"We're Not Going to Talk About That:" A Qualitative Case Study of Three Elementary Teachers' Experiences Integrating Literacy and Social Studies

Powell, Rebecca L. 05 April 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this interpretive, qualitative multi-case study (Merriam, 2001; Stake, 1995) was to describe the experiences of three elementary classroom teachers as they integrated literacy and social studies during their literacy instruction. This study was grounded in an interpretivist paradigm and a theoretical lens of symbolic interactionism. The guiding questions were: What are the experiences of three elementary teachers when integrating literacy and social studies instruction? What information do teachers use when making decisions about integrated instruction? How do teachers’ beliefs align with their practices? How do teachers organize, plan for, and provide integrated instruction, including how they use the core English/Language Arts programs and core social studies programs? In what ways, if any, do teachers use disciplinary literacy strategies to support social studies instruction? I collected data from teachers in kindergarten, third grade, and fifth grade classrooms in a K-8 Title One school. Data included audio-recorded one-on-one semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, lesson plans, photographs, and my researcher journal. I began data analysis through inductive coding of each interview and observation, and then coded each through deductive analysis using Cunningham and Allington’s (2011) pillars of effective literacy instruction. I deductively coded the data using the six proven practices for effective civic learning based on the National Center for Learning and Civic Engagement (NCLCE, Guilfoile & Delander, 2014). Data analysis then moved to the crosswalk I created using the pillars of effective literacy instruction and the NCLCE proven practices. Data analysis concluded with the cross-case analysis. During the data analysis, member checks and three meetings with a peer reviewer occurred. Findings from this study indicate teachers continue to experience conflict between their beliefs and practices, often due to state, district, and school mandates. Additionally, the study findings indicate a desire for focused professional development, both face-to-face and through digital tools, on how to effectively integrate literacy and social studies. Moreover, professional development is needed to support teachers in their use of critical literacy. Findings also indicate that the teachers in this study experienced censorship, imposed by others and themselves. The study concluded with my interpretation of the findings based on the reviewed literature, suggestions for future research, and a crosswalk for professional development to support teachers in planning for effective integrated literacy and social studies instruction. Keywords: elementary social studies, censorship, integrated curriculum, professional development, effective instruction.

Salvador

A Family Affair: The Political Economy of Media Ownership in the Republic of Korea (1998-2012)

Kim, Chunhyo 01 May 2014 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the nature of Korean media giants among members of Asian media conglomerates in the era of media marketization. Since the 1980s, each state in Asia has adopted neoliberal media laws and policies that have made its media systems more market-driven. This neoliberal media reform led to the restructuring of media systems from state-controlled systems to profit-oriented ones and facilitating the emergence of Asian media conglomerates. However, scholarship on the nature of Asian media giants has been sparse in critical media studies. Thus, I conduct a case study to explore the nature of Asian media giants with a focus on the interplay between media ownership and media markets in order to determine the major beneficiaries of Asian media marketization. I focus on the three Korean media conglomerates of Samsung, CJ and JoongAng Ilbo groups during the period from 1998 to 2012 when the Korean state applied the neoliberal media mode to the Korean media systems. Utilizing the theoretical approach of political economy of communication, I examine three points: (1) the relationship between the era of neoliberal media and the structures of four media markets (e.g., advertising, daily newspaper, cable television and film); (2) the interconnections among media expansions, media ownership and informal ties (e.g., blood and marriage ties); and (3) the relationship between the changed structures of those four media markets and corporate censorship of the three chaebol groups. To address these questions, I used both institutional and corporate profiling techniques and then analyzed both governmental and secondary documents, including those covering structures of media markets, media ownership, boards of directors, media expansions and emergent issues in the information and entertainment markets. Consequently, my analysis finds that neoliberal media laws and policies led to forming centralized market structures controlled by chaebol groups with connections to Western media conglomerates and/or foreign capital. Also, I find that the Lee family members used family connections to expand their media businesses and control multiple media operations, thereby becoming the media emperor in Korea. Finally, my analysis shows that a media-oriented ideology has rarely guaranteed free competition among market players but has instead led to increasing the market polarization between a few market controllers and many independent media companies. In other words, my study indicates that the neoliberal media mode allowed family capitalists in Korea with foreign capital to control the structures of media markets.

CRIAÇÃO E REPRESSÃO: CAIO FERNANDO ABREU E A CENSURA NO BRASIL DA SEGURANÇA NACIONAL / CREATION AND REPRESSION: CAIO FERNANDO ABREU AND CENSORSHIP IN BRAZIL OF NATIONAL SECURITY

Bonaldo, Deivis Jhones Garlet 28 February 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study is inserted in jurisdiction of literary studies of comparative literature and social criticism. Accordingly, in addition to find an explanation of aesthetic specificity, we believe in the significant importance of extra-aesthetic in construction of literary text as an object-sign carrying an axiological position and potentially ideological and therefore, the relation between literature and history. It is with this way of understanding that we approach our object of study, the work "O ovo apunhalado" by Caio Fernando Abreu, in context of Brazilian military dictatorship, greatly aiming to elucidate the reasons why certain stories were censored. In order to achieve our purpose, we appealed to theoretical concepts aligned with marxism and the ideas of Bakhtin Circle, as structural and superstructural relations, dialogism, ideological environment, reflection and refraction to a comprehension of context of production and the uniqueness of artistic construction. The understanding of censorship as an integral object-sign of ideological environment that surrounded the writer, we compared vetoed narratives to legislation about censorship, being possible for us to objectify possible reasons that led to prohibition without falling into subjectivism. Thereby, we perceived Caio Fernando Abreu work as a symbolic counterpoint to authoritarianism of military government, especially to express, articulating form and content, unwanted themes by government according to National Security rhetoric. The work is divided in three chapters: the first is devoted to a critical review of critical fortune about the author analyzed and to exposition of dialogism concept; the second one outlines theoretical and methodological bases and the third excels on the construction of plausible explanation for censorship in the book "O ovo apunhalado , making a possible reading of forbidden narratives and comparison with laws regarding censorship.
