The present study was composed of two experiments. The first with the objective to verify the colonization of Oligochaeta during decomposition of the macrophyte Eichhornia azurea (Sw.) Kunth, while the second experiment analized the faunistic struture of the macroinvertebrates along decomposition of E. azurea and Salvinia auriculata Aubl. Experiment 1 was divided into two periods (1st period: September to November 2007; 2nd period: February to April 2008). In each period, 21 nylon bags containing 10 g of dry leaves of E. azurea, were placed in the lake, and removed at intervals of 2, 5,8, 12, 25, 45, and 65 days. In experiment 2 (November 2007 to February 2008), 60 nylon bags were used, 30 of them filled with 10 g of dry leaves of E. azurea and the others, containing the same amount of dry leaves of S. auriculata. After intervals of 30 minutes, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 days the bags were taken out of the lake. In both experiments, after out of the lake, the bags were taken to the laboratory, and the remanescent material was fixed in a formol solution 4%, washed and sorted. The organisms were identified and preserved in 70% alcohol. In experiment 1, the highest decomposition coefficient (K) was observed in the first period (K= 0.023 d-1) in relation to the second (K= 0.018 d-1 ), however with no significant difference. An increase of density and richness of Oligochaeta along the study was observed in both periods. Naididae was the most dominant family, represented by the genera Allonais, Chaetogaster, Dero and Pristina. These organisms, for their ability of moving themselves in the water column, near the substrate, showed to be better colonizers than Enchytraeidae and Tubificidae. In experiment 2, at the end of the 72 days, it was observed a small fraction of total biomass of E. azurea (2.65 g DM) in relation to S. auriculata (5.10 g DM), whereas in the first macrophyte it was registered a decrease of the carbon: nitrogen relationship during the study, while in S. auriculata it was not observed the decrease of this rate. Chironomidae and Naididae were the families with the higher densities, representing more than 95% of the fauna in both macrophytes. The collectors were the most abundant functional group in E. azurea and S. auriculata, attesting to the predominance of these organisms in the leaves in decomposition in the tropical region.

Ecology of Chironomids Associated with Myriophyllum Spicatum L. and Heteranthera Dubia Macm

Balci, Pinar 05 1900 (has links)
Macroinvertebrate communities inhabiting an exotic, Myriophyllum spicatum, and a native, Heteranthera dubia macrophyte were studied from March 1999 to June 2000 in experimental ponds. Although macrophyte architecture explained some variation in macroinvertebrate abundance between the two macrophytes, most variation was explained by the sampling months. Total number of macroinvertebrates was found to be positively correlated with epiphyton biomass which differed significantly between the two plant types and among sampling months. Taxa richness did not vary between the two plant types. Chironomid larvae were the most abundant organisms and dominated by Apedilum elachistus on both plant communities. Annual production of five chironomid species was estimated by the size-frequency method. Production estimates (P) in g dry wt m-2 yr-1 of plant surface area for the predator Tanypodinae larvae were: Larsia decolarata, P= 0.77 and 0.67, Labrundinia virescens, P= 0.59 and 0.35 on M. spicatum and H. dubia, respectively. Larvae of Cricotopus sylvestris and Psectrocladius vernalis were collected from M. spicatum from March to mid-June. Production of C. sylvestris was found to be 0.46 g dry wt m-2, whereas it was 0.07 g dry wt m-2 for P. vernalis for this period. Apedilum elachistus exhibited the highest productivity: 9.9 g dry wt m-2 yr-1 of plant surface area on M. spicatum, and 8.5 g dry wt m-2 yr-1 on H. dubia. These production estimates are among the highest production values reported for a single species. Additionally, post-ovipositing development times for five chironomid species collected from Myriophyllum and Heteranthera were determined. Three different temperatures (15°, 20° and 25°C) were chosen to rear eggs under 12L: 12D photoperiod. Egg development times ranged between 1-4 days. Larval development times ranged from 44 days at 20°C for Tanypus neopunctipennis to as few as 9 days at 20°C for Larsia decolorata.

