Navigation Tools' Effect on Learners' Achievement and Attitude

Navigation tools can be used to direct the amount of learner control and interactivity available in a hypermedia hybrid CD-ROM environment. The purpose of this study was to ascertain if varying the amount of learner control and interactivity through the used of navigation tools would influence the achievement and attitude of learners. The design of the study was a quasi-experimental study with random assignment of three ability levels of students to three navigation tool treatment groups. A 3 (navigation tool treatments) by 3 (ability levels) by 2 (achievement and attitude) factorial design was employed to test the hypotheses. A module titled The Poetry Portal was constructed to test 3 navigation tools (linear, menu and search engine) and their effect on achievement and attitude scores. One hundred forty-six eighth grade students were stratified into 3 ability levels (low, middle, high) by Stanford 9 scores. The module content correlated to the English 8 Virginia Standards of Learning. Results of this study based on the data are derived from descriptive statistics, two-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA and a Tukey/Kramer Post Hoc test. The level of significance was set at .05. Results show a significant gain in achievement for high ability level students using the navigation tool search engine. Significant difference in attitude was found for all ability levels using the navigation tool menu. Suggestions for further research in this area are included. / Ph. D.

Die rheumatoide Arthritis

Multimedia - Wort des Jahres 1995 - taucht als populärer Begriff in allen Bereichen unserer Gesellschaft auf. Auch an Universitäten erhofft man sich durch die Einführung von computerunterstützten Lernformen eine höhere Qualität der Lehre sowie Kosteneinsparungen. Nach ersten Versuchen in den 60er Jahren war das Neue in den 90ern die realitätsnahe, multimediale Simulation von Entscheidungssituationen. Auf dem Gebiet der Rheumatologie ist derzeit jedoch noch ein Mangel an deutschsprachigen Softwaretiteln zu erkennen. Ziel war die Erstellung eines multimedialen Kompendiums über die rheumatoide Arthritis für den Einsatz in der universitären und postgraduierten Lehre. Das System soll als elektronisches Nachschlagewerk und als Basis für interaktive Diashows geeignet sein. Mit Hilfe eines Apple Macintosh und der Autorensoftware Macromedia Director wurde eine CD-ROM entwickelt, die sowohl für Macintosh- als auch für Windows-Computer geeignet ist. Die Beschreibung der Symptome der rheumatoiden Arthritis und der erforderlichen Untersuchungstechniken nimmt mit 31% der Bildschirmseiten den größten Teil des vorliegenden Multimedia-Kompendiums ein. Weitere Schwerpunkte wurden auf Pathogenese (19%), bildgebende Verfahren (14%), Differentialdiagnosen (11%), Therapie (10%) und Laboruntersuchungen (7%) gelegt. Videos und Animationen dienen der Illustration zellulärer Vorgänge und der Zusammenfassung klinischer Untersuchungstechniken. Etablierte Kriterienkataloge für elektronische Medien dienten der Qualitätssicherung im Entwicklungsprozeß. Eine parallel durchgeführte formative Evaluation lieferte erste Erkenntnisse über Praxistauglichkeit und Stabilität des Programmes, ohne jedoch eine fundierte summative Evaluation ersetzen zu können. Multimedia-Lehrbücher wie das vorliegende Kompendium stellen für den konventionellen Unterricht eine ideale Ergänzung zum klassischen Lehrbuch dar und dienen für die problemorientierte Ausbildung als schnell zur Verfügung stehende Wissensbasis. Jedoch blieben bei der fakultativen Nutzung von computerbasierten Lernmöglichkeiten in Lernzentren die Ergebnisse bisher hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Es ist zu diskutieren, inwieweit die Vorteile der Multimedia-Technologie durch gezielte Integration in das Curriculum an deutschen Hochschulen zu Kosten- und Zeitersparnissen führen können. / Multimedia - word of the year 1995 in Germany - is a popular term cropping up in all areas of society. Universities, too, hope to improve the quality of teaching and to cut costs by introducing computer-based forms of learning. Following initial attempts in the sixties, a new aspect introduced in the nineties was the life-like multimedia simulation of decision-making situations. In medicine, there still is a lack of German-language software packages in rheumatology. The aim of the present project was to develop a multimedia compendium on rheumatoid arthritis for teaching at the university and postgraduate level. The system was intended to serve both as an electronic work of reference and as a basis for interactive slide presentations. Using the authoring tool Macromedia Director on an Apple Macintosh computer, a CD-ROM was developed that can be run on Macintosh and Windows computers alike. The largest part of the multimedia compendium now available (31% of the screen pages) is dedicated to the description of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and examination techniques. Other main areas are pathogenesis (19%), imaging modalities (14%), differential diagnoses (11%), therapy (10%), and laboratory tests (7%). Videos and animations serve to illustrate cellular processes and to summarize the clinical examination techniques. Catalogues of established criteria for electronic media were adhered to during development to assure quality. A simultaneously performed formative evaluation yielded initial results about the practicability and stability of the program but cannot replace a thorough summative evaluation. Multimedia textbooks such as the compendium presented here are ideal supplements to classical textbooks in conventional teaching, providing a rapidly accessible knowledge base for problem-oriented training. However, the results achieved with computer-based learning tools available for optional use at teaching centers have so far lagged behind expectations. It remains to be discussed to what extent the advantages of multimedia technology can save both cost and time by being selectively integrated into the curriculum at German universities.

