Handskriftskatalogisering inpå livet : En undersökning av de kategorier som används vid stambokskatalogisering / Cataloging of manuscripts up close : A study of the categories used when cataloguing alba amicorum

Solling, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate if three scientific articles concerning the cataloguing of alba amicorum written in the 1980’s and early 1990’s had any influence on the cataloguing of alba amicorum. Another purpose is to investigate the similarities and differences between the catalogues from the late 1980’s and onward. The focus lies on the categories used when cataloguing the alba. Alba amicorum are catalogued on two levels: on a general level, i.e. the album as a whole is catalogued and in addition all the inscriptions in the album are cata-logued separately, the so-called leaf cataloguing. The study uses a comparative method. First the three scientific articles are compared with each other, then nine catalogues of alba amicorum from 1988 and onward, five printed and four online ones, are investigated regarding which categories are used respectively not used in the different catalogues. Then the categories pro-posed in the scientific articles are compared with the ones used in the catalogues. One result of the study is that the differences in the cataloguing on the general level between the printed catalogues are small but that the variation is larger amongst the online ones. The same patterns cannot be seen regarding the leaf cataloguing; here the variation between the catalogues is generally somewhat larger but the most central categories can be found in all catalogues. Another result is that some of the categories in the cata-logues reflect the printed or online form of the catalogue. The study shows that it is hard to define exactly which influence the scientific articles had on the catalogues but that it probably hasn’t been that large. Many of the categories occurring in the catalogues have been used when cataloguing alba amicorum since the early 1900’s. Maybe one could say that the alba themselves are con-stituted in such a way that it is more or less natural which categories should be used when cataloguing them. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

January 2014 (has links)
Abstract: The growing availability of geospatial data, the diversity of geographic information environments and the continuous technological advances have enabled the development of methods and applications for descriptive treatment. That is the case of metadata standards allowing new practical approaches, especially in a digital environment. Government agencies, as major producers of cartographic material, are demanded to publish it in an open, transparent and machine-processable form. The access and use of these resources depend on proper standardization and technical specifications. Topographic maps are resources resulting from cartographic techniques and constitute reference items, with attributes and specificities that represent the territory, and are essential for public policies. The occurrence of various metadata standards indicates that the cartographic materials require studies about formats' compatibility and adequacy of description schemes. From the definition of metadata record, in order to meet specific requirements, emerges the question of: how to efficiently describe the cartographic materials and, more specifically, digital topographic maps? The thesis is that the presentation of digital topographic maps in an accessible format, with appropriate and unambiguous descriptions, facilitates their identification and location and, ultimately, its use. The proposition of this thesis is to analyze the theoretical Cataloguing framework that guides the standardized construction, in order to provide the fundamental principles and values to maps registry. The main goal is to contribute to the proper description and quality of Topographic Maps to meet the specific requisites and provide interoperability. In order to achieve this goal, analyses were made about the description scheme of the MGB to AACR2r profiles and the correspondence between the MGB profile and the MARC 21 format. As a result, a systematization of the relationships between... / Doutor

Yassuda, Silvia Nathaly. January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: The museum is a unit of information that can provide various types of documentary support, such as the iconography, the three-dimensional and the bibliographic. The museum documentation works with treatment of collections information, from the registration until the dissemination of information, leaving it to operate a system that attends the information demand of its public. In this regard, we point out the need for the use of languages documented in the construction of systems documentary museum, offering to maximize the recovery and use of information. Some peculiarities of the documentation in museums must be met in order to justify the lack of standardization in the record of collections. Within the museum documentation, the research focuses on the cataloging of objects in museums as action mediator between the public and the body, helping in knowledge construction and preservation of memory. Thus, there was a study of the Museu Paulista aiming to subsidize the general documentary procedures and practices of museums with reflections from the Theory of Documentation. As to the specific objectives intended to reflect on the role of documentation in the museum informacional context and observe how the descriptive representation is used in the Museu Paulista. / Mestre

Facilitating Retrieval of Sound Recordings for Use By Professionals Treating Children with Asperger's Syndrome

Dena L Belvin 1 August 2007 (has links)
Since the 1970s, music librarians have been discussing the challenges of cataloging music media. In the 1990s, they began work on a Music Thesaurus to provide a multi-faceted approach to indexing, cataloging, and retrieving music media. In 1999 Indiana University proposed a digital music library, to allow for better indexing and retrieval in addition to content-based music retrieval. In 2000, a commercial venture, The Music Genome Project ©, began cataloging sound recordings of popular music by hundreds of musical characteristics and has created a user interface that allows listeners to enter the title and artist of a certain piece of music and receive recommendations for similar music to then purchase via Pandora.com. The following paper will address the question: how might current analyzing and classifying methods be used to provide additional indexing that facilitates retrieval and use of sound recordings by special populations, specifically professionals treating children with Asperger’s syndrome?

