Influência dos parâmetros reacionais e da composição dos transportadores de oxigênio, aplicáveis aos processos de combustão e reforma do metano, com recirculação química / Influence of the reaction parameters and composition of oxygen carriers, applicable to the processes of chemical looping combustion and chemical looping reforming of methaneRenato Dias Barbosa 10 December 2014 (has links)
Driven by the demand for clean energy sources, arise chemical-looping combustion - CLC, and chemical-looping reforming - CLR. CLC and CLR are chemical processes for oxidation of gaseous hydrocarbons. Both of them use the action of catalysts, here called oxygen carriers (OC), which transfers oxygen from the air to the fuel (in this case methane), avoiding the direct contact between the two gases for various reasons. The OC\'s are composed of metal oxides in the form of fine power, circle continuously between two fluidized bed reactors (fuel reactor and air reactor), suffering successive cycles of reduction and oxidation. The two processes differ in relation to the products; the aim of CLC is generation of energy (heat), through the complete oxidation of the fuel, resulting in a mixture of CO2 and H2O, which can be easily separated by condensation. In the case of CLR, the oxidation occurs partially, resulting in synthesis gas, a mixture of H2 and CO. The CLC processes shows advantages when compared to other traditional processes for capture of CO2, because it is not necessary to use secondary processes for gas separation, saving energy, besides the fact of no NOx is generated. This work describes the preparation of two series of materials via dry impregnation, which are composed of 2, 4 and 8% w/w niobium oxide or nickel oxide, supported on commercial alumina, with high specific surface area. The materials were characterized by the techniques of helium pycnometry, nitrogen volumetry, mercury intrusion porosimetry, DRX, MEV, TPR 5% H2/N2 analyzed with TCD in ChemBet, TPR 5% CH4/Ar and TPO 5% O2/Ar, being the changes in mass and heat analyzed in a thermogravimetric balance (TGA/DSC) coupled to a mass spectrometer permitting the analysis of the generated gases. The different oxygen carriers were tested in a fixed bed reactor, evaluated in different experimental conditions, such as operation temperature, flow rate of gaseous reactants, methane concentrations, addition of CO2 and H2O to the fuel. The products of the reaction in the fixed bed reactor were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The results show that: the carbon deposits over the catalysts can be drastically reduced by addition of oxidizing mixture together to the fuel and these studied oxides have a potential industrial application, showing selectivity to reforming of methane with consecutive synthesis gas production.

Shaping Macroporous Ceramics : templated synthesis, X-ray tomography and permeabilityAndersson, Linnéa January 2011 (has links)
Macroporous ceramic materials have found widespread technological application ranging from particulate filters in diesel engines, tissue engineering scaffolds, and as support materials in carbon capture processes. This thesis demonstrates how the pore space of macroporous alumina can be manipulated, analysed in three-dimensions (3D) using visualisation techniques, and functionalised with a CO2-adsorbing material. A novel method was developed to produce macroporous alumina materials: by combining sacrificial templating with thermally expandable polymeric microspheres and gel-casting of an alumina suspension. This method offers a versatile production of macroporous ceramics in which the level of porosity and the pore size distribution can easily be altered by varying the amount and type of spheres. The permeability to fluid flow could be regulated by controlling the connectivity of the pore space and the size of the smallest constrictions between the pores. Sacrificial templating with particle-coated expandable spheres significantly increased the fraction of isolated pore clusters and reduced both the sizes and the numbers of connections between neighbouring pores, compared to templating with un-coated spheres. The macroporous alumina materials were characterised with X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT). The 3D data-sets obtained by X-ray μ-CT were used to calculate the spatial variation in porosity, the throat and pore size distributions and to calculate the permeability to fluid flow. The throat and pore size distributions were also able to be accurately quantified in only one extrusion and intrusion cycle with water-based porosimetry; a relatively novel and simple characterisation technique. The pore walls of the macroporous alumina materials were also coated with zeolite films by a colloidal processing technique. The CO2-uptake of the coated alumina materials and of hierarchically porous monoliths of zeolites was evaluated and compared. / As the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Submitted.

