The Incremental Effects of Ethnically Matched Animated Agents in Restructuring the Irrational Career Beliefs of Rural Caucasian Young Women

abstract: The Believe It! program developed and evaluated by Kovalski & Horan (1999) was the first interactive, multimedia, psychological-education intervention deployed on the Internet. In a controlled study, the authors reported that the ethnically diverse cartoon models were partially successful in using cognitive restructuring to promote more reasonable career beliefs among Caucasian middle-school young women. It was not clear if the program's lack of efficacy among minority young women was due to computer literacy factors affected by SES. Subsequently, three studies explored the role of matching or mismatching the ethnicity of animated agents in a graphically enhanced program with that of the young women receiving the cognitive restructuring treatment. Each of the studies used the same four outcome measures (Occupational Sex-Role Questionnaire, Believe It Measure, Career Beliefs Inventory, and the Career Myths Scale) before and after matched and mismatched participants received the Believe It! intervention. Webster (2010) analyzed data from African-American participants, Hardy (2011) Latinas, and Zhang (2013) Asian-Americans. The current study examined the matching hypothesis on a sample of ethnically isolated Caucasian young women in a rural setting. The results obtained in the three previous studies are consistent with similar research involving client and counselor dyads (e.g., Cabral & Smith, 2011). The Believe It! program had a clear impact on ethnically matched African-American young women, whereas pairings on ethnicity did not improve outcomes for either Latinas or Asian-Americans. Don’t eat the yellow snow—Urine in art: events of interpretationUrine seams to evoke feelings. Through four different lenses, this bachelor’s thesisexamines urine in four different works of art. The works of art are Three Grazes bySally Mann, Manneken Pis by Hieronymus Duquesnoy the younger, Fideicommissumby Ann-Sofie Sidén and Bad Bad Boy by Tommi Toija, all of which in some waycontains urine as part of their motif. The four perspectives are The body as abject, Thebody as observed, The body as communication and The body as phenomenon. Thethesis reaches the conclusion that urine must be regarded as part of a syntagm and thissyntagm is interpreted in the light of a culturally conditioned resonance, part of amake-believe culture that can and, as it were, also interpret water as urine. To interpretwater as urine depends on where the water is pouring from in an overall body syntagm.Furthermore, depending on what gender the body is interpreted as (male or female) theurine will carry different value connotations. Interpreting art is thus reverberating aMake-Believe regime as a recursive process. A Make-believe regime in itself containsa phenomenological intention.

Unbelief as a theme in Mark’s Gospel

Countless articles and monographs have been published which have paid attention to the various themes in Mark’s Gospel. However, to date there is no publication that attempts to understand the theme ‘unbelief’ in Mark’s Gospel. This study attempts to investigate the literary-theological functions of unbelief as a theme in Mark. This approach is based on the exegetical perspective of several passages (2:1-12; 3:1-6; 4:35-41; 6:1-6; 8:14-21; 9:14-29; 11:27-33; 15:27-32) in which the theme of unbelief appears. Given this approach, it becomes clear that, although at different points of his Gospel, Mark applies the term ‘unbelief’ used to depict Jesus’ opponents to the disciples as well, he distinguishes between the two groups. This applies also to his description of the unbelief of both the groups. The opponents’ unbelief does not mean primarily a lack of insight, but rather a conscious refusal to believe Jesus’ claims and demands. Throughout Mark’s Gospel the opponents, due to their hardened hearts, they are ever seeing and hearing but never understanding (3:5; 4:12). Similar to 1QS 3:18-21, in Mark 4:15 the fundamental source of the opponents’ rejection is the result of Satan-inspired opposition (1QS 3:18-21; Mark 4:15) Since Satan prevents the opponents from listening to Jesus’ message, they do not understand it and reject him and eventually bring about his death (3:6). Thus, to the opponents, Jesus’ salient teachings and miracles have only produced rejecting questions, rather than belief (cf. 3:6, 21, 22-29, 30-31; 6:1-6). Therefore, their obstinate rejection necessarily excludes them from obtaining forgiveness of God. However, if they repent of their sins and accept His prophetic message, they will gain God’s forgiveness as a benefit in the Kingdom (cf. 12:34). On the other hand, the disciples’ unbelief, unlike the opponents’ unbelief, does not consist in the wilful rejection of Jesus. But, the disciples’ unbelief implies their failure to believe in Jesus’ identity (4:35-41; 6:45-52; 8:14-21; 9:14-29 etc.) shown in his teachings and actions. The disciples are in danger of being the outsiders whose hearts were hardened, having eyes but not seeing, and ears but not hearing (8:17-18; cf. 3:5; 4:11-12). Although the hardness of heart, which is associated with Jesus’ opponents, is also attributed to the disciples, the use of this term is not meant to suggest that the disciples have sided with the opponent of Jesus. Rather, it is indicative of an attempt by Jesus, by bombarding them with a series of rhetorical questions, to warn his disciples who are in mortal danger of succumbing to the same unbelief that has afflicted the opponents. Thus, unlike a direct statement regarding the opponents’ hardness of heart in 3:5 and 4:12, the disciples’ hardness of heart is obliquely described through rhetorical questions in 8:17-18. The theological perspective that is presented in the theme of unbelief in Mark is that an attempt is made to emphasize faith, which stands literally in contrast to unbelief. Through speech acts concerning unbelief, Mark emphasizes the fact that those who are the true disciples must follow Jesus with faith under difficult circumstance. What experienced teachers believe : a study of select teachers' perceptions on teacher efficacy and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

