Measurement properties of respondent-defined rating-scales : an investigation of individual characteristics and respondent choices

It is critical for researchers to be confident of the quality of survey data. Problems with data quality often relate to measurement method design, through choices made by researchers in their creation of standardised measurement instruments. This is known to affect the way respondents interpret and respond to these instruments, and can result in substantial measurement error. Current methods for removing measurement error are post-hoc and have been shown to be problematic. This research proposes that innovations can be made through the creation of measurement methods that take respondents' individual cognitions into consideration, to reduce measurement error in survey data. Specifically, the aim of the study was to develop and test a measurement instrument capable of having respondents individualise their own rating-scales. A mixed methodology was employed. The qualitative phase provided insights that led to the development of the Individualised Rating-Scale Procedure (IRSP). This electronic measurement method was then tested in a large multi-group experimental study, where its measurement properties were compared to those of Likert-Type Rating-Scales (LTRSs). The survey included pre-validated psychometric constructs which provided a baseline for comparing the methods, as well as to explore whether certain individual characteristics are linked to respondent choices. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the survey data. Whilst no strong associations were found between individual characteristics and respondent choices, the results demonstrated that the IRSP is reliable and valid. This study has produced a dynamic measurement instrument that accommodates individual-level differences, not addressed by typical fixed rating-scales.

本篇論文論證在漢語中動詞以及文獻中所認定的形容詞(putative adjectives)之間的區分是非必要的。本文探討了文獻中區分和辨別漢語形容詞詞類的各項準則,並論證這些準則並無法全面性解釋所有傳統上被視為是形容詞的詞彙,也因此使得漢語語法更加複雜和歧異。文獻中所認定的形容詞在句法上並未呈現出形容詞的特性;相反地,它們無論是從時貌標記來看或就範疇功能(categorial function)等方面而論都與動詞一致。因此,把文獻中所認定的形容詞與動詞歸於一類將可維持漢語語法的簡單性。 此外,我們認為Chomsky (1965)以兩個正負號特徵(±N, ±V)所界定出的四個詞類(名詞、動詞、形容詞以及介係詞)並不是普遍性的(universal);意即,並非所有語言都需要同時擁有這四個詞類。功能語言學派的看法亦同,他們認為語言中最少只需要兩個詞類來執行語言功能,即動詞與名詞,因此只有這兩個詞類具有普遍性,而另兩個詞類的語意功能可藉由它們來執行。對此,我們引用了缺乏形容詞(如:韓語(cf. The criteria for identifying a distinct adjectival category have been proposed by many linguists, e.g., Zhu (1982), Yin (2003), Huang et al (2008); however, they fail to accommodate all putative adjectives as a category. A distinct adjective category requires stipulations to account for the verb-adjective distinction and thus complicates the grammar. Descriptively, putative adjectives in Mandarin Chinese do not exhibit adjectival characteristics; rather, they are unmarked predicates and thus behave similarly as verbs in terms of aspectual marking, N’-ellipsis, and reduplication. Putative adjectives should thus be conflated with verbs to maintain the simplicity of the grammar. From a typological perspective, some languages have been argued to lack adjectives (e.g., Korean (cf. Kim 2002)) and others, prepositions (e.g., Seediq (cf. Huang 1998)). Therefore, Chomsky’s (1965) four categories defined by two universal feature specifications [±N] and [±V] do not seem to be ubiquitous. Functionalist linguists also assert that only Noun and Verb are universal, for they represent the elementary and central concepts at two extremes of the world while Adjective and Preposition may not be syntactically realized and their semantic concepts are thus associated with either Noun or Verb. Finally, Chinese putative adjectives are further examined with the cross-linguistic criteria proposed in Bhat (1994). The only logical conclusion is that Mandarin Chinese does not distinguish adjectives as a distinct category.

Ekonomisk styrning för förändring : en studie av ekonomiska styrinitiativ i hälso- och sjukvården / Management control for change : a study of management control initiatives in health care

