A Well Dressed Menagerie: Defining and Teaching Courtliness with Animals and Clothing in the Lais of Marie de France

Clark, C. Natalie Massie 08 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, I explore how the twelfth-century poet Marie de France combines animals and clothing to define and teach noble conduct in her Lais collection. I suggest that the nexus she creates between animals, dress, and virtue is chimeric but consistent, appearing differently in each narrative situation but recurring as a means of demonstrating moral conduct. My chapters explore three of her lais that combine beasts and attire to address the unique way Marie features the animal-clothing combination in each to teach distinctive lessons in virtuous behavior. My chapter on Guigemar argues that Marie uses the magical hind and the exchange of a knotted shirt and a belt to rework Ovidian anti-love themes to teach the value of being tightly bound in loyal love. Chapter 3 analyzes the eponymous knight's removal of his clothing as the mechanism that triggers his appearance as a werewolf in Marie's lai Bisclavret. I show that Bisclavret's werewolf form is like a sartorial skin under which his selfhood remains unaltered rather than a true transformation, and I argue that Marie uses the knight's appearance as a wolf so that the loyalty he demonstrates to his king and his homosocial community becomes voluntary and therefore serves as a model of noble conduct to the reader. Chapter 4 discusses Marie's use of the characters' relationships to animals and dress in her lai Lanval to assert the importance of a feminine contribution to leadership in society.

Águias, cisnes e vermes: o imaginário animal na literatura simbolista e decadentista / Eagles, swans and worms: animals in symbolist and decadent literatures

Matangrano, Bruno Anselmi 01 February 2019 (has links)
Symbolist and Decadent poetics emerged in the last quarter of the 19th century, in Paris, as a reply to Naturalism and its contemporary positivist and scientistic philosophies. Symbolism and Decadentism soon spread to other countries, among which Belgium, Portugal and Brazil, whose authors much dialogued with its fellow French writers. Works written in such a context used to feature anxieties as to existences metaphysical aspect, seek similarities between natural and spiritual world, as well as propose a series of aesthetical and form innovations, such as the free verse and the poetic prose. When it came to themes, they sought myths and legends that were widespread in the Western imaginary, making use of long-lost ancient symbols so as to bring forth new meanings and modernise outworn imagery. Given this background and recent studies concerning the representation of animals in literature, the present thesis sought to ascertain how present and important animals are to the late 19th-century imaginary and how innovative their portrayal is. Furthermore, it was our intent to establish the existence of a shared imaginary about animals among symbolists and decadents, regardless of their birthplace and despite the particularities of each author and work. In order to reach this goal, eagle, swan and worm images were our starting point, since they proved to be among the most meaningful and recurrent animals, both in French and Portuguese speaking authors. Then, I analysed them in their own context and proceeded to compare them to their traditionally assigned symbology, so as to learn the innovations proposed by symbolists and decadents, as well as the particularities of animals within these movements imaginary.

Fantechi, Giancarlo 10 1900 (has links)
This research aims at demonstrating the pertinence of the utilization of the novel The City of the Beasts (Isabel Allende, 2002) as a tool for teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE) at an intermediate level (B2) and in a multicultural context. Within this frame, the teaching of a second language pursues linguistic acquisition and encourages the exploration of a different culture in order to foster the discovery of the values of the other and its critical integration. This attitude shows to be indispensable for the development of the identity of the individual within societies growingly exposed from inside and outside to interaction between cultures. The selected novel allows access to interdisciplinary connections within Quebec’s College programs and promotes an attitude of openness toward the discovery of other cultures and values, requiring availability to question the student’s own cultural presuppositions, according to the tenets of contemporary intercultural studies. The novel belongs to the literary movement of Magical Realism, which helps introduce the students to the exploration of specifically Hispanic cultural themes. After a revision of the place of interculturalism and interdisciplinarity in the teaching of ELE, the dissertation analyses the specific contribution of the selected novel to these dimensions, in order to present exercises oriented toward the practice and the consolidation of grammatical and lexical knowledge, and toward the development of an intercultural sensibility in the students, providing individual and group activities built from the perspectives that emerge from the text.

Jacob van Maerlant se Der naturen bloeme as ensiklopediese narratief

Theron, Elizabeth Rabie 08 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / During the past decade various studies have been conducted on the medieval bestiary and simultaneously much has been written on the life and work of the medieval scholar and writer, Jacob van Maerlant. Van Maerlant's famous encyclopaedic work, Der Naturen B/oeme (Book of Nature) has been thoroughly investigated in recent literary studies, though little has been done to identify this work as encyclopaedic narrative. The term, encyclopaedic narrative, is relatively unknown in Western literature and therefore demands the research which is conducted in this thesis. In the course of this study, the genre of encyclopedic narrative is investigated and the Naturen 8/oeme is identified as a member of this exclusive genre. Edward Mendelson's article "From Dante to Pynchon" (1976) serves as the starting point for this study, from where it continues its investigation into the works of Jacob Van Maerlant. Van Maerlant's Der Naturen 8/oeme is compared to a unique set of qualities for the encyclopaedic narrative in which corresponding points are identified. From this investigation it is shown that Der Naturen B/oeme qualifies as a member of the genre, encyclopaedic narrative. / Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / M.A. (Afrikaans)
