Identifying Upland Habitats and Water-Related Habitats in the City of Denton, Texas, Using LiDAR Data and GIS

This research underscores the importance of integrating the evolving LiDAR technology and GIS spatial analysis for effective management of urban environment, habitat conservation, and sustainable development planning. The study area of this research is the City of Denton which has undergone urban expansion leading to significant alterations in the city's land cover patterns. The methodologies developed in this study include collecting the data sources, and processing of LiDAR point clouds of years 2019 and 2020 to generate the digital elevation model (DEM), digital surface model (DSM), building height model (BHM), and canopy height model (CHM). The models could separate developed from undeveloped lands and identify upland and water-related habitats by the natural threshold in plant height and by proximity to water and FEMA 100-year flood zones. The results show that 18 % of the total area of the city is occupied by upland habitats while water-related habitats cover 16 % of the total area. Upland habitats are

Recently tourism sector has been gaining more importance as an essential part of the local economic development due to the global economic reformation, and many cities have achieved tourism based on local economic development. The concept of CHM has increasingly become an important subtitle for tourism sector with planning perspectives as a significant planning tool. The concept consists of combining the cultural, social, economic, and touristic sectors for an enhanced wider plan. This thesis aims to investigate CHM on the case of Tripoli which has witnessed CHM development at its old city centre. It tries to analyze the local impact on Tripoli city and introduce a newly rehabilitated historical city centre for better tourism activities and an improved local development. Using Tripoli study case as a research method, this research focuses on Abou Ali district in Tripoli city. This district, in particular, has examined local tourism and economic development based on a CHM project prepared at the city level base to improve its local economy depending on cultural management related to its tourism activities. The local government, assisted by national and international supports, has introduced CHM to help the old neglected historical city centre re-emerge into the local economy which is the focal point this thesis aims to study.

Comparison of IKONOS Derived Vegetation Index and LiDAR Derived Canopy Height Model for Grassland Management.

Forest encroachment is understood to be the main reason for prairie grassland decline across the United States. In Texas and Oklahoma, juniper has been highlighted as particularly opportunistic. This study assesses the usefulness of three remote sensing techniques to aid in locating the areas of juniper encroachment for the LBJ Grasslands in Decatur, Texas. An object based classification was performed in eCognition and final accuracy assessments placed the overall accuracy at 94%, a significant improvement over traditional pixel based methods. Image biomass was estimated using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for 1 meter resolution IKONOS winter images. A high correlation between the sum of NDVI for tree objects and field tree biomass was determined where R = 0.72, suggesting NDVI sum of a tree area is plausible. However, issues with NDVI saturation and regression produced unrealistically high biomass estimates for large NDVI. Canopy height model (CHM) derived from 3-5m LiDAR data did not perform as well. LiDAR typically used for digital elevation model (DEM) production was acquired for the CHM and produced correlations of R = 0.26. This suggests an inability for this particular dataset to identify juniper trees. When points that registered a tree height where correlated with field values, an R = 0.5 was found, suggesting denser point spacing would be necessary for this type of LiDAR data. Further refining of the methods used in this study could yield such information as the amount of juniper tree for a given location, fuel loads for prescribed burns and better information for the best approach to remove the juniper and ultimately management juniper encroachment into grasslands.

Exotic Decays of a Vector-liketop Partner at the LHC

An evaluation of how sensitive some ATLAS searches for new physics are to a new beyond standard model (BSM) vector-like quark (VLQ) and a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) scalar. This was done by simulating a signal containing these new particles and making a recast of it onto existing verified ATLAS searches for new physics at center-of-mass (CM) energy of 13 TeV (Run 2) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Signals for recasting were tailored such that their final states would be appropriate in relation to each respective ATLAS search in order to use the same selection criteria as applied in the existing searches. The results are summarized in the form of significances (Z) for each masspoint of the new top-partner and S particle. Significances did not show any expectiation of excluding any masspoint in the examined mass range for the recasts at 95% CL. This suggests that a dedicated search for these particles in the considered masspoints would be required.
