Character Education in a Muslim School: A Case Study of a Comprehensive Muslim School's Curricula

Salahuddin, Patricia Z 08 July 2011 (has links)
Deteriorating social behavior, negative media influence and violence among adolescents have given cause to pause and assess character development for the youth of this country. The purpose of this case study was to examine how a Muslim school’s curricula implemented character education. This study used a qualitative single-case methodology to examine character education as it was experienced by the participants in a private Muslim school. Data were collected from participant interviews, document analysis, and observations of classrooms, daily activities and special events. Data were analyzed to determine how character education was defined by the school, the method of delivery for the character education initiatives and the implementation of character education in this Muslim school. Analysis was based on Character Education Partnership’s (CEP) Eleven Principles of Effective Character Education (2007). The results of the study revealed: (a) participants defined character education using varied traits, processes, and expected behaviors. (b) The school delivers its character education curriculum primarily through the Islamic studies division; an add-on delivery method. Still, there was evidence of partial integration of character education in the core courses and (c) based on CEP’s Eleven Principles four were present and five were partially present in the school’s character education initiatives. Findings also revealed that the school’s emphasis on values, morality and spirituality was instrumental in their teaching character. Findings suggest that if participants in the school community work together they might formulate a definition of character education based on common process and expected behavior and create a collaborative working relationship to implement a character education program. Finally, addressing the absent and partially absent elements of the eleven principles could enhance the school’s character education initiatives. The study provides a process by which religious schools could examine their character education programs. The criteria used to measure the use of character education elements are transferable to other settings; however, this method of study does not allow generalization of findings.

A Foreshadowing of Women's Liberation as Seen in Selected Plays of Molière

Owen, Jacqueline 05 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of revealing certain liberated female traits that are to be found as early as the seventeenth century in certain plays of Moliere. A study of the major events in Moliere's life and of the social climate and salons of his time, together with a close analysis of the plays themselves, is necessary to understand this important aspect of his works. In essence, this study attempts to show how Moliere's women emerge as independent individuals who refuse the role society usually assigns them. Although these female characters are products of the seventeenth century, their actions and attitudes are used in this thesis to indicate a foreshadowing of the twentieth-century, liberated woman.

Campaign advertising and its effects : the case of Mexico

Rivera, Gustavo 26 June 2014 (has links)
This dissertation explains how and under what conditions voters are affected by campaign advertising, taking particular account of the conditioning role played by political knowledge and ad tone. It builds on psychological research showing that people make regular mistakes in attribution, evaluation, and decision making; that they tend to give greater weight to negative than to equally credible positive information; that they better match their political choices with their interests and values when they are more politically knowledgeable; and that cognitive shortcuts cannot fully compensate for meager political knowledge. I introduce a psychological theory of how individuals react to campaign advertising in light of: (1) their political knowledge and (2) their natural impulse to give greater weight to negative information (i.e., negativity bias). Using data from an original laboratory experiment conducted in Mexico City in 2012 and from the 2006 Mexico Panel Study, I examine the effect of campaign advertising on the attribution of candidates' character traits, the evaluation of candidates' policy proposals, and vote intentions. I show that campaign advertising's effects on the attribution of candidates' character traits and the evaluation of their policy proposals are conditioned by the voter's degree of political knowledge and the ad's tone (negative or positive). I also show that campaign advertising has a significant, indirect effect on vote intentions through its effect on the attribution of candidates' character traits and the evaluation of their policy proposals. Finally, I explain why negative advertising has systematically bigger effects on voting behavior than equivalent positive advertising. I look at the case of Mexico to shed light on the effects of campaign advertising in developing democracies. Since most academic research has looked at the United States, this thesis intends to deepen our understanding of campaign advertising in comparative perspective, looking at a country where the thinness of party identification, the ambiguity of issue ownership, and the novelty of the party system renders voters more susceptible to information in campaign advertising. / text

Teigiamų charakterio bruožų ir darbo charakteristikų sąsajos su pasitenkinimu darbu / The relationship between positive character traits, job characteristics and job satisfaction