Since the end of the 1980’s  Swedish county council managers has been preoccupied with planning and implementing organisational change in order to alleviate the financial problems and to create more efficient production systems. Many of these efforts to change have implied changing the systems for management accounting and control, changes that have been inspired both by market-oriented ideologies and by the governance principles of large corporations in the private sector. Literature on manage­ment accounting and control indicates however, that management is unintentionally contributing to the creation of organisational inertia and conservatism. This contradiction is formulated as a change dilemma; ”How can managerial principles that make organizations subject to  bureaucratization and inertia be used as important strategies for organizational change?” The purpose of the study is thus to analyze the use of management control systems as organizational change strategies in health care, employing a change perspective on management control. When used as a change strategy,  management accounting and control becomes manifest as management control initiatives. Actors handle these control inititatives by organising themselves around the issue at hand. This organising process ends or fades away when there are no need for further attention to the control initiative. Empirical studies were made in the councils of Västerbotten, Sörmland and Upp­sala counties. Management control initiatives investigated were performance-related pay, quality improvement work, systematic planning procedures, provider/purchaser-models, downsizing projects and profit center systems. The systems for management accounting and control appeared to structure health care organisations in terms of spatial structuring temporal structuring and actor categorization. The management control initiatives introduced were structured as extraordinary organising processes delimited in terms of space, time and involved actors. Actors in the administrative norm system participated with the intention to change the organisation, while those in the medical norm system aimed at just handling the initiative. Management control initiatives can therefore be seen as passing opportunities to change, passing in the sense that the organising processes are temporary by nature, opportunities in the sense that temporary re-coupling can be used to  achieve long-term change. One such opportunity is the formulation of control initiatives; the possibility of using simple and standardized change strategies can be useful, but only if they are also linked to the medical norm system. A second opportunity is the temporary organising processes; if the project form of organising change can also be conveyed to the medical norm system, management control initiatives could result in short, intense courses of events that actually change things. Using Bird Distributions to Assess Extinction Risk and Identify Conservation Priorities in Biodiversity Hotspots

