A Multi-Methodology Study of the Historic Impact of Soft Systems Methodology and Its Associated Data Visualization Approach in the Context of Operations and Business Strategy

Warren, Scott Joseph 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this three-essay dissertation was to expand knowledge and theory regarding soft systems methodologies (SSMs) and data visualization approaches in business, engineering, and other social sciences. The first essay depicts a bibliometric analysis study of the historic impacts of SSM from 1980-2018 on business, engineering, and other social sciences fields. This study found 285 articles that described or employed SSM for research and included outcomes such as top SSM authors, author citation impacts, common dissemination outlets, time-bound distribution of publications, and other relevant findings. This study provided a picture of who, what, why, when, and where SSM has had the greatest impact on academic thought and practice. The second essay presents research on the academic impact of Systemigrams, an associated data visualization approach, finding examples of conceptual or research development that employed Systemigrams to depict complex problem situations. Recommendations for improvement of designing these data visualizations to increase their field use resulted from this study. The final essay leverages a selection of the articles as use cases to produce a grounded theory study to identify phenomena that arose from the use of SSM for operations and firm strategy research. This study identified two broad themes including (i) scope, structure, and process challenges and (ii) performance and evaluation limitations. These themes were explained by six patterns that emerged from the publications. Each produced change recommendations for SSM process, practice, and reporting to support its continued viability and adoption in business and operations research.

Bibliometric Analysis, Case Analysis and Reappraisal on the Usability and Safety of Medical Devices

Ashwini Srinivasaprasad (14243777) 10 December 2022 (has links)
<p>    </p> <p>Healthcare is one of the most critical and valuable industries. This report is a systematic literature review of the usability and safety of medical devices used extensively for patient care. Safety has been broadly considered to mean in-patient safety and improving patient care. As part of the literature review and bibliometric analysis, a search of all the articles containing the keywords “medical device” AND “usability” AND “safety” was conducted on both Web of Science and Google Scholar (through Harzing’s Publish or Perish). The results that also contained the metadata were exported to VOS Viewer for cluster generation and co-citation analyses. As part of data mining, statistical tests such as regression analysis were conducted to find the causal relationship and significance between the variables. Following this, a core set of articles, some of which demonstrated strong ties to the topic at hand, were chosen from various databases and co-citation analyses. The core set also included a relevant chapter from the <em>Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics, Fourth Edition </em>by Salvendy. The articles were added to Mendeley and then exported to MAXQDA for the word-cloud generation. As part of the lexical search, Springer’s AuthorMapper and Digital Science’s Dimensions were used to extract trending keywords, author information, and metadata of relevant contributions made to the topic by institutions worldwide. The regression analysis revealed a significant tie between the database and the number of articles. Additionally, the regression showed that cites per year in Google Scholar had a significant effect on g-index. Finally, the discussion section included a case study of three different drug delivery systems. This aimed to perform a risk assessment of pre-existing “smart” medical devices. The analysis revealed that there is a high risk of malfunction in all the devices due to pre-programmed dose error. None of the devices were capable of “learning’ from patient behavior and adapting accordingly. Finally, the paper discusses Human-Computer Interaction and Human Factors Problems that exist in software medical devices that utilize AI/ML methodologies. Overall, the main keywords of human cognition, health informatics, precision medicine, applied ergonomics, and design safety showed high relevance within all the chosen articles. These keywords are highly reflective of the fields that are currently disrupting the conventional governance of healthcare. </p>

[pt] A INTELIGÊNCIA CULTURAL NOS ESTUDOS ORGANIZACIONAIS: UMA REVISÃO BIBLIOMÉTRICA / [en] CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE ON ORGANIZATIONAL STUDIES: A BIBLIOMETRIC REVIEW

ANA CAROLINA MARTINI BRAZ DE MELLO E SOUZA 16 April 2019 (has links)
[en] Mastering intercultural skills in a globalized world where people from dif-ferent cultural backgrounds are trying to live together, exchange experiences and join multicultural work teams is becoming key to achieve best results. In 2003, cultural intelligence emerges as a relevant construct to address this issue. The main goal of the present work was to understand the state of art on cultural intelli-gence in the Management field as well as to identify the main themes explored so far (clusters), their evolution, focus of interest and current stage in order to pro-pose a theoretical framework and a future research agenda. A bibliometric review of the scientific papers (articles and reviews) published in English in SCOPUS database was carried out, comprising a period of fifteen years (from 2004 to 2018). In order to verify the impact of the CI research in the Management field, as well as to map scientific production considering different units of analysis (like author, affiliation, country, etc) a statistical descriptive analysis of the final sam-ple data (262 documents) was carried out using the Microsoft Excel software. A bibilometric analysis (citation and co-word) using SciMAT software was also a choice to identify clusters and their evolution through time. The results pointed to some themes as research avenues opportunity to be explored, such as cultural in-telligence and: other types of intelligence, intercultural negotiation, intercultural training and development, organizational performance and strategy, conflict man-agement, organizational cultural intelligence, antecedents of cultural intelligence; among others.

