AO REDOR DA MESA: A CIRCULAÇÃO DA PALAVRA IMPRESSA NA SEGUNDA METADE DO SÉCULO XVIII LUSITANO

And when the sources are produced by the bibliography itself? The history of the book and the reading exposes this pleasant paradox, and the circulation of books under the control of Portuguese censorship in the second half of the eighteenth century provided a broad documentary collection that allows to analyze the Luso-Brazilian cultures in this context and the attempts to build barriers That would limit these cultures to the understanding of what could or could not be remembered or forgotten. From this documentation, a quantitative analysis will be carried out on the type of books circulating in the Atlantic, disembarking in Rio de Janeiro, time in Oporto and qualitative, giving meaning to the vestiges present in applications that were written to the censorship requesting permissions to be able to do To circulate these books both in their aesthetic product of the official regiemento and the customs acquired by the ordinary action of investigating and controlling, as well as between the lines that indicated behaviors and interests produced by the books in their circulation. The demands of censorship have acquired a paradox that has built up not obedient and honest people as to the rules for transporting or sending books, but people who were part of the legal world at the same time as they smuggled the illegal world of book smuggling. At this juncture the documentation, although most of them require legal book lists, some problems still occur, with some being held at the customs for investigation or even sent to the Bureau because they are forbidden to travel. On paper, the manuscripts translate control based on the Portuguese illustration, of a utilitarian character, which valued scientific development, but at the same time it moved away from the most radical ideas existing in the eighteenth century in Europe, in defense of the Catholic faith and of the royal power . Robert Darnton points out that the tool of censorship, far from being merely the exercise of cutting, suppressing, prohibiting and punishing, served as an endorsement of the world of books, adding positive values that elevated publishing and profit in the book market. In Portugal, as in France, which Darnton studied in the same context, censors participated in the book market, according to Curto, the president of the Real Mesa Censoria of the Pombal period, Manuel do Cenáculo, was also one of the most active consumers of books, Of the most important Lusitanian scholars, as observed by Rui Tavares. It is not by chance that the Cenacle maintained close relations with booksellers like Jorge Rey, who was also a book editor. That is why around the table the books circulated and built roads that led the book market to one of the wealthiest businesses of the eighteenth century, mainly through clandestinity, but also in legality, in view of some lists of books by resident French booksellers In Portugal that are part of the documentation, which contained about two, three hundred books of the most varied titles and were destined for Rio de Janeiro. Of breaking this movement has a sense produced.

Distribuição Inversa Weighted Lindley: propriedades, estimadores e uma aplicação em dados de tempo de falha / The Inverse Weighted Lindley Distribution: properties, estimation and an application on a failure time data

Luiz, Aline Oliva 04 May 2018 (has links)
During the operation of anaircraft for comercial flight of passengers, there are occurrences of failures that can compromise the satisfaction of passengers. For instance, the malfunction of seats or the entertainment system. This problem is very important for the operation in order to maintain customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. Indeed, it is ofmain interesting analysis for diagnosis of failures, which have greater impact on customer satisfaction. The results of such analysis can be used to propose preventive maintenance schemes in order to minimize costs. Based on our analysis, among the 16 major types of failures that occur, 4 types showed to have greatest impacts in the role system. In this sense, the main objective of this work is to describe the failure time of these main components. To achieve that, we set different probability distributions to describe the random behavior of these failures. For one type of failure we showed that there is space for improvement of its probability distribution as the Weibull,Gamma and Log-normal are not the most adequate to describe the random behaviour of such characteristic. Therefore, we propose a new reliability distribution, the so called inverse Weighted Lindley distribution. The mathematical properties and the parameter estimation of the parameters for the proposed distribution are discussed. The new distribution is used to describe the lifetime of one of types of failure. Based on these new results, we propose a preventive maintenance policy to maintain the quality of the main components.

A caneta e a tesoura: dinâmicas e vicissitudes da censura musical no regime militar / Pen and scissors: dynamics and vicissitudes of musical censorship during the military regime

Heredia, Cecília Riquino 08 April 2015 (has links)
Since music is considered one of the performing arts most open to changes in behavior and political patterns, song censorship has singularities that interfere in the production of the censor\'s report and augment the processes experienced by the Censorship Division of Public Entertainment. From a group of documents constituted by organs linked to censorship and censorship legislation, this study intends to examine how the vicissitudes and tensions that are a part of musical censorship activity during the military regime are present in the speech of these technicians and, at the same time, analyze how these documents demonstrate their insertion in the repressive apparatus of the authoritarian State. For this purpose, we propose a new approach to this musical censorship, conducting, alongside qualitative analyses, a serial and quantitative reading of the sources produced by the censorship service, establishing tendencies, repetitions, ruptures and gradual changes in the activity\'s dynamics. These oscillations, aside from reflecting the State repression policies, also shed light on the relationships the technicians developed with the censorship tradition, artists and cultural industry, as well as on the construction of an image of this service as supposedly being missionary and a bastion of morals, to a society increasingly influenced by new values and groups opposing the regime.