Cibulskytė, Agnė 29 August 2008 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Employee and his individual characteristics become more and more important in the modern organizations. Growing evidence show that job performance and job satisfaction depend on personal resources. According to the scientific literature positive character traits help person to work and improve productivity in organizations. Positive psychology focuses on resources in human character strengths wich enable a good life if highly developed. Important factors as well as character traits in predicting employee’s job satisfaction are job characteristics. The aim of this study is to discover and to determine the validity of these proposings by finding out the correlations between positive character traits, job characteristics and job satisfaction. Survey with 136 (51 men and 85 women) customer service employees across various organizations in Vilnius were conducted. Job satisfactions was assessed by Job Satisfaction Survey developed by P. E. Spector in 1994. Positive character traits were assessed by the VIA Classification of Strengths and Virtues, developed by Peterson and Seligman in 2003 and Subjective Happiness Scale developed by Lyubomirsky in 1999. Job Characteristics were assessed by Job Diagnostic Survey developed by Taber, Beehr and Walsh in 1985. The results showed statistical difference between job satisfaction and gender. There were no relation between job satisfaction with age, job lenght and marital status between men and women. Results also showed statistically... [to full text]

Med inferenskunnande i fokus : En studie om vad mellanstadieelever behöver lära sig och hur undervisning kan bidra till att utveckla förmågan att dra slutsatser om en huvudpersons karaktärsdrag

Rosenbaum, Cecilia January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the study is to generate knowledge about what students in years 4 and 5 (9-12 years old) need to discern in order to draw conclusions about a protagonist’s character traits in a fictional text, and how this ability can be developed. The method chosen to answer the research questions is Learning Study, an iterative classroom-based approach. Two primary school teachers in Swedish and the teacher researcher worked together. They collaborated to design, teach, evaluate, refine, and analyse a series of six lessons in a cyclic process with the Variation Theory as theoretical framework. The empirical data consists of pre- and post-lesson assessments, and video recordings of the lessons. The analyses resulted in five qualitatively different categories and four critical aspects. It is suggested that in order for the student to develop the ability to draw conclusions about a protagonist’s character traits, it is critical: (a) to discern that the protagonist’s character traits, both reproduced (explicit) and implied (implicit), are based in the text, (b) to discern, in the text, descriptions of how a protagonist for example acts, reacts, feels, thinks, and interacts with other characters in the story, as this could facilitate drawing conclusions about the protagonist’s (implicit) character traits, (c) to experience that when conclusions about the protagonist’s (implicit) character traits are related to how a protagonist acts, it is possible to discern what in the text the conclusion is based on, and (d) to experience that conclusions about aprotagonist’s (implicit) character traits can be discerned when they are linked to a character/person who is outside the story (eg in another story, film, or in real life).

The massive effect of NPCs : How the Mass Effect series creates likable NPCs

Legnefur, Emelie, Abasahl, Shervin January 2023 (has links)
Many video games use non-playable characters (NPCs) as important plot devices and for supplying the players with a meaningful playing experience. The Mass Effect series is known to have many likeable NPCs in its story, and even though emotional attachment and believable traits of NPCs has been defined, it is not entirely known what likeable NPCs excel in. Therefore, six participants were interviewed to talk about their favourite and least liked NPC and most memorable moment from the series. The results show that well developed AI, an unique personality, character development and free choice to avoid the NPC made them likeable.

Pallas Athena: krigsgudinna och aigisbärarens barn : En undersökning av Athenas porträttering inom Iliaden och Hymnen till Athena av Callimachus

Hansell Kers, Elin January 2023 (has links)
This study is about how Athena is portrayed in two of the surviving works of antiquity, the Iliad and the Hymn to Athena by Callimachus. The study further shows in comparison of the two works, how Athena can be described based on her emotions, attributes, actions and character traits. In relation to the Iliad, Athena comes to express emotions such as frustration, dissatisfaction, anger, hatred, happiness, joy and as loving. Furthermore, the analysis of the Iliad has been able to identify actions and character traits such as cunning, persuasion, incitement, courage, eager and quickness. Athena has also been able to be attributed characteristics in relation to her as a goddess of war and her father Zeus within the analysis. The characteristics that emerged during the analysis are the goddess as terrifying, angry, with destructive powers, that she never tires, terrible deity and based on her epithet Tritogeneia.   Through analysis of the Hymn to Athena by Callimachus, the goddess can be attributed to emotions such as pity and love. Unlike the Iliad, emotions of a negative nature such as frustration, dissatisfaction and anger do not appear in the hymn. Furthermore, other actions and character traits can also be attributed to Athena in the hymn, such as female beauty and personal hygiene. The majority of epithets and designations can be attributed to the goddess within the hymn, which, unlike the Iliad, is more numerous in number. The epithets and designations that are claimed are polisgoddess, queen, lady and Thebes. Like other identifications attributed to Athena within the hymn, epithets and designations can be related to context. That in the sense that worshipers want to see Athena appear in their company, which is most likely to happen if they address the goddess with respectful words.
