Assessing the effectiveness of direct marketing and digital communication as integrated marketing communication strategies : a case study of the University of Limpopo student recruitment programme

Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / The purpose of this study was to assess the Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) strategies used by the University of Limpopo’s Marketing and Communication, Student Recruitment division. The study focuses on the use of IMC strategies including direct marketing, which includes marketing through branding, face- to -face interaction with customers and other elements including advertising. The other aspect of the marketing strategy is digital communication, which includes social media and web marketing that the university uses to market themselves to their prospective students. The use of marketing strategies by higher institutions of learning was addressed in the literature review and the importance of implementing the strategies was also discussed. The study focused further on direct marketing and digital communication strategies following low student number enrolments in 2016, especially in the faculties of Science and Agriculture, as well as in Management and Law. The study examined the way in which the university presents and sells itself, promotes its services and maintains the relationship between students, both international and domestic. In this work, IMC strategies were explained and outlined for understanding, which allows for proper implementation of the strategies. The use of General Systems Theory (GST) served as a theoretical outline for this study to highlight the importance of marketing strategies that operate in a systematic way. The use of GST also advocated for the implementation of marketing strategies as a system. The theory was able to link both IMC strategies and the organisation of higher learning, wherein IMC is a system itself. There are elements of IMC that work together to create a system in an organisation. GST supports education as it was stated that educational institutions deal with marketing strategies which, need to be approached in a systematic way (Buckey, 1968). Institutions of higher learning are composed of many systems, which should not be viewed as individual, separate units, but as contributing parts to the effective functioning of the whole marketing strategy. The research design utilised grounded theory for philosophical methodological underpinning. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews taken from nine, (9) high school leaners from Zimbabwe and South Africa. International high v school participants were attending an exhibition in different places in Zimbabwe, such as Harare (Gateway High School). In South Africa, data was collected from different areas, such as Capricorn, Vhembe, Mopanae and Blouberg in Limpopo province. Branding and the use of social media was also a concern. Most participants concluded that the university needs to upgrade its marketing strategies and focus more on the digital communication as teenagers spend time on their digital devices, which can be helpful in accessing the information they need.

Na základě teoretických poznatků, metodiky dle Ko Floora a konceptu Brand Prismu je zhodnocena stávající situace studijního oboru. Zároveň jsou provedeny analýzy konkurentů a požadavků zákazníků, společně s analýzou odvětví k určení pozice značky studijního oboru na trhu. Na základě výsledků ze všech provedených analýz jsou následně stanoveny návrhy řešení konceptu značky na podporu rozvoje konkurenceschopnosti studijního oboru.

Las MiPymes peruanas son un grupo de empresas que conforman gran parte de la actividad económica del país, siendo el subsector confecciones el que ha logrado un crecimiento en general en los últimos años. Sin embargo, en el grupo de exportaciones de ropa de algodón para bebés, ha tenido una variación en los últimos 5 años, desde el año 2016 al 2020, ya que sus exportaciones no se han mantenido constantes; es decir, han tenido un crecimiento y decrecimiento cada año, lo cual genera una interrogante del motivo de esta variación pese a que de manera general el subsector de confecciones se mantiene sólida en crecimiento. Para ello, se realizó la presente investigación con la finalidad de conocer si los componentes de posicionamiento de marca, canal de distribución, diferenciación de