/90 and 3/91). Field emergence was higher from larger seeds in the second planting, where the soil conditions were more stressful. Seedlings and plants at the flowering stage were larger and pod yields higher from larger seeds. The cultivar x seed size interaction was significant for pod yield per plant. Topcrop showed no differences, while with Cherokee Wax, pod yield per plant increased with increase in seed size during both plantings. Seeds produced from small seeds were similar or higher in vigor, indicating that small seeds could be used for seed production purposes. The data from these experiments indicate that vigor in snap bean seeds can be optimized by harvesting at an early stage after PM and by grading to remove small seeds. / Ph. D.

The adequacy of recommended microwave blanch times for carrots and green beans in selected microwave ovens

Young, Rebecca Lynn January 1982 (has links)
Microwave Blanching instructions for a variety of vegetables have recently been published by several sources. More research is needed, however, to establish microwave blanching times that are sufficient to destroy enzymes which cause nutritional and sensory deterioration in frozen vegetables while maintaining optimal quality. In the present study the General Electric Company's recommended blanch times for carrots and green beans were investigated using three microwave ovens. Peroxidase was used as an indicator enzyme for measuring blanching adequacy. It was determined that oven variation had no significant effect on percent residual peroxidase activity in either vegetable (p > 0.05). A large degree of standard deviation in the percent residual peroxidase activity was found among the blanched portions of vegetable. This variation was attributed to the inconsistent levels of peroxidase enzyme in the vegetables themselves. Blanch time had the most significant impact on percent residual peroxidase activity (p < 0.01). After a four-minute blanch, carrots retained approximately 21-25% peroxidase activity and green beans retained approximately 37-46% peroxidase activity. These ranges are much higher than the acceptable level of 5% residual peroxidase activity. Six minutes of blanching for green beans and five minutes of blanching for carrots were required to reduce residual peroxidase activity to acceptable levels. Vegetables with such low peroxidase activity show no deleterious enzyme related changes during frozen storage. Microwave blanching has the potential to be an acceptable alternative to hot water blanching, but further research is needed to optimize microwave blanching procedures. / Master of Science

Symphony: A Java-based Composition and Manipulation Framework for Distributed Legacy Resources

Shah, Ashish Bimalkumar II 08 April 1998 (has links)
A problem solving environment (PSE) provides all computational facilities necessary for solving a target class of problems efficiently. PSEs are used primarily for domain-specific problem-solving in science and engineering and aim to ease the burden of advanced scientific computing. Scientific problem solving, however, often involves the use of legacy resources which are difficult to modify or port, and may be distributed on different machines. Existing PSEs provide little support for solving such problems in a generic framework. This thesis investigates the design of a platform-independent system that enables problem solving using legacy resources without having to modify legacy code. It presents Symphony, an open and extensible Java-based framework for composition and manipulation of distributed legacy resources. Symphony allows users to compose visually a collection of programs and data by specifying data-flow relationships among them and provides a client/server framework for transparently executing the composed application. Additionally, the framework is web-aware and helps integrate web-based resources with legacy resources. It also enables programmers to provide a graphical interface to legacy applications and to write visualization components. Symphony uses Sun Microsystems' JavaBeans component architecture for providing components that represent legacy resources. These components can be customized and composed in any standard JavaBeans builder tool. Executable components communicate with a server, implemented using Java Remote Method Invocation mechanism, for executing remote legacy applications. Symphony enables extensibility by providing abstract components which can be extended by implementing simple interfaces. Beans implemented from the abstract beans can act as data producers, consumers or filters. / Master of Science