Caracterização limnológica e análise de comunidades bentônicas sujeitas à invasão por espécies exóticas, em lagos do Vale do Rio Doce, MG, Brasil / Limnological characterization and analysis of benthic communities subject to the invasion by exotic species in Rio Doce Valley lakes, MG, Brazil

Lucca, José Valdecir de 18 September 2006 (has links)
Benthic macroinvertebrates are important components of aquatic ecosystems due to their role in the energy flow and material cycling. They have gradually received more attention in ecological studies in the last decades. The present study aimed a comparative limnological characterization of four lakes belonging to the middle Rio Doce Valley lacustrine system, MG (Águas Claras, Almécega, Verde and Carioca lakes), and the study of its benthic macroinvertebrate communities with emphasis on the taxonomical composition, spatial and temporal distribution and diversity, besides an evaluation of possible relationships with the occurrence of exotic species in the system. The lakes are located in the interplanaltic depression of Rio Doce Valley, an extense drainage web surrounded by Atlantic Forest remnants (19 'DEGREES' 45’ 25,7" and 19 'DEGREES' 53’ 11,6" South; 42 'DEGREES' 37’ 35,6" and 42 'DEGREES' 35’ 11,3" West). Samplings for physical, chemical and biological analyses were carried out in September and December 2002 and in March and June 2003. Sediment sampling for granulometric determinations and for benthic community analyses were performed with a Van Veen (337 'CM POT.2') dredge. Considering the four lakes and the sampling seasons, 77 stations were sampled. A total of 56 taxa were identified, 2 belonging to the Mollusca, Gastropoda; 13 to Oligochaeta and 1 to the Hirudinae, Annelida; 1 to Nematoda and 41 Insecta, Arthropoda. Among the Insecta 27 taxa belonged to the family Chironomidae. The highest richness of taxa was recorded in lake Carioca (43 taxa) and the lowest in lake Águas Claras (27 taxa). Melanoides tuberculata, an invader molusc was the numerically dominant taxon in Águas Claras and Almécega lakes. In lake Verde this species ocurred in densities 5 times lower than in those lakes where its populations are already well established. This mollusc does not occur in lake Carioca. This was among the lakes studied, the one where the highjest richness of taxa was recorded and Chironomidae were the most representative benthic macroinvertebrates. There were seasonal changes in the population densities. There are also diferences regarding the taxonomic composition of the benthic community among the littoral and the limnetic regions evidencing the system compartimentalization. The sediments of lake Águas Claras, Almécega and Verde have low organic matter content in the littoral region, being classified as mineral and sandy, whereas the sediment of lake Carioca is loamy and organic. Regarding the general limnological conditions the results indicate that lake waters are slightly acidic and well oxygenated. Nutrient concentrations in the water column are relatively low. The lakes Águas Claras, Almécega and Verde can be classified as oligotrophic and lake Carioca as meso-oligotrophic.

Bonani, Fabiana 06 May 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T19:31:50Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 3033.pdf: 2632452 bytes, checksum: 845cb1d1140f7afd69ccba823955f581 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-05-06 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / The Piracicaba river basin is considered one of the most polluted in the state of São Paulo. It is located in a region with high population density in addition to great development of agribusiness and chemical, textiles, metals, electronics, automotive and paper industries. The objective of this study was to analyze the incidence of morphological deformities in the mentum of Chironomus larvae of this basin, especially in the basin of Quilombo stream. Physical and chemical analysis were performed in water and sediment, ecotoxicological and mutagenicity tests and analysis of the benthic community at ten sampling sites in August 2007. The influence of domestic sewage in the sampling sites was evidenced by analysis of surface and bottom water, which in general, gave results outside the limits established by CONAMA Resolution 357/2005. In the sediment it was detected the presence of metals and PAHs at higher concentrations than the limits established by CONAMA Resolution 344/04, besides the acute toxicity to Chironomus sancticaroli and Hyalella azteca larvae. The best environmental condition for the benthic community was observed in Jacuba stream and Piracicaba river, upstream of the Quilombo stream, which corresponds to the most preserved area. The major incidence of morphological deformities in the mentum of Chironomus evaluated in sediment samples were observed at two points located in the Piracicaba river (Points 2 and 3), downstream of the Quilombo stream, with 25.3% and 36.3% of deformities, respectively, and the lack of teeth was the most common type of deformity. In terms of environmental quality, Chironomus larvae collected in vegetation offered an additional parameter for some sites, because the sediment offered no significant number of larvae. In most of sampling sites it was not observed a direct correlation between the frequency of gross deformities and the level of contaminants, with the exception of zinc. It is suggested the value of 2% for the limit of natural incidence of deformities in non-impacted environments. Further investigations should be conducted in reference sites in the country, with the objective to include this variable in monitoring programs of environmental quality.