producto y financiamiento pre – embarque actúan como limitadores de las MiPymes exportadoras de la región Lima de la partida 6209.20.0000 en su proceso de internacionalización al mercado de Estados Unidos en el periodo 2016 – 2020. En la presente investigación se ha utilizado una metodología de enfoque cualitativo basada en la recopilación de antecedentes nacional e internacional junto a entrevistas semiestructuradas a profundidad realizadas a expertos de tema y empresas MiPymes del subsector confecciones de ropa de algodón para bebés con la finalidad de obtener información sobre las limitantes. Obteniendo como resultado, que los componentes de posicionamiento de marca, diferenciación de producto y financiamiento pre – embarque son limitadores que influye negativamente en la competitividad de las MiPymes peruanas exportadora de ropa de algodón para bebés de la partida 6209.20.0000 del periodo 2016 – 2020. Mientras que el componente de canal de distribución no influye en la competitividad de las MiPymes de estudio. Asimismo, con la información recaba se hicieron hallazgos como la influencia positiva de apoyarse en la Marca Perú para lograr internacionalizarse, el uso de los canales digitales para lograr posicionarse en el mercado exterior, la importancia de brindar un servicio personalizado para lograr diferenciarse de la competencia y la importancia de contar con certificaciones para diferenciar el producto. / Peruvian MSMEs are a group of companies that make up a large part of the country's economic activity, with the apparel subsector being the one that has achieved growth in general in recent years. However, in the group of exports of cotton clothing for babies, it has had a variation in the last 5 years, from 2016 to 2020, since its exports have not remained constant; that is to say, they have had a growth and decrease every year, which raises a question of the reason for this variation despite the fact that in general the apparel subsector remains solid in growth. For this, the present investigation was carried out in order to know if the components of brand positioning, distribution channel, product differentiation and pre-shipment financing act as limiters of the exporting MSMEs of the Lima region of heading 6209.20.0000 in its process of internationalization to the United States market in the period 2016 – 2020. In this research, a qualitative approach methodology based on the collection of national and international antecedents has been used together with in-depth semi – structured interviews carried out with subject experts and MSMEs in the subsector of cotton clothing for babies in order to obtain information on the limitations. Obtaining as a result, that the components of brand positioning, product differentiation and pre-shipment financing are limiting that negatively influences the competitiveness of Peruvian MSMEs exporting cotton clothing for babies of heading 6209.20.0000 for the period 2016 – 2020. While the distribution channel component does not influence the competitiveness of the study MSMEs. There are major challenges for Chinese firms that may jeopardise the creation of credibility when establishing in the Swedish market. It is therefore important for Chinese firms to implement efficient international branding strategies that contribute to the formation of credibility for Chinese companies. International branding strategies of brand positioning, brand awareness and brand image constitute a foundation that Chinese brands can adopt to obtain credibility among Swedish consumers. Abductive research in accordance with the topic of study has been conducted through qualitative means. Primary data collection through semi-structured interviews with participants contributed to the investigation of the theoretical framework presented in the second chapter: Literature Review, and analysed in chapter five: Analysis. Through the analysis of the data, along with the presented prerequisite knowledge, the authors have been able to identify international branding strategies Chinese firms can implement to gain credibility. The thesis presents a conclusion of positioning a brand in accordance with Westernisation, price setting, presenting the country of origin, and beneficial attributes, while establishing familiarity through brand awareness and finally, conveying trustworthiness and high quality through the brand image to gain credibility.