Economic Evaluation of an Advanced Super Critical Oxy-Coal Power Plant with CO2 CaptureBeigzadeh, Ashkan January 2009 (has links)
Today’s carbon constrained world with its increasing demand for cheap energy and a fossil fuel intensive fleet of power producers is making carbon capture and storage (CCS) desirable. Several CCS technologies are under investigation by various research and development groups globally. One of the more promising technologies is oxy-fuel combustion, since it produces a CO2 rich flue gas which requires minor processing to meet storage condition requirements. In this study the economics of an advanced super critical oxy-coal power plant burning lignite, simulated in-house was assessed. A robust and user-friendly financial tool box has been developed with commonly acceptable default parameter settings. Capital, operation and maintenance costs were estimated along with corresponding levelized cost of electricity and CO2 avoidance costs calculated using the detailed financial model developed. A levelized cost of electricity of 131 $/MWhrnet along with a levelized CO2 avoidance cost of 64 $/tonne was estimated for an ASC oxy-coal power plant with CO2 capture. Also a levelized cost of electricity of 83 $/MWhrnet was estimated for an ASC air-fired coal power plant without CO2 capture capabilities as the base plant. The price of electricity was observed to increase from 83 $/MWhrnet to 131 $/MWhrnet translating into a 57% increase. The sensitivity of the overall economics of the process was assessed to several parameters. The overall economics was found sensitive to the choice chemical engineering plant cost index (CEPCI), capacity factor, size of power plant, debt ratio, fuel price, interest rate, and construction duration.

Etude du captage post-combustion du co2 grâce à un procédé vsa (vacuum swing adsorption) avec de nouveaux adsorbants / Study of CO2 post-combustion capture by means of a VSA (Vacuum Swing Adsorption) process with new adsorbentsGuilhamassé, François 09 July 2013 (has links)
To deal with the CO2 emissions increase in the atmosphere due to electricity production, CO2 post-combustion capture by VSA process is a promising solution. The adsorbents used in this study are impregnated TEPA on SiO2, lanthanide oxides and the MOF (Metal Organic Frameworks) SIM-1. For each adsorbent, a study of breakthrough and regeneration was carried out from a feed composed of 15%vol CO2 and N2. From these experiments, the cyclic operating conditions of VSA have been established (short duration phases, no purge). Cyclic performances are compared to that of the absorption process with monoethenolamine. The desorbate purity varies from 89.2% to 97.2%vol according to adsorbent and operating conditions. It is less than that obtained with absorption process (99%vol) but it is correct for transport and storage. The recovery varies from 87.2% to 94.2% (absorption: 98%). The energy consumption is less than that the process with the MEA (from 1.53 to 3.45 MJ.kgCO2 1 for our process and 3.7 MJ.kgCO2 1 for absorption). . Finally, the productivity is of the same order of magnitude as that of other VSA processes from literature. With the numerical model, a local study of the adsorber was carried out. Afterwards, through a parametric study, cycle optimal conditions were determined. The cycle results highlighted comparable performances with the other VSA processes from literature. Moreover, our process needs less energy than absorption process but the desorbate purity and CO2 recovery remain lower.

An oxygen carrier (NiO/NiAl2O4) is used to deliver oxygen during the combustion of methane. It is then regenerated by air. The oxygen carrier material degrades over time, which increases the costs of the process and reduces its performance. The present study aims at determining the impacts of thermal and chemical phenomena on the oxygen carrier degradations. The reaction mechanisms corresponding to the reduction and oxidation of the oxygen carrier are determined and validated through experimental studies and the modeling of a continuously auto-stirred tank reactor (CASTR) and a plug flow reactor. The importance of controlling the quantity of deposited carbon in the process is illustrated. Then, the kinetic parameters of the reactions representing the reduction of nickel oxide are determined with an original model of the CASTR and validated in the plug flow reactor. The interest of using the CASTR for the determination of kinetic constants of the reactions involved in CLC process is presented. The obtained parameters give a good description of all reactions even if additional work is required to obtain a better precision of the results. Finally, a degradation mechanism of the oxygen carrier has been proposed. This mechanism describes the large production of fine particles separated from the grains and their role in the observed agglomeration phenomena. The support material, supposed to be inert, provides some of its oxygen. The methodology developed in this work could be adapted for the analysis and the characterization of other oxygen-carriers
