Welcome to the Circus: Finding ways to Artistically Express the Martial Way

Lewis, Donzell 21 April 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores various artistic and ritual practices of martial arts in relation to its presentation on stage. As a martial artist and actor I believe there are complementary practices in both crafts interdisciplinary of each other. For a martial artist, the individual’s performance and execution of martial arts techniques can be enhanced through emotional availability and characterization. For the actor, the martial arts can help condition the body physically, mentally and emotionally to create a grounded presence of connectivity to the earth. However, sometimes the martial arts are viewed as a militaristic discipline and not as artistic expression. I believe that the martial arts can be both discipline and artistry. Over the past three years of my graduate studies I have explored different methods to merge these methodologies. This thesis examines a successful devised show conceived by students and myself at our martial arts studio (dojang), at Martial Arts World of Powhatan, in Powhatan Virginia. This thesis’ examination describes and evaluates the production we titled M.A. Cirque: the Evolution (Martial Arts Circus: an evolution of martial arts). The M.A. Cirque is a theatrical martial arts performance expanded out of a ten minute competition routine to become a thirty minute production performed in Las Vegas, Nevada. Secondly, an exploration for further analysis of a supplemental martial arts demonstration titled Battle at Olympus: A new martial arts super show, describes the revisit of the theatrical process that was developed when devising the M.A. Cirque.

Právní ochrana uměleckého výkonu / Legal Protecion of Artistic Performance

Leška, Rudolf January 2017 (has links)
The thesis outlines the law of performers' rights, including its historical and theoretical background, relation to other areas of law, explanation of moral and economic rights of performers, problems of contractual law and issues related to the enforcement of rights. The core of the thesis lies in analyses of the terminology of artistic performances (including the performances of variety and circus artists) and the notion of a performer, the borders between protected and unprotected performances and the relation to a work of art, as well as in practical issues related to the collectively delivered performances by the members of an ensemble and their representation by a so-called joint representative. The thesis focuses on those aspects which are specific to performers or which cause particular difficulties in practical application; in these cases, the author offers his own solutions.

The problem that prompted this study was: how the circus arts can contribute to the development of body expression and creativity of students in physical education classes. The overall objective of the research is to identify how the circus arts can contribute to the development of creativity and body language of the students in the classes of Physical Education. The specific objectives are: to deepen the knowledge about the history and definitions of Physical Education and circus arts; present the possibilities of using circus arts on the different pedagogical approaches in Physical Education; show the contributions of the circus arts to the development of creativity and body language and deepen their knowledge of teaching methodologies, seeking those that can contribute to the development of body expression and creativity of basic education students. Studied in this work from the history of circus arts, circus and physical education, making relationships of these contents with the main pedagogical approaches this discipline, passing by the concepts of body expression and creativity to reach the field of research, where we develop an educational intervention for one academic quarter and work the following contents: juggling balls and flower stick, roll-roll and ropes. The instruments for data collection were structured observation, school reports and questionnaire. We can say from this study that a good planning combined with the historical aspects of these arts, which have in essence freedom of movement, creativity, body expression and a good mediation process, based on the actionreflection- movement action will allow the development of a physical education more expressive, creative, critical and human. In this way we will be contributing to the formation of questioning people with objective conditions to position themselves in favor of the lower social classes, not to reproduce the values of capitalist society: competition, exploitation, domination and exploitation of the best, among others.

Housing sexuality: domestic space and the development of female sexuality in the fiction of Angela Carter and Jeanette Winterson

Cantrell, Samantha E. 29 August 2005 (has links)
A repeated theme in the fiction of Angela Carter and Jeanette Winterson is the use of domestic space as a tool for defining socially acceptable versions of female sexuality. Four novels that crystallize this theme are the focus of this dissertation: Winterson??s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) and Art and Lies (1994) and Carter??s The Magic Toyshop (1967) and Nights at the Circus (1984). Each chapter examines both authors?? treatments of a specific room in the house. Chapter II, "Parlor Games: Spatial Literacy in Formal Rooms," discusses how rooms used for formal occasions project a desirable public image of a family. More insidiously, however, the rooms protect the sexual order of the household, which often privileges male sexuality. Using the term spatial literacy to describe how characters interpret rooms, the chapter argues that characters with a high spatial literacy can detect not only the overt messages of these formal rooms, but also what underlies those messages. Chapter III, "Making Meals, Breaking Deals: Mothers, Daughters, and Kitchens," discusses the kitchen as the site of the production of domestic comfort. An analysis of who has primary responsibility for the production of comfort and whose comfort is privileged often reveals the power hierarchy of a given household. The chapter also examines the kitchen as a volatile space that can erupt with violence and the expression of repressed emotions and repressed sexuality. Finally, the kitchen is analyzed as a space of intimacy between mothers and daughters. Chapter IV, "Bedtime Stories: Assaulting Sexuality in the Bedroom," argues that the privacy of the adolescent bedroom is often disrupted by the surveillance of family members trying to control the sexual identity of the room??s occupant. The chapter also examines how social prescriptions encourage women to tolerate the interruption of their privacy. Each of the protagonists from these four novels has opportunities to learn about subverting the discursive constructions of domestic space, and several characters enact that subversion. This ability for subversion suggests the possibility for agency, a possibility that postmodernist thought often rejects, but one that Carter and Winterson allow.

