We discussed the Brazilian intellectual scene of the 1920s and 1930s, also the decadence of the analysis based on the variables of race, geographical environment and climate, emphasizing the ascent of new approaches, structured cultural diversity in the capitalist economy and exclusionary. We use the concept of racialism, understanding it as any narrative that classifies the types of people in a racial criterion / Este ensaio discute a tem?tica racial, enfatizando a concep??o racial presente no livro Casa-Grande & Senzala. Reconfiguring nation, race, and plantation culture in Freyre and Faulkner

Santos-Neves, Miguel Edward 13 November 2013 (has links)
Gilberto Freyre's Casa-grande & senzala (1933) (The Masters and the Slaves) and William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! (1936) revisit and reevaluate Romantic notions of history, especially national progress and attendant accounts of racial purity and whiteness of "the people." The plantation home emerges in their texts as the common locus of historical and cultural experiences and as the principle symbol and metaphor for the domination of colonial forces. This dissertation explores how Freyre and Faulkner both take up the contemporary issue of miscegenation as the primary theme in their respective works. They elaborate this theme and explore its ramifications through the central, grounding image of the plantation home, which they approach through a historical sensibility and from a historical perspective. Freyre and Faulkner work from within paradigms from Europe to rewrite them, as they re-think the legacies of colonialism and of the plantation organization in non-national, non-ethnic, non-Hegelian, generative, deterministic terms. Their works seek to offer viable and independent counter-discourses to the dominant European cultural models -- new, non-nationalist narratives of historical destiny based on culture and economics rather than on any overarching political-historical destiny, as the epics of Europe's nations had been told in the era. This dissertation hopes to contribute to the scholarship that questions the essentialist notions of race and nation, as they were conceived on the plantation in rural regions of the New World. This project recovers a transnational tradition of political opposition -- a tradition that roots itself in the anthropology of experience rather than in the determinism of origin and inheritance. It will also argue for disciplinary realignments in the literature of the Americas, by proposing that further efforts be made to study the New World plantation and its effective geography. On the basis of the discussion on Faulkner, Southern literature ought to observe a new division between the Upper South and the Lower South, demarcated by the border between North and South Carolina, on the basis of the demographics, economics, and, in turn, self-understanding of these respective regions. / text

No. of bitstreams: 1 Adelson Florêncio de Barros.pdf: 3160192 bytes, checksum: 3d5a8238eccbae5665c7432dab1c2a9c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-03-12 / This dissertation, based on the Critical Discourse Analysis, thematizes the social roles of the masters and their slaves in Casa Grande & Senzala. It is justified, for this work is studied and criticized by social scientists and not by a critical vision of the discourse. It is a textual-discursive analysis of this work. There are several published works, about this work, with sociological, anthropological, among others. The research is justified, because it aims to answer: Is the author of Casa Grande & Senzala a conservative enslaver or revolutionary abolitionist? The general objective is to contribute to the discursive studies of the work in question and to specific ones: 1. To verify, in Brazilian historiographical texts, which and how many social roles the black slaves did represent socially; 2. To ascertain which and how many social roles the slaves represent in the said work, comparing them with those of historiography, multimodal texts and newspaper advertisements; 3. Analyze the point of view projected by the author when focusing on slavery in the sugar zone of Pernambuco. The proposed research is qualitative and documental, with theoretical-analytical procedure. The results indicate that the ideological and cultural values that guide Freyre in writing this work result from the patron saint values of sugar planter from Pernambuco, aiming to construct the miscegenated origins of Brazilian culture and are those that are archived in his social memory, from the family institution. Therefore, they are conservative and enslaved values. The hypothesis of the investigation proved to be adequate, since Freyre is guided by an ideology of Pernambuco sugarcane rural power, canceling the cruelty, sadism and excessive exploitation of the slave labor force and privileges the role of the female slave, transmitter of Afro Brazilian cultural miscegenation, in order to build the myth of the sensuality of the black woman / Esta tese, fundamentada na Análise Crítica do Discurso, tematiza os papéis sociais dos senhores e seus escravos em Casa-Grande & senzala.

Gilberto Freyre is the main elaborator of the set of ideas concerning Northeast region. This construction - politicai and intellectual one at the same time - brings him about to the past period of the mentioned region, in search of the lost glory and pomp. From this (re) construction the intellectual arises, with a manorial world perspective, ontologically (and organically) related to the sugar plant and to the owner's house worlds. In his sociological interpretation texts written since the beginning of 20's, from the past century, there are already the main themes which will be in José Lins do Rego's novéis written in the following decade, by consubstantiating, this way, a rich aesthetic act of unfolding about the cited regionalism and, at the same time, an intersection between Sociology and Literature that we studied by dealing with essays, novéis and letters from these two authors which mix up Sociology and novel, concepts. fondness and ideologies under an understanding which varies from a nostalgic one to a dramatic or empathic one about a sociability that belongs to the immemorial roots of our society. Thafs our theme.

O pensamento social, o Brasil e a religião

Silva, Wilson Santana 25 November 2009 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Wilson Santana Silva.pdf: 2376159 bytes, checksum: a5d25bf6418c1a95c8fa47ab78693d4e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-11-25 / The Civil Government with the use of Padroado , exerted unlimited power over ecclesiastic affairs, changing the Brazilian Catholic Church into an ordinary State department, or a branch of the secular government. That relationship had caused tension between those two spheres, secular government and ecclesiastical government in the main stages of development of the country. Within these parameters, not always in a visible way, brazilian culture has been shaped. Aiming at a critic comprehension of these cultural developments, the figure of the intellectual has been analysed in that process. Besides the study of intellectuals, in that process our goal was to describe the new ideas being established in Brazil, specially in the academy. Comte, Marx and Weber, through their works, had a powerfull influence on brazilian thought. The founding of the University of São Paulo (USP) is representative of the power of these new ideas and their reception by our intelectuals in 1934. This thesis analysed how religion was seen in the academies and specially by some thinkers who wrote classics on the field both of Human and Social Sciences. The works Casa Grande & Senzala, Raízes do Brasil e Formação do Brasil Contemporâneo and their authors Gilberto Freyre, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda e Caio Prado Júnior, respectively, were discussed in order to identify the role of religion and its value to create a solid and clear scientific vision of Brazil. The Thesis analyses the development of a social thinking of Portuguese matrix, and its growth in Brazil. The question of religion in Brazil is complex and varied. A questão religiosa no Brasil é bastante complexa e variada.
