National Dry Bean Nursery in Bonita, 1995

Clark, L. J., Carpenter, E. W. 10 1900 (has links)
Results of the 1995 National Cooperative Dry Bean Nursery Trials are reported in this paper. Thirty seven varieties of eight different classes of beans were included in this replicated, small plot trial. Bill-Z, the leading pinto bean variety in the area, was the highest yielding variety in the study with a yield just under 3000 pounds per acre. Fleetwood Navy variety and UI 59 Great Northern variety were the next leading varieties with yields about 50 pounds less than Bill-Z. Chase, a pinto variety recently developed with strong rust tolerance, yielded only 2300 pounds per acre in this study. Yields, seed per pound, aerial biomass, harvest index and maturity class are also reported.

Effect of Lygus bugs (Hemiptera: Miridae) on field beans in Manitoba

NAGALINGAM, THARSHINIDEVY 04 1900 (has links)
Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), L. elisus (Van Duzee), L. borealis (Knight) and Adelphocoris lineolatus (Goeze) were the major species of plant bugs present in commercial field bean and soybean fields in 2008–2010. Lygus lineolaris comprised 78–95% of the mirid adults and <10% were A. lineolatus. Lygus lineolaris reproduced in field beans and completed a single generation. In field beans, adults entered the crop in late July, corresponding to growth stages from late vegetative to pod initiation, and females laid eggs in the crop. Nymphs hatched and developed and were most numerous at the seed development and seed filling stage. At seed maturity, late instar nymphs and adults were present. In soybeans, L. lineolaris reproduced but nymphs had poorer survival than in field beans. Late in the season, adult numbers greatly increased in field beans and soybeans, partly due to immigration of adult Lygus bugs from early‐maturing crops. Field beans and soybeans appeared to be a transient host for A. lineolatus. There were no effects on yield quality or quantity associated with the numbers of plant bugs seen in field surveys. In laboratory and field cages, the type of injury from L. lineolaris feeding differed among plant growth stages but not between nymphs and adults, although nymphs generally were more injurious. At flowering to pod initiation, abortion of buds, flowers or pods was the most common response to feeding injury; pod abortion did not occur when injury occurred at later growth stages. Sometimes abortions resulted in reduced yield quantity, but sometimes plants compensated for the injury. No loss of seed quality occurred from feeding at this stage. During seed development and filling, feeding injury most frequently affected the vascular supply to filling seeds, resulting in shriveled seeds and pods at harvest, and consequent reduced total harvested seed weight. At seed maturity, direct seed injury, involving penetration of the testa and loss of cotyledon tissue, was the most frequent injury and resulted in pits in the seed coat at harvest. There was no loss in yield quantity when feeding occurred at seed maturity, but seed pitting reduced yield quality. / May 2016

Cultivating the Three Sisters: Haudenosaunee foodways and acculturative change in the fur trade economy

Seidel, Jennifer 02 September 2016 (has links)
This study examines Haudenosaunee foodways in the Great Lakes Region between the early seventeenth century and the mid to late eighteenth century. The study is divided into two parts. First, the Creation Story is explored as it transmits the origin of the Three Sisters, a cropping system of inter-planted corn, beans and squash. The teachings of the Three Sisters highlights the importance of polyculture and sustainability. Conversely, a Westerners’ scientific account of how the Three Sisters came to be farmed together is studied. The independent pathways of the corn, beans and squash is examined as they arrived in New York State from the Mexico highlands. Recent findings show the Three Sisters were adopted independently in eastern North America beginning around A.D. 1300. They were grown together in some locations on a regular basis. The adoption of the polycultural complex of the Three Sisters was gradual and took place approximately 700 years ago as each of the crops adjusted to the climate and new surroundings. Secondly, the relationship between food, specifically the Three Sisters and acculturative change are examined pre-and-post contact. Acculturative change occurs when two independent cultures comes into contact with one another. The degree of influence is not equal as one culture can be absorbed, shaped or influenced more strongly by the other culture. The Haudenosaunee culture underwent acculturative change because the fur trade economy affected their foodways due to the influx of European goods such as the brass kettle and encroachment on their land and hunting grounds. The Haudenosaunee retained the core of their cultural beliefs and cultural practices because they made decisions, specifically their selection of goods and agricultural practices, as an extension of their cultural beliefs. Acculturative change resulted in a more monocropped and creolized agricultural system, usage of draft animals, fruit orchards and the plow. This study lies at the intersection of ethnohistory and food history. This study will serve as a tool to analyze and understand Haudenosaunee historical experiences from a First Nations cultural perspective. / Graduate / 2017-08-21

