Brooklyn Bridge - city hall: rethinking the New York subway station

Goodwill, Clifford 26 August 2013 (has links)
As subway ridership around the world increases the typology has an opportunity to play an increasingly important role in the daily routine of urban dwellers. Underground spaces pose unique psychological and physiological stresses on occupants; therefore, an opportunity exists to rethink the subway station interior to respond to experiential and existential conditions of the traveler. This practicum aims to address these issues by redesigning an existing subway station that responds to convergence of picnolepsy, non-place, and biophilic design methodologies. Project goals include a design that focuses on experiential and emotional qualities to create a more exciting and comfortable space without impeding existing efficiencies.

A growing and connected future: exposing youth to nature through education

Norris, Rebecca 10 September 2013 (has links)
Our Human connection to the Earth and its living species has become withdrawn from our daily lifestyles and has been taken for granted over the passing years with ever-increasing technological advancements. This so-called technological advancement has provided conveniences, which have pulled people indoors and drawn them to the computer resulting in an unhealthy lifestyle. Christopher Brandlin (2011) discussed the variety of ways human health has been affected by technology. A few of the effects noted by Brandlin were obesity, lack of Vitamin D, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Through activity, outdoor interaction, and the development of an understanding of our critical relationship to other living species, physical and psychological health can be improved. Many of today’s youth have lacked a physically active and outdoor interactive lifestyle due to the technological gadgets they have at their fingertips. A Growing and Connected Future: Exposing Youth to Nature Through Education is a design practicum that poses the following question: Using an open space network, how can the community, specifically High School youth, be integrated into a healthy lifestyle, and enrich Dryden High School’s outdoor programs? To address this question, this document has included an overview of the Biophilia Hypothesis and the health benefits that arise from the practice of this concept. Learning styles have been broken down to specific gender needs that influenced aspects of the proposed design. Dryden High School’s outdoor programs have been addressed and proposals were made to expand this area of the curriculum. Lastly, examples of successful active transportation routes were examined and incorporated into Dryden’s existing trail system. The addressed information influenced design decisions that will increase exposure to the outdoors through activity and knowledge resulting in Biophilia values that increase physical and psychological health.

Body+Nature+Space: the influence of media and technology

Zelickson, Michelle 08 April 2011 (has links)
The emergence of technology in its many forms has intercepted the connection that the natural body once had with spatial experiences. These tangible interactions between the body and space have been replaced with technology causing the body to become de-valued and disconnected from itself and the surrounding environment. This disconnect between the body and space is felt by many people, however, the effect is compounded in women suffering from eating disorders because of a pre-existing disconnect with the body. Eating disorders are becoming much more prevalent in society. According to Health Canada,1-2% of women between the ages of 15 and 25 have anorexia, 3-5 % have bulimia, with 10-20% eventually dying of complications despite interventions (Health Canada). While many of these women will enter the recovery phase from the disorder, relapse will occur with approximately 1/3 of the women (Zerbe, 17). There are many centres that focus on the treatment of eating disorders while few focus on the aftercare that is crucial to prevent relapse. This design project will attempt to create a wellness centre focused on awareness, education and prevention of eating disorders through a strengthened connection with nature. The exploration of biophilic concepts, which are interactions with nature will foster the connection between the body and space re-developing and sustaining a body awareness that has become obsolete to the technical body in this modern world.

A skincare servicescape for Margaret Roberts : biomimicry and biophilia as a model and mentor for design

Rademeyer, Leani January 2016 (has links)
The ever-increasing nature of consumer demands has forced retailers to adopt 'added value' strategies to ensure their competitive edge in the market. Branding is considered a market differentiator, but alone is not enough to convince consumers to make a purchase. Consumers want more. Trends in the contemporary retail industry show that retail sustainability and retail experience design are two of the most successful added value strategies employed. This brings forth the issue of the retail sector's resource intensive and wasteful nature. Natural resources are used to produce everything from products and packaging to the physical retail space including the architectural structure, interior finishes and fittings, all for it to be demolished and discarded as waste at the end of its life cycle. This dissertation explores the value of nature as a model and mentor in the realm of retail design, particularly through application of Biomimetic and Biophilic design theories. Biomimicry is used as a design tool for developing a sustainable retail servicescape that emulates nature's resource efficient and zero-waste principles. Biophilic design strategies are employed towards the development of an in-store retail experience inspired by nature. Margaret Roberts; a well renowned South African herbalist - specialising in the art of healing with medicinal herbs, is the 'client' for this study. The proposed design intervention is the creation of a skincare servicescape for Margaret Roberts that integrates Biomimicry and Biophilia as an added value strategy. / Mini Dissertation (MInt (Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Architecture / MInt (Prof) / Unrestricted

The main concern of this research is to understand the topobiophilia manifestations that occur in the interaction between visitors and rural landscape. They were studied on three farms located in Itu city, São Paulo State - Fazenda do Chocolate, Camping e Pousada Fazenda das Pedras and Fazenda Pirahy. Two questions permeated its development : Is there a bond motivating people to be in contact with areas considered as natural ones, particularly, rural settings? If there is, how to comprehend it? For that, qualitative research and category analysis were accomplished, pointing out that the reasons for choosing rural landscapes are full of topophilia - affective bond between people and physical settings, and biophilia - emotional affectiveness innate to human beings towards the other species. This research also concludes that memes - basic unit for human cultural multiplication - related to rural setting as something mythical and natural had success as replicants on human behavior towars country areas.
