Charismatic Christ, Charismatic Church: The Development of the Gratia Gratis Data in Thomas Aquinas’s Theology in Light of the Summa Halensis

Kern, John Robert January 2022 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Boyd Taylor Coolman / This dissertation investigates Thomas Aquinas’s understanding of the charisms (gratiae gratis datae) as distinctly social or ecclesial graces in light of his critical engagement with the Franciscan Summa Halensis. It first looks at the Summa Halensis’s christology and theology of the charisms to show the theological inseparability of charismatic grace from the threefold grace of Christ (the grace of union, capital grace, and the grace of the singular man). I then trace the development of Aquinas’s understanding of Christ’s humanity (in terms of the grace of Christ’s humanity) as a conjoined instrument of the Word and show how at every step Aquinas critically engaged the christology of the Summa Halensis. I bring that historical development in christology and its application to the sacraments to bear on Aquinas’s understanding of the charisms as social or ecclesial graces, graces given to one person for the sake of another’s salvation. Instrumental causality provided Aquinas a new conceptual framework with which to understand what it might mean for the charisms to be social graces, placing the charisms within a wider array of created causal agents in the economy of grace. I place this development within the context of the rise of Joachite prophecy as well as the secular/mendicant conflict at Paris, factors that motivated Aquinas to conceive these graces as distinctly mendicant charisms. Just as the development of instrumental causality in Christology propelled Aquinas’s understanding of charisms as social graces, so this application of instrumental causality reciprocally informed Aquinas’s account of the charismatic Christ in the Tertia Pars of the Summa Theologiae. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2022. / Submitted to: Boston College. A pneumatologia no pensamento de Yves Congar / Pneumatology in the thought of Yves Congar

No. of bitstreams: 1 Alexandre Baylão.pdf: 967041 bytes, checksum: 21039e0c90884159c947110b8da78216 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-03-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The pneumatology in the thought of Yves Congar is reflected and produced under the essential test of experience and communion. Through the God’s experience that humanity has developed its theological reflection and sensed the nuances of self-revelation of God to all his work created and could discern what paths to be followed in relation to God, the cosmos and the human being. It was by the God’s experience that humanity approached the sacred and had communion with him. It could recognize God in its divine persons and worship him through Church sprouted of the decisive event of the Incarnation of the Word and his resurrection, from which it was given to mankind the grace of the Holy Spirit. But it was already present with mankind since the creation of the lines of the story. The Holy Spirit is the love of God manifested as mother love, protects, nurtures, corrects, unites and strengthens with his gifts and charisms. He is one for which, in the exercise of his mission, Christ and the kingdom of God come into the world. Mission is fulfilled in and through the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, being the Holy Spirit its foundation of communion, catholicity and holiness. The Holy Spirit was present in history, of humanity and of the Church in its great moments of transformation, conduting and inspiring his footsteps. However, the experience lacks interpretation, and in the historical process the communion was, sometimes, undone, and the Holy Spirit was also praised by some and forgotten by others, in this case the Church of Christ, was closed to the Holy Spirit. In the second Vatican Council happened the latest historical re-opening of the Church to the Holy Spirit.

Maria Lucena Feil 05 July 2012 (has links)
Corinth, the third largest city of the Roman Empire, was constituted by many peoples, cultures, philosophies, religions, lifestyles, and known as the most Hellenistic cities of the NT. It was a cosmopolitan city mediated by the elite, dominated by foreign powers, intellectually alive, materially prosperous and morally corrupt. The ideal of the Corinthians was the development of the individual. The city reconstructed in the 44th C, was populated by veterans, people of lower social classes, freed from Rome, disinherited Roman slaves, apart from supportive communities and traditions that constitute their identities. The patronage was the dominant system of slavery. Corinth was submitted to Rome and had Latin as official language. It was consolidated the mystery cults. The Christian community in Corinth opposed to the context as an alternative society. The gifts and charisms of the Spirit become a fundamental discussion, as 1 Cor 12-14. Paul points out in defense of the charisms of the building and submit the other gifts to the agape. The Triune God is the foundation of the charisms which the unity of his acts and be distributes a diversity of charisms and gifts in order to meet the needs of the people of God. The phenomena charismatic / Pentecostal witness wars, mass migrations, natural disasters and the social, philosophical and theological, historical contexts that involve profound changes in the being and the human community. The ecstasy marks the history over the centuries and is also one of the expressions of Catholicism today, the historic churches, as well as the diversity of Pentecostal churches and theological approaches.