Abstract: The aim of this work was to select bean genotypes with resistance-related traits against Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman, 1833) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) to identify resistance categories, levels and mechanisms. The experiment was carried out at UNESP/FCAV, in the Departamento de Fitossanidade, Laboratório de Resistência de Plantas a Insetos, at 25 ± 1 ºC temperature, 70 ± 10% relative humidity and 12h photophase. Was evaluated antibiosis of bean genotypes to Z. subfasciatus, using completely randomized design with 43 genotypes and 40 seeds (replicates). The seeds were placed in cylindrical plastic containers in which 10 pairs of Z. subfasciatus were released per sample to lay eggs in the seeds. The amount of eggs in each seed was recorded daily in order to obtain two eggs per replicate. Seeds with two eggs were individualized, weighed and kept in 2 mL eppendorf for 10 days to check the eclosion of the larvae daily. At the end of the emergence of the adults the seeds were weighed again and then were dried in an oven to determine the dry weight consumed. Results were subjected to univariate and multivariate analyses to determine the levels of resistance. From this first assay, eight genotypes with resistance-related traits and two susceptible genotypes were screened to validate the prior test and determine the resistance categories and potential mechanisms. For this, free-choice and no-choice tests were performed, both in a completely randomized design with 10 screened genotypes and four replications. In the first test, arenas made of aluminum circular trays were used, which supported circular styrofoam plates with openings on the edges where cylindrical plastic containers with 10 g of seeds of the respective genotypes were inserted equidistantly from the center of the plate. Next, seven pairs of Z. subfasciatus per genotype were released on the center of the plate to evaluate attractiveness ... / Mestre

Efeito das fito-hemaglutininas de feijões (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) sobre a mucosa intestinal / Effects of phytohemagglutinins from phaseolus beans (P. vulgaris L.) on intestinal mucosa

Mancini Filho, Jorge 21 December 1982 (has links)
Não consta resumo na publicação / Biological and immunological properties of phytohemagglutins from two brazilian varieties of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) were studied. Through immunoprecipitation in agar gel, immuoenzymatic assays (ELISA) and eletrophoretic behavior after affinity chromatography purification it was shown that the lectins are similar. Both lectins when given to rats are toxic. They reduce growth and intestinal dissacharidase activity. They also able to smooth the \"microvillous\" of the enterocyte and to induce the appearance of autophagosomes in the enterocyte citoplasm. All this modification result in a reduced rate of carbohydrates absorption either in \"vitro\" or \"in vivo\".

Determinação de fenóis totais em frutos do café: avaliações em diferentes fases de maturação / Total phenolic determination in coffee beans: avaliation in different grown and developed process

Rossetti, Renato Pierrotti 14 September 2007 (has links)
O presente trabalho experimental focaliza o tema \"compostos fenólicos no café\". / This experimental work has focused the theme \"Phelonic Compound in Coffee Beans\". Among these compounds have been shown flavonoids species, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, caffeinic acid and their isomer. The phelonic species has presented after extraction and complexation from coffee samples (peels and beans) using coffee beans in different grown and developed process has been evaluated in quantitative research by using UV/VIS Spectrophotometry Values have been got about 10-6 mol.L-1 in peels and beans. The proposed extraction method has been not only viable but its use possible with preparing time of dried samples for analyses in about 40 minutes. The experimental evidence resulting from this research has proposed that such phenolic antioxidant species can be made a good use of discarded material (the peel of coffee beans) therefore a great economical benefit for sustainable coffee cultivation.

Efeitos da irradiação nas propriedades físico-químicas do feijão carioca / Effects of irradiation on the physicochemical properties of carioca beans