<p>Habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation threaten the World’s ecosystems and species. These, and other threats, will likely be exacerbated by climate change. Due to a limited budget for conservation, we are forced to prioritize a few areas over others. These places are selected based on their uniqueness and vulnerability. One of the most famous examples is the biodiversity hotspots: areas where large quantities of endemic species meet alarming rates of habitat loss. Most of these places are in the tropics, where species have smaller ranges, diversity is higher, and ecosystems are most threatened.</p><p> Species distributions are useful to understand ecological theory and evaluate extinction risk. Small-ranged species, or those endemic to one place, are more vulnerable to extinction than widely distributed species. However, current range maps often overestimate the distribution of species, including areas that are not within the suitable elevation or habitat for a species. Consequently, assessment of extinction risk using these maps could underestimate vulnerability.</p><p>In order to be effective in our quest to conserve the World’s most important places we must: 1) Translate global and national priorities into practical local actions, 2) Find synergies between biodiversity conservation and human welfare, 3) Evaluate the different dimensions of threats, in order to design effective conservation measures and prepare for future threats, and 4) Improve the methods used to evaluate species’ extinction risk and prioritize areas for conservation. The purpose of this dissertation is to address these points in Colombia and other global biodiversity hotspots.</p><p>In Chapter 2, I identified the global, strategic conservation priorities and then downscaled to practical local actions within the selected priorities in Colombia. I used existing range maps of 171 bird species to identify priority conservation areas that would protect the greatest number of species at risk in Colombia (endemic and small-ranged species). The Western Andes had the highest concentrations of such species—100 in total—but the lowest densities of national parks. I then adjusted the priorities for this region by refining these species ranges by selecting only areas of suitable elevation and remaining habitat. The estimated ranges of these species shrank by 18–100% after accounting for habitat and suitable elevation. Setting conservation priorities on the basis of currently available range maps excluded priority areas in the Western Andes and, by extension, likely elsewhere and for other taxa. By incorporating detailed maps of remaining natural habitats, I made practical recommendations for conservation actions. One recommendation was to restore forest connections to a patch of cloud forest about to become isolated from the main Andes.</p><p>For Chapter 3, I identified areas where bird conservation met ecosystem service protection in the Central Andes of Colombia. Inspired by the November 11th (2011) landslide event near Manizales, and the current poor results of Colombia’s Article 111 of Law 99 of 1993 as a conservation measure in this country, I set out to prioritize conservation and restoration areas where landslide prevention would complement bird conservation in the Central Andes. This area is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, but also one of the most threatened. Using the case of the Rio Blanco Reserve, near Manizales, I identified areas for conservation where endemic and small-range bird diversity was high, and where landslide risk was also high. I further prioritized restoration areas by overlapping these conservation priorities with a forest cover map. Restoring forests in bare areas of high landslide risk and important bird diversity yields benefits for both biodiversity and people. I developed a simple landslide susceptibility model using slope, forest cover, aspect, and stream proximity. Using publicly available bird range maps, refined by elevation, I mapped concentrations of endemic and small-range bird species. I identified 1.54 km2 of potential restoration areas in the Rio Blanco Reserve, and 886 km2 in the Central Andes region. By prioritizing these areas, I facilitate the application of Article 111 which requires local and regional governments to invest in land purchases for the conservation of watersheds.</p><p>Chapter 4 dealt with elevational ranges of montane birds and the impact of lowland deforestation on their ranges in the Western Andes of Colombia, an important biodiversity hotspot. Using point counts and mist-nets, I surveyed six altitudinal transects spanning 2200 to 2800m. Three transects were forested from 2200 to 2800m, and three were partially deforested with forest cover only above 2400m. I compared abundance-weighted mean elevation, minimum elevation, and elevational range width. In addition to analyzing the effect of deforestation on 134 species, I tested its impact within trophic guilds and habitat preference groups. Abundance-weighted mean and minimum elevations were not significantly different between forested and partially deforested transects. Range width was marginally different: as expected, ranges were larger in forested transects. Species in different trophic guilds and habitat preference categories showed different trends. These results suggest that deforestation may affect species’ elevational ranges, even within the forest that remains. Climate change will likely exacerbate harmful impacts of deforestation on species’ elevational distributions. Future conservation strategies need to account for this by protecting connected forest tracts across a wide range of elevations.</p><p> In Chapter 5, I refine the ranges of 726 species from six biodiversity hotspots by suitable elevation and habitat. This set of 172 bird species for the Atlantic Forest, 138 for Central America, 100 for the Western Andes of Colombia, 57 for Madagascar, 102 for Sumatra, and 157 for Southeast Asia met the criteria for range size, endemism, threat, and forest use. Of these 586 species, the Red List deems 108 to be threatened: 15 critically endangered, 29 endangered, and 64 vulnerable. When ranges are refined by elevational limits and remaining forest cover, 10 of those critically endangered species have ranges < 100km2, but then so do 2 endangered species, seven vulnerable, and eight non-threatened ones. Similarly, 4 critically endangered species, 20 endangered, and 12 vulnerable species have refined ranges < 5000km2, but so do 66 non-threatened species. A striking 89% of these species I have classified in higher threat categories have <50% of their refined ranges inside protected areas. I find that for 43% of the species I assessed, refined range sizes fall within thresholds that typically have higher threat categories than their current assignments. I recommend these species for closer inspection by those who assess risk. These assessments are not only important on a species-by-species basis, but by combining distributions of threatened species, I create maps of conservation priorities. Archaeology is a popular subject which the public has the opportunity to meet in a variety of contexts. In addition to television documentaries, non-fiction and popular science magazines, archaeology has even played a significant role in the fictional world. Apart from these sources, you can also find archaeology in news reports where the newspapers or the tv-stations acts like mediators of archaeological news based on the archaeological work that is currently ongoing in our present time. Since it is now a demand on Swedish contract archaeology to communicate it's results, the news media often gets to play the role as the link between the archaeologists and the public. This paper is based on an analyse of archaeological news presented in local newspapers. The aim of the study was to investigate the visual mediation of archaeology to the reader. The results showed that the visual mediation of archaeological news is not only based on the selection of photos or illustrations. According to this survey, visual mediation can also be constructed using particular words that either describe the factual characteristics or words that alludes to the fictional world. Archaeological news that are channeled through local newspapers tend to reflect a narrow view of the archaeological discipline. The reason for this can probably be seen as a consequence of the relationship between archaeology and the society. In order to broaden the currently prevailing image of the archaeological discipline, this paper arguments for a much closer and more deliberate collaboration between local news media and archaeologists.

Seeing Segregation Happen : The Assembling of Normative Space and Attribution of Normative-Spatial-Identities

In view of the augmenting spatial, socio-economic and ethnic segregation in Sweden over the last 30 years, the purpose of this study is to examine, illustrate and enhance the understanding of mundane segregation processes by studying how social actors collaboratively interact in Swedish online forums regarding in which areas it is “good” or “bad” to live in. The theoretical and methodological framework used to guide the collection, coding and analysis of empirical data is based on ethnomethodology and its applied methods conversation analysis, discursive psychology and membership categorization analysis. This implies a data-driven approach in which the analysis is solely based on the observable-and-reportable understandings of the interactants themselves. The results of the study show that the participants collaboratively orient to and assemble normative spatial categories by connecting these with spatial identities. Simply put, “good places” are treated as inherently linked to “good people”, and vice versa. Because of the way in which interactants treat these spatial-social categories as both inherently and normatively linked, the thesis introduces the concept normative-spatial-identities, in order to facilitate the investigation of how social actors collaboratively make sense of,  orient to and assemble normative spatial boundaries and in this fashion, contribute to enhancing the understanding of everyday inclusion-and-exclusion practices.