Mouthpart deformities of Chironomid larvae as an indicator of heavy metal polluted water

Lindström Jonsson, Tim January 2019 (has links)
Freshwater ecosystems are under increasing pressure from a variety of contaminants, including heavy metals from mining operations, which can have complex effects that are difficult to evaluate. To detect early warnings from elevated concentrations of metals, organisms are sought to be used as monitoring tools. For example, mouthpart deformities in Chironomid larvae have been proposed as a bioindicator of stress in aquatic environments. However, the frequency and cause of these deformations, and their sensitivity to different stressors remain uncertain. In this study, I evaluated the usefulness of mouthpart deformities as a tool to monitor the effects of heavy metals from mining in northern Sweden. To do this, the mouthparts of 3789 Chironomid individuals analyzed from 17 sites closely located to mining operations and tested against concentrations of metals and DOC in the water chemistry of lakes and rivers. The frequency of deformities ranged from 0.00 – 4.79 % across all sites. Metal concentrations ranged from ‘very low’ to ‘low’ based on biological effect risk assessments. Of these, copper (R2 = 0.73) and cobalt (R2 = 0.66) were found to be significantly correlated with frequency of deformities. Additionally, the occurrence of deformities declined with DOC concentration, this was a nonlinear relationship. Frequencies of deformities observed in this study were lower than what have been reported to similar studies. The result from this study, together with other studies, suggest that deformities in Chironomid larvae are sensitive to even low levels of certain metals and could potentially be a good biomonitoring tool for early warnings of contamination in freshwater environments.

Estudo de caso: lagoas do Parque das Dunas, Salvador, BA / Benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators of the health of coastal freshwater ecosystems. Case study: lakes of Parque das Dunas, Salvador, BA

Schiavone, Daniele Cristina 01 September 2014 (has links)
Coastal lakes are numerous freshwater bodies along Brazilian coast, being principally as habitats for the aquatic biota. They are nevertheless subject to great anthropogenic impacts. In the present work four coastal lakes located in the Protection Area of Parque das Dunas, in Salvador, Bahia, in two contrasting seasonal periods, the dry and the rainy periods, in which the lakes were compared. The benthic macro-invertebrates community was used as bio-indicator of environmental quality. Among the benthic organisms the dipteran larvae of the Chironomidae family were the most frequent and abundant. Their diet was also studied aiming to know the role of these organisms in the structure and trophic-dynamics of theses community by the analysis of the food items in their digestive tube. The results obtained have shown that lakes Vitória, Junco and Camarão had acidic, relatively well oxygenated and of moderate electrical conductivity waters in both periods sampled. The richness of taxa was moderate in lakes Vitória and Junco, varying from13 to 21 taxa, and low in lakes Camarão and Negra, varying between 8 and 14 taxa. Regarding the similarity among communities composition, lakes Vitória and Camarão were the most similar (50%), and Lake Negra the most different (20%). The indicators used evidenced that all lakes are under disturbances and require management actions, however, Lake Negra should be the priority for restauration actions. In relation to the trophic ecology of the Chironomidae larvae, the results evidenced the consumption of many food items as: algae, small invertebrates, decomposing organic matter, and particulate inorganic detritus. According to their feeding modes and consumed items the different taxa were classified in four distinct functional trophic groups: Collector-gatherer-detritivores, that comprised most chironomid taxa recorded in the coastal lakes; the Collector-gatherer-herbivores, the Predator-omnivores comprising all genera of the sub-family Tanypodinae and the Shredders. We concluded that probably omnivory is the strategy allowing the co-existence of organisms from many different taxa, being responsible for the richness of Chironomidae in the benthic communities of the studied coastal lakes.