Dias, Daniela Cristina Barroso Ferreira 15 February 2016 (has links)
This research is a study of censorship practiced in colonial Brazil, XVII century, from the veto to the book Notícias Curiosas e Necessárias das Cousas do Brasil, of the Simão de Vasconcelos. The approach gives priority to find targets and objectionable themes subtracted in parts of the work, from the constitutive elements of the society of that time. Invest in raising the key issues of colonial society, but mainly on finding the cultural aspects that constitute Catholicism and the Inquisition practices, according to many authors, the institution \"more bloodthirsty and merciless humanity\", with regard to their practices and time of operation. Historically contextualize censorship carried out by the Crown / Church as a political power in the colony and his abrupt interference in culture and communication through conscious practices in favor of the status quo of the institution and the Catholic discourse consolidation in the Portuguese colony, preventing the manifestation of criticism and free mind.

Screen Cleaning: Moral Knowledge and the Politics of Cinema Censorship

Alp, Erin Elif January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation asks how the structure of moral authority and media viewership in America has changed over the course of the 20th century. In order to address this question, I examine the ways in which American films are, and have been, labeled inappropriate or appropriate for public viewership. I ask how censorship, regulation and rating systems work to create and manage moral ambiguity, and what types of ramifications moral ambiguity is thought to have on viewers. I also address the types of problems associated with American cinema over time, and propose several analytical dimensions to capture and unpack the processes of censoring cinema. This framework is built on the notions of filth and moral ambiguity, moral repercussion, a process of responsibilization, and the telos for cinema, all of which influences how an organization interacts with movies and morality. In lapses of symmetry between on- and off-screen worlds, moral ambiguity arises in ways that responsibilize either content controllers or audiences themselves. I show the links between these articulations and how the moral repercussions of exposure to cinema are defined. I also argue that where in the past moral ambiguity was commonly perceived as a dangerous aspect of cinema, especially by censors and Hollywood film production regulators, contemporary movie raters present a film’s moral ambiguity as a resource to the viewer. Moral ambiguity, if probed the right way, can lead to greater awareness of one’s moral boundaries, enabling viewers to effectively censor their viewership practices themselves. Greater responsibility of the viewer is also linked with more transparency and less rigid definitions of filth, moral repercussion, and the overall purpose of media consumption. Censoring cinema was a way in which state censors attempted to shape a “good” civil society, but the notion of how such a society might be achieved through media shifted over the 20th century. By examining the work of Hollywood’s Production Code Authority, New York State censors, pioneering sociologists and educators of the 1930s, the Film Estimate Board of National Organization’s monthly film classification decisions, and contemporary movie ratings at Common Sense Media, I develop several sub-arguments that support the larger argument that moral ambiguity has become a resource as opposed to a danger. In doing so, I expose the connections between the efforts of earlier censors and industry regulators to contemporary constructions of moral authenticity in movie reviews, and highlight in particular the responsibilization of parental audiences. To date, parents are charged not only with monitoring what their children watch, but also with instilling critical viewing skills among their children. This contrasts with previous content control techniques, wherein parents were responsibilized to make decisions for their children but were not expected to foster any specific values or skills in them, and earlier techniques, wherein parents were not responsibilized at all. I end by noting that the contemporary approach to pollution management relies on two conflicting discourses, which have influenced strategies to managing media morality throughout the 20th century. The first focuses on media research and its alleged effects on social behavior, the second on free and intelligent choices by children consumers themselves – but as this dissertation also exemplifies, both registers have echoes in earlier sites and examples of cinematic censorship and efforts to clean the screen.

