A Preliminary Investigation Of The Role Of Magnetic Fields In Axially Symmetric rf Ion Traps

Sridhar, P 04 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Axially symmetric rf ion traps consists of a mass analyser having three electrodes, one of which is a central ring electrode and the other two are endcap electrodes. In the ideal Paul trap mass spectrometer, the electrodes have hyperboloidal shape (March and Hughes, 1989) and in mass analyser with simplified geometry, such as the cylindrical ion trap (Wu et al.,2005) the central electrode is a cylinder and the two endcap electrode and flat plates. rf-only or rf/dc potential is applied across the ring electrode and the grounded endcap electrodes for conducting the basic experiments of the mass spectrometer. In recent times, the miniaturisation of ion trap is one of the research interests in the field of mass spectrometry. The miniaturisation has the advantages of compactness, low power consumption and portability. However, this is achieved at the cost of the overall performance of the mass spectrometer with its deleterious effect on resolution. Research groups study the field distribution in the trap for better understanding of ion dynamics in the direction of achieving improved performance with the miniaturised traps. One aspect which has not received any attention in research associated with quadrupole ion traps is the possible role of the magnetic field in improving performance of these traps. Since in the quadrupole ion trap mass analyser ion is confined by an oscillating (rf) field, magnetic fields have been considered superfluous. The motivation of the thesis is to understand the dynamics of ions in axially symmetric rf ion traps, in the presence of the magnetic field. The axially symmetric rf ion trap geometries considered in this thesis are the Paul trap and the cylindrical ion trap (CIT). The changes incurred to the ion motion and Mathieu stability diagram in the presence of magnetic field is observed in this work. Also, the relation between the magnetic field and the Mathieu parameter is shown. The thesis contains 4 chapters: Chapter 1 provides the basic back ground of mass spectrometry and the operating principles. The equations of ion motion in the Paul trap is derived and also the solution to Mathieu equation is provided. The solution to the Mathieu equation are the Mathieu parameters and , when plotted with on the x-axis and on the y-axis, results in the Mathieu stability plot, the explanation of which is also given in the chapter. A brief description of the secular frequency associated with the ion dynamics is given in this chapter. The popular experiments conducted (i.e. the mass selective boundary ejection and resonance ejection) with a mass spectrometer is described here. Finally at the end of the chapter is the scope of the thesis. Chapter 2 facilitates with the preliminary study required fort he accomplishment of the task. The Paul trap and the CIT are the rf ion traps considered in this work. The geometries of these two traps are described in this chapter. The computational methods used for the analysis of various aspects of mass spectrometer is introduced. The computational methods used involve the methods used for calculating the charge distribution on the electrodes, potentials, multipole co-efficients and trajectory calculations. The boundary element method(BEM), calculation for Potentials and the Runge-Kutta method used for the trajectory calculations are introduced in this chapter. The expressions for calculating the multipole co-efficients are also specified. Chapter 3 presents the results obtained. The equations of ion motion in a quadrupole ion trap in the presence of magnetic field is derived here. Verification of numerical results with and without the magnetic field are presented at the end of this chapter. The chapter also presents various graphs showing the impact of magnetic field on the ion dynamics in the Paul trap and the CIT. The impact of the presence of magnetic field on the micro motion in -, -and -directions of the rf ion traps are shown in this chapter. Also the figures showing the variation in the Mathieu stability plots, with varying magnetic field intensity are presented in the chapter. At the end of this chapter the relation between the magnetic field and the Mathieu parameter is derived and plotted. Chapter 4 explains the various observations made from the results obtained. This chapter also highlights the future scope of the work for making this a more applicable one. References in the text have been given by quoting the author’s name and year of publication. Full references have been provide, in an alphabetic order, at the end of the thesis.

The Adaptation Of Ideas In Urban Development - Case Study: Expo 2010, Shanghai, P.R. China

Skogstad-Stubbs, Matthew January 2011 (has links)
This thesis begins with the hypothesis that the role of ideas in urban and global development is understudied and understated in comparison to studies that privilege economic and political analyses. The thesis generates two related models that seek to provide a comprehensive means of analyzing both the political economic constraints of development as well as the ideational limits that are overlooked by conventional models. The political economic model adapts constructivist principles to explain the structural limits on urban development that emerge from the contemporary global political economy. The second model draws on previous work done in the field of policy diffusion to posit four relational ways in which ideas are adapted and localized. The thesis argues that political economy analyses provide a comprehensive but mostly macro-level analysis and often fail to adequately understand individual thinking outside of the rational actor model. The ideational adaptation model corrects for this, providing a detailed micro-level analysis that is founded on the political economic framework. Together, the two models provide a comprehensive understanding of the ideational limits and political economic constraints at work in any given development scenario. In order to demonstrate the utility of the combined models (termed combined conceptual approach), the thesis applies the models to four different applications. Three examples are historical secondary source examples (educational philosophy, international business councils, and water sanitation) related to the history of Shanghai and China, and the impact of foreigners on their development vision, strategies, and practice. One application is a case study of Shanghai’s Expo 2010, which uses original data established through high-level interviews with Expo participants. The use of the combined conceptual approach shows how the interpersonal and inter-institutional adaptation and localization of ideas affect the way we understand the concept of legitimate best practice in urban development. The combined conceptual approach highlights the role that human thought, emotions, and psychology play in urban development. It links political economic activity to constructed bonds of trust, learning, the mentality of competition, and soft forms of coercive power (hegemonic ideas, leadership, and conditionality). Finally, the most important contribution of the combined conceptual approach is that it allows for an analysis of both the macro- and micro-levels of development in a relational and holistic fashion.

