Dvě tváře ZOO - vnímání zoologických zahrad z pohledu jejich příznivců a odpůrců / Two faces of ZOO - perception of zoos from the view of their supporters and opponents

Tempírová, Lenka January 2013 (has links)
Two faces of ZOO Perception of zoos from the view of their supporters and opponents The main topic of this thesis is a role of zoological gardens in the modern society, especially their importance to conservation of biodiversity as well as to progress in public education. I was interested not only in the opinions and the attitudes of the supporters of zoological gardens, but also in views of their opponents as the opposite side. In the case of the opponents I wanted to reveal if their criticism of zoos is based on negative emotions (bad feeling from breeding animals in captivity and thinking about their rights to freedom) or rise from real inadequacies (for example bad living conditions of animals). So in the theoretical part of the thesis I was concerned about contributions of zoological gardens in many ways as well as about their limitations, mostly mentioned by their opponents. To be more precise in drawing conclusions I made my own empirical research which was based on questionnaires and interviews with directors of certain zoos in the Czech Republic. The main aim of my research was not only a usual opinion poll, but also a detection of differences in opinions and personal characteristics between supporters and opponents of zoos. I also wanted to find out which aspects of zoos are highly...

V zajetí. Díla Hanse Schiltbergera, Jiřího Uherského a Konstantina Mihailoviće jako svědectví o hledání identity a kulturní integraci v muslimském světě / Captives. The works of Johann Schiltberger, George of Hungary and Konstantin Mihailović as testimonies about late medieval search for identity and cultural integration in the Muslim world

Captives. The works of Johannes Schiltberger, George of Hungary and Konstantin Mihailović as testimonies about late medieval search for identity and cultural integration in the Muslim world Bc. Karolina Srncová The master's thesis enquires into the phenomenon of late medieval reflection on Muslim society in captivity narratives, treatises and memoirs from the pen of former Christian captives. Through a comparison of testimonies by three Europeans, who spent long years in Ottoman or Tatar captivity, the thesis investigates the process of their integration in the Muslim world, their perception of this world, and the notion of it they kept after their return to Christian Europe. Apart from the literary reflection on the other the thesis also pursues authors themselves - how they perceived and constructed their cultural identity in the strange environment, what long-term modus vivendi they employed and by what narratives they tried to present their infidel past back in their homeland. Thus the work aims to contribute to our notion of the Christian-Ottoman encounters in the 15th century, but also to consider the cultural adaptability of late medieval man and the role of captives, men between two worlds, who had to cope with the demands of such an adaptation.

“Emancipation from that Degrading Yoke”: Thomas Jefferson, William Eaton and “Barbary Piracy” from 1784 to 1805

Meyers, Stacy 04 August 2011 (has links)
The following essay examines the image of "Barbary piracy" created by two prominent political figures, Thomas Jefferson and William Eaton, and by the American public from 1784 to 1805, and how those images shaped the policy of the American-Barbary War. Eaton‟s Orientalist approach to describing piracy and the North African population limited his views of this region, thus reducing the American conflict to the annihilation of animalistic "brutes." Jefferson‟s practical approach to describing piracy and the North African population focused on emancipating the region from the corrupting influence of greed, allowing him the necessary flexibility to solve the conflict by either by military force or with peace treaties, whichever was necessary. I will show the impact that categorizing piracy as either the result of a depraved society or as a corrupting force had on both American perceptions of the North Africa people and on the outcome of the American-Barbary War.

Estudo endócrino não invasivo e comportamental da gestação, parto e lactação da jaguatirica (Leopardus pardalis) em cativeiro / Noninvasive endocrine and behavioral study of the pregnancy, birth and lactation of ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) in captivity

