"The Breadth, and Length, and Depth, and Height" of Early Modern English Biblical TranslationsMarsalene E Robbins (9148919) 29 July 2020 (has links)
<p>The significance of early modern Bible translation cannot be
overstated, but its “breadth, and length, and depth, and height” have often
been understated (King James Version, Ephesians 3.18). In this study, I use
three representative case studies of very different types of translation to
create a more dynamic understanding of actual Bible translation practices in
early modern England. These studies examine not only the translations
themselves but also the ways that the translation choices they contain interacted
with early modern readers. </p><p><br></p>
<p>The
introductory Chapter One outlines the history of translation and of Bible
translation more specifically. It also summarizes the states of the fields into
which this work falls, Translation Studies and Religion and Literature. It
articulates the overall scope and goals of the project, which are not to do something
entirely new, per se, but rather to use a new framework to update the work that
has already been done on early modern English Bible translation. Chapter Two
presents a case study in formal interlingual translation that analyzes a
specific word-level translation choice in the King James Version (KJV) to
demonstrate the politics involved even in seemingly minor translation choices.
Chapter Three treats the intermedial translation of the Book of Psalms in the
Sternhold and Hopkins psalter. By using the language and meter of the populace
and using specific translation choices to accommodate the singing rather than
reading of the Psalms, the Sternhold and Hopkins psalter facilitates a more
active and participatory experience for popular worshippers in early modern
England. Finally, Chapter Four analyzes John Milton’s literary translation in <i>Paradise
Lost </i>and establishes it as a spiritual and cultural authority along the
lines of formal interlingual translations. If we consider this translation as
an authoritative one, Milton’s personal theology expressed therein becomes a
potential theological model for readers as well. </p>
<p><br></p><p>By creating
a more flexible understanding of what constitutes an authoritative translation
in early modern England, this study expands the possibilities for the
theological, interpretive, and practical applications of biblical texts, which touched
not only early modern readers but left their legacies for modern readers of all
kinds as well. </p>

The name Jehovah on trial in Russia : Is it an inappropriate and disqualifying addition made to the Bible, or has the Russian nation been deprived of the awareness of its origin?Magnusson, Sandra January 2022 (has links)
Because of the recent ban on a Bible translation, in part because of the renderingof God’s name as Jehovah, this thesis analyses what can be learned on the topic of the attitude in Russia towards that name from a historic viewpoint. Early occurrences of the name within the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as examples of prominent authors’ usage of the name in the secular literary sphere, are being discussed. Particular interest is paid to the literature of the 19th century, in an attempt to determine what knowledge the authors had access to, as well as to establish how familiar this rendering of the name was to the society. The analysis continues with literary examples from the 20th century, searching for indications that could reveal the time and possible reason for the altered connotations to the name. My interest is the cultural and historical perspective on the awareness of the name, whether it was a natural part of the cultural and religious heritage or not. And if it was – when and why was the general public deprived of that heritage?I believe that this interdisciplinary approach can provide a valuable picture, impossible to gain if the discussion would have been solely about religiousminorities’ rights.

This research aimed to determine whether the rejection by Russian Orthodox Church leaders
of recent translations of the Bible into Russian could be ascribed to a conflict of Russian and
Western translation norms. Using Lefevere's (1992) notion of systems, the study compared
the norms of Russian Bible translations, Western Bible translation and Russian literary
translation, as well as those of a segment of the target audience, to determine the extent of
their compatibility with each other and with the translations in question. The results showed
that the recent translations did reflect the norms of Western Bible translation, but that these
were not atypical of norms for previous Russian and Slavonic translations, nor for the norms
of Russian literary translation. However, the results also showed that in practice target
audience norms mirrored those of the Russian Orthodox Church, resulting in a similar

Mapping theological trajectories that emerge in response to a Bible translationNaylor, Mark, 1959- 12 1900 (has links)
This study identifies a theological trajectory of first generation “believers” – those who allow the
biblical text to speak authoritatively into their lives – within the Sindhi community of Pakistan. A
passage from a contemporary translation of the New Testament in the Sindhi language – Luke
15:11-32, Jesus’ Parable of the Two Lost Sons – was presented in interview settings to discover
how Sindhis express their faith as they consider the message of the parable. Culture texts
generated by believers are compared to those generated by “traditional” Muslim Sindhis who do
not accept the Bible as authoritative. Twenty–eight people identified as Sindhi believers were
interviewed as well as twenty traditional Sindhi Muslims. Similarities and contrasts between the
two groups are used to discover how the theological praxis of the believers is being impacted and
how they are adjusting their view of God as they engage scripture. The description of theological
trajectories that diverge from accepted traditional convictions is referred to as “mapping.”
Six themes were identified from the interviews that are important for both groups while
demonstrating distinct contrasts and similarities. The themes are (1) God is
compassionate/kind/merciful/loving beyond our imagination, (2) God forgives his servants who
repent, (3) Concepts of rewards, punishment and the fear of God, (4) The relationship of human
beings with God (child versus servant), (5) Issues of justice, honor and status, and (6) The
importance of obedience to God. An evaluation of the six themes revealed one overarching
trajectory: a shift from a dominant master–servant view of the Divine–human relationship to a father–child paradigm. The research affirms that the shift to a biblically shaped view of God is not
disconnected from previous beliefs, but is based on and shaped by a priori assumptions held by
members of society. Commitment to the Bible as God’s word speaking authoritatively to believers
creates a shift or trajectory of faith so that current perspectives, symbols and metaphors of God are
being reformed and reconfirmed through the believers’ interaction with the Sindhi translation of

Groenewald taught New Testament subjects as professor at the Faculty of Theology (Section 8 - DRC) at the University of Pretoria for 33 years. As one of the first four professors of the new Faculty
of Theology he helped to lay a sound foundation. He served as dean of the Faculty for 21 years (1948 - 1969). As administrator and lecturer he played an important role in the establishment, recognition and development of the Faculty. He was a born exegete, the Nestor of New Testament science in SA. He is regarded as a great theologian and the doyen of New Testament research and exegesis in SA.
As writer of Afrikaans theological literature Groenewald undeniably fulfilled the role of a pioneer. This was recognised by the award of the Stals-prize for Theology to him, the first time in history. Apart from this he received four honourary doctorates and various other important
awards. He made an important contribution to Bible translation and translatory science.
As church and cultural leader he strove to find solutions for the problems of his church and people. He made a significant contribution in the ecumenical field.
Apartheid was given its biblical foundation by Groenewald during the forties. His intention was to stimulate thought in the search for a solution to the serious racial problem.
Further facets of Groenewald's work await research in order to paint a

This will be done with the laity and academia in mind and hence we will study these spiritualities as they pertain both to experience and academic enquiry. We will also explore the possible personal and societal transformation, which could result from such an investigation.