Discovering Network Control Vulnerabilities and Policies in Evolving Networks

Jermyn, Jill Louise January 2017 (has links)
The range and number of new applications and services are growing at an unprecedented rate. Computer networks need to be able to provide connectivity for these services and meet their constantly changing demands. This requires not only support of new network protocols and security requirements, but often architectural redesigns for long-term improvements to efficiency, speed, throughput, cost, and security. Networks are now facing a drastic increase in size and are required to carry a constantly growing amount of heterogeneous traffic. Unfortunately such dynamism greatly complicates security of not only the end nodes in the network, but also of the nodes of the network itself. To make matters worse, just as applications are being developed at faster and faster rates, attacks are becoming more pervasive and complex. Networks need to be able to understand the impact of these attacks and protect against them. Network control devices, such as routers, firewalls, censorship devices, and base stations, are elements of the network that make decisions on how traffic is handled. Although network control devices are expected to act according to specifications, there can be various reasons why they do not in practice. Protocols could be flawed, ambiguous or incomplete, developers could introduce unintended bugs, or attackers may find vulnerabilities in the devices and exploit them. Malfunction could intentionally or unintentionally threaten the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of end nodes and the data that passes through the network. It can also impact the availability and performance of the control devices themselves and the security policies of the network. The fast-paced evolution and scalability of current and future networks create a dynamic environment for which it is difficult to develop automated tools for testing new protocols and components. At the same time, they make the function of such tools vital for discovering implementation flaws and protocol vulnerabilities as networks become larger and more complex, and as new and potentially unrefined architectures become adopted. This thesis will present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a set of tools designed for understanding implementation of network control nodes and how they react to changes in traffic characteristics as networks evolve. We will first introduce Firecycle, a test bed for analyzing the impact of large-scale attacks and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) traffic on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. We will then discuss Autosonda, a tool for automatically discovering rule implementation and finding triggering traffic features in censorship devices. This thesis provides the following contributions: 1. The design, implementation, and evaluation of two tools to discover models of network control nodes in two scenarios of evolving networks, mobile network and censored internet 2. First existing test bed for analysis of large-scale attacks and impact of traffic scalability on LTE mobile networks 3. First existing test bed for LTE networks that can be scaled to arbitrary size and that deploys traffic models based on real traffic traces taken from a tier-1 operator 4. An analysis of traffic models of various categories of Internet of Things (IoT) devices 5. First study demonstrating the impact of M2M scalability and signaling overload on the packet core of LTE mobile networks 6. A specification for modeling of censorship device decision models 7. A means for automating the discovery of features utilized in censorship device decision models, comparison of these models, and their rule discovery

Numerical simulations of instabilities in general relativity

Kunesch, Markus January 2018 (has links)
General relativity, one of the pillars of our understanding of the universe, has been a remarkably successful theory. It has stood the test of time for more than 100 years and has passed all experimental tests so far. Most recently, the LIGO collaboration made the first-ever direct detection of gravitational waves, confirming a long-standing prediction of general relativity. Despite this, several fundamental mathematical questions remain unanswered, many of which relate to the global existence and the stability of solutions to Einstein's equations. This thesis presents our efforts to use numerical relativity to investigate some of these questions. We present a complete picture of the end points of black ring instabilities in five dimensions. Fat rings collapse to Myers-Perry black holes. For intermediate rings, we discover a previously unknown instability that stretches the ring without changing its thickness and causes it to collapse to a Myers-Perry black hole. Most importantly, however, we find that for very thin rings, the Gregory-Laflamme instability dominates and causes the ring to break. This provides the first concrete evidence that in higher dimensions, the weak cosmic censorship conjecture may be violated even in asymptotically flat spacetimes. For Myers-Perry black holes, we investigate instabilities in five and six dimensions. In six dimensions, we demonstrate that both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric instabilities can cause the black hole to pinch off, and we study the approach to the naked singularity in detail. Another question that has attracted intense interest recently is the instability of anti-de Sitter space. In this thesis, we explore how breaking spherical symmetry in gravitational collapse in anti-de Sitter space affects black hole formation. These findings were made possible by our new open source general relativity code, GRChombo, whose adaptive mesh capabilities allow accurate simulations of phenomena in which new length scales are produced dynamically. In this thesis, we describe GRChombo in detail, and analyse its performance on the latest supercomputers. Furthermore, we outline numerical advances that were necessary for simulating higher dimensional black holes stably and efficiently.

Le Régent du Parnasse : le pouvoir littéraire de Boileau / The Regent of Parnassus : the Literary Power of Boileau

Stambul, Léo 18 November 2017 (has links)
If Boileau is remembered as the legislator of classicism, alive, the poet would rather have introduced himself as the “Regent of Parnassus”, or the literary representative of an absent executive power. Boileau's influence on literature, both tied to and freed from royal authority, but also seen as outrageaously scandalous at that time, seems today to have become a fable tormenting generations of pupils. Real or fantasized, that power, against which loads of Boileau's contemporaries stood up, questions the limits between the secluded literary world and the authors' social integration. We assume that this paradoxical configuration expresses itself through various aspects of Boileau's writing: an outstanding institutional career as the King's historiographer, thanks to which the satirist had never been closer to the body of monarchy; an exceptionally lenient use of violent and nominal satire which triggered numerous quarrels; a theory of the sublime and remarkable speech which can both move and change our understanding of the frontiers between what can be done, what can be allowed, and what can be imagined. This study on “literary power” attempts to combine a historical approach to Boileau's writing through which he asserted the social violence oozing out of the literary world; to a generic and linguistic work on the means of expressions of power inside genres and common langage; and to another hermeneutic approach to his theory on interpretation which makes the sublime the strength with which man can exceed from inside his own limits.