Adania, Cristina Harumi 26 November 2009 (has links)
The longitudinal profiles of the sexual steroid\'s metabolites, progesterone and estrogen, and glucocorticoids were analyzed for 22 events (pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding) of 8 ocelots kept in captivity. Three events came from the Embryo Transfer (TE) and were compared against the ones that were gestated by natural fertilization. The statistical analysis demonstrated that the differences were highly significative during the initial (P<0001) and middle stages (P< 0,007) of pregnancy and lactation (P<0,0015) periods for the progesterone metabolites. The descriptive analysis suggests a ovarian activity for the species during the lactation period, once detected the estrogen metabolites peaks during some events. A study was also performed, concerning the maternal behavior of 3 female through video-monitoring of the first months of lactation (n=3989,5 hours observed). The species that were kept in captivity spent more time resting and caring the puppy, entering it\'s shelter between 5:00h and 8:00h (61,3%) and there staying during 8 hours average. Other behavior analysis suggests that the stress level is a predominant fact in the success of the establishment of the puppy. A behavior variable performed by the female, by entering the shelter for a repeated number of times was linked to the stress level, being possible to assess the adrenal response by the secretion of glucorticoids and perform it\'s phisiological validation. It is expected by this means, a contribution for a change in the critical scene of the population that is kept in captivity, considering the puppies\' low birth rate and high mortality rate, specially during it\'s first months.

Povos de terra e água:a comunidade pesqueira Canto do Mangue, Canguaretama (RN) - Brasil. / Peoples of land and water: the fishing community Canto do Mangue, Canguaretama (RN) – Brazil.

Silva, Márcia Regina da 29 June 2004 (has links)
The objective of this research was to analyze the changes occurred in the conditions of life in the human population, at community Canto do Mangue in Canguaretama (RN), and also their possible relationships with the introduction of the shrimp creation in captivity after 1980. Techniques of qualitative research were used (documentary analysis, interviews and observation in locus ) and quantitative (analysis of central trend, dispersion and correlation). It was evidenced that the occurred alterations in the local space are associated to the pressures caused by factors of external and internal order, such as implantation and expansion of the creation of shrimp in captivity projects. This led to the advance of the real estate speculation and intensified the deforestation of mangroves areas at the estuary of the river Curimataú/Cunhaú. It contributed to the abandon of the agriculture of subsistence in this community, as well as of handcraft fishing activity. Consequently, there was a loss of knowing traditional in the accomplishment of this activity. It was still verified that alterations in the use of territory and the resources threaten biodiversity and have contributed to the reduction of fishing supplies boats of the community of Canguaretama and consequently, the decrease of the quantity of shrimp (Ucides cardatus) at Canto do Mangue. The results allowed to conclude that the production in wide scale inside market economy, it disrespects the search of balance in the territorial configurations. Thus, the environmental disturbances caused by the shrimp creation of in captivity have social and cultural consequences, affecting directly the way of life of the Canto do Mangue inhabitants. The shrimp companies have employed part of the fishermen that are leaving the fishing activities, however the low level of scholarship and old age are factors that leave them out of team of employees of these companies. Therefore, conditions should be created to make possible to conciliate the shrimp creation in captivity and sustentability of the region.

Discours puritain et voix indienne dans les récits de captivité nord-américains des dix-septième et dix-huitième siècles / Puritan Discourse and Indian Voice in Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century North American Captivity Narratives

Messara, Dahia 12 April 2013 (has links)
This study is dedicated to the analysis of seventeenth-and early eighteenth-century Puritan discourse and the way in which the agency of Indian appears in writings penned by the Puritans, a prominent subsection of which falls under the genre known as Indian Captivity Narrative. My main intention was to go beyond the initial characterization of captivity narratives and claim that these texts are not only about the actual physical and moral experience of the white Christian captives among the Indians, but also deal with more abstract and less often addressed forms of captivity. One such (less immediately obvious) form of captivity is, metaphorically speaking, that of the Indian “voice” in white narratives. This study therefore addresses the following questions: How does the Indian voice come across in such prose? What kinds of discourse do Mary Rowlandson, Hannah Swarton, and other former captives attribute to their former abductors? How do these former captives render and reconstruct dialogues that purportedly occurred between them and their Indian captors? This presentation of the Indian voice is not only conditioned by the former captive’s attitude (i.e., by the author’s voice), but it is also altered by the specific bias of those in charge of controlling the contents of the narrative, i.e., the editors and the publishers, such as Cotton and Increase Mather, who were the most influential representatives of the political and religious establishment of the time.

Gefreiter Wildermuth und seine Freundin Germaine

Peters, Friedrich Ernst January 2012 (has links)