Role imaginace v estetické zkušenosti u Mikela DuFrenna / The Role of Imagination in Aesthetic Experience in Mikel Dufrenne's Thought

Borecký, Felix January 2017 (has links)
1 Summary: F. Borecký, The Role of Imagination in Aesthetic Experience in Mikel Dufrenne's Thought The aim of this dissertation thesis is to present Dufrenne's original conception of imagination and to highlight its significance for philosophical aesthetics. We focus on a critical interpretation of two alternative approaches which Dufrenne considers in his work. The first approach is based on a noetic perspective, the other on an ontological one. In both cases, Dufrenne claims that imagination is a productive, effecting activity which in a formative manner participates in knowledge of a priori truths regarding human being in the world. Such knowledge is most fully accomplished in the aesthetic experience. Only there a man opens oneself to the external world while maintaining with it a relation of primordial corporeity, which they both - i.e., both humans and the world - share. Imagination and its correlate, the imaginary, in an aesthetic experience stimulate each other and enable a reverberation of the most fundamental possibilities of human being in the world. It is imagination and the imaginary which enable a man to penetrate the superficial empirical level and reach the deep level of the a priori. On the level of the a priori, a man can experience the original corporeal unity which is of the same kind...

The development of a competency model for auditors working in a professional services environment

Monk, Allison Lorraine 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this research was to develop a competency model for auditors by identifying those characteristics and behaviours that predict success as an auditor. The Work Profiling System (WPS), the Repertory Grid Technique (RGT) and the Critical Incident Technique (CIT) were the tools and techniques used to achieve this aim. This research was conducted in two groups: trainee accountants (year 1- 3) and chartered accountants (year 4-5+). The results of the research, which was conducted within one of the Big 5 auditing firms, indicated that the competencies required of a trainee accountant are largely consistent with those of registered chartered accountants, working in the same environment. The most noticeable difference was the change in focus from cognitive or technical skills during the earty years to a focus on managerial competencies in later years. The competencies identified in this research compare well with reported models in literature. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial Psychology)

非營利組織發展關鍵成功因素-以台灣五個知名婦女團體為例 / Critical Success Factors of Non-Profit Organizations Development-The Case Studies of Five Women Groups in Taiwan

陳琬惠, Chen, Wan Hui Unknown Date (has links)
Research shows that there are key factors contributing to “success” that are common across industries. This study investigated the key to success of Non-Profit Organizations (NPO) and their developments through in-depth interviews with NPO leaders. These findings can serve as developmental key learnings for other, resource-limited NPO’s, allowing them to more effectively harness available resources, thus reducing wastage due to trial and error. This research paper endeavors to organize these Critical Success Factors into easily accessible best-of-practice case studies for up-and-coming NPO’s. For the purposes of this study, the author selected five Non-Profit Women’s Associations with a least ten years of successful operations. Research methodology was depth interviews combined with Critical Incident Technique (CIT). Three main constructs were used in this process including: The mission of NPOs, NPO participants and NPO operations. This study identifies and organizes “Critical Success Factors” that all successful Non-Profit Organizations should own. The Critical Success Factors of A Successful NPO Are: 1.Well defined missions. 2.Strong Personnel/Membership Structure: a.Members of the organization will have: i.self-motivated; identification to organization missions ii.A high degree of enthusiasm iii.The ability to execute the organization directives b.A successful NPO will have Leadership with the following characteristics/skill sets: i.The spiritual leader of an NPO with an unchanging sense of mission, a strong and insight. ii.The ability to continually learn and apply those learnings to the organization. iii.A mutually supporting team that divides work up equally. 3.Strong Operations: a.Organization culture: Equal, open, focused on learning and vigorous. b.Externally it will be able to: i.Clearly articulate organizational goals and objectives ii.Create sufficient exposure to create positive awareness and opinion within society c.Internally it will be able to: i.Create “esprit-de-corps” within organization ii.Empower stake-holders to leverage their strengths d.Continual review of social changes and the adjustment of old services or the introduction of new services to meet social needs. e.Creative and flexible strategies and the ability to integrate various resources to exert influence. A successful NPO needs to accomplish the initial Mission. In order to achieve this, it is recommended that the NPO leadership continually review whether or not the organization is achieving the objectives for which it was established and conduct self-evaluation and self-improvement. The NPO also needs to be in tune with developments and trends in the society it is operating in. By making the information gleaned open and available to all members of the organization, the leadership can empower its members and contribute to a common sense of purpose, helping it achieve the maximum efficiencies and success.

