Tillberg, Jeanette, Sträng, Jennie January 2010 (has links)
To induce labour means trying to manipulate labour to start in order to achieve vaginal childbirth. A propriedade de Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás / Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property

Grando, Thiago 20 May 2016 (has links)
We study the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators, (BP BP ), defined between Banach spaces. Our goal was to look for pairs of Banach spaces satisfying the BP BP . We L i prove that if the pair of real Banach spaces (c 0 ( i=1 ` 2 ) , Y ) satisfy BP BP , where Y is a strictly convex Banach space, then Y is an uniformly convex space. In the study of BP BP , it appears other properties, such the Approximate hyperplane series property for Banach spaces. In this sense, we proved that if (K, (X t ) tK , Z) is function module space, then Z satisfies AHSP if X t has the AHSP for all t K. Moreover, under certain conditions we proved the reciprocal of this result. As a consequence, a Banach space X has the AHSP if, and only if, C 0 (L, X) has the AHSP , for every non-empty locally compact Hausdorff space L. Concomitantly to the study of BP BP , we study techniques of characterization of com- pact sets of c 0 . With these techniques, we characterize the compact sets of the spaces L i c 0 i=1 ` p , 1 p and the predual of Lorentz sequence space d (w, 1).

Propriedade de Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás / Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property

Fraga, Juliane Trianon 21 February 2019 (has links)
The main purpose of this work is to study certain properties of pairs of Banach spaces in a way that satisfies the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators (BPBp), following the historical evolution of the subject. Firstly we present proofs of the Bishop-Phelps and Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorems, and then proceed to study versions of these results for operators, of which we emphasize the second one. To this purpose, we define the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators, introduced by Acosta et al. in [AAGM08], and present two results of this paper, which state that if X and Y are finite-dimensional Banach spaces, then (X,Y) satisfies BPBp, and that if the Banach space Y has the property beta of Lindenstrauss, then (X,Y) satisfies BPBp for every Banach space X. Next we study paper [AGKM17], which presents a class of Banach spaces Y such that (c0,Y) satisfies BPBp, and shows that although this class contains the uniformly rotund spaces and those satisfying property beta, there are other examples of spaces in it.

Justice in Augustine's City of God

Daniels, Amy Lydia 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis outlines Augustine’s thought on justice as articulated in The City of God: against the Pagans. The purpose of the study was to investigate the place and role of his convictions about justice in his apologetic project. To this end, Books 19-22 of The City of God were read within the historical, religious and ideological contexts of Augustine’s day. Aspects deemed relevant to the stated goals of the thesis and which were therefore surveyed, were pagan-Christian relations and Neo-Platonism in the fifth century; the sacking of Rome in AD 410, a perceived injustice which occasioned rampant calumnies against the Christians and questions regarding the justice of God; secular jurisprudence and legal practice, with a focus on the role of bishops in dispensing justice; biblical perspectives on justice. A reading of Books 19-22 of the City of God was then done, in which it was found that justice was viewed by Augustine as subordinate to, but straining toward the Supreme Good, identified as peace. Moreover, it was shown that Augustine’s perspective on justice is inextricably linked with his eschatological convictions. These are that God is set to establish an eternal City, composed of those who, throughout history, have pledged allegiance to Him. That city is characterised by peace and justice, as determined by God. Any peace or manifestation of justice in the present age was shown to flow from humankind’s predisposition toward self-love (egotism). As such, they are presented by Augustine as a poor reflection of the perfect peace and justice that will be established by God. With regard to Augustine’s defence of the Christian faith, it was found that he employs a model of argumentation which takes as its point of departure the worldviews of his opponents, showing up cracks in their thinking. He then presents his own perspective as the better alternative. The juxtaposition of the current age, fraught with injustice and chaos, against the eternal peace and justice to be established by God, were shown to be important selling-points for Augustine. For him, life in the eternal City of God was an irresistible offer, which he sought to hold out to his opponents.

