Investigating the Relation Between Microcredit and Female Entrepreneurship in Lao PDR / En studie av relationen mellan mikrolån och kvinnligt entreprenörskap i Lao PDRGranath, Klara, Kling, Karin January 2018 (has links)
Even though the idea of microcredit is to stimulate entrepreneurial activities in developing countries, there is an ongoing debate whether this is achieved. Many argue that only providing credit is not enough and see a need for additional components in promoting entrepreneurial activities for the stimulation of economic growth. Moreover, the importance of including women in economic development is widely acknowledged. In Lao People's Democratic Republic where many women run their own businesses and a majority of microcredit borrowers are women, we aimed to examine the relation between microcredit and female entrepreneurship. This was accomplished by conducting semi-structured interviews with 13 Laotian female microcredit borrowers running businesses, as well as interviews with seven representatives from organizations related to microcredit and female entrepreneurship. To understand the female entrepreneurs and the environment in which they operate, we developed a model where factors related to the loan agreement, networking, motivation, gender division of labor and training were identified as important components in the context of Lao PDR. The results support the view that a credit only approach is not enough for the development of female entrepreneurship in Lao PDR.

My PhD dissertation focuses on the theory of the corporate finance that emerged between 1880 and 1929, as well as the contribution of Veblen.First, we highlight Veblen’s analytical and macroeconomic contributions to the business enterprise. He highlights a trinity credit-equity-goodwill by which we assert that he is a "pre-modern" theorist of corporate finance. His vision of goodwill allows him to draw up a theory of investment that is rooted in the affiliation of the Q-Theory. It thus offers a pioneering look at the management of an enterprise, with its analysis of the behavior of the insider and the outsider.Secondly, through an archival work and an investigation into the first corporate finance manuals, we present a reading of the emergence of this academic discipline, resulting from the practice of large companies. A first vocabulary and the first theories emerge. In addition, there is a wider debate about education in the United States and the institutionalization of business education in higher education, in which Veblen takes part.

Development Initiatives’ Impact on Women’s Empowerment : A Field Study on a Business Training and Microcredit Program in Kenya / Utvecklingsinitiativ och deras påverkan på kvinnors egenmakt : En fältstudie om ett entreprenörskaps- och mikrokreditprogram i KenyaGrafford, Josefin, Hansson, Josefin January 2020 (has links)
The primary goal of development organizations is poverty reduction, but their initiatives have in recent years also been recognized as a potential tool in empowering women and raising their status. Previous knowledge on the topic is largely based in an understanding of empowerment that seems to miss or overlook limitations and impacts of initiatives which authors with a more feminist view on empowerment address. Thus, this thesis aims to increase the understanding of women’s empowerment in relation to development initiatives. A case study focusing on women who had previously participated in the business training and microcredit program of an NGO in Nairobi, Kenya was conducted. The study shows that through development organizations’ various initiatives women can be empowered on a personal and a collective level. For instance, the women’s self-confidence has increased and they see themselves as entitled to do things on their own, such as running a business. Further, through coming together as a group they gain access to new spaces and agency to act on their collective interests. However, little evidence of women’s empowerment on a relational level is seen. The study also shows that there are economic and gender-related barriers constraining the empowerment process.

An exploration of factors that lead to failure of small businesses in the Kagiso townshipMbonyane, Boysana Lephoi 30 November 2006 (has links)
This study examines the factors appear to lead to the failure of small businesses in the Kagiso Township. The high failure rate can be partially attributed to the lack of support that the small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) receive from support institutions as well as to their own internal weaknesses. Strategies are recommended that will help small businesses be more successful.
The study was exploratory, descriptive and qualitative in nature. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data.
Results indicated that the most common causes of business failure were lack of knowledge regarding legal matters, lack of funding and a general lack of business acumen.
The study recommends that government should improve the effectiveness of its support mechanisms and that record keeping and cash flow management training is critical for SMEs. These recommendations, if applied properly, will ensure small businesses' success in Kagiso and the rest of South Africa. / Economics / M.Tech. (Business Administration)

The evaluation of the entrepreneurial seed fund programme : the case of the Cape Winelands District MunicipalityJanuary, Prudence Constance 05 December 2013 (has links)
The study aims to evaluate the Entrepreneurial Seed Fund Programme (ESFP) of the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM). This Programme aims to provide seed funding to emerging and established businesses in order to start and/or grow their businesses. The Programme provides funding through a grant-in-kind by procuring the goods and equipment that the business needs. The businesses qualifying for the funding are not solely focusing on profit-making; they are addressing social issues through business activities in their communities. The population of the study includes five successful and unsuccessful beneficiaries and a questionnaire was designed in order to determine the contributing factors to the success or failure of the business and if the objectives of the Programme was realised. In conclusion, the ESFP can be regarded as a sustainable programme which contributed to job creation and social upliftment. The ESFP should be strengthened with a small business incubation programme in order to enhance its sustainability. / Public Administration & Management / M. Tech. (Public Management)