This project was designed to discover a possible correlation between the theories surrounding teacher efficacy and Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (1943). Teacher efficacy is a sense of confidence that teachers have in knowing that teachers can truly make a difference in the lives of their students. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (1943) theory was a concept created which explores five levels of life needs. These needs are illustrated in the form of a pyramid and allow for the understanding and development of Self-Actualization, or one's greatest potential. The foundation for this research was the hypothesis that if teachers have a high level of efficacy as well as a focus on the desired level of achievement, known as self-actualization, found in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (1943), then they would have an optimal learning environment for their students. This study was conducted by administering two surveys to ten teachers located in Florida, Pennsylvania, and New York. The surveys were made up of approximately twenty questions each, with one in regards to teacher efficacy, and the other referencing self-actualization. The surveys were completed anonymously, and then analyzed to research if one's level of teacher efficacy and focus on self-actualization enhanced their teaching environment. The correlation for these two views relates to the attitudes and perceptions teachers have on themselves and their abilities. At times, teachers who have a positive . outlook on education, believe in the potential of their students, and create classroom environments that integrates the strengths of each child are also confident, optimistic individuals who focus on achieving their best life. The potential allows for a dedicated, encouraging, and respectable role model for students.

Ce mémoire s'inscrit dans la constellation de questions regroupées sous l'étiquette de l'éthique de la croyance. Plus spécifiquement, il cherche à analyser la viabilité des jugements tout bien considéré portant sur les croyances lorsque des raisons de types distincts (raisons épistémiques et raisons pragmatiques) entrent en conflit. Cette analyse se fera à l'aune d'une recherche portant sur l'instrumentalisme de la croyance, la position avançant que les croyances sont instrumentales à nos intérêts et que, par conséquent, la normativité de la croyance se jauge en fonction de nos objectifs. L'instrumentalisme de la croyance est tombé sous le coup de plusieurs critiques dans les dernières années et se mémoire se donne comme mission d'en évaluer la portée. Si d'aventure l'instrumentalisme de la croyance devait être une position viable, il y a lieu de penser qu'il existe une commensurabilité possible entre raisons de différents types. / This thesis is part of a larger group of philosophical inquiries usually placed under the label of "Ethics of Belief". Specifically, my aim is to examine the possibility of all things considered judgments concerning beliefs for which there is a conflict between reasons of distinct kinds (epistemic reasons and pragmatic reasons). This inquiry will mostly concern epistemic instrumentalism, the position holding that one's beliefs are instrumental to one's own objectives and thus, that the rationality of beliefs must be an instrumental rationality. It appears that this position has been the aim of a few criticism in the recent years and my goal is to evaluate the strength of such criticism. If epistemic instrumentalism ends up being a viable thesis, we can expect that there may not be any incommensurability between reasons for belief of different kinds.

Power Games : Rules and Roles in Second Life

This study investigates how the members of four different role-playing communities on the online platform Second Life perform social as well as dramatic roles within their community. The trajectories of power influencing these roles are my main focus. Theoretically I am relying primarily on performance studies scholar Richard Schechner, sociologist Erving Goffman, and post-structuralists Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Felìx Guattari. My methodological stance has its origin primarily within literature studies using text analysis as my preferred method, but I also draw on the (cyber)ethnographical works of primarily T.L. Taylor, Celia Pearce, and Mikael Jakobsson. In this dissertation my focus is the relationship of the role-player to their chosen role especially in terms of the boundary between being in character, and as such removed from ”reality,” and the popping out of character, which instead highlights the negotiations of the social, sometimes make-belief, roles. Destabilising and problematising the dichotomy between the notion of the online as virtual and the offline as real, as well as the idea that everything is ”real” regardless of context, my aim is to understand role-play in a digital realm in a new way, in which two modes of performance, dramatic and social, take place in a digital context online — or inworld as many SL residents call it.

