The Art of the Political Metaphor : Examining Boris Johnson's use of conceptual metaphors in a speech on Brexit / Den politiska metaforen som hantverk : En undersökning av Boris Johnsons användning av konceptuella metaforer i ett tal om Brexit

Eriksson, Rickard January 2022 (has links)
As the 2016 Brexit referendum was an election largely decided by the use of language, there was merit in examining how the Leave campaign had managed to be successful. Therefore, this study asks how one of the leave campaign's main figure heads, Boris Johnson, used metaphors to frame the relationship between Britain and the EU. In addition, the ascribed conceptual role of each party was investigated. To determine this, the metaphorical framing in a pivotal speech was examined by using conceptual metaphor theory. Firstly, several linguistic metaphors were identified by using an established metaphor identification process. After careful analysis, two separate patterns in these metaphors were found and subsequently, suitable conceptual metaphors were suggested. The one relating to the relationship between Britain and the EU was proposed as AUTONOMY IS FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT. In other words, there were several linguistic metaphors exhibiting the conceptual pattern that the EU restricted Britain's freedom of movement and that this described the more abstract notion of Britain's lack of autonomy. Thus, in his speech, Boris Johnson conveyed the idea that there was an imbalance of power weighted in favour of the EU. The second conceptual metaphor, which denotes the role of the EU, was proposed as THE EU IS A MACHINE. This implies that the EU is an emotionless, non-sentient and thoughtless operation that does not inspire warmth or a sense of belonging. This pattern was not as solid as the restriction of movement pattern but other, corroborating, evidence was found. Finally, the role of Britain in the speech was not referred to using metaphors but by personal pronouns, first-person plural. This achieves the opposite effect to the conceptual metaphor THE EU IS A MACHINE. Hence, by repeatedly using we and us when referencing Britain, Boris Johnson humanises the country as he tries to foster a group feeling, a sense of togetherness. These findings highlight how politicians use the tools of linguistics to influence the electorate. Britain's unexpected exit out of the European Union had a huge impact on millions of people so it is crucial to understand how the Leave campaign had managed to swing the vote in their favour. This study shines a light on some of the techniques used to win the referendum.

The Effects of a Nobel Prize : How Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize in Literature Contributed to Disseminating his Authorship

Petersson, Isak January 2014 (has links)
This study explores and sheds light upon the relations between Russian author Boris Pasternak’s Nobel Prize in Literature (1958) and the subsequent proliferation of his authorship. The study’s aim is partly to define the Nobel Prize and its role as a distributor of culture, but also to problematize the complex nature of cultural prizes and their influence over cultural production. In order to do this two areas have been analysed: Pasternak’s publication in Swedish and his occurrence in Swedish daily press between 1953–2013.   The analysis exemplifies the strong consecrating power of the Nobel prize, as well as its ability to, in a longer perspective, solidify an author into a literary canon. In line with English’s theory on how cultural prizes have come to serve as forums for capital intraconversion, it is also evident in Pasternak’s example how several of the involved parties have capitalized on the prize by trading cultural, economic and medial capital. Furthermore, the analysis concretizes how the cultural prize apparatus produces and reinforces cultural value, and consequently not only influences the cultural scene, but also has the potential to sway public political opinion.

Alien Places in Late Soviet Science Fiction : The "Unexpected Encounters" of Arkady and Boris Strugatsky as Novels and Films

Cederlöf, Henriette January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation deals with how science fiction reflects the shift in cultural paradigms that occurred in the Soviet Union between the 1960s and the 1970s. Interest was displaced from the rational to the irrational, from a scientific-technologically oriented optimism about the future to art, religion, philosophy and metaphysics. Concomitant with this shift in interests was a shift from the future to an elsewhere or, reformulated in exclusively spatial terms, from utopia to heterotopia. The dissertation consists of an analysis of three novels by the Strugatsky brothers (Arkady, 1925-1991 and Boris 1933-2012): Inspector Glebsky’s Puzzle (Otel’ U pogibšego al’pinista, 1970), The Kid (Malyš, 1971) and Roadside Picnic (Piknik na obočine, 1972) and two films Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel (Hukkunud alpinisti hotell/ Otel’ U pogibšego al’pinista, Kromanov, 1979) and Stalker (Tarkovsky, 1980).  The three novels, allegedly treatments of the theme of contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence, were intended to be published in one volume with the title Unexpected Encounters. The films are based on two of the novels. In the novels an earlier Marxist utopia has given way to a considerably more ambiguous heterotopia, largely envisioned as versions of the West. An indication of how the authors here seem to look back towards history rather than forward towards the future is to be found in the persistent strain of literary Gothic that runs through the novels. This particular trait resurfaces in the films as well.  The films reflect how tendencies only discernable in the novels have developed throughout the decade, such as the budding Soviet consumer culture and the religious sensibilities of the artistic community.