This fact has taken an irrational use of fungicides, with the increase of the cost of production and threat to the environment. The objective of this work was compared criteria for the decision of the fungicide application to control anthracnose, angular leaf spot and rust of the common bean. The experiments was carry out in a commercial field in Vacaria/RS, during the growing season of 2005, under no-till system and crop rotation, with plots the 3 x 5 m, in a randomized block design with four replications Three cultivars were evaluated, using two fungicides per cultivar: BRS Campeiro (triphenyltin hydroxide and azoxystrobin + cyproconazol), IPR Uirapuru (tiophanate methyl + chlorothalonil and tetraconazol) and BRS Valente (tryfloxystrobin + propiconazol and tebuconazol). The criteria for the fungicide application was: fixed calendar (FC), growth stage (GS) and threshold (LDE) of 10 % and 20 % of disease incidence. Weekly evaluation was carry out for disease incidence and severity of 20 trifoliolate leves at first trifoliolate leaf until physiological maturation. The values of disease incidence and severity were submitted to area under disease progress curve (AUDPC).The central plants of a square meter in each parcels were used to yield calculation and grain pathology. An economic analysis was carry through on the basis of the costs of the six fungicides, the kneading of three types of sprayer (mounted, towed and Uniport model) and the fixed and changeable costs of the tractor. The data of the AUDPC, yield, mass of thousand grains and seed´s pathology were submitted to analysis of variance and the averages compared by Tukey test at 5% of probability. In the FC and the GS criteria, three applications of fungicides were used, being the two first application with the fungicides to anthracnose and angular leaf spot disease and the last one to rust. For the LDE 10 % and LDE 20 % criteria it was only one application to control the rust disease. Due to seeds sanity by crop rotation and to the irregularity of pluvial precipitations, it was not detected anthracnose and angular leaf spot at none time of evaluation. Amongst the fungi diseases, the rust was detected only after the fourth evaluation. The data of the AUDPC for rust disease in the three cultivars was low. The cultivar IPR Uirapuru it was more susceptible to the rust disease, while the BRS Campeiro more tolerant. Significant differences was not detected in the grains yield and the mass of a thousand grains between treatments and cultivars. Colletotrichum lindemunthianum and Phaeisariopsis griseola was not detected in the grains, indicating the grains sanity was a consequence of plants health during the growth season. The yield of BRS Campeiro cultivar (67 kg or R$ 78,15), has not covered by the cost of the fungicide applications. Instead, in the IPU Uirapuru cultivar, with high economic production (124 kg or R$ 144,66), the cost of the fungicide applications to disease control it was covered by one application only in determinate cases, considering the types of fungicides e sprayers. It was concluded that preventive applications in F.C. and G.S. are unnecessary when the source of primary inoculum of anthracnose and angular leaf spot will be eliminated and the intensity the rust will be low / As indicações para o início da aplicação de fungicidas no feijoeiro comum são escassas e pouco precisas, seguindo diferentes critérios, como: estádios fenológicos, programa fixo de calendário, informações sobre condições climáticas, densidade de inóculo na área e intensidade da doença na planta.

Movimentação e disponibilidade de boro para p feijoeiro cultivado em colunas de solo / Movement and availability of boron for common-beans plants grown in soil columns