Aparisi Torrijo, Sofia 06 September 2022 (has links)
[EN] One of the most significant organizational elements identified by the research community for developing entrepreneurship is leadership (Ensley, Pearce & Hmieleski, 2006). For entrepreneurial activities to be successful, leaders require certain leadership factors. When studying these factors, we find that they are located at the intersection of two independent domains, namely leadership and entrepreneurship, and create a new paradigm called entrepreneurial leadership. This relatively recent construct arises to respond to the challenges and difficulties encountered by entrepreneurs throughout their entrepreneurial activities to overcome them. However, neither a clear definition of entrepreneurial leadership, nor sufficient conceptual and theoretical frameworks, are available. The different definitions tend to focus on entrepreneurial leaders' traits, characteristics and behaviors. Historically, research has analyzed leaders' traits and demographics. Entrepreneurs' age, education and ethnicity are more relevant than what they were, and attention is not normally paid to the entrepreneurship context, i.e., the different phases through which an entrepreneurial activity passes. However, according to the entrepreneurial leadership theory, context is an essential moderator of leader effectiveness. Furthermore, if we wish to address leadership factors in women's entrepreneurship, there is consistent evidence that leader and entrepreneur are gendered constructs. There is a dominant male bias in the leadership and entrepreneurship fields, and everything about women's entrepreneurship and what can impact its growth deserve to be studied in their own right (Bruin, Brush, & Welter, 2006). Despite these difficulties, not enough research has been done to better understand what leadership attributes are considered the most important depending on the entrepreneurial process stage, whether they are contextual or universal, let alone gendered. To conclude, it is essential to identify and better understand which leadership factors or skills are most valuable to successfully overcome challenges throughout the entrepreneurial process. The present doctoral thesis aims to investigate these questions. First of all, with a bibliometric analysis the initial part of this research evidences, with and without a gender focus, that indeed the entrepreneurial leadership construct is a domain with its own identity because relatively recently it suffered from lack of conceptual and theoretical frameworks and empirical models. In addition, when we approach entrepreneurial leadership with a gender lens, there is consistent evidence that standard descriptions of entrepreneurial leaders' characteristics are based on norms and traits with a clear dominant male gender bias. Entrepreneurial leadership discourse tends to move towards the subordination of all those who do not conform to that stereotype. In the second part of the thesis, through a literature review it identifies the most essential attributes of female entrepreneurial leadership, which will be the basis for building the relational models that are evaluated in the final part. By means of a comprehensive literature review, 267 leadership factors are identified and collected. Thanks to a co-occurrence analysis of the factors, it discovers that the most frequent are innovation, communication, networking, passion, risk-taking, vision, opportunity, decision making, self-efficacy, the need for achievement, among others. Another contribution is that no gender-differentiated leadership attributes are observed compared to similar studies without a gender focus. As a limitation of this analysis, it is not detected at what times these factors intervene in the different entrepreneurship phases. The final objective of this doctoral thesis is to analyze how certain combinations of leadership factors impact the different stages of female entrepreneurs' activity in both the launching and start-up phases, and also in the / Aparisi Torrijo, S. Blockchain for Sustainable Supply Chain Management: Trends and Ways Forward

Sahoo, S., Kumar, S., Sivarajah, Uthayasankar, Lim, W.M., Westland, J.C., Kumar, A. 2022 April 1929 (has links)
Yes / Blockchain operates on a highly secured framework, and its decentralized consensus has benefits for supply chain sustainability. Scholars have recognized the growing importance of sustainability in supply chains and studied the potential of blockchain for sustainable supply chain management. However, no study has taken stock of high-quality research in this area. To address this gap, this paper aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of high-quality research on blockchain for sustainable supply chain management. To do so, this paper conducts a systematic literature review using a bibliometric analysis of 146 high-quality articles on blockchain for sustainable supply chain management that have been published in journals ranked “A*”, “A”, and “B” by the Australian Business Deans Council and retrieved from the Scopus database. In doing so, this paper unpacks the most prominent journals, authors, institutions, and countries that have contributed to three major themes in the field, namely blockchain for sustainable business activities, decision support systems using blockchain, and blockchain for intelligent transportation system. This paper also reveals the use of blockchain for sustainable supply chain management across four major sectors, namely food, healthcare, manufacturing, and infrastructure, and concludes with suggestions for future research in each sector.