En un mercado tan competitivo como el actual, ser solamente una marca no es suficiente para destacar ante los demás. Es por ello que cada vez más marcas buscan convertirse en lovemarks y conseguir un buen posicionamiento en la mente del consumidor, esto se logra desarrollando una relación con sus consumidores hasta el punto de generar brand love. El brand love de una marca es importante para el proceso de generar lovemarks, para lograrlo es necesario desarrollar una experiencia de marca e imagen de marca positivas ante el consumidor. El objetivo del estudio presentado a continuación consiste en el análisis de la relación entre el brand image, brand experience y brand love con respecto a las marcas deportivas. Las marcas deportivas cuentan con una facilidad superior a otros rubros para la obtención de lovemarks, debido a que una marca deportiva suele representar a deportistas o grupos deportivos con gran apego emocional. Se requiere un estudio cuantitativo que incluirá a 400 personas las cuales usan productos de marcas deportivas y se sienten representadas por ellas. / In today's competitive market, being just a brand is not enough to stand out from the rest. That is why more and more brands seek to become lovemarks and achieve a good positioning in the consumer's mind, this is achieved by developing a relationship with their consumers to the point of generating brand love. The brand love of a brand is important for the process of generating lovemarks, to achieve this it is necessary to develop a positive brand experience and brand image to the consumer. This paper analyze the relationship between brand image, brand experience and brand love with respect to sports brands. Sports brands have a higher facility to obtain lovemarks than other categories, due to the fact that a sports brand usually represents sportsmen or sports groups with great emotional attachment. Actualmente, las marcas han saturado diversos medios de comunicación a través de anuncios publicitarios reiterativos que han generado un rechazo de los potenciales consumidores. Ante esta problemática, tanto las marcas como las agencias de publicidad han optado por utilizar diferentes estrategias para generar posicionamiento. Entre estas, el humor es uno de los principales recursos para conectar con las personas y generar un compromiso con ellas. En este contexto, nuestro objetivo principal es analizar cómo el humor popular peruano en la publicidad ayuda al posicionamiento de las marcas de telefonía en un público de estudiantes de ingeniería industrial entre 18 y 24 años de la PUCP. Caso: Yungay-Entel. Nuestra metodología es cualitativa, debido a que la información recolectada es en base a los comportamientos y actitudes de los entrevistado con respecto al tema analizado. Por un lado, realizaremos entrevistas semiestructuradas y encuestas a nuestro público objetivo para identificar qué percepción tienen acerca de la publicidad humorística en el Perú. / At the present, brands have saturated various media through repetitive advertisements that have generated rejection from potential consumers. El desarrollo de la tecnología ha logrado que esta se implemente de forma eficiente en diversos aspectos de nuestras vidas, donde juega un rol casi vital en algunas de ellas. Dentro de esta era tecnológica, no podemos dejar pasar el boom de Internet y todo lo que trajo consigo, especialmente si deseamos enfocarnos en un público que responde a la generación millennial. Esta red fue desarrollándose a lo largo de muchos años, hasta que llegaron las conocidas redes sociales, las cuales logran tener una influencia muy importante en cuanto al consumo del público anteriormente mencionado. Los jóvenes son más vulnerables ante tales plataformas, ya que gran parte de ellos han nacido rodeados de las mismas, por lo que tienden a guiarse de estas como uno de los modelos principales a los que consultan previamente, antes de tomar una decisión de compra. Debido a esto, es que renacen los tan conocidos “Influencers”, que representan un modelo a seguir y una fuente de confianza y cercanía. Debido a la gran influencia que representan estos personajes, muchos mercados, tanto positiva como negativamente, se han visto afectados en la fluidez del consumo de los servicios y productos que ofrecen. Uno de estos rubros es el de restaurantes, los cuales dan uso a estos líderes de opinión como estrategias publicitarias para lograr captar la atención de un público altamente influenciable y lograr un posicionamiento deseado entre sus potenciales clientes. En consecuencia, el presente trabajo investiga cómo se genera un posicionamiento de marca por parte de los consumidores con el uso de los influencers como una estrategia publicitaria en el rubro de restaurantes. / The development of technology has achieved its efficient implementation in various aspects of our lives, where it plays an almost vital role in some of it. Within this technological age, we cannot pass up the Internet boom and all that it brought with it, especially if we want to focus on an audience that responds to the millennial generation. This network was developed over many years, until the well-known social networks arrived, which manage to have a very important influence in terms of the consumption of the aforementioned public. Young people are more vulnerable to such platforms, since a large part of them were born surrounded by them, so they tend to be guided by these as one of the main models they consult previously, before making a purchase decision. Because of this, the well-known "Influencers" are reborn, representing a role model and a source of trust and closeness. Due to the great influence that these characters represent, many markets, both positively and negatively, have been affected in the fluidity of consumption of the services and products they offer. One of these areas is restaurants, which use these opinion leaders as advertising strategies to attract the attention of a highly influential public and achieve a desired position among their potential customers.