Initially, this project shows literature review of the studies and projects developed in this area, analyzing the medias of CO-ROM and CO-R in relation of physical and logic structure, showing the studies of the variables who degraded these medias. These studies are the bases of cause versus effect and the parameters to development of a software that can determinate a reliability of medias, that has reliability model developed based in system reliability theory and on the studies in this area. This software has functions of identify medias, data storage and module of reliability analysis. Besides, it does also object of this project an experimental analyses, which counts with visual observation methodology, optical observation and application of the software. This analysis is the base to understand the variables related to the reliability and durability of the medias, as well as, the fundament to propose digital documents preservation. La place et les fonctions des produits multimédias dans la didactique du Français Langue étrangère

L'arrivée de produits multimédias dans le domaine de la formation en langues, comme le souligne Cembalo (2001), a fait naître "excitation et curiosité, espoirs et doutes, certitudes péremptoires et proclamations catastrophistes". Effectivement, alors que certains parlent à leur propos d'une révolution comparable à celle opérée par l'imprimerie de Gutenberg, d'autres n'en voient qu'une simple tromperie consumériste (Lancien 1998a). <br />L'objectif de ce travail est donc de tirer au clair les caractéristiques les plus prometteuses des produits multimédias ainsi que leurs limites afin de montrer ce que ces produits apportent comme changements notables et de quels points de vue ils diffèrent des autres processus déjà utilisés et qui continuent à être utilisés en didactique des langues. <br />Notre travail s'articule autour de trois grandes parties. Dans la première partie nous essayons d'interroger la généalogie des produits multimédias pour les situer par rapport aux technologies qui les ont précédés, car ils ne sont pas nés de rien. Dans la deuxième, nous procédons à l'analyse des cédéroms de langue et des sites Internet conçus pour l'apprentissage/enseignement du français afin d'envisager leur fonctionnement et caractéristique tant didactiques que techniques. Nous étudions, dans la troisième partie, les rapports établis entre ces outils et les autres méthodes ou approches du Français pour les positionner dans le terrain de la didactique des langues.<br />En ce qui concerne le choix des logiciels et des sites Internet qui sont toujours au centre de ce travail, nous nous en tenons aux produits, conçus pour la langue générale, qui s'adressent uniquement à un public débutant, faux-débutant ou intermédiaire et non pas à un public avancé que les concepteurs ne considèrent pas comme clientèle.

<p>Denna rapport beskriver utvecklingen av examensarbetet som utfördes på uppdrag av BrandEx Brandtätningar AB. Ett företag som brandskyddar byggnader, fartyg, oljeplattformar med mera. En officiell webbsida och en CD-ROM-produktion skapades åt företaget. </p><p>Webbsidan konstruerades i webbredigeringsprogrammet Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 och CD-ROM-produktionen i multimedieprogrammet Macromedia Director 7. Det använda materialet innehöll bilder och PDF-filer som BrandEx hade i sitt arkiv, men mycket nytt skapades, exempelvis animeringar och egna musikstycken. Webbsidan gjordes enligt önskemål från BrandEx med en enkel ochstilren design. CD-ROM-produktionen skapades under friare förhållanden med avseende på innehåll och design. Innehållet blandades med animeringar, en videofilm, bilder, text, ljud och musik. </p><p>Både webbsidan och CD-ROM-produktionen gjordes mer som produktionsmallar åt BrandEx. De skall själva kunna uppdatera dessa med ny information. BrandEx kommer att ge ut CD:n till kunder och andra intressenter som vill veta mer om företaget och om brandskydd. Den skall distribueras kostnadsfritt. Webbsidan kommer att vara den centrala informationsplatsen för BrandEx i Sverige. </p> / <p>This report describes the process of the examination work that was made after an offer from BrandEx Brandtätningar AB. A company that fireprotects buildings, ships, oil platforms and so on. An official web site and a CD-ROM-production were created for the company. </p><p>The web site was constructed in the web editing software Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 and the CD-ROM-production in the authoring tool for multimedia production Macromedia Director 7. The used material contained pictures and PDF-files from BrandEx archives, but lot of new material was created, for instance animations and own music tracks. The web site was made according to the wishes from BrandEx in a simple and pure design style. The CD-ROM-production was created under rather free conditions concerning content and design. The content was mixed with animations, a video, pictures, text, sounds and music. </p><p>Both the web site and the CD-ROM-production were made more like production templates for BrandEx. They will be able to update with new information by themselves. BrandEx will issue the CD to customers and other partners that want to know more about the company and about fireprotections. It will be freely distributed. The web site will be the central place of information for BrandEx in Sweden.</p>