Tarquinio, Daniel Junqueira January 2012 (has links)
This work investigates a substantial part of Villa-Lobos’ work for piano, the 16 Cirandas. It proposes analytical and interpretive conceptions to the performance of each musical piece. Searching for principles that would encompass the semantics and syntax expressed in the act of musical performance, B. Asafiev’s Intonation Theory and Musical Form as Process was used as the basis for analysis, being presented and contextualized with the analytical theories of the 20th century. In each analytical conception of the pieces, entitled here as intonation analyses, the following items were treated as a complex: structuring of the musical material; sound flow within time manifested through the Asafie’s concepts of energy, impulse to the musical movement, musical movement and its conclusion; functions of simultaneous and successive sound elements and sets; semantic and syntactic aspects immanent and emanating of musical structures; pianistic language of Villa-Lobos; aspects of the performing process such as fingering, finger, hand and arm movements. Musical performance, integrated to the Theory of Intonation, is understood as intonation of a work of music, thus, manifestation of sound originated in the hands and voice of the interpreters, which communicates their psychological/intellectual/emotional/semantic state in a historical and cultural context. According to Asafiev’s understanding, music is the “art of intoned meaning”. Villa-Lobos, in touch with his contemporaneity, intones in his Cirandas a cultural universe through historically crystallized intonations of the Brazilian social consciousness.

Guerra em surdina : a ficção de Boris Schnaiderman entre a política e a poética / Hidden War: The fiction of Boris Schnaiderman between the political and poetic

Assis, Ivone Gomes de 25 February 2014 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais / Hidden War: the fiction of Boris Schnaiderman between the political and poetic aims to present the political features of an era and Boris Schnaiderman´s poetics, through his prose, along 220 pages in 19 chapters of Hidden War, which narrates, in the literary event, the experience of war. Hidden War is a work of fiction that comprises a lot of memory snippets from its author, in The Second World War and in the geographic space of Brazil and Italy. The narrative, which begins in 1944, when some Brazilians were summoned to war, has its denouement in Italy and it is finalized with the regress of soldiers to Brazil after defeating Hitler in Germany. This dissertation is organized in 3 chapters, as follows: Boris Schnaiderman an officer of words, in which themes concerning the researched author will be addressed; 2. Literature and War; 3. From wreckage to History, the fiction used to analyze the researched literary work. The pre and post textual context are included; and the post textual aspects are the conclusion and references. Boris Schnaiderman is one of the most cited and well-known translators of Russian in Brazil however his work is still underexplored in the academic universe, especially in the field of Literature. The researches that I found on my research, which refer this work, Hidden War, are, mostly, related to the field of History, and none of them is exclusively about this work itself, fact that does not make it impossible that some of his other work may have not been reached. A literatura e a guerra; 3.

Elasticity in three compositions with flute by Boris Blacher

Taher, Cecilia 01 July 2009 (has links)
This thesis proposes a new concept of form for Boris Blacher's Divertimento for Woodwinds, Duet for Flute and Piano, and Quintet for Flute, Oboe, Violin, Viola, and Violoncello. In 1950, Blacher began to use systematically varying metric units to provide logic to the apparently arbitrary rhythm of modern music. This practice led the few scholars who have studied his compositions to concentrate on the mathematical organization of metrical units, underestimating other musical elements. This dissertation is based on the idea that it is not the mere disposition of meters, but mostly the interaction between them and other musical elements that makes the peculiar durational scheme audible, thus perceptually relevant. Following this, the technique of expansion and contraction that becomes evident in the organization of the meters is also present in the disposition of durations at other hierarchical levels and in the pitch structure. Furthermore, the mathematical metrical scheme is the foundation for a deeper universe of systematic organization. Blacher's techniques provide a unique sense of movement to his compositions, the aural effect of an "elastically developing music." In Duet and Quintet, this idea is also applied in simultaneity to the registral disposition of pitches and textural development, suggesting vertical elasticity. As a result, Blacher's late compositions suggest a replacement of the traditional concepts of form and texture with a new idea of constantly moving, elastic shape. The methodological approach of this thesis is exclusively analytical and technical, with emphasis on durational and pitch organization, form, texture, and the interaction among these aspects. The individual and comparative analysis of the three compositions reveals a consistent conception of the musical space that emphasizes its bi-dimensional quality. In the Divertimento, the unitary conception of the vertical and horizontal construction is mainly reflected in the bi-dimensional treatment of interval classes that provides coherence to the motivic structure. In Duet and Quintet, this mere idea of consistent organization of the musical materials in the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the total space becomes a unique principle of formal definition, the elastic development of the musical content itself.