Charismatic and Pastoral Power: A Foucauldian Analysis of the CDF Investigation of Leonardo Boff

Brodrick, Robert J. January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Richard R. Gaillardetz / The following dissertation argues that the relations of power operative in the investigation and silencing of Fr. Leonardo Boff, O.F.M. by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) can be adequately understood through the application of a model derived from the works of Michel Foucault. Drawing on the affirmation of the Second Vatican Council that the Catholic Church receives both charismatic and hierarchical gifts, the basis of this model is two elementary forms of power: charismatic power and pastoral power. The category of pastoral power includes, but goes beyond, the traditional ecclesiological concepts of office, law, hierarchy, or institution and includes all forms of ministries and modes of service set over the good of each and all members of the faithful. In order to accomplish this broader task, Foucault’s distinction between sovereignty, discipline, and governmentality are employed as three strategic logics of the Christian pastorate. Charismatic power is then understood as the free gifts of the Holy Spirit that uplift and perfect the talents of each member of the faithful in order to participate in the loving service of the church’s mission in dialogical relation to each respective strategy of pastoral power. In order to defend the claim that each of these strategic relations of power can be observed in the Boff case, this dissertation offers a historical review of the theological concepts entailed therein, genealogical analyses of the discursive and non-discursive practices carried out by both Boff and the CDF, and an explication of Foucault’s thought on power relations. This dissertation concludes with an interpretation of the Boff case that shows how the fundamental arguments of both parties are theologically sound, although with respect to different strategic logics. The conclusion also offers a preliminary outline for a generalized theology of power in the Catholic Church based on the lessons learned from this particular case study. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College. Charismen Entdecken: Eine praktisch-theologische Untersuchung in der Evangelischen Landeskirche in Baden / Discovering Chrismata : a practical theological inquiry in the United Lutheran Church of Baden

Baumert, Manfred Otto Willi 03 1900 (has links)
Summary and key words in German and English / Every church faces the challenge of procuring capable workers for the multifaceted task of ministry. For several decades now official denominational statements and the discipline of Practical Theology have been calling for a new understanding of giftedness in ecclesial service. As yet little fundamental research has been done in this area. This dissertation seeks to make a contribution both empirically and theologically. It marks the first time in the German–speaking world of Practical Theology that the issue of how one discovers charisms is addressed academically. The specific field of research is located in the Protestant Regional Church of Baden in southwest Germany. Nevertheless the findings can be applied more broadly since the research is based on thorough exegetical and systematic–theological analysis and has been verified empirically. There has been a quest for the charisms of the Spirit since the beginning of the twentieth century and even more so now in the face of the societal challenges of postmodernity. In the discussion of the different theological positionens arise as result that charisms have to be seen with an triune approach. In addtion, besindes the fact that charisms have a habitual meaning, they first of all have a relational dimension. The empirical research involved online–interviewings of pastors, plus interviews of church members. One of the major findings was that the views of pastors on how church members receive gifts is determined by their theological understanding of the charisms. Pastors discover gifts, not according to Pauline criteria, but largely according to emotional aspects, as proved by this research. It became apparent that protestant pastors are of the opinion that New Testament charisms are not first received at baptism, but already at birth. Another interesting finding is that members of both protestant main stream churches and pentacostal-charismatic churches hold the same believes about how to receive charisms. The only difference is their repertoire of gifts. This dissertation focuses on developing guidelines for the discovery of charisms within the congregation as the local body of the Church. / Practical Theology / Thesis (D. Th. (Practical Theology))