Calabi-Yau categories and quivers with superpotential

This thesis studies derived equivalences between total spaces of vector bundles and dg-quivers. A dg-quiver is a graded quiver whose path algebra is a dg-algebra. A quiver with superpotential is a dg-quiver whose differential is determined by a "function" Φ. It is known that the bounded derived category of representations of quivers with superpotential with finite dimensional cohomology is a Calabi- Yau triangulated category. Hence quivers with superpotential can be viewed as noncommutative Calabi- Yau manifolds. One might then ask if there are derived equivalences between Calabi-Yau manifolds and quivers with superpotential. In this thesis, we answer this question and, generalizing Bridgeland [15], give a recipe on how to construct such derived equivalences.

Previous studies on children’s acquisition of depicting verbs in signed languages have chiefly studied the use of classifiers in verbs of motion and location, particularly the order in which the different classes of handshape are acquired. The age of the children in these studies have ranged from age three to thirteen, and an important finding has been that classifier constructions are not fully acquired until early adolescence. Most of these studies have used an elicitation tool to investigate the production and comprehension of classifiers, but have not provided any adult target norms of the test items when scoring children’s achievement. The present dissertation provides a detailed description of both adults’ and children’s verb constructions in descriptions of cutting and breaking events in Swedish Sign Language (SSL), specifically focusing on the number of hands used in signing, handshape category and hand activity, which has not been previously described for any sign language. As part of this study, 14 deaf adults (ages 20–72) and 11 deaf children (2;1–6;6) of deaf parents, all native-users of SSL, performed a task that involved describing 53 video clips of cutting and breaking events. The clips show an event in which an actor separates material, either with the aid of a tool or without. Additionally, some clips show an entity separating by itself without an actor being involved. The adults described the events with depicting verb constructions that are produced with two hands. The analysis of the handshapes produced three categories: substitutor, manipulator and descriptor. The most frequent construction in the description of events without a tool was two acting manipulators (depicting a hand handling an object), whereas in descriptions of events with a tool the combinations were acting substitutor or manipulator with a non-acting manipulator. The acting hand referred to the tool and the non-acting manipulator to the affected entity. In descriptions of events without an actor, either two substitutors or two manipulators were used. In addition to depicting verb constructions, the descriptions also contained resultative complements, i.e. signs carrying information about the result of the activity being carried out. The complements were either lexical signs or some form of depicting verb construction. Similar observations have not been noted for any other signed language. In the manner of the adults, the children used depicting verb constructions in descriptions of cutting and breaking events (681 tokens), but they also used pointing and lexical signs (64 tokens). Nearly half of the verb constructions that were used by the children corresponded to the adult target forms. The majority of the constructions describing events without a tool corresponded to the adult target forms using two acting manipulators, even among the youngest informants. In events with a tool, only a third of the constructions corresponded to the adult target forms (emerging at 4;8 – 5;0); the remaining two-thirds were deviating constructions in terms of number of hands, handshape category and hand activity. Resultative complement are sparsely used by children (57 tokens), the most chosen type of complement being lexical signs. Pervasive features of children’s constructions were the addition of contact between the hands and a preference for substitutors, something not found in adults’ constructions. These features were elucidated within the framework of Real Space blending theory, with the study showing that children first use visible blended entities and that invisible blended entities do not emerge until 4;8–5;0. / <p>Disputationen teckenspråkstolkas</p>

A conservação da biodiversidade nos discursos expositivos do Zoo de Barcelona / The Biodiversity Conservation in expository speeches of the Barcelona Zoo