A reading of power relations in the transformation of urban planning in the municipalities of the Greater Pretoria region (now Tshwane) : 1992-2002

Coetzee, Petrus Johannes van Vuuren 07 October 2005 (has links)
The thesis unpacks the transformation of urban planning in the municipalities of the Greater Pretoria region (now Tshwane) during 1992 to 2002, specifically within the context of the government transformation in South Africa and contemporary planning theory. In order to contextualise the transformation of urban planning in the City of Pretoria/Tshwane, the thesis presents an overview of the international trends on urban planning and how these trends (during the 1990s) have informed, shaped and framed the transformation of urban planning in South Africa and in the City of Tshwane. These trends are associated with community participation, strategic planning, sustainable development; the merging social awareness amongst urban planners; and the new integrated relationship between urban planning and management. The narrative part of the thesis specifically unpacks and analyses the nature and impact of the transformed/transforming integrated, developmental and democratic planning system, the positive and negative impacts that this system had on planners, local authority managers and politicians. It also provides a perspective on the conflict and power dilemmas that arose between planners, between planners and managers and between planners and politicians. Within the context of the so-called web of power relations (as described by Foucault), the study specifically explores the impact which the transformation had on the power relations within the local authority planning environment – specifically within the context of the social nexus (as described by Habermas, Healey and others). The thesis provides a local example of the nature and dynamics of power relations within a transforming local authority, with specific emphasis of the planning function. Not only does this study challenge contemporary theories on power relations in planning, but it also provides valuable new insights on the complex and illusive power relations in local authorities. Largely based on the work of Michel Foucault and Jurgen Habermas, the study provides an intriguing reading of the many conflicts and power/rationality struggles and clashes that are being played out on a daily base in municipalities in South Africa. Through the detailed unpacking of a decade of transformation of urban planning in one of South Africa’s six metropolitan municipalities, Mr Coetzee contributes to improving the understanding of the current nature and focus of the urban planning function in the local government sphere. As such it provides invaluable insights to planning theorists and historians, not only in South Africa, but also in other societies experiencing rapid and far-ranging transformation. / Thesis (DPhil (Town and Regional Planning))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Town and Regional Planning / unrestricted

Skellefteås återkomst : En fallstudie om migrationsmönster och urbana effekter under en industriell expansion / The Return of Skellefteå : A case study of migration patterns and urban effects during an industrial expansion

Kokkalis, Elena, Adler, Rebecca January 2022 (has links)
Today the world stands in front of the challenge of adapting to new demands, where solutions thatincrease sustainability are required. Many cities are therefore undergoing big changes indevelopments where both expected and unexpected consequences will arise. Since 2017, whenNorthvolt decided to establish in Skellefteå, the city stands in front of the opportunity to become apioneer city of green evolution. The new development has not only put the demands of the industryat test, but also the city as whole. The challenge of the municipality is how to spread the message ofwhat the upcoming development has to offer to boost the in-migration, as the need for competence isthe main challenge of Skellefteå today. To be able to fulfil and meet the visions of the transformation, all actors need to work together in becoming the green city of electrification. To create a successfuldevelopment, the overlapping collaboration between the government, industry, academia andcommunity needs to be of high quality and thus the social capital will increase. The thesis explores the effects of a city that undergoes a fast expansion. By studying migrationpatterns through push and pull theory, the thesis investigates how to generate an increasedin-migration in different target groups, such as students and returners. While Skellefteå is dependenton having a positive netto in-migration, the current residents also need to be maintained, thusinterviews and a questionnaire has allowed the thesis to obtain a clear picture of strengths andweaknesses of the development in Skellefteå. The results of the questionnaire and the interviews areanalysed and discussed through an exemplification of the two theories of push and pull and thetheory of social capital.Large industrial expansions of this size shake cities to their core, as the identity and attributes of thecity are questioned as they change. When dealing with a development of this size, the social capital isput to the test and depending on its effectiveness, the outcomes can differ. The city is forced to weighdifferent factors against each other, the benefits of accommodating economic, social andenvironmental factors are measured and prioritised as all are not possible to sustain. As the main goalis to create an increased in-migration to the expanding city, the pull factors available and promotedneed to be questioned; What is Skellefteå in fact offering? The thesis identified six possible groups ofin-migration; counterurbanists, lifestyle migrants, people moving for social ties/the returners, peoplemoving for job opportunities, students and people moving for sustainability reasons. By highlightingone set of pull factors, Skellefteå has the unique opportunity to influence the migration patterns totheir needs and create a sustainable and attractive city for the current and future residents.
