Investigation of Modularization of Measurement Programs for CMMs

Teke, Onur Ahmet January 2013 (has links)
Coordinate measurement machines (CMMs) are used to control whether workpieces meet customers’ need or not. Creating measurement programs for CMMs takes long time and companies try to find a way to decrease the time for preparation processes. The aim of this thesis work is to investigate the measurement processes of products within Sandvik Coromant AB in Gimo, Sweden and to focus on the preparation of modularized measurement programs. The main goal is to study measurement processes in the company, and to find and recommend different alternatives for modularization of measurement programs of products so that time and energy can be saved. In order to understand the current measurement processes in the company with its gaps and risks and also to be able to find further possible improvements, many interviews, meetings and a questionnaire have been made. Employees’ opinions and ideas about modularization of measurement programs have been collected. Three different cases about modularization of measurement programs have been presented in the thesis work. The first case is about the actual situation in the company. The gaps and risks which have been observed and collected have been presented. The second case focuses on modularization of today’s insert seats into two pieces: insert seat module and pre-stress module. The third case focuses on the feasibility of dividing the insert seats into much smaller modules. In the conclusion part, all three cases and all work which has been done during the thesis are presented. Last but not least, some further research subjects are shown on the recommendation part.

Modern technologies of fabrication and testing of large convex secondary mirrors

Oh, Chang Jin, Lowman, Andrew E., Dubin, Matt, Smith, Greg, Frater, Eric, Zhao, Chunyu, Burge, James H. 22 July 2016 (has links)
Modern large telescopes such as TAO, LSST, TMT and EELT require 0.9m-4m monolithic convex secondary mirrors. The fabrication and testing of these large convex secondary mirrors of astronomical telescopes is getting challenging as the aperture of the mirror is getting bigger. The biggest challenge to fabricate these large convex aspheric mirrors is to measure the surface figure to a few nanometers, while maintaining the testing and fabrication cycle to be efficient to minimize the downtime. For the last a couple of decades there was huge advancement in the metrology and fabrication of large aspheric secondary mirrors. College of Optical Sciences in the University Arizona developed a full fabrication and metrology process with extremely high accuracy and efficiency for manufacturing the large convex secondary mirrors. In this paper modern metrology systems including Swing-Arm Optical Coordinate Measuring System (SOCMM) which is comparable to Interferometry and a Sub-aperture stitching interferometry scalable to a several meters have been presented. Also a Computer Controlled Fabrication Process which produces extremely fine surface figure and finish has been demonstrated. These most recent development has been applied to the fabrication and testing of 0.9m aspheric convex secondary mirror for the Tokyo Atacama Observatory's 6.5m telescope and the result has been presented.

Model for Long-range Correlations in DNA Sequences

Allegrini, Paolo 12 1900 (has links)
We address the problem of the DNA sequences developing a "dynamical" method based on the assumption that the statistical properties of DNA paths are determined by the joint action of two processes, one deterministic, with long-range correlations, and the other random and delta correlated. The generator of the deterministic evolution is a nonlinear map, belonging to a class of maps recently tailored to mimic the processes of weak chaos responsible for the birth of anomalous diffusion. It is assumed that the deterministic process corresponds to unknown biological rules which determine the DNA path, whereas the noise mimics the influence of an infinite-dimensional environment on the biological process under study. We prove that the resulting diffusion process, if the effect of the random process is neglected, is an a-stable Levy process with 1 < a < 2. We also show that, if the diffusion process is determined by the joint action of the deterministic and the random process, the correlation effects of the "deterministic dynamics" are cancelled on the short-range scale, but show up in the long-range one. We denote our prescription to generate statistical sequences as the Copying Mistake Map (CMM). We carry out our analysis of several DNA sequences, and of their CMM realizations, with a variety of techniques, and we especially focus on a method of regression to equilibrium, which we call the Onsager Analysis. With these techniques we establish the statistical equivalence of the real DNA sequences with their CMM realizations. We show that long-range correlations are present in exons as well as in introns, but are difficult to detect, since the exon "dynamics" is shown to be determined by theentaglement of three distinct and independent CMM's. Finally we study the validity of the stationary assumption in DNA sequences and we discuss a biological model for the short-range random process based on a folding mechanism of the nucleic acid in the cell nucleus.

The processes of software development: an investigation about quality

Segoria, Angelita Moutin 06 August 2001 (has links)
As technology developments becomes more integrated with everyday business activities, the search for quality has become more important than ever in today\'s organizations. For Brazilian companies that develop software, the quality of the final product is directly related to the quality of its development process. Related to the software quality, the CMM (Capabllity Maturity Model) developed by the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University, is a mo dei that assist companies in the evaluation of its current software development process and enables improvements for this process. This model presents five growing levels of maturity: initial, repeatable, defined, managed and in optimizing. The main goal of this work is to extend through an investigation the state of art of software quality engineering, and to apply the principies and practices of the Second Level of the CMM in a small Brazilian company.