A Educação para a Conservação é um campo de pesquisa que se dedica ao estudo das reflexões éticas e das atitudes humanas direcionadas para com o respeito que se deve ter com o ambiente, principalmente pelo estabelecimento de ações conservacionistas pautadas em interações educativas. Os Zoos, de modo geral, estão inseridos nessa perspectiva, uma vez que se apresentam como instituições de cunho educativo voltadas para a conservação da biodiversidade. No entanto, o discurso expositivo apresentado por esses aparatos culturais no Brasil, muitas vezes, não contempla tais elementos em suas exposições. Por este motivo, buscou-se a análise de exposições zoológicas também no exterior, que contemplassem discursos sobre a conservação da biodiversidade em suas exposições, tendo sido escolhida a exposição do Zoo de Barcelona, Espanha, para a realização desta investigação. A pesquisa teve por objetivos compreender como a conservação da biodiversidade é abordada na exposição deste zoológico catalão, com base na formulação de saberes de referência constituídos a partir de diferentes áreas: os Movimentos Ambientalistas, a Filosofia da Conservação e as Éticas Ambientais. Igualmente, buscou-se compreender como o discurso expositivo sobre conservação encontra-se apresentado nos aparatos expográficos distribuídos ao longo da exposição, bem como em livros e documentos. Compreendendo a investigação como um Estudo de Caso, foram acessados documentos institucionais de acesso público encontrados no site da instituição e textos presentes nos painéis expositivos. As análises foram realizadas com base no referencial teórico da Transposição Didática/Museográfica, que permite o estudo da exposição por ao menos três lógicas: a lógica do discurso; a lógica do espaço; e a lógica do gesto. Além disso, o mesmo referencial prevê o estabelecimento de um saber de referência ou saber sábio pautado no conhecimento epistemológico sobre a conservação da biodiversidade e, nesta pesquisa, no discurso de pesquisadores da área, que foram entrevistados sobre este assunto. Este saber de referência ou saber sábio possibilitou a criação de um conjunto de categorias de análise que pautou a análise do discurso expositivo apresentado pelo Zoo de Barcelona. As categorias criadas foram classificadas em duas dimensões: a dos Valores e a das Ações. Duas categorias, a Antropocêntrica e a Não antropocêntrica constituíram a Dimensão dos Valores e quatro categorias, a Desenvolvimentista, a Sustentabilista, a Sócio-humanística e a Técnico-científica constituíram a Dimensão das Ações. Os resultados apontaram que o discurso expositivo é composto predominantemente por informações Técnico-científicas e Sustentabilistas, ambas as categorias contextualizadas por uma visão não antropocêntrica de valorização da natureza. A forma como o discurso expositivo encontra-se apresentado na parte textual da exposição corrobora a linha conceitual de assuntos abordados nos grandes eventos globais promovidos pela ONU ao longo dos últimos 40 anos, sobre a conservação do meio ambiente. Categorias como a Sócio-humanística, a Antropocêntrica e a Dimensão dos Valores foram pouco abordadas. A categoria Desenvolvimentista não foi encontrada na exposição. Pelas evidências levantadas durante a análise dos dados pode-se concluir que o Zoo de Barcelona apresenta um discurso expositivo conservacionista e que há elementos suficientes na exposição para se apontar o desenvolvimento de uma Educação para a Conservação. / Education for Conservation is a research field dedicated to the study of ethical reflections and human attitudes directed towards the respect which must have it for the environment, especially the establishment of conservation actions based on educational interactions. Zoos, in general, are entered in this perspective, as it is presented as an educational institutions type directed to the conservation of biodiversity. Though, the expositive speech presented by this cultural mechanism in Brazil often does not include this kind of elements in its exhibitions. Therefore, it sought the zoo expositions analysis also abroad, that addressed discourses on biodiversity conservation in their expositions, which was chosen the Zoo of Barcelona\' exposition, Spain, to perform this research. The research aimed to understand how biodiversity conservation is addressed in this exposition Catalan zoo, based on the formulation made up from different areas of knowledge reference: the Environmental Movement, the Conservation Philosophy and Environmental Ethics. Also, it sought to understand how the expositive speech on conservation is presented in expographic devices distributed throughout the exhibition, as well as books and documents. Understanding the investigation as a Study\'s Case, it was accessed institutional documents of publicly accessible found on other website and present texts in the exhibition panels. The analysis were performed based on the theoretic framework of Didactic Transposition/ Museographic, allowing the expositive study for at least three logics: the logic of speech; the logic of the space; and the management logic. Moreover, the same reference provides for the establishment of a knowledge reference or wise knowledge, guided the epistemological knowledge about the conservation of biodiversity and, in this study, the area\'s researchers, who were interviewed on this subject. This reference knowledge or wise knowledge allowed creating a set of categories of analysis that guided the analysis of expositive speech presented by the Zoo of Barcelona. The created categories were classified in two dimensions: Values and Actions. Two categories, Anthropocentric and non-anthropocentric composed the Values Dimension and four categories, Developmental, the Sustainable, the Socio-humanistic and technical-scientific formed the Actions Dimension. The results showed that the expositive speech consists mainly of Technical- scientific and Sustainable information, both contextualized categories by a non-anthropocentric vision of nature appreciation. The way the expositive discourse is presented in the textual part of the exhibition confirms the conceptual range of issues addressed in major global events organized by the ONU over the past 40 years on the conservation of the environment.
