Analysis of the United States' Sugar Industry

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Unrestricted Mexican exports of sugar into the U.S. is considered the most pressing issue facing the U.S. sugar industry. The goal of this dissertation is to analyze the trade of sugar between Mexico and the U.S. as well as analyze additional primary issues confronting the U.S. sugar industry. Chapters 1 and 2 provide an introduction to the U.S. sugar industry. Chapters 3 through 6 develop trade models which analyze sugar trade between Mexico and the U.S. The trade models estimate how NAFTA, USDA sugar forecast errors and Mexican ownership of twenty percent of the Mexican sugar industry each impact U.S. producer surplus and Mexican welfare. Results validate that U.S. producer surplus and in some instances Mexican welfare were decreased by full implementation of NAFTA. U.S. producer surplus and Mexican welfare were decreased due to USDA sugar production forecasting errors. U.S. producer surplus would be increased if the Mexican government did not own twenty percent of Mexican sugar production. Using an online choice experiment, Chapter 7 assesses U.S. consumers' preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for imported and genetically modified (GM) labeled sugar and sugar in soft drinks. Results indicate that consumers prefer bags of sugar and soft drinks labeled as "Not GM". Furthermore, consumers prefer sugar from Canada and the U.S. over sugar from Mexico, Brazil and the Philippines. Evidence is also provided that participants are more likely to choose actual products in the choice set rather than the "none of these" options when controlling for hypothetical bias by using consequentiality techniques. A non-hypothetical experimental auction was used in Chapter 8 to determine consumers' WTP for soft drinks labeled with sweetener and calorie information and analyzed the role of taste panels in an experimental auction. Results indicate that sugar is consumers' most preferred sweetener and calorie labeling is ineffective at influencing consumers to choose healthier soft drinks. Including taste in an experimental auction caused significant reductions in consumers' WTP for all soft drinks. Chapter 9 concludes by summarizing the results of this dissertation and discussing the future challenges facing the U.S. sugar industry. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Business Administration 2014

Abstract: The main objective of this work is to investigate the musical style in jazz through the identification of vertical structures found in the work of one of the great exponents of modern jazz, pianist Bill Evans. We demonstrated the way Evans distributed the pitches spatially in his improvisations through the analysis of six transcriptions of recordings made in several moments of his career. Through these transcriptions we tried to establish specific characteristics, coherent and peculiar to his musical style. The vertical structures were identified, evaluated and classified through a particular and objective methodology that used computer resources as note information ("note number") extracted from Midi files and electronic spreadsheets for organizing the data. The results of this research were, finally, confronted with analyses that other researchers did previously through more traditional techniques. The systemization of this knowledge was shown essential as a tool that seeks to the understanding of a certain artist's ¿modus pensandi¿. It can be inserted in wider research contexts for the perception of musical organizations in more complete ways / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes

"Was zieht man, wenn man einen Wechsel zieht?" Zum Ursprung von frz. tirer une lettre de change sur qqn

Rainer, Franz 11 June 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The article explains the origin of the French expression tirer une lettre de change, which is opaque for present-day speakers. Originally, it was the money that was drawn (home) by means of a bill of exchange, but already in the second half of the 16th century the verb tirer "to draw" could also take as a direct object the bill itself, thereby obscuring the original meaning.

Le contrat de transport maritime de marchandise sous connaissement contentieux France-Algérie / The contract of the carriage of goods by sea under bill of lading, litigation France-Algeria

Saou Boukhari, Rym 26 April 2017 (has links)
In the last decades, the International maritime transport has been developed on a large scale. Several international agreements have been concluded in purpose of an unification of the rules governing maritime transport agreements, resulting in a complexity which sometimes raises doubts. However, as in the international private law, the international maritime law is, according to the legislation applied to it, interpreted differently according to country. This difference of interpretation is corning from significant disparities in the decisions of the different countries, particularly about the inserted clauses in the bill of lading. Furthermore, the containerization has Advantages in terms of safety and speed of loading and unloading, it presents difficulties regarding the false declarations and the settlement of demurrage, that they are facing, a lack of resources remains between the Algerian and French ports. All these problems, affects mostly the shipping carrier or the consignee of the goods and which are not fully covered by the current agreements in force. These texts were aimed standardization of the international regime of maritime transport of lading contract, are still not achieving the desired harmonization. This thesis aims to criticize in a constructive perspective of the international legal regime of the maritime transport contract of goods under bill of lading and litigation that creates especially regarding transport to and from Algeria.

A Qualitative Study of Veteran Students' Perspectives of their Academic Experiences

Smith, Beatrice L. 28 March 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe and explain Veteran students’ perspectives on academic success as they enter or reenter the university setting. Recent research applied to Veteran students has focused on social integration and to a lesser extent on academic integration and student success. For this qualitative study grounded in social constructivism, the primary method of data collection was the recording, transcription, and analysis of oral interviews with 11 Veteran students. The findings were aligned to the theoretical framework which was adapted from Tinto’s Conditions for Student Success (2012). The results contribute to the current body of scholarly literature that highlights positive attributes that Veteran students possess including leadership skills, maturity, and acquired skills related to global and cultural awareness, and motivation. Other findings include the effectiveness of having specific programming efforts for Veteran students. As for research implications for practice, the results of this study suggest that Veteran students are not necessarily familiar with support services offered. They prefer face-to-face program delivery and may need assistance with meeting University requirements such as providing immunization records, establishing in-state residency, providing sufficient documentation for receiving support services, and options if benefits eligibility run out prior to graduation. Results also reaffirm that colleges and universities need to continue to develop and improve conditions that are known to promote student success for Veteran students.
