Grouting of ceramic tiles: influence of joints in stress relief.

Max Junginger 18 July 2003 (has links)
This study presents a bibliographical revision regarding the ceramic tile grouts. Here, the international nomenclature is explored and the types of grouts as well as its employments are enumerated. To base the reader on the ceramic tile cladding, its main concepts are shown succinctly. Being the grout an important component of the ceramic tile cladding, its functions in this subsystem are broached in details. The aspect of stress relief is widely mentioned, for this is an essential function of grout, particularly in the case of facades. In the end, the aspects of the preparation and the application of grouts are broached, particularly the cementitious products. The grouting of specific places such as meetings of sealants and interfaces with sanitary devices is detailed viewing the decrease of the occurrence of future problems. In the experimental study, panels in flagstone form tiled with ceramic plates are submitted to flexion until the occurrence of rupture of these panels, aiming to detect the influence of the joint thickness and of the type of the adhesive mortar in the rupture of the sample. The results indicate that the nesting joint thickness only assumes importance when the adhesive mortar presents high resistance of adherence.

Foi caracterizada por DRX a presença de minerais do grupo das micas, dos feldspatos e da esmectita na composição das massas cerâmicas analisadas, juntamente com a hematita e o quartzo, como mineral predominante / Abstract: Dust generated in the process of manufacturing ceramic materials may be a hazardous agent to the health of workers, especially when silica polymorphs in crystal forms of a-quartz and cristobalite are present in its composition. Occupational exposure to respirable dust of such polymorphs may lead to the onset of lung disease named silicosis and other associated diseases. In the ceramic wall and floor tiles industry data on the characteristics of dust generated in their processes and on the prevalence of silicosis in the sector are not sufficient to define the magnitude of occupational exposure risk to silica in this industry. This field study aims to identify physical parameters and the mass concentration and the composition in crystalline silica of airborne particulate material in industries of glazed ceramic tiles for floors and walls. Nine plants in Santa Gertrudes Municipality, São Paulo State, with dry manufacturing process, where the main raw material is red clay from the Corumbataí Formation have been selected. The study was conducted through systematic observation of the industrial process steps with dust generation, the collection and analysis of air samples from the environments and the mineralogical analysis of the raw ceramic bodies manufactured. Dust samples were analyzed with gravimetric and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) techniques. The air samples indicated that there was dust in the respirable fraction (< 10 µm) and the a-quartz was identified in 72% of the analyzed respirable dust samples. Other polymorphs of the crystalline silica were not found in the collected dust. The dust samples indicated concentrations of respirable a-quartz between 0.01 mg/m³ and 0.16 mg/m³ in the main stages of the process. The mean concentration of respirable a-quartz in the sectors of clay grinding was 0.06 mg/m³, in the pressing sectors it was 0.03 mg/m³, in the glazing lines it was 0.02 mg/m³ and in the preparation of enamels and engobe sectors it was 0.09 mg/m³. Minerals of the group of the micas, feldspars and smectite had been identified by XRD in the composition of all the ceramic masses, together with hematite and quartz, as the predominant mineral / Mestrado / Arquitetura e Construção / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

The floor and wall tile industry, however, is little developed since the state has only one company that produces red clay-based ceramic tiles. This thesis aims at using the predominantly illitic basic mass of the above mentioned industry, with the addition of feldspar and/or kaolin residue in order to obtain products of higher technical quality. Kaolin residue consists basically of kaolinite, muscovite mica and quartz; the feldspar used was potassic. In this experiment, basic mass (MB) was used for experimental control and fifteen formulations codified as follows: F2, F4, F8, F16, F32, FR2, FR4, FR8, FR16, FR32, R2, R4, R8, R16 and R32. All raw materials were dry-milled, classified, formulated and then humidified to 10% water. Thereafter, test samples were produced by unixial pressing process in a rectangular steel matrix (60.0 x 20.0 x 5.0) mm3 at (25 MPa). They were fired at four temperatures: 1080?C, 1120?C, 1160?C, with a heating rate of 10?C/min during up to 10 min in an electric oven, and the last one in an industrial oven with a peak of 1140?C, aim ing to confirm the results found in laboratory and, finally, technological tests were performed: MEA, RL, AA, PA, TRF and PF. The results revealed that the residue under study can be considered a raw material with large potential in the industry of red clay-based ceramic tiles, since the results found both in laboratory and in the industry have shown that the test samples produced from the formulations with up to 4% feldspar and those produced with up to 8% feldspar and residue permitted a reduction in the water absorption rate and an increase in the mechanical resistance while those samples produced with up to 4% residue had an increase in the mechanical resistance when compared to those produced from the basic mass and that the formulation with 2% feldspar and residue presented the best technological properties, lowering the sintering temperature down to 1120?C / A ind?stria de cer?mica vermelha do Piau?