Motiverar multimedia till lärande? : åsikter i en mellanstadieklass om datorstödd undervisning

<p>Uppsatsens syfte var att undersöka om lärare och elever som använder sig av CD-rom-baserade läromedel i undervisningen, anser att denna undervisningsform motiverar eleverna till att lära sig. För att kunna uppfylla syftet har vi gjort observationer och semistrukturerade intervjuer. Det var en personlig intervju med en lärare och två gruppdiskussioner med totalt åtta elever ur en mellanstadieklass. Klassen använde sig av CD-rombaserad undervisning i ämnet engelska. Observationen gav hjälp att utforma intervjufrågorna och möjlighet att jämföra det vi observerade med svaren vi fick under intervjuerna. Det resultat vi har kommit fram till är bl.a. att majoriteten av de tillfrågade eleverna tycker att det är roligare att arbeta med datorn än att arbeta i boken. Fem av eleverna tycker att undervisningsformen är rolig på grund av de ingående spelmomenten i programmet. Lika många anser att de skulle vilja ha liknande program i andra ämnen. Klassens lärare anser att den här arbetsformen gör att eleverna inte tänker på att de lär sig engelska. Eleverna är motiverade till att använda datorn och det leder till att de lär sig engelska på köpet. Lärarens tidigare erfarenhet från att byta läromedel i en klass, får henne att tro att motivationen till programmet kan vara på grund av nyhetens behag. Läraren kunde inte se någon skillnad i motivation mellan pojkar och flickor till att använda datorn eller att lära sig engelska med CD-romprogrammet.</p>

Is it possible, and suitable, to use multimedia in classic literature studies at Swedish upper secondary school? What alternatives are there?  Is there any foundation in the curriculum for an expanded conception of text as in multimedia?  Will the conception literacy support use of multimedia in classic literature studies, and in what ways? How do we generally look upon the definition text, is it only printed letters, or something more? To get an answer to the questions we decided to examine a number of theories, Gardner’s theory about the different intelligences, the conception literacy and the expanded text concept. In these three theories we took our starting-point for the following work. The main subjects became two interactive sights on Internet and one CD-ROM, all containing classic literature. Our previous knowledge in this subject field was very meager.  This work has given us an opportunity to discover some of the multimedia that is available, and the result we have come to is that multimedia absolutely belongs in studies of classic literature as well as in other subjects. We think it is necessary to pay attention to multimedia in the future education, because of the text flow in the society. Text flow is much more than just printed letters, for example web sites with further more experiences such as pictures/paintings and music, which makes a comprehensive picture. As we see it, this conclusion has support in the theories.

<p>Denna rapport visar hur en reklamfilm för en specifik produkt har utvecklats, i form av en CD-ROM-produktion. Företaget Alding AB har efterfrågat reklamfilmen för sin produkt Alding Webshop Maker 1.3. </p><p>Flera olika programvaror har använts vid genomförandet, varav ljudredigeringsprogrammet Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 5.0 och bildredigeringsprogrammet Adobe Photoshop 5.5 hör till de mest frekvent använda. Med hjälp av programmet Macromedia Director 7.0 har sammanställningen av reklamfilmen utförts. Rapporten behandlar de olika problem som uppstått under arbetets gång samt hur de har kunnat undanröjas. </p><p>Efter färdigställandet av CD-ROM-produktionen började Alding AB att använda den. På detta sätt fick de ytterligare en kanal varigenom de kan sprida information om Alding Webshop Maker 1.3. Den enkla och informativa reklamfilmen gör att presumtiva kunder får upp ögonen för produkten.</p>