The purpose of this study is to attain an understanding of my work for the viewer as well as myself. These works on paper are visual documents illustrating my ideas and opinions about media and its desire for control. Through research, critical thinking, experience, and exposure to media (both wanted and unwanted) I have created imagery that I feel is exemplary of our forced relationship with advertising. In order to accomplish this I studied my influences, and the origin of my current work. Reading upon realization of those influences further informed the work. Every conceivable influence was studied and analyzed, and those studies are contained in this thesis. Questions of audience, scale, medium, and history were also taken into account as a measure to make this thesis cohesive. As an audience for advertisers we must constantly be aware of how our sensitivities are being played upon.

OS-hockey som TV-sändning, dokumentär och fiktionsfilm : Sportens betydelse för den nationella identiteten

Syftet med denna uppsats var att studera sportfilmen som genre och se hur denna genre konstruerar nationell identitet på nationell och lokal nivå. Ytterligare ett syfte var att undersöka hur en sporthändelse televiseras, dokumenteras respektive fiktionaliseras. Jag har genomfört en jämförande analys av likheter och skillnader mellan mer dokumenterande genrer och fiktion. Jag har analyserat skillnaderna mellan den TV-sända hockeymatchen vid OS 1980 mellan USA och Sovjet (även kallad ”Miracle on Ice” eftersom USA vann matchen mot de på förhand tippade som helt överlägsna Sovjet), dokumentären om matchen, Do You Believe in Miracles från 2001, och fiktionsfilmen Miracle från 2004 som bygger på nämnda match.   Det resultat jag kommit fram till är att både dokumentären och filmen om matchen är uppbyggda för att förstärka den amerikanska patriotismen. Genom att spela på nostalgi och gamla minnen ämnar båda filmerna, som kom i en för USA orolig tid att få det amerikanska folket att känna stolthet igen, på samma sätt som de gjorde efter att de vann mot Sovjet. För att ytterligare förstärka stolthetskänslorna har fiktionsfilmen Miracle även ändrat på en hel del i skildringen av själva matchen för att få USA att framstå som mer hårt arbetande, ärligare och bättre än de egentligen var. Även händelser utanför isen är ändrade eller tillagda för att ge filmens tittare ännu mer att känna stolthet för.

Depuis le XIXe siècle en France, l’opposition entre agrément et utilitaire détermine nos représentations du jardin. Ainsi, le potager s’inscrirait avant tout dans une logique de production, à l’opposé du plaisir créatif et distingué propre au jardin d’agrément. L’observation de nombreux jardins vivriers et des manières de faire de leurs jardiniers, montre que ces jardins sont chargés d’intentions et de symboles dépassant la seule préoccupation de produire de la nourriture. C’est le cas des jardins éloignés du domicile, tels les jardins collectifs, familiaux ou partagés, mais aussi d’autres jardins, vivriers en Papouasie et en Amazonie, transitoires à New York. L’intimité du jardin, la mémoire du lieu, le « contact » avec la terre, l’autoproduction de nourriture, la dimension collective et l’exposition au regard des autres sont sources d’un fort investissement symbolique, suscitant des formes particulières d’appropriation, de sociabilité et d’expression ; unefaçon de concrétiser sa présence au monde, sa relation au temps, à « l’environnement », aux autres et à soi-même. Sans doute le mythe paradisiaque se construit-il sur ces aspects, dont se saisissent aussi les philosophes et les poètes. Cette recherche a également pour objet de souligner le hiatus entre la conception des jardins proposés par les collectivités publiques et les pratiques quotidiennes des jardiniers / Since the 19th century, the image we have of gardens has depended on the purpose of whether it is for pleasure or utility. Thus gardening would be aimed, above all at producing, in opposition to growing his own garden for fancy. The study of numerous food gardens and their gardeners ’way of doing shows that these places are full of will and symbols far beyond the mere preoccupation of growing food. This is the case of those gardens away from home such as collective, family orcommunal gardens, but also others such as food gardens in Papua New Guinea and Amazonia, or transitory gardens in New York. The intimacy of a garden, the memory of the place, the “relationship” with the soil, the growing of one’s own food, the collective dimension and the exposure to people’s eyes are incentives for a strong and symbolic commitment. This generates approbation, sociability and expression; a way of making his presence real to the world, his relationship with time, the environment, the others and with himself. The heavenly myth may be built on these aspects which are seized by philosophers and poets as well. This study aims also at highlighting the hiatus between the conception of the gardens proposed by the councils and the gardeners’ daily practices.
