Ross Lee Finney's 32 Piano Games and Stephen Chatman's Amusements: A Comparison of Two Pedagogical Approaches to Contemporary Musical Elements and Techniques

Piano instructors often have to work as a bridge connecting music from the past and the future. From a pedagogical viewpoint, contemporary works should be considered just as important as those in the standard repertoire. Yet, most piano instructors are skewed towards modern music and their teaching materials are focused on eighteenth and nineteenth century repertoire. It is essential for them to introduce various kinds of music from different periods and cultures in order to fully develop a student's musicianship. The purpose of this study is to compare two modern works that are designed mainly for pedagogical purposes: 32 Piano Games by Ross Lee Finney (1906-1997) and Amusements by Stephen Chatman (b. 1950). These compositions are intended for beginner and intermediate students and incorporate a number of contemporary elements and techniques. This study can help instructors and students understand how these elements are being used and the ways they have evolved over time. Most importantly, this dissertation can provide teachers with a distinct methodology that enables them to present modern pieces to beginning level students in a more approachable fashion, further providing theoretical and technical assets that will allow them to play advanced contemporary music in the future.

Er det alltid snakk om en objektivering av kvinner i pornografi? Og i så tilfelle, må denne objektiveringen alltid oppleves som passiv og nedverdigende? Og gjør den kvinner til ofre? Dette er bare noen av spørsmålene denne oppgaven tar for seg ved å undersøke ulike kvinnefremstillinger i heterofil mainstream pornografi. Med utgangspunkt i dannelse av karakterengasjement, tilskuer, innlevelse og identifisering, illustrerer oppgaven at kvinner i pornografi kan oppleves som aktive, sterke og nedverdigende. / Can women in heterosexual, mainstream pornography only be understood as objectified and degraded victims? Or is it possible to understand these representations otherwise? These are just some of the questions this thesis addresses by examining different female representations in mainstream heterosexual pornography. Through character engagement, spectatorship, empathy and identification, this thesis illustrates that they may be understood as active, strong and degrading rather than degraded.

Film som forteller : Fight Club som litterær adapsjon / Narrating Film : Fight Club as literary adaptation

På papiret virker Fight Club [1999] som et sikkert stikk. En litterær adapsjon utført av en kjent regissør (David Fincher) med solide stjernenavn på plakaten(Brad Pitt, Edward Norton). Men Chuck Palahniuks debutroman fra 1996 er et vanskelig verk, preget av mørk satire, flere lag med ironi og radikal subjektivitet. For å oversette en slik fortelling til film trengs ikke bare dristigheten til å fortelle om kontroversielle tema, men også oppfinnsomheten til å oversette en utpreget psykologisk roman til et audiovisuelt språk. Det er nettopp oversettelsen jeg skal undersøke i denne oppgaven, hvordan romanens kildemateriale har blitt gjenskapt i filmmediet. For å gjøre dette så konkret som mulig, snevrer jeg først inn undersøkelsen til filmens voice-over, som er basert på romanens tekst. Hvordan har bokas fortellerstemme blitt adaptert til en fortellende voice-over i filmen? Jeg skal ta for meg denne prosessen i tre deler, basert på tre stadier i adapsjonsprosessen hvor filmskaperne har hatt anledning til å kreativt bearbeide romanens tekst. Første del er voice-overen sett som skriftlig tekst, manusstadiet. Hva er kuttet, forandret og lagt til romanens tekst? Andre del er voice-overen som stemme, innspillingsstadiet. Hvordan forandres skriften i manus, og dermed også romanens tekst, idet en den blir til uttalte ord? Hvilke virkemidler har filmskaperne her benyttet seg av? Tredje del er fortellerstemmen i møte med resten av filmspråket, klippestadiet. Hvordan påvirker bildene og den øvrige lyddesignen vår opplevelse av fortellerstemmen, og hvordan er påvirkningen den andre veien? Deretter skal jeg utvide perspektivet igjen, og undersøke hvilke implikasjoner bruken av voice-over har for filmen som helhet. Hva kan en film kommuniserer Fight Club på denne måten? Tema blir ironi, upålitelighet, subjektivitet, karakterengasjement og kronologi. Anvendte teoretikere inkluderer Linda Hutcheon, Sarah Kozloff, Thomas Elsaesser, Gerard Genette, Seymour Chatman, André Bazin, Murray Smith og Lars Thomas Braaten.

Stephen Chatman's Piano Fantasies (1993): An Instructional and Performance Guide for Teachers and Intermediate Piano Students

Contemporary repertoire is not commonly taught or explored by teachers during the intermediate level, when a student's musical training is transitioning to an advanced level. Nonetheless, it is important for piano instructors to be open-minded about contemporary music and have some perspective on the development of music repertoire in the future. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a performance and pedagogical guide to Stephen Chatman's (b. 1950) Fantasies, from both technical and artistic viewpoints. The collection, which consists of eleven pieces, features a wide variety of contemporary idioms, styles, and means of notation. For instance, there are jazz-like syncopated rhythms, asymmetrical accents reminiscent of Primitivism, and Impressionistic or dissonant sonorities. Fantasies is not only a valuable tool for students to explore new sounds and improve their performing techniques while executing nontraditional notations and contemporary idioms, it is also a great teaching resource for instructors to promote students' musicality through hearing, seeing, and thinking. In this study, I provide individual, detailed descriptions for each of the pieces in the score, adding examples on how to address the difficulties they present to the performer. As a result, instructors can better understand how to help students prepare to perform this collection and spark their interest in playing contemporary music.