The caravan of deplorables: perspectives on Romani Anglophobia in late modern Britain

Lidstone, Michael Trent 04 September 2018 (has links)
Scholars researching Britain from the 1880s to the First World War have often failed to portray a diverse range of British attitudes towards the period’s state-sanctioned efforts to assimilate the Romani people. In most academic works, British voices that called for the elimination of Romani culture drown out those that were opposed to their assimilation into sedentary industrial wage-labour and formal education. They also mostly engage in only a surface analysis of the relationships between perspectives on the Romani and the great shifts occurring in British society. This thesis reveals a greater complexity of viewpoints within British society over issues of Romani assimilation that were increasingly fueled by the age’s rapid social and technological change. Poets, journalists, evangelical reformers, romantic gypsiologists and progressive politicians were some of the groups in Britain whose projections of fears and desires upon the Romani created an unintended referendum on the quickening forces of modernity. / Graduate

Loutkoherci, gymnasté, kramáři a šlejfíři. Proměny životních strategií světských rodů od konce 18. do počátku 20. století / Puppeteers, gymnasts, vendors, blade sharpeners. Changes of life strategies of itinerant lineages between the late 18th and early 20th Centuries

TLAMSOVÁ, Hanka January 2016 (has links)
The hereby presented thesis pursues the occupations of puppeteers, gymnasts, vendors, blade sharpeners and changes of life strategies of itinerant lineages between the late 18th and early 20th Centuries. Above all, the research was anchored at various registers - firstly comprising registry offices, censuses, registers of homestead participants or residence applications. These were supplemented by the then public press, remembrances of contemporaries and other sources. The historical and demographical analyses based upon genealogical outputs were the dominant methodological background, the subject of which primarily became the characteristics of itinerant individuals and their place within society. The author also inquired into their ethnic origins and specific ways of earning one´s living. The pivot of this treatise, nonetheless, was to reveal true historical circumstances having once brought into life a number of widespread clan legends. Neither marriage strategies were omitted as they provided proof of certain behavioural patterns of both the itinerant and settled individuals. Last but not the least, attention was paid to the sojourn and life en route within this roving peripheral community, the presupposed uniqueness of which was fully proved in every respect.

The use of Automatic Code Generators for Formal Methods not only minimizes efforts on the implementation of Software Systems, but also reduces the chance of existing errors on the execution of such Systems. These tools, however, can themselves have faults on their source codes that may cause errors on the generation of Software Systems, and thus verification of such tools is encouraged. This PhD thesis aims at creating and developing a strategy to verify the code generation from the Circus formal method to Java Code. The interest in Circus comes from the fact that it allows the specification of concurrent and state-rich aspects of a System in a straightforward manner. The code generation envisaged to be verified is performed by JCircus, a tool that translates a large subset of Circus to Java code that implements the JCSP API. The strategy of verification consists on the following steps: (1) extension of Woodcock’s Operational Semantics to Circus processes and proof that it is sound with respect to the Denotational Semantics of Circus in the Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP), that is a framework that allows proof and unification of different theories; (2) development and implementation of a strategy that refinement-checks the code generated by JCircus, through a toolchain that encompasses (2.1) a Labelled Predicate Transition System (LPTS) Generator for Circus and (2.2) a Model Generator that inputs (I) a LPTS and (II) the code generated by JCircus, and generates a model (that uses the Java Pathfinder code model-checker) that refinement-checks the code generated by JCircus. Combined with coverage-based techniques on the source code of JCircus, we envisage improving the reliability of the Code Generation from Circus to Java.

Yatsu, Renata Kuhn. January 2010 (has links)
No terceiro capítulo, o interesse é demonstrar que nesta extensa narrativa de Angela Carter, as representações estão presentes e produzem o clima de espetáculo, fazendo do romance um verdadeiro circo / Abstract: The present work presents an analysis of the novel Nights at the circus (1984), by the English writer Angela Carter, above all approaching the main character, Fevvers. In the first chapter we briefly deal with the writer's life and work, and also with the critical works produced about the novel. Still in this chapter, we try to analyze some of the terminology related to Carter's production, such as magic realism, post-modernism and feminism, taking as reference studies already done. In the second chapter, we use theories about symbology. The interest is to analyze some of the symbols which appear in the novel and are important during the reading because they let implicit some of the meanings that the author wants to transmit. In the third chapter the interest is to demonstrate that in this long Carterian narrative the representations are present and produce the spectacle mood, turning the novel into a real circus / Mestre