Lima, Dâmaris Carvalho 08 July 2016 (has links)
Eleva a capacidade de expansão do feijão na dose de 10 kGy, porém não altera a coloração do feijão, conforme o aumento das doses / The common bean is an important component in the diet of the average Brazilian person. Each harvest of beans, losses occur due to attacks of insects and rodents. One of the ways to preserve the beans, and at the same time keep its nutritional characteristics, is the use of gamma radiation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different doses of gamma radiation on the physical and chemical properties of the carioca variety of common beans subject to cooking of soaked and unsoaked beans. Portions of raw beans were used as control and the other was subject to ionizing radiation at doses of 1, 5 and 10 kGy. Following irradiation, a portion of the samples (control and irradiated) were soaked and the other was not, then all beans were cooked. The cooked samples were lyophilized, milled and then accommodated in pots and stored at -23ºC temperatures. The analysis of chemical composition, determination of protein digestibility, condensed tannin and phytic acid content were performed using the milled samples. Using whole grains, were performed analysis of expansion capability and hydration, cooking time and instrumental color. Irradiation did not alter the chemical composition of soaked and unsoaked samples. The condensed tannin levels did not reduce according to increased doses. The phytic acid concentrations were reduced at the doses of 5 and 10 kGy for soaked samples, whereas for the not soaked beans, gamma irradiation did not influence the phytate content. The protein digestibility decreased on soaked samples, at doses of 1 kGy and in the other doses, the reduction was not significant. As for not soaked beans, increases in digestibility were observed at dose of 10 kGy. As the doses increased, reduction in cooking time on soaked and unsoaked beans was noted. At a dose of 10 kGy, the bean expansion capability increased. The samples\' color did not change significantly, as the doses increased. Therefore, it is concluded that ionizing radiation has no effect on the chemical composition and tannin content. Irradiation influenced the phytates when applied in higher doses, but only in soaked samples, as well as mitigate protein digestibility on soaked beans. It reduces cooking time, raises bean expansion capability at a 10 kGy dose, but it does not change the bean color as doses increase

Biodisponibilidade de  peptídeos do feijão caupi (Vigna unguiculata L.Walp) e o metabolismo do colesterol / Bioavailability of cowpea peptides (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) and the cholesterol metabolism

Salvador, Bianka Caliman 19 April 2017 (has links)
Diet plays an important role in this process and some foods such as cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp), especially its protein, have been shown to have a potential for reducing plasma cholesterol. The hypocholesterolemic effects already observed indicated the use of cowpea protein, or its peptides, as a functional food ingredient for health promotion and reduction of disease risk. However, the consequences of gastrointestinal digestion on the absorption of these peptides are clearly complex, making in vitro and in vivo studies essential to assess their bioaccessibility and resistance to gastrointestinal degradation, as well as the availability and actual efficacy of these peptides. Objectives: To analyze the bioavailability of peptides and evaluate parameters related to cholesterol metabolism in animal models after ingestion of protein isolate of cowpea. Methods: Cowpea flour was defatted and its protein isolated. The protein isolate was subjected to in vitro hydrolysis methods to verify the formed peptide fractions and inference about albumin binding ability. Two in vivo experiments were conducted. In the first, the cowpea protein isolate was administered to rats and the concentration of the peptides monitored in the blood for 2 hours. The in vivo experiment 2 consisted of feeding hamsters with normal (N) - and hypercholesterolemic diets for 21 days, containing the cowpea protein as the sole dietary protein (I), compared to casein control (H). In this experiment were analyzed in the plasma: total cholesterol (TC) and fractions (LDLc, VLDLc and HDLc), triglycerides (TG) and peptides; In feces: total cholesterol (CF) and bile acids (AB); In the liver: cholesterol (CH) and total lipids (LH), HMGCR (enzymatic activity and expression) and expression of SREBP2, LDLR, ABCA1, ABCG1, ABCG5, ABCG8, LXRa and AMPK. XX. Results: The peptides identified from the protein hydrolysis of cowpea or from the plasma of the animals studied did not show similarities among the experiments or correspond to sequences previously identified for the cowpea from the database. CT, VLDLc, HDLc, TG, CH of hamsters were higher in groups H and I when compared to N; LDLc was higher for I compared to the others; LH was higher in H compared to N, and I did not differ from the others; CF was higher for I compared to N, and H did not differ from the others. The expression of ABCA1 was higher for I than the others; LXRa was higher for I than H, but N did not differ from the others; SREBP2 was lower in H compared to the others; HMGCR was more expressed in N compared to the others, whereas the activity of this enzyme was higher in I when compared to N, and H did not differ from the others. There was no difference between groups regarding AB or expression of ABCG8 or AMPK. No expression results were obtained for LDLR, ABCG1 and ABCG5. Conclusion: Although previous research to this work evidenced the ability of the cowpea protein isolate to inhibit HMGCR activity, inhibit micellar solubilization or improve the plasma lipid profile, in the current work this raw material did not show a positive cholesterol metabolism of hamsters under the experimental conditions used. The fragments indicated as peptides obtained from the protein hydrolysis of cowpea beans, or from the plasma of the animals studied did not correspond to peptides with proven, or even, with indication of bioactivity
