Ancient Greek and Roman Methods of Inquiry into the (Human) GoodMerry, David 06 July 2020 (has links)
In this dissertation, I suggest a new explanation for disagreement about the human good (I.e what makes a human life good) in ancient philosophy: namely, that differing understandings of argumentation contexts and goals shaped selection of argument schemes, which in turn influenced which theories of the good seemed plausible. The texts I primarily deal with are connections between Plato’s Gorgias and the Philebus, Aristotle’s Topics and the Nicomachean Ethics, Seneca’s EM 82, 83, 87 and 120, Epicurus’ Letter to Menoeceus and Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura, and Sextus’ Outlines of Skepticism.

A NEW READOUT TECHNIQUE FOR CD-ROM MULTILEVEL OPTICAL DATA STORAGEGunnarsson, Gunnar Hans, 1962- January 1987 (has links)
A technique is presented that utilizes an on-axis intensity measurement to detect the reflected light from a multiple CD-ROM surface. The thesis includes a computer simulation of the detected signal for scans of various structures and discusses finite size detector effects. A suitably sized detector passes 77% of the total light flux at the detector plane without affecting the depth discrimination property of the technique. Experimentally, a breadboard Height Readout System (HRS) could detect height differences on test relief structures. A signal to noise ratio was obtained that corresponds to a noise equivalent height sensitivity of 30 Angstroms. Therefore, the HRS could discriminate between five levels on the test structure. An addition to the new technique uses a phase plate to determine if the focused beam is going into or out of a pit. Thus, the storage capability per unit area on the disk surface can be increased.

Lindberg, Beatrice January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate how many of the men and women sentenced to prison that suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It also aims to answer the question of however there is a difference between sexes according to prevalence, and the correlation between ADHD and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). The method used is self-report questionnaires which are well tested for this purpose, Wender-Utah Rating Scale (WURS) and Mini Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I). The questionnaires were answered by 49 male and female prison inmates, who were residing in prisons in mid-Sweden. The results of the study show that a high number of the population suffers from both ADHD and ASPD. The differences in sexes were not statistically significant, but based on numbers the females are higher in prevalence than the males in ADHD. Since there were few males in this study, the results, however, need to be interpreted with caution.

Robust Image Storage Mathods for CD-RZhang, Haiyong January 2010 (has links)
We are now in a rapid growth digital age. Different kinds of digitized applications are affecting people's daily life in different ways. All of these digitized applications generate tremendous amounts of information every day. We need to archive the important information because of their enduring value. However, the storage of digital information over time is a complex and difficult task. Selecting reliable digital archiving media, choosing suitable digital archiving methods, and using appropriate file formats for digital archiving are essential elements for achieving this task. Many companies and organizations have invested in finding reliable and affordable storage media for digital archiving since the end of the last century. Compact Disc Recordable (CD-R) quickly became one of the most popular choices for preserving digital information because CD-R can provide reliable back up at a reasonable price. Nevertheless, recent studies revealed that CD-R as a recording media for long term information archiving is not as reliable as we wish [4]. Its recording media may suffer from lost data because of possible damage from heat, humidity and light. In order to improve the performance of CD-R for long term digital archiving, there has been some research on hardware and software solutions to address this potential problem. Still most existing improvements have limitations either in the need of changing current CD-R standards or significant changes in current optical media drives. The objective of this research is to design and implement a novel system that advances the state of the art in digital archiving using CD-R, especially in the area of digital image storage. The design proposes robust image storage methods for CD-Rs based on the JPEG2000 standard. These storage methods combine the virtual block interleaver, Reed Solomon codes, and the error resilience tools of JPEG2000 effectively to protect the images on CD-Rs against errors caused by possible physical damage. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed digital data storage methods, numerous experiments are conducted. The results show that the robust digital archiving methods for CD-R are useful and efficient.
