Experience Grand-Guignol: popis projektu z hlediska dramaturga / Expérience Grand-Guignol: a project description from the viewpoint of the dramaturg

Kebrtová, Helena January 2016 (has links)
This Master Thesis describes the Expérience Grand-Guignol project, consisting on the one hand of research of the texts preserved in the Parisian Theatre Grand-Guignol (1897 – 1963) and on the other hand of a graduation performance in Theatre DISK which staged four plays from the repertory of this famous theatre of horrors. The Expérience Grand-Guignol project explored in practice various approaches to the historical material of Grand-Guignol placed in a contemporary context. It examined limits of the genre and methods of staging favorable to the Grand-Guignol experience today. The thesis is structured in three parts. The first part presents the Grand-Guignol theatre phenomenon, its history and theory compiled from accessible literature. The second part is dedicated to a detailed preparation and realization of the project. It presents four performed shows, including the overall set design and storyline, which provides the frame for the cycle. The last part presents a short reflection on fear as an effect of a theatre performance, a summary of observations from the practical examination, and an evaluation of project.

Pitsos, Nicolas 28 November 2014 (has links)
This study outlines the competitive narratives of the 1912-1913 Balkan wars inside the French media landscape (national liberation/unification wars, new crusade, just war, versus illegitimate conquest war, new colonialist expedition, pacifist settlement versus militarist rhetoric, nationalist approaches versus federalist proposals). It is also a schematization essay of the different factors-parameters and their interactions, (personal affinities, ideological orientations, economical interests, geopolitical considerations, media coverage, representation of the Self and the Other, the Here and Elsewhere, the Past, the Present and the Future) intervening in one’s conflict perception on behalf of a phenomenally external society to its unfolding. It also informs us about journalistic practices and the media’s public tastes stretching the rising importance of war reporters and the demand for a sensational, direct and omniscient news coverage. It also explores the place of Balkan people, Balkans’ history and geography, in the imagination of French Belle Époque, as well as the way Balkan wars had been invited within French political, economical and socio-cultural life at the eve of the Great War. Finally, it questions the role of belligerents’ propagandas in the newspapers’ transformation at a media and representational battlefield between the actors directly concerned by the conflict and the external observers expressing themselves in French media, having as major stake the definition of a political and axiological European entity.

L'Orient-Express, configuration littéraire d'un mythe européen (1883-2000)

El Gammal, Blanche 21 November 2016 (has links)

Lefrançois, Hélène January 2013 (has links)

The unsinkable progressivism : An investigation of the Titanic as a symbol for the idea of progressivism.

Helmersson, Markus January 2020 (has links)
In this investigation I will go to the bottom of the idea of progressivism by using one of the symbols of its consequences: The Titanic disaster. The purpose is to analyze the claims of Walter Lord, comparing his story with the historical development of the 1900’s and Thomas S. Kuhns theory of paradigm shifts. According to Lord the Titanic disaster changed humans’ view on the world and their place in it, leading to a paradigm shift. By using the method of hermeneutics and critical discourse analysis I will show that Lords claims, depending on the perspective, are somewhat exaggerated. Instead Titanic would become a powerful symbol for the critics of the current paradigm, which is that of progressivism. Even if the Titanic disaster led to some changes, the idea of progressivism has been able to modify and adapt itself, reproducing the current societal paradigm of progressivism.

A conversation between Art Nouveau and Digital design

Lotz, Felix January 2016 (has links)
The study contrasts the architecture of the Art Nouveau period  1880-1915 with contemporary curvilinear computational designs created 1980-2015. This is done by examining similarities and differences in design context, methods, philosophy and forms. The study includes an analysis of the curved lines used in Art Nouveau architecture as well as comparative study of  the two periods’ building compositions, façades and ornamentation. The thesis tries to answer the following questions: Is it possible to identify significant forms or geometric markers in  the Art Nouveau architecture of the period 1890 to 1920? How do such markers differ from post 1980 computational curvilinear architecture? Is it possible to reinterpret Art Nouveau architecture today in a relevant way?

Leduc, Marie-Pier 08 1900 (has links)
This master thesis proposes a look of various statuses given to contemporary composers in the Parisian musical context at the beginning of the 20th century, through an analysis of the specialised press of that period. The corpus of my research consists in three different journals, each one with its own distinct sphere of sociability: La revue musicale (histoire et critique), a scholarly publication close to the Schola cantorum; Le Mercure musical, an avant-garde publication which has championed Maurice Ravel’s music; and a third, Musica, a magazine with a much larger audience, intended for the growing middle class, and which readership is mostly constituted of women and music learners. This thesis reveals that the traditional opposition between the concepts of craftman-composer and of genius-composer — a concept deriving from the end of the 18th century and the 19th century — sees the rise of a third component at the beginning of the 20th century: the star-composer, a status which was until then only limited to performers. Those three statuses coexisted throughout the musical press during the early 20th century. Their promotion by specific publications was in some cases done for aesthetic reasons and in others for economical motives. The outcome of this study reveals that the musical press is not only an indicator of the changes in the composers’ status within the array of cultural greatness, but it has also played an active role in these transformations.

Pelotas (re)vista: a Belle Époque da cidade através da mídia impressa / Pelotas (re)viewed: the Belle Époque in the town through the press

It begins in France by the end of the 19th century, informed by the ideals of the French Revolution. Change, progress and freedom were the central themes on a search after civility, in a modernity-discourse. Alterations in values and usages of the European bourgeoisie were quickly assimilated in Brazil, most if all in Rio de Janeiro. The southern town of Pelotas had straight ties to the imperial court in Rio for political and economical seasons and to Europe because of the frequent travels by the high class to the old continent. For this reason it ended up absorbing such values. Due to this circumstance a reformulation of the urban space took place modifying the way of life of a part of the population. This process can be traced in the print media of those times. It is for this reason and because of a considerable socio-cultural effervescence that this work aims to analyze the Pelotas way of life and its visibility through the local press. These were ideas of progress and civilization disclosed through the press and based on the Belle Époque. The object of the analysis is the magazine Illustração Pelotense , published between 1919 and 1925. This choice was made because of the range of coverage of the magazine which shows how much the readers were interested in it. Though the focus lies on Illustração Pelotense , an exploratory study was carried out on the local print media from the middle of the 19th century aiming to understand the transformation process of the town, which included the press. A world-view enounced through signs of an other one , in a euphoric period, in a discourse of modernity, in changes of societies` way of life. The press was the instrument that enlightened the town. As theoretical and methodological basis we used the theory of discursive semiotics, from the regimes of visibility of Eric Landowski (1992, 2002) and Ana Claudia de Oliveira (1997). The Belle Époque of Pelotas shows a quick assimilation of new elements in a town with roots in the countryside. In that period Pelotas transformed itself, adapting to the European style that was absorbed in Brazil. The town changed, the press changed. Ultimately, it changed in its own ways, in its way of life, in its identity, in the recreation of the European style, in a specific way brazilianed / A Belle Époque foi um período de mudanças políticas, econômicas e sócio-culturais. Mudou a cidade, mudou a mídia impressa.