There was a need to make a study of the influence exerted by the type of kiln in which tiles are burnt in their thermo physical properties. The analysis started with 24 raw samples of tile, which was split in two groups of 12 samples and burnt in Ab?bada and Caieira kiln. Besides that, it was made study of the tax of heat transfer to the environment (for each kiln). After having been burnt the samples were taken for laboratory analysis. The properties verified were impermeability, determination of dry mass, absorption of water, the load of bending rupture and its geometric characteristics, the tests were conducted following the currents standards. The tests were carried out according to the ABNT - NBR 15310. The calculation of the rate of heat transfer showed that the ab?bada kiln is more efficient than the Caieira, however the results of tests on the samples revealed no superiority of one over another sample.

La céramique architecturale des "Maîtres de Tabriz" dans les édifices ottomans des 15ème et 16ème siècles / Architectural ceramics of “Masters of Tabriz” in the Ottoman buildings of the 15th and 16th centuries

Mahi, Khalida 15 December 2015 (has links)
The « Masters of Tabriz » generate high interest among researchers. These ceramists, who decorated ottoman buildings in the 15th and 16th centuries, remain mysterious in many respects. The absence of biographies makes their identification uncertain and hence leads to many different theories about their historical and geographical origins. In reality, these masters are only known for their names found on monumental inscriptions and from ottoman chancery documents. Thus, investigation into ancient texts became essential to fill in the lack of evidence. However, some of these written sources have led to extrapolations and uncertain speculations. Yet these have been accepted and considered as conclusive elements, which obviously misrepresent these master ceramists. It is thus essential to return to the elements of identification. Rereading primary sources written in Arabic, Persian and Ottoman gives evidence to concrete notions and dismisses unfounded suppositions. As the shadow zones round them tend to lead to myths, the objective of the first part of this study is to rectify the knowledge in our possession of the “Masters of Tabriz”.The second part consists of a technical and ornamental analysis of the architectural ceramic tiles. The productions of the “Masters of Tabriz”, principally found in Bursa, Edirne, Istanbul and Jerusalem, are relatively well known. They have been the subject of many publications, but have often been treated transversally. This study offers a new approach, comparing the productions of the four groups of ceramists. This procedure brings to light the progression of this production as it focuses on the artistic correlations and disparities.

Možnosti využití fluidních popílků v keramické technologii / Fly ash of class C for ceramic technology

Keršnerová, Lucie Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis is focused on the possibilities of the utilization of the fludized fly ash in ceramic technology, especially in the field of brick manufacturing and ceramic tiles. There were used fly ashes from thermal power plants in Hodonín, Ledvice and Tisová. Fluidized fly ash can be used for manufacturing of building materials. There hasn’t been done extensive research in this area. One of the problem is sulphur dioxide leakage during burning. The work describes the behaviour of fluidized ash during firing. The attention is focused on air pollution of sulphur dioxide. The production of SO2 is controlled so that the aim of the work is to find a way how to avoid leaking. It was proved that addition of sodium ions causes the formation of minerals hauyne and nosean during firing. Also is described the behaviour of the fly ash-soil mixtures. The anhydrite decomposition temperature is lower than in pure fly ash. In the end is fluidized ash applied for the production of dry pressed ceramic tiles. This ash can be used in ceramic technology. However, despite the interesting results there are number of problems that need to be solved.

Conic Intersections : Art Centre in Solna / Koniska Genomskärningar : Konsthall i Solna

Åström, Teodor January 2013 (has links)
The cone in architecture has often been used to shape and generate space with a cellular structural logic. This project reconsiders the use of the cone for organizing space, in this case applied on an Art Centre in Solna, going beyond the mere repetitive logic of conic modules, to allow for a variety of scales and directions, ranging from large span horizontal conic spaces to more intimate smaller scaled vertical conic rooms. The spaces are created through an additive process of intersecting cones with planar elements added into the operation, thus allowing the coexistence of two spatial logics, leading towards a manifold and allowing architecture that can handle the requirements of the program and that reinforces the perception of the shape. The project also explores the possibilities of the cone as a single curved unfoldable surface and it’s implications on digital model making, drawing and physical construction.

Real-time surface grading of ceramic tiles

López García, Fernando 06 May 2008 (has links)
This thesis presents a case of study of the development and performance analysis of a surface grading application with real-time compliance. We address the issue of spatial and temporal uniformity in the acquisition system. In a surface grading application it is crucial to ensure the uniform response of the system through time and space. All the results presented for surface grading were obtained using real data from the ceramic tile industry. The VxC TSG database is public and can be accessed at www.disca.upv.es/vision/vxctsg. We present a method based on soft colour-texture descriptors computed in perceptually uniform colour spaces. The method is parameterized and the involved factors are studied using two statistical procedures; experimental design and logistic regression. Although it is not a new theoretical contribution, we have found and demonstrate that a simple set of global colour and texture statistics, together with well-known classifiers, are powerful enough to meet stringent factory requirements for real-time and performance. Also the method is compared with two other approaches from the scientific literature; Colour Histograms and Centile-LBP. Finally, we explore the method's capacity for on-line inspection in a study of real-time compliance and parallelization. / López García, F. (2005).