Paleoenvironmentální rekonstrukce mladšího dryasu na základě fosilních pakomárů / Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the Younger Dryas based on fossil chironomids

Skurčáková, Anežka January 2019 (has links)
The final stadial of the last glacial - Younger Dryas (12 650 - 11 500 cal yr BP) is relatively well described in sediments of European lakes, however research related to its progress in Central European area is missing. The goal of this thesis was to examine progress of this stadial based on sediment core from Černé Lake at Šumava (Czech Republic). To reconstruct climatic conditions, sub-fossil remains of Chironomidae was used. The air July temperature was estimated using Swiss-Norwegian model. Geochemical analysis was performed to determine intensity of erosion, trophic status of the lake, and sources of its organic matter. To complete information about catchment, pollen analysis was performed. Following climatic events were identified in the sediment: Older Dryas (13 583 - 13 394 cal yr BP), Alleröd (13 394 - 12 383 cal yr BP), Younger Dryas (12 383 - 11 394 cal yr BP) a Early Holocene (11 394 - 11 138 cal yr BP). Presence of two phases of Younger Dryas was not significantly proven, nevertheless, the isotope composition suggests, that the first half of this oscillation was drier. Reconstructed temperature ranged between 8,30 and 10,31řC. The mean temperature for Older Dryas event was 8,92 řC, for Alleröd 9,61 řC, Younger Dryas 9,17 řC and Early Holocene 10,00 řC. Selenium speciation and localization in sediment and benthic invertebrates from lakes receiving treated metal mine effluent

2011 October 1900 (has links)
The objective of this research project was to establish a better understanding of the mechanism(s) and route(s) by which selenium (Se) may enter an aquatic ecosystem that has been receiving treated metal mine effluent from an upstream uranium milling operation. Synchrotron based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging, which require little sample pre-treatment, were employed to study the speciation and distribution of Se in complex sediment and benthic invertebrates samples collected from the field. Laboratory based inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) provided quantitative Se concentrations. Samples were taken from Fox Lake and Unknown Lakes, downstream of the mill, and Yeoung Lake as a control. The variation in Se speciation as a function of depth in intact sediment cores may provide insight into the species of Se available to the sediment dwelling benthic invertebrate communities. Therefore, a custom sample holder was designed to facilitate analysis of intact sediment cores at cryogenic temperatures. Additionally, laboratory reared chironomids were water-exposed to various Se species, to compare their Se speciation and localization to chironomids collected in the field. The successful demonstration of the custom sample holder and viable use of synchrotron XAS and XRF in studying sediment and chironomid samples have revealed that biologically relevant Se forms were present in sediment at depths accessible by the benthic invertebrate community. These Se forms included selenomethionine-like and selenite species, and to a lesser degree elemental Se; an increased proportion of reduced Se species was observed as depth increased. Other elements measured concurrently with Se included As, Zn, Cu, Ni, Fe, and Mn, providing an estimation of the redox boundary found both in Fox and Unknown Lake, as well as suggesting the presence of iron species that could aid in the reduction of Se. Field and laboratory reared chironomids showed similar Se species, and XRF imaging revealed the localization of Se in 4 distinct regions: head capsule, brain, salivary glands, and gut lining. Overall, the project has provided important insights into the interactions of Se with this aquatic ecosystem, which may have future applications in cold water systems with elevated Se concentrations.
