Thermodynamical Formalism

Chousionis, Vasileios 08 1900 (has links)
Thermodynamical formalism is a relatively recent area of pure mathematics owing a lot to some classical notions of thermodynamics. On this thesis we state and prove some of the main results in the area of thermodynamical formalism. The first chapter is an introduction to ergodic theory. Some of the main theorems are proved and there is also a quite thorough study of the topology that arises in Borel probability measure spaces. In the second chapter we introduce the notions of topological pressure and measure theoretic entropy and we state and prove two very important theorems, Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem and the Variational Principle. Distance expanding maps and their connection with the calculation of topological pressure cover the third chapter. The fourth chapter introduces Gibbs states and the very important Perron-Frobenius Operator. The fifth chapter establishes the connection between pressure and geometry. Topological pressure is used in the calculation of Hausdorff dimensions. Finally the sixth chapter introduces the notion of conformal measures.

Tom Stoppard: Humanizing Chaos

Pritzker, Elaine C. 24 March 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to critically evaluate Tom Stoppard’s application of chaos theory and quantum science in ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, HAPGOOD and ARCADIA; and determine the extent to which Stoppard argues for the importance of human action and choice. Through critical analysis this study examined how Stoppard applies the quantum aspects of: (1) indeterminacy to human epistemology in ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD; (2) complementarity to human identity in HAPGOOD; and (3) recursive symmetry to human history in ARCADIA. It also examined how Stoppard excavates the complexities of human action, choice and identity through the lens of chaos theory and quantum science. These findings demonstrated that Tom Stoppard is not merely juxtaposing quantum science and human interactions for the sake of drama; rather, by excavating the complexities of human action, choice and identity through the lens of chaos theory and quantum science, Stoppard demonstrates the fundamental connection between individuals and the post-Newtonian universe.

No processo de escrita o que está naturalizado na escola passa a ser visto por outros ângulos, questões são postas a nu, o que pode impulsionar a busca por outras maneiras de fazer na escola, vida / Abstract: This study maps the production of teachers and school administrators from the Campinas Department of Education, São Paulo of a specialization course "The Research and Technology in Teacher Education", given by the Faculty of Education at UNICAMP during 2008 and 2009. Following the flows of desire in the daily contingency, discussing and theorizing practices generates a chaotic educational process, consisting of intensive fields which I have called "Process Education Chaos", characterized by instability and uncertainty. In an attempt to find traces of intensive fields of detonators of education as obligation, capable of boosting other experiments of acting in school, I go back and forth between the teachers and managers¿ written productions and the theories of philosophers; such as, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Silvio Gallo, Baruch Spinoza, Antonin Artaud, Jacques Derrida, among others. Some intensive fields generated during meetings showed a growing rise on its action force similar to Spinoza¿s theories, for example, "the power of desire", "the gay encounters", "the exercise of writing" in a free manner. It follows the flow of desire on the discussion and theorization about the daily school practice, both by teachers and managers. The "encounters" which may be related to anything that increases the strength of existence and the exercise of writing, which, as the wind blows away castrating records of reason, our minds have been marked by the certain way that Writing was taught in school. The knowledge production on such an educational process goes across the board and in a transversal manner. It happens in the curriculum, which is open, and is constantly changing. The process of writing, that which is taken for granted in school, comes to be seen from different angles. It begins to see questions that be put openly which can boost the search for different ways of facing what has to be done at school / Doutorado / Psicologia Educacional / Doutora em Educação

Lyapunov Exponents, Entropy and Dimension

Williams, Jeremy M. 08 1900 (has links)
We consider diffeomorphisms of a compact Riemann Surface. A development of Oseledec's Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem is given, along with a development of measure theoretic entropy and dimension. The main result, due to L.S. Young, is that for certain diffeomorphisms of a surface, there is a beautiful relationship between these three concepts; namely that the entropy equals dimension times expansion.

Bayesian Inference of Manning's n coefficient of a Storm Surge Model: an Ensemble Kalman filter vs. a polynomial chaos-based MCMC

Siripatana, Adil 08 1900 (has links)
Conventional coastal ocean models solve the shallow water equations, which describe the conservation of mass and momentum when the horizontal length scale is much greater than the vertical length scale. In this case vertical pressure gradients in the momentum equations are nearly hydrostatic. The outputs of coastal ocean models are thus sensitive to the bottom stress terms defined through the formulation of Manning’s n coefficients. This thesis considers the Bayesian inference problem of the Manning’s n coefficient in the context of storm surge based on the coastal ocean ADCIRC model. In the first part if the thesis, we apply an ensemble-based Kalman filter, the singular evolutive interpolated Kalman (SEIK) filter to estimate both a constant Manning’s n coefficient and a 2-D parameterized Manning’s coefficient on one ideal and one of more realistic domain using observation system simulation experiments (OSSEs). We study the sensitivity of the system to the ensemble size. we also access the benefits from using an inflation factor on the filter performance. To study the limitation of the Guassian restricted assumption on the SEIK filter, we also implemented in the second part of this thesis a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method based on a Generalized Polynomial chaos (gPc) approach for the estimation of the 1-D and 2-D Mannning’s n coefficient. The gPc is used to build a surrogate model that imitate the ADCIRC model in order to make the computational cost of implementing the MCMC with the ADCIRC model reasonable. We evaluate the performance of the MCMC-gPc approach and study its robustness to different OSSEs scenario. we also compare its estimates with those resulting from SEIK in term of parameter estimates and full distributions. we present a full analysis of the solution of these two methods, of the contexts of their algorithms, and make recommendation for fully realistic application.

Light Management in Optoelectronic Devices with Disordered and Chaotic Structures

Khan, Yasser 07 1900 (has links)
With experimental realization, energy harvesting capabilities of chaotic microstructures were explored. Incident photons falling into chaotic trajectories resulted in energy buildup for certain frequencies. As a consequence, many fold enhancement in light trapping was observed. These ellipsoid like chaotic microstructures demonstrated 25% enhancement in light trapping at 450nm excitation and 15% enhancement at 550nm excitation. Optimization of these structures can drive novel chaos-assisted energy harvesting systems. In subsequent sections of the thesis, prospect of broadband light extraction from white light emitting diodes were investigated, which is an unchallenged but quintessential problem in solid-state lighting. Size dependent scattering allows microstructures to interact strongly with narrow-band light. If disorder is introduced in spread and sizes of microstructures, broadband light extraction is possible. A novel scheme with Voronoi tessellation to quantify disorder in physical systems was also introduced, and a link between voronoi disorder and state disorder of statistical mechanics was established. Overall, in this thesis some nascent concepts regarding disorder and chaos were investigated to efficiently manage electromagnetic waves in optoelectronic devices.