The political works of John Lesley, Bishop of Ross (1527-96)

Beckett, Margaret J. January 2002 (has links)
John Lesley saw himself as a humanist, devoted to the common weal and especially to his Queen; to others he was `a busie man', `seed-man of all treasons'. Educated in the Renaissance Scotland of James V and trained in France for a career in the law and the Church, he was `a great doer' with Queen Mary and, briefly, at the heart of government in Scotland, as Lord of Session, Bishop and trusted Counsellor. In 1568 his priorities were transformed. Charged with defending Mary's innocence at York and her interests at the court of Elizabeth, he failed to secure her rehabilitation in Scotland or her release from England. What he could not do in court by his pleading he attempted to do, covertly, by his pen, in an attempt to convince the English nobility and the Spanish King that Mary was Elizabeth's natural heir, in no way disqualified by her own character and conduct or her gender or by English laws of succession. These three topics and Lesley's handling of them are discussed in Chapters Two to Four. Chapter One uses his own, often mutually contradictory, accounts of these years to indicate the circumstances in which his polemic, and the Histories discussed in Chapter Six, were composed. Chapter Five argues that A Treatise of Treasons should not be ascribed to him. In the past century, Lesley has attracted little notice, usually overshadowed by stronger or more flamboyant characters; from his writings, Mary's `learned and most faithful servant' can appear to have the consistency of a chameleon. This study is concerned with his political works, in Latin, Scots and English; it tries to explain those discrepancies which it cannot reconcile, and to examine Lesley's ideas, and their influence, on political issues which included resistance, union with England and the rights of women.

Origins and development of the Church of St Cuthbert, 635-1153, with special reference to Durham in the period circa 1071-1153

Aird, William Morton January 1991 (has links)
In the late eleventh century, the episcopal Church of St Cuthbert at Durham was one of the most powerful institutions in the North of England. Its power was derived from its possession of extensive landed estates which had been acquired since the late seventh century. Whereas the other ecclesiastical corporations of early Northumbria had succumbed to the successive waves of Scandinavian invasions, the Church of St Cuthbert had established a significant franchise and had augmented its landholding. The leaders of the Church were willing to lend their support to any secular ruler who would guarantee the safety of its possessions. The first Norman appointee to the bishopric, Walcher, was in a precarious position relying heavily upon the local Northumbrian aristocracy for his administration. Factionalism within Walcher's regime brought about the Bishop's murder at Gateshead in 1080. This incident forced William I to reconsider his policy in the North-East of England and he appointed William of St Calais to the bishopric and Robert de Mowbray to the earldom of Northumbria. Bishop William launched an attack on the position of the members of the pre-Conquest Congregatio sancti Cuthberti by introducing a Convent of Benedictine monks to Durham in 1083. A re-examination of the early twelfth-century chronicle of Symeon, who was precentor at Durham, challenges the widely held view that there was a complete change in the personnel serving St Cuthbert's shrine in 1083. It is argued that a significant number of the Congregation entered the Convent thus maintaining a strong local presence at the shrine. The Benedictine Convent served as the cathedral chapter and its relationship with its nominal Abbot, the Bishop, is surveyed for the period, 1083 to 1153. During the pontificate of William of St Calais, the Convent enjoyed a privileged status within the see. However, the elevation of Rannulf Flambard to the bishopric marked the beginning of conflict between the two institutions. The monks sought a definition. of their franchise and this prompted them to confect a series of forged foundation charters which multiplied during the pontificate of Hugh du Puiset. The establishment of a French baronage within the Patrimony of St Cuthbert strengthened the Norman presence in the region, although a number of native families maintained their position. The surviving evidence suggests that the feudal structure of Durham was largely the work of Bishop Rannulf. Finally, the relationship between the Church of St Cuthbert and Scotland has been considered and it is argued that, in this period, the Bishop of Durham did not take an active role in the defence of the North of England. The Convent received grants of land from the Scots kings, most notably the church of Coldingham. As it had done between its foundation and the late eleventh century, the Church of St Cuthbert survived weathering the Norman Conquest and thereby ensuring that the cult of St Cuthbert at Durham prospered. By the end of the twelfth century it was rivalled only by that of Thomas Becket.