Sex and Gender in the Library of Congress Subject Headings, 1988-2003

Tracy Waterman 12 April 2004 (has links)
The problem of linguistic and structural bias in the subject vocabularies used by libraries has been the subject of varying degrees of scrutiny in the cataloging literature of the past several decades. This study examines the Library of Congress subject headings involving sex and gender from 1988, 1993, and 2003. Changes to the headings are tracked and analyzed. Comparisons are made between recommendations made in the literature and changes to the subject vocabulary; the impact of the changes on the appearance of bias on the basis of sex and gender in library catalogs is discussed.

The Catalog as Interpretative Tool : Bibliographic Relationships in Resource Description and Access (RDA), with Special Regard to Problems of Operationalization

Wallheim, Henrik January 2013 (has links)
The new cataloging code Resource Description and Access (RDA) provides a system of instructions for recording relationships between related resources by means of a controlled vocabulary of relationship designators. The purpose of this two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies is to examine the construction of this system, as well as its theoretical foundation. One theoretical point of departure is the necessity of operational definitions for consistent identification of bibliographic relationships. Another such point of departure is that the theoretical model on which RDA is based (the FRBR model) is not a complete description of the bibliographic universe, but merely a limited representation of a set of assumptions about that universe. The thesis first examines Barbara B. Tillett's and Richard P. Smiraglia's theories and taxonomies of bibliographic relationships. The analysis shows that, in spite of their claims to provide a theoretical basis for consistent treatment of bibliographic relationships, neither Tillett nor Smiraglia offers operationally applicable definitions. The thesis then turns to RDA in order to examine the instructions and the list of relationship designators. After an introductory survey of RDA chapters 24 to 28, the possibility to record relationship designators at different entity levels is discussed. Remarkably, RDA neither provides instructions for how to choose between the entity levels, nor does it point out what this choice signifies. Finally, a selection of relationship designators representing content relationships is examined. The selected designators are analysed and compared to corresponding categories in literary theorist Gérard Genette's attempt to classify intertextual relationships. The analysis shows that though some of the selected designators are satisfactorily operationalized, most are not.

Redesign of Library Workflows: Experimental Models for Electronic Resource Description

Calhoun, Karen January 2000 (has links)
This paper explores the potential for and progress of a gradual transition from a highly centralized model for cataloging to an iterative, collaborative, and broadly distributed model for electronic resource description. The author's purpose is to alert library managers to some experiments underway and to help them conceptualize new methods for defining, planning, and leading the e-resource description process under moderate to severe time and staffing constraints. To build a coherent library system for discovery and retrieval of networked resources, librarians and technologists are experimenting with team-based efforts and new workflows for metadata creation. In an emerging new service model for e-resource description, metadata can come from selectors, public service librarians, information technology staff, authors, vendors, publishers, and catalogers. Arguing that e-resource description demands a level of cross-functional collaboration and creative problem-solving that is often constrained by libraries' functional organizational structures, the author calls for reuniting functional groups into virtual teams that can integrate the e-resource description process, speed up operations, and provide better service. The paper includes an examination of the traditional division of labor for producing catalogs and bibliographies, a discussion of experiments that deploy a widely distributed e-resource description process (e.g., the use of CORC at Cornell and Brown), and an exploration of the results of a brief study of selected ARL libraries' e-resource discovery systems.

William Stetson Merrill and Bricolage for Information Studies

Coleman, Anita Sundaram January 2006 (has links)
This is a preprint published in Journal of Documentation 62 (4): 462-481. Purpose: This paper examines William Stetson Merrill, the compiler of A Code for Classifiers and a Newberry Library employee (1889-1930) in an attempt to glean lessons for modern information studies from an early librarianâ s career. Methodology/Approach: Merrillâ s career at the Newberry Library and three editions of the Code are examined using historical, bibliographic, and conceptual methods. Primary and secondary sources in archives and libraries are reviewed to provide insight into Merrillâ s life at the Newberry and his attempts to develop or modify tools to solve the knowledge organization problems he faced. The concept of bricolage, developed by Levi-Strauss to explain modalities of thinking, is applied to Merrillâ s career. Excerpts from his works and reminisces are used to explain Merrill as a bricoleur and highlight the characteristics of bricolage. Research Implications and Limitations: Findings show that Merrill worked collaboratively to collocate and integrate a variety of ideas from a diverse group of librarians such as Cutter, Pettee, Poole, Kelley, Rudolph, and Fellows. Bliss and Ranganathan were aware of the Code but the extent to which they were influenced by it remains to be explored. Although this is an anachronistic evaluation, Merrill serves as an example of the archetypal information scientist who improvises and integrates methods from bibliography, cataloging, classification, and indexing to solve problems of information retrieval and design usable information products and services for human consumption. Originality/Value of Paper: Bricolage offers great potential to information practitioners and researchers today as we continue to try and find user-centered solutions to the problems of digital information organization and services. Paper Type: Research paper