Faria, Leonardo Campos 03 May 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-26T13:53:36Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 resumo.pdf: 1040999 bytes, checksum: d34325ed5a042eeb0a9a2ede4de1234f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-05-03 / Boron deficiency is common in Brazilian soils and may be a limiting factor for crop productivity, especially in dicotyledon species which are more demanding in this micronutrient. Tropical soils, generally, have the organic matter fraction as the main source of B, therefore, low organic matter content in that soils make them more prone to the occurrence of B deflciency to crops. The soil analysis for B availability is an important step to establish adequate techniques for correction of its deficiency which, along with the adequate supply of alI nutrients, is crucial for gains in crop productivity. Soil B availabilty is dependent on the reactions of B adsorption to soil which controls its concentration in the soil solution, where the amount available for plant absorption is present. These relationships are important for the correction of deficiencies and for preventing toxicities of B in the soil-crop system and the balance between the soil adsorbed B and the B in soil solution is important in order to have adequate supply to plants with preservation of the quality of the soil-plant-water system it has to be pointed out that in the natural soil pH range most of B is in form of molecular H3BO3, which has high mobility in the soil profile, being easily lixiviated, mainly in sandy soils. This work aimed to evaluate the response of common-beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Majestoso) to addition of B in two soils with different texture, by using crescent doses of B from two sources, with and without addition of organic matter, making the relationship between the doses added to the soil and the soil B concentrations at different depths. The experiment was set as a factorial 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 [2 soils (sandy and clayey); two sources of B (boric acid and ulexite); with and without addition of organic material; and 5 doses of B (0.0, O.5, 1.5. 3.0 and 6.0 mgldm3)], in a completely randomized block design with three replications. The experimental unity was a 15 cm (diameter) by 42 cm (high) PVC tube filled with the soil sample, containg two common-bean seedlings. ln the floweríng stage, it was collected samples from the leaf tíssues for mineral analysis. After dry digestion of the vegetal samples B was determined by colorímetry with azomethine-H. Begining at the flowering stage, it was counted the number of flowers per plant. All plants cut at the physiologícal maturity stage, oven-dried at 65°C untill constant weight and the weight of the dry matter was recorded. Before plants cutting, the pods were collected and the number of pods per plant recorded. At the end of the experiment, it was collected a soil sample from each depth (2-7, 7-12, 12-22, 22-42 cm), and avaible B was determined to evaluate ist movement through the soil profile. The B concentration in Ieaves increased with the increase of the B doses applied to soil (linear and quadratic responses) independently of the soiI type, B source, or organic matter addition. These results are in accordance with the increase of B recovered from soil by the extractors HCl 50 mmol/L and hot CaCl2 5 mmol/L. The values of the linear correlation coefficients between B content in leaves and B recovered by the extractors from soil corroborate the observed toxicity symptoms in the plants at the higher B doses. In generaL the increase in the B dose added to soil, resulted in higher concentrations of available B extracted with hot CaCl2 5 mmol/L in the different depths, indicating the B mobility through the soiI profile. These values were Iower in the clayey soil due to the higher interaction between B and the surface charges of the clay fraction.

Caracterização fisio-molecular de cultivares de feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) em resposta à deficiência hídrica / Physiological and molecular characterization of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in response to drought

Dipp, Cristiane Conterno 30 May 2016 (has links)
The identification of genotypes for drought tolerance has a great importance in breeding programs. The aim of this study was to characterize genotypes of beans in response to drought tolerance in different reproductive stages through physiologic, agronomic and molecular analysis. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse, using a randomized block design with four replicates; 10 cultivars: ANFC 9, ANFP 110, BRS Esplendor, BRSMG Realce, IPR Siriri, IPR Tangará, IPR Tuiuiu, IPR Uirapuru, IAC Imperador and IAC Milênio under two conditions of irrigation: plants irrigated during their entire life cycle, and plants under irrigation suppression in the reproductive stage (R7) until 16% of field capacity, when the irrigation was restored. In the last four days of stress, the gas exchanges were analyzed, and in the last day of stress was analyzed the percentage of closed stomata in the abaxial surface of the leaves, collected in different times of the day (9h, 12h, 15h and 18h). Additionally, plant samples were collected for the following analysis: fresh and dry mass of leaves, stems and legumes, and proline content in leaves and roots. The plants were harvested at the physiological maturity and the yield components and grain yield were determined. In addition, in order to identify polymorphisms in the sequences of promoters and genes related to drought, seven pairs of primers were tested on the group of genotypes. The drought susceptibility indexes (ISS) ranged from 0.65 to 1.10 in the group of genotypes, which the lowest values observed were for IAC Imperador (0.65) and BRS Esplendor (0.87), indicating the ability of these two genotypes to maintain grain yield under water stress condition. All genotypes showed reduction in yield components under water stress. IAC Imperador (43.4%) and BRS Esplendor (60.6%) had the lowest reductions in productivity and kept about 50% of the stomata closed during all the different times evaluated at last day of irrigation suppression. IAC Imperador showed greater water use efficiency and CO2 assimilation rate under drought stress. IPR Tuiuiú, IPR Tangará and IAC Imperador had the highest proline concentrations in the roots. Under water stress condition, there was a strong positive correlation (0.696) between the percentage of stomata closed with the number of grains per plant (0.696) and the fresh mass of leaves (0.731), the maximum percentage of stomata closed 73.71% in water stress. The accumulation of proline in the root was the character that most contributed to the divergence between the genotypes under water deficit, but not always the genotypes that have accumulated more proline were the most tolerant. The polymorphisms in DNA of coding and promoting sequences of transcription factors studied in this experiment did not discriminate tolerant genotypes from the sensitive ones to water stress.
